Foreword

Six years ago, I stood in front of the gates of my new High School and watched people wearing the same uniform walk in groups. I wasn't used to wearing uniforms. After being stuck inside a house that looked like a prison to me, getting permission to go to a normal high school like a normal kid was the best thing that happened in my dull life.

When the bell rang, I didn't know what to do. Everyone started to run, so I did too. Suddenly, a black van entered through the white gates and I stopped myself to watch it pass me. Everyone who ran stopped behind the vehicle as the door opened and six people got down. With that, I found myself getting thrown into a tornado of people running towards the group.

Finally when I got out, I found a man wearing a suit staring down at me. I stood up and straightened my tie and smiled awkwardly.

"Are you Park Sung-ssi's daughter?" he asked, picking his ear. I nodded. "Follow me" he said, and I walked behind him after staring at the crowd for couple of moments. He led me to the staff room and introduced me to the vice-principal and my homeroom teacher. They all shook my hand as if I was some famous person. The music teacher couldn't stop talking about my dad. I smiled and looked at my homeroom teacher. She said she'd lead the way and followed her to the class room.

After lunch, everyone gathered to the music room. I looked at everyone who had gloomy faces due to the test. Since it's my first day, the teacher said I could skip but I said I'm okay with taking the test. Couple of groups performed before me, and the teacher called me up. I walked up and bowed awkwardly and got on to the stage where the grand piano was located at. I sat in front of it, closed my eyes and started playing my favourite song.

When I stood up after playing the piece, everyone stared at me and slowly started to applaud. With all the applauds, I walked over and sat on my seat. A girl with a French braid slid next to my seat and smiled.

"Park Joanne right? Nice to meet ya! I'm Kim Jinhee" she said, introducing herself. "Nice playin'"

"Thanks."

"You're the second" she added, smiling. I looked at her. "To touch that piano." she nodded. "The owner's gonna be mad at you, but he's a nice guy. Don't worry much" she winked.

"Thanks. For the warning."

"No problem. That's what friends for" she smiling brightly.

Since she said we're friends, I decided to ask her about the guys from this morning. She told me that the six guys were from a entertainment company, training to be super stars. She said she can't wait for their debut and there's no other like them. I wondered what made them different from all the others. To me they were all the same. They sang, danced and made people fall in love without even knowing who they are. They had to pay attention to the smallest detail and never do something that is against their company's will. They were being controlled by everyone yet they were forced to smile in front of others. My life and theirs were no different. They might have chosen their lives to be like that, and I wished to have the same right to choose. Then I would have walked away from mine.

After school, not wanting to go home, I walked back to the music room. I didn't like playing piano, but the expectations were too much. Being the daughter of one of the famous piano players in the country, I was expected to play the piano as well. I sat in front of it again and started playing my favourite piece; yes, the same piece that got me a perfect score in today's test. The piece was written by my grandfather. It was played for the first time by my father. And here I was, playing it again. Keeping up with the legend.

"Wah... I've never heard anyone playing such a beautiful song so emotionlessly." spoke someone, and I spun around to see the owner of the voice. A guy - probably a senior - stood in front of me. He had his uniform shirt undone, showing his black v-neck, and he stood in front of me with both his hands stuffed into the school pant pockets. He had his backpack swung on to his right shoulder. "Play it again. Just... Maybe... try to put emotion into what you're playing" he said, and I started again. After I was done, I looked at him again an watched him shake his head in disappointment. "How old are you?"

"Fifteen" I spoke.

"Still young." he said, walking up to the stage and throwing his backpack to the side. "Think of someone who you love... and miss. Your childhood friend, or your grandpa or grandma. Or, think of your first love - if you already have one"

"I don't have friends. I see my grandparents at home every day. And I don't have a first love" I spoke, and he stared at me.

"Wow. What kind of a life you've been living?" he asked, and I stared at him.

"A prison life" I spoke, and he covered his face.

"Fine then. Close your eyes and imagine your favourite... fairytale. Then imagine you being the princess and dancing with the prince"

"My favourite fairytale was Mulan. She didn't dance with a prince"

"Just imagine!" he commanded. "Now play" he said, and I did. When I finished, I looked at him. "The piece's name is 'For My First'. It has to be played beautifully, gently. You're ruining the song for me" he said, kicking me out of the seat and sitting down.

Now I was standing next to the piano. As he touched the piano and started playing the same song I've been playing ever since I was little, I felt as if I have been looking at the world in a wrong eye all this time. I don't know if I was hallucinating, but I saw butterflies fly as he played the song. I looked at the guy who was playing, and suddenly, the wall I built around my heart was breaking into pieces. I closed my eyes and watched my whole world collapse to the ground; one note at a time. When I opened my eyes, I felt tears coming out of my eyes.

"That's how you do it! Bam!" he yelled standing up and looking at me. Suddenly, his smile faded away. "Did I make you cry? Sorry. I didn't mean to"

"It was beautiful" I spoke, and he took his time and smiled.

"Was it that good? I mean... I added couple of adlibs and stuff..." he said, then looked at me. "Seeing you being so touched by my performance, I'll let you use my piano." he said, patting my head gently. "I'm Son Dongwoon. If you need help, just call my name" he said, disappearing in front of me.
