Kim Sunggyu In Love

Man In Love

Kim Sunggyu had always considered himself a cool guy and he wasn’t the type to arrange something special but right now he wanted to do something for his girlfriend.

It was just a few days before their first year anniversary and he had to plan something to surprise her - something that would make him even cooler in front of his girlfriend’s eyes.

As much as he wanted to do it alone he swallowed his pride and asked his friends for help. He wanted to make it a very special and memorable day for her.

Sunggyu went to Sungjong’s house since the latter had told him to go there so they could plan for his special event. He approached the youngest, thinking that since he was still young he might have cooler ideas than his other friends.

He was in front of Sungjong’s unit when he spotted a heart shaped box on the floor. He got curious so he bent down and was about to open it when something suddenly appeared that almost gave him a heart attack. To his dismay Sungjong had witnessed everything, the younger man supressed his laughter so his hyung wouldn’t feel more embarrassed.

“Hyung it’s just a cat.” he remarked as he took the cute furry animal in his arms. Sunggyu was still clutching onto his chest as he followed Sungjong inside.

“Who the heck would even put that creature,” he said as he pointed to the kitten to which Sungjong protectively hugged away from his hyung. “into a box like that?” he added as he made a disgusted look to the red box he had just pointed.

“Stop acting cool hyung, I’ve already seen you act lame just a while ago.” Sungjong retorted as he placed the kitten down and started to look for clothes.

Sunggyu sat down on the sofa with his feet crossed since he didn’t want to have a close encounter with the hairy animal. He looked at his dongsaeng who was recklessly throwing out clothes to wear for his family dinner that night. Sungjong always had a family dinner every Sunday night and he has to wear something presentable. Sunggyu just sat there for a good five minutes watching him when Sungjong suddenly exclaimed.

“What if you buy her a cute pet?” Sungjong asked as he carried the cat and brought it near his hyung. Sunggyu immediately squatted away and demanded the younger man to get it away from him. He fell flat on his and the cute animal jumped away from the sudden thud. Sungjong snickered at how scared his friend looked like. Seriously he was a big guy but was afraid of a helpless little cat.

“You scared it away.” Sungjong said as he turned his direction to where the cat ran totally ignoring his hyung. Sunggyu stood up properly and dusted off his clothes.

Sungjong smiled when he saw the feline sitting on top of a light pink colored shirt. “Do you want me to wear this?” he asked as he once again carried the cat and checked the clothing lying on the floor.

“I’ll leave now, you’re no help.” Sunggyu murmured as he walked out of the apartment. Sungjong didn’t even send his hyung off, he was too engrossed thanking the cat for finding an outfit for him.

Sunggyu then tried approaching Dongwoo the next day. He’s more mature than Sungjong and might be the one who could help him.

“Dongwoo-yah where are you?” Sunggyu asked as he looked through the windows of his friends’ house. He rang the doorbell for the nth time but no one was answering so he decided to call him.

“Oh hyung! I’m on my way back just wait for me. I have something that could help you.” after hearing him say that Sunggyu grew a smile on his face. Dongwoo was really a very reliable person and so he patiently waited.

Dongwoo was happily walking his way back home carrying a number of books with him. What better way to plan is to read, he thought. He cheerfully greeted his friend and welcomed him to his home.

Sunggyu sat down with a smile on his face. His curiosity was eating him, Dongwoo was really happy that he thought he had the perfect plan in mind. Sunggyu’s smile then disappeared once his dongsaeng showed him the books.

“I’m going to give her that?” he asked as he raised his brow.

“Of course not.” Sunggyu heaved a sigh but his arms suddenly deflated when he heard his next sentence. “You’re going to read it.”

“I’m going now!” he said as he stood up but Dongwoo stopped him.

“C’mon hyung just try it. I’m sure you’ll learn something from here.” he then took one book and read the title. “Here you can write her a letter.”

Sunggyu got out of his friends’ grip and started making his way. Dongwoo stood in front of the door and continued to persuade his hyung. Sunggyu knew how persistent he was so he had no choice but to comply.

Hours had passed and Sunggyu was growing impatient. He took a glance at Dongwoo and saw that he was smiling and even scribbling down some notes. He sighed and just turned his attention back to the book and continued on reading.

At the end of the day Dongwoo had managed to compose a very short poem while Sunggyu wasn’t able to complete even a simple letter.

