black flies

Description

Yoo Youngjae and Jung Daehyun were the only two who were caught in a ransacking of a club that was known for it's drug abuse activities. It was their first time being under the influence of , and their luck was on their side when it was found that the content of the substance was low in their systems. Hence, the two teenagers who just graduated high school, were sentenced to rehabilitation as legal adults for half a year.

In that six months, no matter how hard they tried to get their lives straight to get into college, it was clear that their past wouldn't leave them just like that. They only had hope that they would stay clean - or at least, clean enough.

Foreword

I’m okay with this. As long as I don’t have to stay in that hell hole anymore.

“So tomorrow, promise?”  Youngjae’s mother started again about cutting his hair.

“Yea, I’ll go tomorrow, promise,” he told her for the umpteenth time. He started brushing through his hair. The strands were getting into his eyes, so he had them swiped to the side. He could feel sharp uneven ends on his neck. He just rubs them off, not thinking much of it. “It’s… not that bad, is it?”

“You can still say that!” his mother exclaimed. Youngjae knew his mother exaggerates some times, so he waited for Daehyun to back him up. He took the hint and started hesitantly.

“I-it’s actually kinda bad, Youngjae…” he told the boy, smiling guiltily. Youngjae rubbed his neck again. Whatever, he thought. It’ll be gone by tomorrow.

“Are you okay with going back and forth like this, Daehyun?” Youngjae’s mother asked him. Youngjae put on a blank face. They’ve had this conversation a few times now, but Mrs. Yoo is always trying to find ways to kill every silence she finds. It’s her talent, but it gets annoying. Daehyun’s just the same in Youngjae’s mind, because he tolerates it.

“Yea, I’m okay with it, Mrs. Yoo,” Daehyun assured her cheerfully. Youngjae thinks it sounds awkward, their happy voices. Because we’re not happy, he thinks. Things got this way because of unhappy things. But everyone seems to fake that smile and everyone else goes along with it. Just another happy human being leading another normal life. But they’re not. Nothing is normal. Nothing is right. But they’d like to believe so.

What’s the use?

I would never forget Black Flies, I've already grown so attached. I have to admit that this story is one of those stories that really touched my heart and this one approached me on a quite personal level.
