Chapter 2

The Best Memories

*Represents English* (and if not specifically stated, this story will be from "nobody's" pov)

This is War Era (6 years ago)

“But hyung, we don’t need an English tutor! We can speak English fine,” Mir protested. Rain looked amused, “Really? How is your day so far, Cheolyong-ah?” he asked. Mir looked panicked, then confused, and hesitantly answered, “Yes?” Cheondoong, Seungho, and GO burst out laughing. Joon looked confused, “Didn’t he answer correctly?” he asked, perplexed. Rain smugly leaned back in his chair, “My point, proven.”

Seungho spoke up, “Hyung, we’re all mediocre with English, with the exception of Joon and Cheolyong. We can teach them ourselves. Wouldn’t it be expensive to hire a tutor?” Rain smiled at the leader, “Seungho-ah, do I have to bring up Sanghyun’s tragic story of you ‘teaching’ him the Korean culture? I’d hate for Changsun and Cheolyong to go through that, too. Besides, we’re renting an apartment for her to stay in, and we have agreed that it will count as her salary.”

Joon pouted, “I barely get any sleep these days, and with an English tutor added onto our hectic schedules, I’m never going to.” Rain laughed, “That was your problem, I took you to Hollywood partly to teach you some English, but apart from reading the script, all you did was sleep and smile at the film crew. You just have time management problems.”

He looked at the five boys standing in his office, “She’s coming from the United States in 2 days. Your first session will be next Saturday. Also, in return, I want you five to teach her some Korean, since she only knows a couple of phrases in Korean.” With that, Rain looked back down at his files, and started to type into his computer. GO looked at the leader and shrugged. Seungho held back a chuckle, and said “Ne hyung, kamsamnida”. The five boys left the room, and walked back to the practice room.

“Well that was kind of random,” Joon said. GO stared at the younger boy, “You aren’t serious, are you? Rain was already shaking his head from your horrible conversation with Kyung Lim sunbae on Happy Days... Didn’t you see his face when he gave us that English test two weeks ago?” Joon looked perplexed, “What English test- ohhhhh... THAT WAS A TEST???” Seungho laughed, “Aigo Joon-ahh. You’re such a pabo.”  Mir was still confused, “What was wrong with my answer?” Sanghyun laughed, “Nothing, Mir-ah, it was nothing.” “STOP TEASING ME!!!!” Mir yelled. The rest of the group laughed, shook their heads, and continued to the dance room.

Back in the office, Rain picked up the phone, and called a number from a sticky note plastered onto the computer monitor. “Hello? Is this Alexandra? Oh hello. I was just calling to re-confirm our plans for the tutoring. Yes. Are you sure you want to go through with this? I mean, I know that you don’t have much of a choice, but still. I could give you a place to stay without the tutoring. Alright. Well at least you know Byunghee... Oh, I’m sure he will remember you. Okay, I will see you on Wednesday, then.” Rain put down the phone before sighing deeply. He looked at a picture on his desk, and smiled sadly. “Aigo dongsaeng, your daughter misses you. It’s been 10 years, but I can still hear it in her voice. At least she won’t be alone in Korea. She has the boys now, but she still has to be careful. I won’t be able to be there all the time to watch over her.” A tear rolled down his cheek, and he put the picture into one of his drawers before wiping it away.

“That should be enough for today,” MBLAQ’s dance coach smiled widely, obviously pleased with their performance. “YEAH!!!” the members yelled, excited. “NIKE!” GO yelled. “1, 2, 3!” Seungho counted off, and in perfect synchronization, the members performed their Nikes. Joon collapsed afterwards, lying on the ground like a starfish. Mir, also panting from their dance practice, rolled over Joon’s legs and ended up with his back on Joon’s stomach. “YAH!! BANG CHEOLYONG!” Joon yelled, pushing the younger male off, “WHAT THE HECK DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING?” Mir, scurried behind Seungho, who was busy drying his hair off with a towel, “What, hyung? Seungho hyung did that to you on a variety and you didn’t say anything...” Joon stuttered, “Well that was hyung... And it was on a variety...” he muttered. Seungho chuckled, “Cheolyong-ah, why do you provoke your hyungs like this?” Mir shrugged, “I don’t know, it’s just fun!” He grinned and wrapped his arm around Seungho’s waist.  “Aish, Cheolyong get off me, you’re sweaty and nasty,” Seungho muttered. “YAH! BANG CHEOLYONG! I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!” Joon screamed. “Oh. That’s why,” Seungho sighed, “Yah Joon-ah, leave him alone.” Joon glared at Mir, “You lucky bastard.” Mir finally let go of the leader’s waist, and skipped out of the room, grinning like a maniac.

“Now, you call me when you get to Seoul, arasso?” “Neh,” Alex smiled, “Halmoni you worry too much about me, just take care of yourself!” They gave each other a hug, and Alex walked through the gate. Turning around, she smiled and waved at her grandmother, and then disappeared into the airport. Her grandmother stood there for another minute, and then smiled sadly to herself, “Aigo they grow up quickly.” She coughed a few times into her handkerchief and then walked home.

