The devil found his angel

He didn’t know how it happened, how he came to even be near such a wonderful being, all his life, he was alone – no one could touch him, no one to hurt him like they used to… No one could ever love him.

Growing up in a fairly normal home –at least from the outside- Donghae was thought to be a normal boy but as he got older, trouble began to follow. It wasn’t as if he wanted or intended it too, he just appeared suddenly, succeeding in changing Donghae –without him even realizing it.

Eunhyuk was the boy’s name, he was Donghae’s first love, first kiss, first everything, unfortunately, even his first heartbreak.

The two boys met during the first year of high school. It was odd enough that they were two souls from different worlds – Eunhyuk being the natural rebel and Donghae being everyone’s best friend –it was strange to everyone how those two could get along, let alone be a couple.

They started dating during summer break; the two found each other irresistible and couldn’t help but feel attracted to one another. Donghae had given the other everything he had, his love, his body; he even threw away his future just to be with his lover. It seemed perfect, the two were peaceful during the early stages of their seemingly beautiful relationship–or so Donghae thought, but everything he could possibly hope for came crashing down on him and hit him on the head like a ton of bricks.

The latter found out that Eunhyuk had been cheating on him with a from the school across the street. To say that Donghae was heartbroken was an understatement. He immediately cut all ties he had with Eunhyuk, even though the latter came begging on his knees for forgiveness, Donghae was smart enough to know that it was just because Eunhyuk so desperately lusts over his body. He wouldn’t brag but hey, he did have one heck of a y body.

His parents were disappointed, they had earlier warned Donghae of what might happen if he chose that path yet going through his rebellious phase of being a teenager, he paid no heed to their warning and continued giving his all to his used-to-be lover, he was even nicknamed ‘the devil’ but now, everything changed. His parents were kind enough accept him back, even when he ran away from home (at the persuasion of Eunhyuk, of course). Unlike regular, stereotypical Asian parents, Donghae’s parents were open-minded and didn’t mind their son being gay, if it was for the right person. And trust them, Eunhyuk was definitely not that person. They had been worried sick about their depressed son, up to the point where they decided to uproot him and move to Seoul. There, he would start fresh and continue his senior year. As the saying goes, ‘out of sight, out of mind’.

The misconception of Donghae getting better was greatly interpreted by his parents. Instead, he grew more hostile and tough; being the most feared teenager in that part of Seoul –and at some point, Donghae even had a gang of his own. He would often get into fights with other gangs from the other parts of Seoul, sometimes he would win, and sometimes he would lose. His parents were of no help either; too busy with their jobs to even take a glance at what their son had become.

Donghae was walking down the road of downtown Seoul, where thieves and drug dealers dwell. He usually goes with his gang but this time, the sudden feeling of wanting to be left alone hatched in his heart –but that was impossible right? He’s a 'devil', they don’t have hearts. His feet unconsciously took him to the park, his head was up in the clouds thinking how it would be if he didn’t met Eunhyuk.

Donghae sighed for the first time today, none of that mattered now. No matter how much you want to change the past, even the smallest little detail, it couldn’t be done. A brief pain shot through his body, and he found himself on the floor with what feels like another person on top of him. He grunted. What did he do in his past life to make god so angry with him? Why of all things, he had to be cursed with bad luck?

He was about to shout at whoever it was on top of him, be it male or female, but didn’t have the heart to when he heard the cutest whine his ears have ever picked up in his life. It had to be a girl –no male on earth would be able to make that sound. The girl above him rushed to get off him, afraid that she might have hurt the male. She stood on the concrete pathway, apologizing endlessly to Donghae.

He found it amusing and chuckled lightly, his eyes turned into two beautiful crescents as he sat up, now facing the unknown girl. The girl didn’t know what the male found amusing, she barely even knew him for god’s sake! So, instead of making a fool out of herself, she opted to just stare at the male, his laugh was so enticing.

When the male finally looked up, he swore his heart stopped beating. She was the most beautiful woman, no-person, no-human being he had ever seen in his life, even more than Eunhyuk, which surprised him to no end. The girl wore a puzzled look, as if trying to figure out why the male had suddenly gone quiet. She shook her head, and offered her hand for him to shake. ‘Cute’ Donghae thought.

Wait. What? No, he wasn’t supposed to find her cute, he wasn’t supposed to fine anything cute! If anything, he should feel nothing at all. Not wanting to make the girl’s hand tired, he took it and she pulled him up – with such impressive strength! The girl apologized one more time, and seeing the male grin, she thought that he had forgiven her. She turned to walk away but her left arm was caught by the stranger.

“U-um, my name’s Donghae. What’s yours?” Donghae mentally slapped himself at the stupid introduction. Gosh, how could he be acting so stupid right now?!

The girl giggled cutely, and again, Donghae mentally slapped himself for thinking so. Just as she was about to reply, a middle-aged woman yelled ‘Hurry up!’ whom he was assuming was meant for the girl. She bowed 90° and ran to catch up with, what he presumes was her parents. He managed to catch her whisper of ‘I’m sorry, I have to go’ before she completely disappeared from his sight. Donghae sighed, when will he meet that beautiful girl again? Only god knows.

>>Time skip, next day<<

Donghae groaned as his table was hit with a ruler, yet again, by the Mathematics teacher, Mr. Lee.

