(Can I Be) Close To You

Myungsoo felt his throat go dry when he opened his eyes and found himself standing in a familiar hallway. He clamped his eyes tightly shut, willing the dream to go away, but when he opened them again he found himself to be in the exact same spot.

He flinched when he suddenly felt a cold breath against the back of his neck, and a shiver ran down his spine when a hand began trailing up his back, gripping tightly onto his shoulder. Myungsoo's body began to tremble and he bit down onto his bottom lip, knowing what he would see if he turned around.

The smell of blood was nauseating.

"Myungsoo." A dead, empty voice hissed into his ear. He could feel a cold weight pressing up against his back, like a ghost. Blood was dripping onto his sleeve. "Myungsoo, come join me."

Myungsoo was breathing heavily, his short breaths tearing sharply from his lips. He winced when the fingers on his shoulder dug into his skin, and forced himself to keep looking ahead.

This is just a dream, he tried to tell himself. This isn't really happening.

Myungsoo's lips were trembling and his arms shook by his side. He wanted to cry, to rip his hair out and scream. His chest began heaving and he could feel his eyes begin to water as his breath hitched in his throat. Myungsoo's knees were shaking and his legs buckled below him, causing him to fall to the ground. He was afraid that he would start hyperventilating soon.

Right when he was about to snap he saw movement from the corner of his eye that caused him to look up. The hallway was still and Myungsoo began to think that he had imagined the sight until suddenly he saw it again, a flash of black disappearing right behind a corner at the end of the white hallway.

Myungsoo inhaled deeply at the sight and hesitated for a split second before he was scrambling to his feet and dashing after the blur of color. Whatever it was, it had given him the motivation to move. For a moment Myungsoo's heart stopped beating when he realized that the thing behind him was following him, and he began running even faster.

He turned the corner and found another hallway, exactly the same as the one behind him. Myungsoo saw the figure for a fraction of a second before it was gone again, turning around another corner at the end of that hallway.

"Wait!" He called after it, his voice shaking slightly as he forced himself to move even faster. The thing behind him sounded impossibly close. "Don't go!"

Myungsoo began panting as he moved faster and faster. He couldn't tell if the reason why he was running was to avoid the thing behind him, or to catch up to the thing before him.

It took him a while but Myungsoo soon realized it was a girl that he was chasing. She was young, wearing a long white dress, and had flowing black hair. Myungsoo couldn't help but feel a strange sense of nostalgia as he chased after the girl. She seemed so familiar, and yet every time he was about to catch up to her, she would suddenly run faster or turn around another corner. Soon the footsteps chasing him grew fainter and fainter, but Myungsoo barely even noticed. He was so fixated on the girl, he didn't even realize when the footsteps stopped altogether.

Myungsoo stretched his arm out, determined to catch her. He closed the distance between them and reached towards the girl, grabbing onto her shoulder. He spun her around, careful not to mess up the daisy in her hair and─

Myungsoo's eyelids fluttered open as he woke from his dream and he blinked at the sunlight streaming into his room from the window. He lay in bed, feeling an unfamiliar sense of comfort, and he stayed there for several moments with his eyebrows furrowed as he tried to figure out what was off about the situation.

It was after a long silence that he finally realized what it was; he wasn't shaking uncontrollably, wasn't breathing in short pants, and he wasn't lying in a puddle of his own sweat, desperate to forget his dream. In fact, he hadn't had a bad dream at all.

Myungsoo blinked, staring up at his ceiling in wonder as he tried to remember how long it had been since he had been able to sleep so deeply.

The feeling of calm was short lived when he suddenly heard a knock on his door, followed by a soft voice that was most definitely not Suzy's.

"Myungsoo?" His mother called from the other side, "Myungsoo are you awake?"

He felt his eyes instantly narrow at the sound of her voice, and he turned away to face the window, anger welling up inside of him. His mother tried for a while longer at the door before he heard her give up with a sigh.

"Suzy told me to give you these last night." She said quietly as she pushed something under the door. "I'll leave them for you."

Myungsoo continued glaring at the window as she muttered something and walked away, but before long his curiosity got the better of him and he sat up to look at what she had left him. A small, yellow cellophane package with a bright pink ribbon lay on his floor.

It was a bag of cookies, Myungsoo realized after he had picked the package up, and he returned to his bed with a bemused expression as he undid the ribbon. Inside was a small card and he picked it up to read, immediately recognizing Suzy's neat handwriting.

Hi Myungsoo! I was sad that you couldn't join us for dinner so I made these for you! I hope you enjoy them! They're shaped like sunflowers, aren't they cute?

Myungsoo read the note with a blank expression on his face before glancing into the bag, pulling one of the cookies out. He stared intently at the shapeless blob before scoffing, a laugh escaping his lips before he could stop himself.

Still smiling, he brought the cookie to his mouth and took a bite.

what is that supposed to mean???

Suzy pouted as she looked away from her phone, glancing up as a soft breeze blew threw her hair. The weather had been particularly good that day, and so she had decided to go out on an adventure, remembering too late that she didn't have anyone to share it with.

She stared down at the new number in her contacts list. Kim Sunggyu it said. It was the friend that Howon had spoken about, the one that had gone to the same school as Myungsoo.

It had already been a day since he had given her the number, and yet Suzy couldn't find it in her to make the call. She knew it should have been easy, and yet she couldn't help but feel as if there was something wrong about the situation. It felt like she was going around behind Myungsoo's back, and she didn't like that.

Sighing, she glanced back down at her phone and decided to try her luck.