Alex POV

I don’t know how long I stood outside the door, just gulping and staring. It’s so dumb. I mean, my dad was his friend, and I met him twice before, so I shouldn’t be intimidated, but I was. I figured that people walking by would think I was an idiot, so I mustered up all my courage, and knocked on the door. I wasn’t leaving my halmoni to come here for nothing. “Neh, come in,” said a voice inside the room. Taking a deep breath, I went inside. “Annyoung hashimnika, Rain-ssi. Manasuh pangap seumnida,” I said with a formal bow, just like how my halmoni taught me. “Annyoung haseyo, Alex,” Rain said with a smile, “Your Korean is very good. I do not think the boys will have to even teach you! You do not have to be so polite, Alex. You can call me samchon, if you would like.” I smiled shyly, “Thank you uncle, and even more so for the apartment. I really don’t need it. I could just rent out someplace else.” Rain looked amused, “But we already bought it! Surely you don’t want me to have to sell it out again?” I couldn’t help but look shocked. His use of English was difficult to tell if he was joking or not, “Oh no no, I would never think of making you do such a thing. I just thought that maybe you hadn’t rented it yet. Sorry.” He chuckled, and reached into his desk, pulling something out, “Here, this is for you. I wasn’t sure if you had a picture of them, but anyways, I feel like you should have this.” He handed me a photograph, and I hesitated before taking it with two hands, like halmoni taught. “What is thi-oh...” I bit my lip. “I didn`t know you had a picture of all six of us together, uncle,” I could feel my eyes welling with tears. I haven’t ever seen a picture of my whole family together before the accident. “I-I don’t know how to thank you,” I said, holding my tears back, “I’ll treasure this for the rest of my life.

All of a sudden the room burst open with a group of boys. “Jihoon hyung, is she here ye-“ a boy with blonde hair and a loud voice said while entering the room with four other boys, then stopped short as he saw me. I quickly looked down and blinked back my tears before any of them could see. “Wah hyung, she’s here?!?!” the boy with the loud voice exclaimed. I tentatively looked over at him, and suppressed a giggle. Rain had put his hand over his face, and looked up to glare at the five boys crowding in the room, “Didn’t I tell you to BEHAVE when we have guests?” I didn’t understand what he was talking about, but I could tell from the tone of his voice that someone would get scolded. The boy with an egg-shaped head bowed his head, “Sorry hyung, I tried to stop them, but it was Joon, Cheondoong, and Cheolyong rushing... Me and GO couldn’t hold them all back.” I blankly looked around, slipping the picture into my pocket. Rain seemed to notice that I was there again and smiled apologetically, “This is Alexandra Jung. She is the tutor I told you about. She’s just living down the street from your dorm, so if you would like, you can take the day off to show her around and help her get settled.” The boys looked confused as the English just passed over their heads. I was about to politely bow to them when suddenly, the tallest boy, who looked like he came straight from a manga, stepped towards me and spoke in accented but good English, “Hello, my name is Cheondoong, and this is the group that needs your help in English.” He looked back at the other boys, who were awkwardly shuffling their feet. “As you can probably see, we desperately need your help. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alexandra,” he said with a shy smile. I couldn’t help but smile back at that adorable face, “It’s nice to meet you too, Cheo-Cheondoong sshi, you can call me Alex.” The boy with the loud voice spoke up again, “Aigoo she has such a cute accent!!” One of them looked vaguely familiar, and nudged the boy who just spoke, “Yah, you’ll creep her out.”

Rain looked to the boy with an egg-shaped head, “I take it you’ll take me up on that offer?” The boy looked confused. “Of course we will!” Cheondoong replied for him, a wide smile on his face. He walked up to me and smiled, “Come on! We’ll show you around! It’ll be fun!” I shyly smiled. These guys were so friendly. I wasn’t used to so much acceptance and friendliness aimed at me at once. Usually people avoided me, and I avoided them. I guess I could get used to this, smiling to myself. Rain cleared his throat, then said, “Alexandra, see if you can find your friend. I don’t think he recognizes you anymore,” he teased. I looked at the five boys standing in front of me. Byunghee oppa was one of these boys? But they were all so good-looking... I stepped in front of one of the boys, and he looked confused. “Annyoung haseyo, Byunghee oppa,” I said timidly. All of their eyes grew as wide as saucers, “HYUNG, YOU KNOW HER???” the boy with a loud voice yelled. Byunghee looked at me weirdly, “... Alex...?” he asked hesitantly.  “Neh, oppa,” I was so happy he recognized me, so I hugged him around his waist, smiling to myself. Suddenly I didn’t feel so alone anymore. At least I had a friend to count on, even if we didn’t speak the same language fluently. Rain chuckled at the shocked faces of the other boys, “So, Byunghee, I expect you to take care of her, neh?” Byunghee looked down at me and smiled. I was still attached to his waist so I awkwardly let go and stood back, blushing, “Neh hyung, you can count on me!” He pulled me closer to him, and slung an arm over my shoulders, “No one touches her!!” and let out a mock evil laugh. I laughed along with him, despite not really understanding what he said. Yup, that’s the hyper Byunghee I was friends with. “Let’s go check out your apartment, Alex!” Cheondoong said, “We’ll introduce ourselves to you there!” And so we left.