“Donghae, for once, when you show up, at least have the decency to actually learn something?” Mr. Lee sighed for the umpteenth time. The creases on his forehead became even more visible as he thought about his worst student in Seoul High history.

“Ne sir!” And with that, he began sleeping. The whole class laughed at his behavior. It was weird enough that he even came to school. Most of the students even forgot what he looked like and today, they are reminded of how hot and handsome he actually looks, despite the disheveled hair and un-tucked shirt.

Hey, could you blame the guy if he said he was up all night thinking about what the beautiful girl’s name is?

I think not.

--

Donghae woke up to another hit on the table with a ruler but this time, it was Mrs. Park –his homeroom teacher.

“Class, we have a new student today.” She glared at Donghae before continuing, making sure he wasn’t dozing off again. “Come on in and introduce yourself.” Mrs. Park gestured to the door.

Everyone was silent when a girl walked in. Donghae was too preoccupied with staring at the clouds outside –having the window seat was definitely an advantage.

“Hello, my name is _______ and I’m going to be your new classmate. I hope you all take care of me!” The new girl said enthusiastically. The boys fawn over her natural cuteness while the girls stared in envy.

“You will sit next to…” Mrs. Park was contemplating on where to put the new student. There were so many hands rose up volunteering, which mostly (more like all of them) consists of boys.

“Lee Donghae!” The boys groaned and some sigh. The girls were now shooting lazers out of their eyes, too bad it was imaginary though. The girls knew they had no chance with Donghae, but hey, it wasn’t wrong to dream. But now with ______ in the picture, it was as if their hopes were crushed into tiny pieces.

Donghae, however, turned his head to the front of the class, emitting a small ‘hmm?’ which caused some of the guys to sigh behind him. Why did he have to be so lucky? –the other boys thought. Donghae’s eyes widened, it was that girl from before!

The girl seemed to remember him as she excitedly went to sit with him. All their classmates’ eyes were glued to the pair. Despite the obvious envy they had for the two, they couldn’t help but admit that they would go well together.

“Hey! It’s you! Donghae… Right?” ______ spoke. The rest of the classmates’ jaw dropped when Donghae said “yeah! I can’t believe you remember me!”

“YOU TWO KNOW EACH OTHER?!?!?!”

Donghae and ______ got shocked and winced at the loud volume of their classmates. Donghae, noticing she was uncomfortable with the attention, stood up and slammed his palm on his table, successfully silencing everyone.

“YEAH! GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?!” He glared at everyone. The class immediately looked in front, hoping they wouldn’t die, not now… They were too young!

Satisfied, Donghae sat back down and continued to talk with _______. She wasn’t even slightly shocked at his outburst, but instead thanked him. She really didn’t like attention on her. Donghae made a mental note of that and continued getting to know each other; completely ignoring Mrs. Park’s rants about her twelve cats at home.

A few months passed, well, not really, it had just been only two months since ______ had transferred here, she got along with everyone, the students, the teachers, and especially a young, handsome fellow named Donghae.

Unknowingly, he had started to fall for ______, not only because of her looks, but also her great personality and cheerfulness. She had such a big impact on his life; it completely turned around. He was starting to attend school and trying his best on tests, even his parents were surprised at his sudden change of behavior.

He knew it was all because of her. She was his everything; his sun, his moon, his life. She was like an angel sent down to fix his torn and messed up life. Even if she was a fallen angel, he’d never give her back to heaven, for he was too selfish. He loved her with all his heart and she accepted him for all that he is. She didn’t judge him when he told her his past, she didn’t give him dirty looks or stopped being his friend; but like an angel would, she smiled and encouraged him that life isn’t what he think it is, and that he should seize the day like any other person would. 'Make the best with what you’ve got, and in return, you will never feel like you’ve missed out on anything' -she would always tell him this whenever he was down or just needed a boost, and, of course, it worked everytime. That frown he would always have on would always turn into the brightest smile anyone has every seen; and its all because of her.

So, when graduation ended, he took her to Namsan Tower, got down on one knee and uttered the words he thought he would never have the chance to say.

“I love you so much, my angel. You have accepted me for who I am, loved me for who I am, changed my old devilish self into the man I am now, so now I ask you, will you stay with me forever? Will you marry me?”

Too shocked for words, ________ tackled her soon-to-be husband and nodded repeatedly, showering his handsome face with kisses. The other couples around them clapped and cheered for the two but they weren’t acknowledged by the two couple who had just initiated their first, sweet chaste kiss.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Honey, what are you doing?” The familiar saccharine-like voice spoke from the living room. Donghae grinned to himself before replying “Just writing something!”
His wife came in Donghae’s study, looking as stunning as ever, even with a baby growing in her stomach. “Really? What about?”
“Us.” His reply was short but it was enough.
‘I finally found my angel.’ Really? How cheesy is that?” _______ giggled as she read the last words he wrote. Donghae got up from his chair and hugged his wife from behind, caressing her stomach in the process. “You are my angel. Thank you.”
“For what?” his wife asked, amused, as she laid her head on his broad shoulder.
“For fixing me. For loving me. For accepting me. For everything. I love you.” He muttered before turning his wife around and kissing her on the lips, careful not to hurt their baby. _______ didn’t have to say anything, for she knew that her husband understood what she wanted to say: ‘I love you too’
It is true. I have finally found my angel.