“Let’s see what you’ve got.” Dongwoo said but Sunggyu crumpled and threw the paper on the floor. He ruffled his hair in frustration as he stood up and left his friend dumbfounded. He had spent the whole day reading but he wasn’t able to make something productive.

Sunggyu went to Soorin’s university and waited for her to come out. It was part of their routine already, he would always wait for his girlfriend and take her home.

“Yah! What happened to your hair?” Soorin asked as soon as she saw him. She then fixed her boyfriends’ messy hair.

“Don’t think of anything erted.” Sunggyu quickly retorted as soon as he saw the look she was giving her. She couldn’t help but laugh at the sudden change of his mood.

“I didn’t say anything. You’re such a byuntae.” she said as she playfully punched his arms.

Sunggyu didn’t want to work his brains out again so he decided to pay his best friend a visit. He had always thought that his best friend was the ladies’ man but he didn’t like his way of getting the girl so he didn’t approach him first. He was just too greasy and Sunggyu didn’t want to be like him.

Sunggyu greeted the kids and they all bowed to him showing their respect. Woohyun knew that his friend wouldn’t visit him if he didn’t have something bothering him so he asked him right away.

Sunggyu then told him what happened, he had asked two persons already and yet he wasn’t able to do anything right. First he didn’t like the idea of giving a pet since he was afraid and second he didn’t like to write her a letter simply because he couldn’t put his feelings into writing.

Woohyun saw how down his friend was and thought of something he could actually do. He knew how picky and naggy his best friend could be so he had to choose something which would be easy for him. A sudden idea came to him.

“I know hyung!” he exclaimed gaining Sunggyu’s attention. “Why don’t you play the piano and sing her a song?” he suggested as he pulled him towards the piano located at the side of the room. Sunggyu kind of liked the idea but he didn’t feel like doing it. He shook his head in disapproval but Woohyun made him. He actually threatened his older friend that he would be doing aegyo in front of him if he won’t try to which the older man quickly complied not wanting to see his friends’ failed aegyo.

Sunggyu placed his fingers on the keyboard and started to play a melody. Soon he started singing as well. When the children heard him they approached him and started to protest at how awful his playing was. Some even gave him slight punches.

Sunggyu then immediately stopped and became less confident with his singing skills. Woohyun tried his best to hold in his laughter but he ended up laughing out loud at his friend. The older man was always their target when it came to bullying and even the little children decided to play around with him.

Woohyun’s cousin, the owner of the day-care, then came and assisted the children outside to where their parents were waiting. Before she completely left though she told Sunggyu to not believe the children because what they meant was the opposite. “Those kids just love to play around but trust me I think your girlfriend would be happy if you sing for her.”

“We’re sorry ahjussi but you have a very nice voice. Nicer than our teacher over there.” a little girl said as she pointed over Woohyun.

“See hyung, you can do that for her.” the younger man said as he looked at Sunggyu.

“I don’t want to end up being a punching bag for those brats again.” Sunggyu said as he stood up. He was already hurt at what happened even if he was assured that the kids were just joking. He suddenly got scared that Soorin might have that kind of reaction as well.

“Where are you going?” Woohyun asked. Sunggyu didn’t bother answering back instead he waved goodbye to his friend and left.

“I guess it’s just you and me now.” Woohyun said as he pointed to the big stuffed bear behind him. He took the white bear and placed it beside him. He then started to play the piano and sing.

Soorin just finished her last class and was on her way. She spotted someone outside that made her smile.

“Why do you look so down?” she asked as she linked arms with him.

“Kids hate me.” he suddenly blurted out as he remembered what happened earlier and that made Soorin laugh.

“They don’t hate you. You just have to get friendlier with them and lose that scary face of yours.” she then pinched his cheeks.

The next day, he was to spend it with Sungyeol. Somehow he was regretting that he even asked his friends to help him. He was slowly losing his patience as well as his hope to be able to make a special event for the special girl in his life.

He was afraid of what Sungyeol might suggest him to do considering that he was such a playful kid. Sungyeol had welcomed him with a smile on his face.

“So what do you have in mind?” he asked as he followed Sungyeol and was surprised that they were in the kitchen.

“Why don’t you make her some cookies? Girls love homemade cookies.”

“Isn’t it the other way around? Besides I don’t want to do it it’s a lot of work for me.” Sunggyu answered.

“Stop being a grandpa it’s actually easy hyung.” Sungyeol then put on his apron. He then took Sunggyu’s arm and asked him to wear an apron as well.