Without waiting for a reply, Suzy hastily dialed Myungsoo's number. The phone rang twice before the call was rejected and the screen went dark. Huffing, Suzy picked the device up to type a reply.

Sighing, Suzy set the phone down and glanced up. The sky was a deep blue and there was an abundance of especially fluffy looking clouds. She smiled at the sight, and quickly snapped a picture on her phone.

it's pretty right? (・◇・) if you pick up i'll show you more pretty things!

Suzy dialed Myungsoo's number again and to her surprise he answered on the third ring.

"Myungsoo!" She chirped excitedly when she saw that he had picked up her call. The screen remained black but she saw blurred shadows as the boy shifted his phone.  "You know, the whole purpose of video chatting is so I can see your face."

She heard what sounded like a faint scoff before the phone was moved again and suddenly what appeared to be Myungsoo's ceiling came into view.

"Oooh this is exciting!" Suzy said, "Is this what your room looks like?"

Myungsoo mumbled something in reply that Suzy didn't catch. "What did you say?"

"What did you want to show me.." Myungsoo repeated quietly.

Suzy's lips spread into a wide grin as she lifted the phone up to her face. "Me of course! I'm the most beautiful thing after all."

"I'm hanging up."

"It was a joke!"

Suzy chuckled as she stood up from the bench and began making her way back towards town.

"Is there anywhere you want to go?" She asked as she faced the phone towards the road. "I'm in town right now. I can take you anywhere you want! We can go to the library and I can check you out a book, or I can take you to a cafe and you can watch me eat. Maybe I can sneak you in and watch a movie, or─"

"I want to see the flowers." Myungsoo said abruptly, cutting Suzy off.

She paused in her footsteps, wondering if she had heard him wrong. "What?"

"The flowers." He said again quietly. His voice had grown louder, and Suzy wondered if he had put his face closer to the phone. "The flowers in the sketchbook."

"Oh." Suzy said as she began walking again. "I would have to get on a train for that, there aren't any fields near here..." She trailed off quietly.

She could practically feel the dejection coming through the phone as the sound of Myungsoo's sigh reached her eyes. Suzy bit her lip as she walked, feeling troubled. She had worked so hard to get Myungsoo out of his shell, and yet here she was forcing him back in again. A wave of guilt had just washed over her when she suddenly remembered something.

"If it's sunflowers you want, I can show you something." Suzy said brightly as she turned and began walking in the opposite direction.

Myungsoo didn't say anything but Suzy could tell from the way the screen shifted that he was watching. Perhaps he had moved the phone so that he would have a better view of what Suzy was doing.

"I saw it this morning," She went on as she walked. "I'm sure you'll love it."

Suzy continued chattering mindlessly as she walked, making comments about the weather and the stores she passed, until she stopped and faced the phone excitedly. "Ready?"

"Ta-dah!" She said as she turned the phone to face forwards. A long, cobblestone wall covered in painted sunflowers appeared on the screen.

"Pretty, right?" Suzy asked. "The townspeople told me that artists paint on these walls, and I just so happened to walk past these flower this morning."

Myungsoo didn't speak and Suzy continued after a momentary pause. "Do you like it?"

"Yeah."

Suzy took a deep breath as she stared at the building before her. It had already been a few hours since her adventure with Myungsoo, and in that time she had finally built up the courage to call the number in her phone. An attractive male voice had answered her call, and told her to meet her at his school, which was how she found herself now, standing at the main entrance to an unfamiliar high school.

Taking a deep breath, Suzy took one step forward when suddenly she heard a noise that made her freeze in her steps. A loud giggle reached Suzy's ears from a group of girls standing outside the school. They were huddled together and laughing, and the sound immediately made Suzy feel as if ice cold water had been injected into her bloodstream.

The girls weren't looking in her direction, but Suzy suddenly felt as if the entire world was staring at her as she whirled around and began walking away from the high school.

She took three steps before she froze, taking a deep breath. "This is for Myungsoo." Suzy muttered under her breath. "For Myungsoo."

Digging her nails into the palms of her hands, Suzy turned around again, glancing warily at the girls.  They were talking amongst themselves, not noticing Suzy at all, and she focused on that thought as she approached them. Her breath was held as she passed them, and it wasn't until they were safely behind her that she allowed herself to breathe again.

Suzy had never been good with other girls. Once the group was behind her, Suzy felt herself relax as she glanced around for the person she was looking for. Pulling out her phone, she decided to dial the number again.

She had just made the call when she heard the sound of a phone ringing. Looking up, Suzy made eye contact with a boy standing a few feet away from her.

"Sunggyu?" She asked hesitantly as the boy smiled at her.

"You must be the princess." He chuckled as he approached her. "Nice to meet you."

"Hello." Suzy replied, flushing at the nickname.

Sunggyu motioned towards an empty picnic table and the two sat down across from each other.

"Howon has told me a lot about you." He said, chuckling as Suzy flushed again.

"Has he?"

"He told me that you were a princess but you didn't act like one."

"Did he tell you anything else?" Suzy asked, keeping her voice pleasant. In her mind she was cursing her old friend's existence and vowing to get revenge.

"Just that you wanted to ask me some questions." Sunggyu answered, leaning onto the table. "How can I help you?"

"I actually wanted to find out some things about a friend of mine. He used to go to school here."

"Oh? What's his name?"

"Myungsoo." Suzy answered, "Kim Myungsoo."

Sunggyu's eyes hardened at the sound of Myungsoo's name and the smile instantly slid off of his face. Suzy blinked, alarmed at his sudden change in attitude.

"Myungsoo?" Sunggyu asked darkly, "What did you want to know about that murderer?"
