Chapter 1

Conflicted Feelings

"MinJi-ah~! Wake up, Taekwoon is waiting for you!" Mom hollered from the kitchen. I could tell Taekwoon was probably thoroughly amused by the relationship the two of us had. It was hard to believe that I moved in with my mother, who had abandoned my Dad and I for another man, just a year ago.

But it's always better to forgive and forget, right? Plus, now her and Dad are thinking of getting remarried, which I found the cutest thing ever.

Oh wait, I had to go to school now. Drat...

Rolling out of bed, I fell on the floor with a thud, wrapped in a tangle of bedsheets. I heard my mother laughing loudly in the kitchen and, growling in frustration, forced myself out of my cozy cocoon of blankets and stomped into the kitchen.

"Good morning, dear! You aren't really ready for school, though..." She said, setting a large stack of pancakes in front of Taekwoon and I. He looked surprised at the amount of food, and he seemed indecisive before I crammed a piece of the pancake in his mouth.

He gave you a pointed look before I simply said, "Eat up." Mom was shaking her head and laughing to herself.

"Kids these days..." She muttered, finishing up the last of the pancakes. She often said my sarcastic and happy persona reminded her of herself when she was younger.

"So Taekwoon-ah, you have a soccer game today?" I asked him with a mouth full of syrupy pancakes. He put a hand over my mouth and nodded, signalling that he wanted me to eat before I talked. His face contorted in a grimace and I slapped the side of his arm, even though I knew he probably didn't feel a thing.

He was a part of the national youth league after all. He was a pretty tough guy.

"Okay, okay fine, do you want me to go?" He shook his head no, and I looked at him in confusion. "Why not?"

"The team's good. I might loose." He said quietly before stuffing his face with pancakes again.

"I won't like you any less if you loose, Taekwoon-ah. Is Jiyoung coming to cheer you on?" Again he shook his head.

"Nah, she's got cheer practice." He replied, taking the dirty plate and hopping off the bar stool gracefully. He strode over to Mom and helped her wash the dishes, even though it was against her wishes. I had to laugh; Taekwoon was a real sweetheart behind that indifferent face.

"I'm going to get ready in 10 minutes." I yelled out, hopping off the bar stool (albeit a lot LESS gracefully) and dashing off to my room. "Good luck with that, hon." Mom replied, and I laughed before shutting the door.

Let's prove her wrong, shall we?

I took out the school uniform from my closet and put it on, ran a brush through my hair, slipped on a hairtie and put on a little makeup before putting on my glasses.

Hopping out the door with Taekwoon trailing behind me, my mother waved goodbye and watched us walk down the sidewalk until we turned the corner. It was a little habit of hers, and I didn't mind it too much.

"Hey, Taekwoon! Hurry up, will you?" I yelled at him, stopping to wait for the tall boy to make his way over to me. It was the first time that I really looked at Taekwoon.

His school uniform fit his broad shoulders, his legs were long, and you could easily tell that he was a good soccer player. He wasn't bulky, he had lean muscle all over. His hair was short, but it suited him. His face contorted to a smirk when my eyes travelled over his face, and I realized I was checking him out shamelessly. I flushed and suddenly averted my gaze to my worn out white sneakers. He easily towered over me at 6'1, and he whispered in my ear.

"Like what you see?" His breath that tickled my ear made me blush even more before I pushed him away, turning around and walked rapidly through the gates without a word. That was really weird...

Goddangit. He has a girlfriend, and I am his best friend! Why is my heart acting like this? This isn't right at all!

Urgh.

I walked into my classroom and sat down next to YuRah, my seatmate and my other best friend. We just got to know each other and she was just amazing.

She lived alone, since her parents died in a train wreck a long time ago, and she has neighbors that sometimes come over and cook nice things for her, even though she can cook just as well. She rides a motorbike to school, and she was very pretty. The kingkas of the school have asked her to date them, but she had rejected them. She wasn't popular, but everyone knew her name. Her and Leo got along pretty okay.

"Hey, MinJi, why do you look like you ran the whole way here? Isn't your house only a couple blocks away?" She asked, raising a brow at my still-flushed face. I just shrugged and shook my head, not willing to talk about my feelings for Taekwoon right now. YuRah understood and let it go.

They'll go away eventually, right?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Taekwoon watched as MinJi dashed through the school gates, her face flushed a bright red and eyes averted to the ground. He was kind of amused by her reaction, but he couldn't help but worry about his friend.
She had been acting like that for a while now, and it really bothered him. Every time he got really close to her, she fidgetted uncomfortably. His initial thought was the stench of his bad BO that was repelling her.
Hey, he was a man. He couldn't help the fact that he had bad BO sometimes.
But later when she fell asleep on his lap comfortably after his soccer practice, he didn't think that was the case. She would've said something if it was Taekwoon's body odor anyway, so he was safe. However, he couldn't get this weird feeling at the pit of his stomach out whenever he was around her.
He didn't even feel that way around Jiyoung, his girlfriend of two years.
The poor boy was confused beyond belief.
Climbing on the stone wall that fenced in the front yard, he swung his legs over casually, as if he was taking his time getting to his classes. It wasn't like he was going to miss anything important other than a test or two anyway.
Besides, he could always make it up later. He was the star soccer player of the school, for Heaven's sake! The teachers loved him anyhow, and you can never forget the fangirls.
He smirked at the thought of gifts his fangirls would give him tomorrow and the endless questions that they would ask to catch a glimpse of a smile or at least a smirk from the ever-so-famous Taekwoon. After all, as the rumor said, it was once in a blue moon that Taekwoon will ever show any emotion other than indifference.
And if that was the reputation, he might as well prove it right.
"YAH! TAEKWOON! WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT HERE!" He didn't realize that it was recess time and all the students were loitering around in the front yard of the school. They were idly chatting, walking around, or releasing their pent-up energy in a game of soccer.
He took out his earbuds and narrowed his eyes at the source of the obnoxious voice; Cha Hakyeon.
He was a dancer buddy that he had made in music class that was mostly for girls. His teammates had called him a sissy for taking that class along with Hakyeon, but they soon dropped that path of conversation when Taekwoon refused to drop the class and saw that their teammate had some potential in singing.
"What, Hakyeon-ah?" He asked in an irritated voice. Hakyeon had a big grin plastered on his tan face, and he couldn't help but sigh in defeat.
That grin most likely meant there was something that had happened in school, and he had to say it really bad.
"You missed so much. You know those girls that keep flocking around you? They are putting chocolates and gifts all over your desk." Taekwoon shrugged nonchalantly, knowing that would've happened anyway whether he was there or not.
"Oh, MinJi-ah wanted to know where you were. She walked with you today, but she didn't know where you went." At the mention of MinJi's name, the weird feeling started at the pit of his stomach again. Where were these feelings coming from?
"What did you tell her?"
"That you skipped for the upteenth time this year." Taekwoon did a facepalm with the sidewalk as he landed on the ground on everything but his feet. Hakyeon rushed over to help him up, trying desperately not to laugh at his friend's obliviousness. He shot the dark-skinned boy the dagger look and he swallowed everything that resembled laughter on his pretty face.
"It seems that every time I say MinJi's name, something weird happens to you. Do you like her or something?"
Taekwoon rubbed his forehead in frustration. "I don't even know..." He said quietly.