Sungyeol took out a book from underneath the table and prepared all the ingredients. Sunggyu stood beside him and watched.

“Okay then let’s start.” Sungyeol exclaimed excitedly as he took the flour. He had asked Sunggyu to open it and it earned them a shower of white powder. They both started wiping their face clean.

Sunggyu decided to just sit down but Sungyeol didn’t let him. The young man had assisted his friend in making the cookies to which he regretted since Sunggyu had wasted a lot of the ingredients.

“Alright now all we need are the letters we would put inside.” Sungyeol said as he pointed at the cut out papers on the table.

“I am not going to put some cheesy line on those cookies. I’m done with this!” he said as he removed his apron and placed it on the table. Sungyeol could only sigh as he watched his friend leave.

He then started to write ‘I Love You’ on the paper and once he was done he made the cookies. It would be put to total waste if he wouldn’t make it.

Once the cookies were done he took one and broke it in half. He took out the paper and started to eat it. He then decided to just bring the cookies to his mother so he looked for a jar and started to decorate it.

“Why do you look so messy?” Soorin asked as soon as she saw Sunggyu right outside the campus gates. She took out her handkerchief and cleaned him up. There was still some flour left on his hair and even on his clothes. “Did you cook?” she asked once she was done.

Sunggyu shook his head and took her hand and intertwined it with his.

“What have you been up to these past few days?” she asked suspiciously.

“Nothing, let’s have dinner I’m already hungry.”

Out of the friends he had asked Sungyeol had the nicest idea but he wasn’t gifted with such skills so he was afraid he would just fail with the cookies. Now here he was waiting for Hoya. His friend had suggested him to just buy her a gift and he knows the best place to find one.

“This is a really famous shop and I’m sure you’ll find something she likes here.” Hoya said as he led the way inside. Sunggyu felt uncomfortable since they were the only guys inside the store. He noticed Hoya wasn’t bothered at all so he decided to just shrug off his uneasy feeling.

Hoya found a cute bag and showed it to Sunggyu, the latter shook his head saying that she doesn’t like those types of bags. Hoya continued showing different styles but Sunggyu disapproved to everything. Finally Sunggyu told him that he didn’t want to give her a bag.

“You should’ve said so earlier so I didn’t have to look for bags.” Hoya said as he placed the bag back on the shelf.

Sunggyu realized that the people were staring at them and some were even whispering, thinking that they were a couple, so he decided to look somewhere away from Hoya but the latter had followed him.

They both ended up looking at the shoes. Sunggyu mentally facepalmed himself when Hoya tried one of the shoes, he punched his friend and told him to stop what he was doing. He then whispered to him that the people around were being suspicious of them. Hoya couldn’t stop himself from laughing out loud.

Sunggyu then slowly walked away from his friend and continued looking at the shoes as if he didn’t know him. To his dismay he can’t seem to find something that would suit her.

On the other hand, Hoya stopped laughing when he was told off by the saleslady. He held down his head in shame. He then looked for Sunggyu but instead something caught his eye.

“How about this one?” Hoya then showed him a heart shaped necklace. When Sunggyu saw it he knew it would be the perfect gift. He looked at the price and his face fell, he couldn’t afford such a price, blame his low salary.

He left the shop disappointed. He had found the perfect gift but he couldn’t afford it. Hoya felt bad that he wasn’t able to help. He didn’t know that the stores’ prices were very expensive. He had just asked a friend and that place was the one she told him.

To make it up to his hyung he had told him he would treat him dinner but the latter politely refused saying that he was already tired and that he still had to fetch Soorin. Hoya couldn’t help but heave a sigh.

“Is something wrong I noticed you being so down lately?” she asked concerned about her boyfriend. Sunggyu couldn’t hide his frustration so he just kept quiet.

“By the way why don’t we just eat out or watch some movie on our anniversary.” she suggested to which Sunggyu just nodded. For Soorin he seemed uninterested to which she grew disappointed. If only she knew how stressed he was in preparing.

Sunggyu lost all hope and he wasn’t expecting that Myungsoo could help him as well. His friends had failed to help him so what makes Myungsoo different? Besides he wasn’t the expressive type of guy so what could he advice to him?

He was waiting for his girlfriend’s class to finish and he ended up meeting Myungsoo. The latter had noticed how down his hyung was so he asked him what his problem was.

“Why don’t you just text her and ask her out to dinner?” Myungsoo stated as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“I give up.” Sunggyu said as he raised both his hands in the air.

