We share a lot of things in common, as I looked back; it was one dark rainy evening in autumns that I first met her. It had been raining for four days on ends and weather had been unpredictable as almost every day the weather forecast failed to give us the right prediction. When it says no rain in the morning to begin with but it ended up heavy rains stormed the city of Seoul and not till late at night the rain stopped. I was in the room trying hard to coax little Inhwan to sleep by reading fairy tales to him, something he loved. Distant sounds of car stopping had overwhelmed his curiosity and to this day, he was still uncertain to why he had the urge inside that led him to make his way towards the main entrance to see a fragile porcelain doll stood before the doorway. Upon meeting her eyes, it was as if her eyes had some sort of charm and spell that locked his eyes, melting his heart. Our first meeting was somewhat awfully memorable.

“Liyin,” the nun in black dress had placed her hand over the frail little girl’s tensed shoulder. Taking a moment to stoop down by her side so that they are in eye level, “From now on, you’ll be living with us under the same roof,” she said along with a warm smile. “The boy before us is Kim Junsu. He’s the warden of the dorm and if you make any mistake, he won’t hesitate to point you out, Junsu is fierce.”

Averted his attention to the little girl before him, he stretched out his hand offering her a handshake, “My name is Kim Junsu as you know, nice to meet you and welcome to the family.”

Little Liyin evaded her eyes as she shook her hand with is, “Zhang Liyin, nice to meet you. I’m a Chinese and my Korean is not fluent, hope you can bear with it.”

“Chinese?” an brow arched, “Okay then, I’m eleven this year and looks like you’re very much younger than I do, address me by Junxiu gege then.” He said whilst head tilted in searching for her eye contact. “Liyin meimei, it’s not polite for you not looking at the opposite speaker when a person is talking to you,” he frowned.

He sounded rather fierce, Liyin thought and Sister Maria somehow was right. She dares not to lift her head to face the elder boy before her as she noticed something embarrassing in him. “Call me Liyin, I’m nine this year…”

“Yah…am I that bad looking that you must have that disgust on your face?” Little Junsu was on a verge of flaring up. “Can’t you just look at me and talk?”

Can no longer withhold his embarrassment, she held his arm for the first time and it startled Junsu. Liyin had pulled him to the corner of the living room and silently whispered to him, “Junxiu gege, your pants, there’s a….”

“What?” Junsu raised his voice. Covering her face, Liyin had no other options but to say out loud, “There’s a hole in your pants!”

“Zhang Liyin!” he ran into his room.

Time passed by us swiftly without our conscious and perhaps it was because Liyin existence that made the time gone by with a snap of fingers; we’re already at the age of 18 and 16. Because we have many things in common, we get along very well and having her with me spending most of the time in the cathedral, I barely get to lock myself in grief for my deceased parents. Liyin and I often bickered over unnecessary things and we knew those little arguments can be throw away but somehow, none of us willing to get rid of it. Perhaps, it was such moment that we could feel something special, an odd feeling that would only surfaced between both of us. Nevertheless, none of us willing to admit having this feeling towards one another not until a letter came from Austria that had made us realized the deepest thoughts inside.

We had been walking around the street hand in hand something we had always done, I was as if a brother Liyin appreciates and she was as though my little sister that I treasure. But that was how we felt and thought when we were little and things began to change as we grow older.

“Liyin…” he held her hand, firmly. Looking into her fawn eyes, intently “There’s something I need you to know. I received a letter from Austria; they’d accepted me and want me to fly over to France two years training.”

Looking up at him, eyes widened “You’re leaving Korea?”

He nodded his head, not daring to look up at her as he stared down at his own squeezing hands. “You do know my ambition is to become a musical theatre actor and this is a great opportunity; I’m giving it a try.”

“So you’re really leaving Korea,” she lowered her head.

“Liyin,” he grabbed hold on her small icy hands, “Before leaving, I need you to tell me this; I need to make things clear without any regret.” Gradually, he placed her hand against his chest where his heart beating. “Zhang Liyin, can you feel my heartbeats. Ever since you stepped into my life, this heart of mine doesn’t seem to be beating normally. Whenever you’re around, my heart palpitated trillion times faster than it was.” Closing in, he gingerly brought his free arm to Liyin’s face, caressing it. “It took me long enough to realized my feeling for you, this is love. A feeling of love between a boy and a girl, not brother and sister. Zhang Liyin, I’m certain that I love you.”

His sudden confession had shocked Liyin, it took her some time to comprehend what had he just said. “Junxiu gege, all this while I do have the same feeling for you but I wasn’t sure if you really do like me. In times, you’d be really nice to me but in split second, you’re so cold and even ignore me. I don’t know…” tears welling in her eyes, threatening to fall “Now that you’re leaving to France…I really don’t know…”

He was startled to know how exactly Liyin felt all this while, “Liyin, I just need to know. I’m afraid that I was the only one who has that feeling and you’re only seeing me as a brother.”

Shoving off his hand from her face, a tear escaped her eyes “What’s the point of verifying our feelings at this minute. You’ll be leaving…”

Holding on her shoulder, he gently shook her back and forth, calming her down a little. “Liyin, I’m not leaving forever and I’ll be coming back after two years, I promise. Two years later, we’ll meet again here.” Pulling her into his embrace, he could smell the warming scent of her hair. “Seven years, we’ve stayed together for seven years and we do love each other. These seven years of love, it won’t change me. My love for you will stay the same.”

“How sure you are?” she doubted, “You might find a better person than I do in those two years. Prettier than I am, kinder than me, smarter…” she stopped as Junsu cut her off by pressing his lips on hers. She was stunned at the first place and struggled in the process but gave in as he deepened his kiss giving her no room to fight back.

Pulling out from the kiss, Junsu looked into her eyes, his breathing was heavy. “No one could replace you in my heart. These seven years of love…it won’t change no matter what happens.” Caressing her tangled hair, he said “Future, no one could foresee what will be happening and all I could do is, keep my promise.” looking over to the bouquets of 12 roses, “Do you know the reason behind I bought 11 fresh roses and 1 plastic made rose?”

Liyin shook her head. “Because, I will love you till the last rose dies.” Tears poured out from her eyes, “I don’t worth you doing so much for me. You have a sister and a grandmother but I have nothing, I’m just a human who doesn’t know who exactly her parents are.”

“I love you for who you are…” a sound of beep from his watch telling them Christmas has arrived. “Merry Christmas…” he pecked on her lips before bringing up her left hand. Sliding in a ring made of grass, he said “Zhang Liyin, in three years time, when I return to Korea…you’ll be my official wedded wife. And in this mean time, you can never cheat on my back, okay…”

A smile crept on her face, “You’re a moron…”

“Yeah, I’m Mr. Moron,” he hugged her tightly in his arms, “And you’re my soon to be Mrs. Moron.” Resting his chin on her head, “Liyin…in two years time, we’ll meet again in the same place, same date, same time.”

“And from then on, we’ll never be apart…” she looked up to him.

“Mmm,” he nodded his head. Rummaging his hand trough his coat pocket, he took out a blue jewelry box and as he opened, it revealed a pair of blue diamond earring. “Here, you’ll put this on the right and I’ll have the left one.”

Riin tittered “Isn’t it enough to tie me down with a ring?”

“In case you’ll go for plastic surgery or something…I can still recognize you.”

Never has this come to my mind that, a fatal accident would delay our reunion and changed our story of love. The girl who I saw with a shinning eyes and a kind smile would be her, Zhang Liyin who you call Jang Riin, the girl in your dream.
