Collecting the Memories

“That was after he had hurt me,” Sungyeol mumbled.

He stared at the picture in his hands, wondering how in the world he could still be so happy and so full of love after this Myungsoo person had physically hurt him. How could he even continue to love someone like that? Sungyeol was so sure that if someone were to hurt him, he would have left that person right away.

Was I really that weak before I lost my memories?

Sungyeol furrowed his eyebrows together. Surely he would’ve left the man if he really wanted to, but something had stopped him, and he was curious to know why. The maroon-haired man pondered on how long his memories would take to come back. He hoped it would be soon. There were too many holes in his memory for him to fully understand anything.

For now, he knew one thing though. He had to find Myungsoo.

            “Sungyeol, are you ok?”

He looked up to find Woohyun looking over at him worriedly, realizing that he had been shaking the picture in his hands and that maybe his mumblings weren’t as quiet as he thought they were. He glanced down sheepishly, nodding his head.

            “Yeah, I’m fine,” he muttered.

Woohyun started to get up from the blanket that covered him, only now noticing that it was there, and was about to go to Sungyeol when the younger had stopped him with a hand gesture that told him to stay where he was.

“I’m totally fine, Woohyun,” Sungyeol repeated, this time with a smile. It was kind of cute how the elder constantly worried about him, but Sungyeol really was ok this time, and he didn’t want Woohyun to worry about him when it was completely unnecessary.

The elder reluctantly sat back down, staring at Sungyeol for a little bit before rubbing his eyes. He did just wake up after all, and despite being the one in the group that had gotten the least sleep the past couple of months, he was the first one to wake up, Sungyeol still on the back of him mind, even in his sleep.

Woohyun smiled at the younger before swiveling around to check the time on his phone. It was early morning now, and he quietly got up, folding the blanket that Sungyeol was so precious and sweet to cover him up with. He couldn’t help but grin and blush as he thought about Sungyeol caring about him. He then proceeded to turn back around and reach his hand out for the other to take.

“Come on,” Woohyun whispered, “I’ll make you breakfast.”

Sungyeol’s eyes only brightened at the sound of food. It was then that he remembered that Woohyun made the best food ever. He quickly grabbed Woohyun’s hand and rose to his feet, still careful to not make any loud sounds that would wake the others. He giggled as silently as he could after hearing a loud snore come from his older step-brother, Sunggyu, and he couldn’t help but squeal a little after passing by and stepping over the cuddling Hoya and Dongwoo couple.

As he walked down the now familiar stairs with Woohyun, he couldn’t help but be content with what he had. He was happy—even happier after having a taste of what Woohyun called a normal breakfast (it was nothing of the sort, because it was practically a five-star worthy breakfast, and Woohyun was never really good with lying anyway). Sitting on the kitchen counter after eating and watching Woohyun wash the dishes in front of him (because Woohyun insisted), Sungyeol decided that maybe it would be ok if he never really found Myungsoo. He thought that maybe it was fine that all he had were the four lovely people he had in the house with him.

Woohyun was actually more than enough.

Later on when the rest of the men upstairs had woken up, Dongwoo had convinced everyone that they take Sungyeol to his favorite café. Sungyeol didn’t remember if he had preferred tea or coffee, much to Sunggyu’s horror since the younger was practically in love with Americanos since he had taken a sip of his when they were teenagers, but there was an instant feeling of nostalgia when they had stepped through the door of the vintage-looking, European-styled café. He had flashes of their past study sessions here, and then he remembered the first time that he had heard Woohyun sing.

It was a rainy night, and Dongwoo had just finished telling him about how amazing his first day of college was. Hoya, Woohyun, and Sungyeol still had one more year of high school to go, and Sunggyu had already told them a similar story the year before, but of course, Dongwoo’s stories always had a little more flair to them. Hoya was up with Sunggyu by the cashier, trying to ask the elder if he knew what dessert Dongwoo would like and whether he liked sweet or bitter coffee and whether he like guys or girls (it was before they started to date and it was back when Hoya was an awkward teenage mess). Woohyun, though, had disappeared halfway through the story to “go to the bathroom”, but the elder hadn’t come back in a while, making Sungyeol glance every once in a while from Dongwoo’s overly-excited face and exaggerated hand movements to the bathroom, looking for his best friend.

A couple of moments later though, after Hoya came back with every single one of Dongwoo’s favorites and Sunggyu with a huge, mischievous grin on his face after finding out Hoya’s little secret, the lights had dimmed a little, and out came Woohyun in the far right of the café, where the stage was. The current singer had just finished her song, and she nodded to Woohyun, smiling as she moved to the seat next to the microphone and pulled out her guitar. Woohyun shyly went up to his seat in front of the mic and cleared his throat, running his hands up and down his thighs, obviously more nervous than the confident singer who sang at the café every day.

“So, this is Nam Woohyun, and he’s going to be singing a song he had written for a special someone in this very room,” the girl next to him introduced. She winked at him and then began to play a soft tune that had everyone stop their conversations to listen to the lovely sound.

The minute the girl had introduced Woohyun, everyone at Sungyeol’s table started to make teasing sounds at him, and Sungyeol could feel his face heat up, especially since Woohyun had kept glancing towards him (and the fact that his birthday was today and Woohyun did say he had something special planned).

Give it up to Nam Woohyun for finding a way to make Sungyeol’s birthday special, even if it was raining cats and dogs outside.

The song ended up being one of the best songs that Sungyeol had ever heard, and he was just so surprised because he never knew that Woohyun could sing that well. He didn’t even know that the elder was that talented when it came to writing and composing music either. Sungyeol was absolutely mesmerized while listening to the song Woohyun had written, and the sweet lyrics made him blush a little too, especially after the wonderful song when Woohyun had nervously added that it was actually dedicated to him.

“So, that was for you, Sungyeol, since it’s your birthday today, and I wanted to tell you today that I-um kind of li—“

However, just as Woohyun was about to make his confession, the door to the café had loudly opened—there were bells on top of the door—and in came a soaking wet person who seriously looked like he had a terrible day.

Suddenly, everyone’s attention averted from Woohyun to the new guy that had entered the café with his dripping black clothes and his slightly curling black hair. Sungyeol, being Woohyun’s very wonderful friend, had immediately gone to the person, trying to get him out of the way and dried up quickly, so that everyone would stop paying attention to the random person who decided to go running in the rain, and go back to having all eyes on Woohyun, who was about to say something that Sungyeol thought was going to be very important (Woohyun never looks nervous unless it was something important).

But the moment he had looked into the stranger’s eyes, something had just clicked.

And suddenly, coming back to reality from the flashback he just had, Sungyeol understood why he had stayed with Myungsoo all of that time.