Myungsoo then called Sungyeol and the others to have an emergency meeting.

“He didn’t like any of the ideas you guys gave? I don’t even want to know what you guys suggested.” Myungsoo said as he looked at his friends.

They all pondered on how they could help their problematic hyung.

“Hey guys! Have you seen Sunggyu? We were supposed to meet but I didn’t see him in front of the campus gates.” Soorin asked breaking their train of thoughts.

“Nope we didn’t see him.” Sungyeol answered.

“Did he tell you something? Does he have a problem? He looks so depressed these past few days.” the six guys looked at each other contemplating on whether they should tell her or not.

“You see hyung is planning something special but we think he has failed.” Dongwoo answered to which he earned a smack from Hoya.

“So that’s what’s bothering him all this time?”

“Yeah he even asked us to help him but he didn’t like our ideas.” Woohyun answered.

Sunggyu was making his way to meet Soorin when he saw them huddled together.

“Soorin!” he called and everyone was caught off guard. They were in the middle of planning when they heard him.

“Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you and I bumped into them and asked for your whereabouts but they didn’t know.” Soorin said in one breath.

“You already know, right?” he asked and disappointment was evident on his face as much as she wanted to deny it she couldn’t lie to him so she slowly nodded her head.

“Let’s just go with your plan then.” he said as he took her hand and they left.

“Don’t be sad, I’m thankful for your effort even if you weren’t able to make it.” she did her best to comfort him but it was no use.

“I just wanted to make it a memorable first anniversary for you.” he then pouted to which she found cute. One thing she loved about Sunggyu was the effort he always makes. She knew he wasn’t good at certain things and yet he tries it just for her and that was enough for her.

D-DAY

Sunggyu ruffled his hair in frustration. He couldn’t sleep last night still thinking on what he should do for today. He was about to completely give up and just have dinner with his girlfriend when a sudden idea came to mind. He quickly called Sungjong and asked him for a favour.

“Hyung, what are these lights for?” Sungjong asked as he handed the box. Sunggyu messed with his dongsaeng’s hair before taking it.

Sunggyu happily made his way to Soorin’s university. He was looking for Myungsoo and thankfully he had bumped into him.

“Oh! Hey hyung, what are you doing here?” he asked.

“You have your last class with Soorin, right?” Sunggyu asked and the younger male nodded. “Tell her I won’t be able to meet her after her class because I have to work overtime.”

“Yeah sure.” Myungsoo said as he watched his hyung leave in a hurry.

“Mind telling me what these decorations are for?” Hoya asked as he eyed the box he was holding. Sunggyu didn’t bother answering, he just took the box and left.

He started decorating the place with lights and fixed the table in the center. It was his first time actually doing something like that so it took him time. It was already dark when he was done.

He was happy at the result. Once he had the lights the dark rooftop shone. He climbed up the ladder and spread his arms at his success.

He almost fell down when he heard someone clearing their throat it was the owner of Soorin’s apartment complex. He got down and bowed his head.

“I just want to inform you that she just arrived.” the old lady said.

Sunggyu bowed once again and thanked her for the umpteenth time for letting him use the rooftop. He then went down and knocked on Soorin’s door.

Soorin was about to start cooking her dinner when she heard the doorbell ring. She was surprised to see Sunggyu through the peephole. She quickly opened the door and let him in. “I thought you would be working overtime?” she said as she tried to hide the smile on her face. She was actually disappointed when she learned that Sunggyu had to work overtime, I mean who wouldn’t? It was their first year anniversary and he wasn’t with her to celebrate.

“Yeah but I was able to finish it earlier than expected. I’m sorry we couldn’t eat out for our anniversary.” he said as he hugged her from behind.

“It’s alright, your work is also important.” she said then gave him a quick peck on the cheeks.

“Mind going with me for a while before you start making dinner?” he said as he let go of her and took her hand. Before Soorin could even answer she was already dragged out of her unit.

“Why are we going to the rooftop?” she asked although she knew that Sunggyu loved staying there. They would mostly spend their time there when he visits because he said that the place was nice.

Soorin’s eyes widened when she saw the rooftop shining brightly and had been arranged. The table in the middle was decorated with a candle and a meal was already set for them.

“Happy Anniversary.” Sunggyu said as he looked at his girlfriends’ surprised expression.

“It’s not much but I just want you to remember this day.” Soorin then hugged him and gave him a kiss on the lips.
