And that's just the way that the world was heading in until scientists made a group decision.

Project Sweetheart

A desperate attempt at keeping the population of animals alive by fusing human and animal genes together to carry on the race; because humans tend to protect their own kind a lot more aggressively.

And this Project Sweetheart was a massive success, almost too massive. Humanoid animals began popping up everywhere, from things as simple to dogs and cats to much more exotic animals such as giraffes or monkeys. They settled in with human life perfectly, becoming the perfect companions or even partners for some people.
