Break The Silence

Break The Silence

Jinki could remembered the first time he saw Taemin at school which happened during the 1st week of the school year.  He was a 4th year highschool student while Taemin was still in his 1st year.  He was taller than Taemin and saw that the younger was clearly having a hard time trying to reach a book from a high shelf.  Jinki took the book and handed it to Taemin who looked at him in shock. Jinki simply smiled and shrugged before walking away, not waiting for Taemin to thank him.  He wondered if he would have been able to hear Taemin's voice if he stayed and waited any longer.

Jinki may be a smart student but even smart students get bored in class as well.  He was simply staring out of the window.  He knew that his Math teacher wouldn't bother him because he was good at solving math equations.  The last time his Math teacher scolded him for sleeping and made him answer in front of class, Jinki answered all questions correctly and even explained how he solved each one.  Since then, his Math teacher never bothered him.

Jinki stared at the freshmen playing soccer.  His eyes finally focused on one student.  It was Taemin though at that time, he still didn't know Taemin's name yet.  Perhaps Taemin had sensed that somebody was looking at him because his head turned from side to side.  Then, he finally looked up and saw Jinki.  Taemin was able to recognize Jinki as the one who helped him in the librarry from the other day, so he smiled and waved at Jinki.

Jinki smiled and waved back.

They learned about each other's name in the hallways.  Jinki with his own group of friends. Somebody is bound to call him by his name.  Same goes with Taemin.  Taemin with his own group of friends and somebody calls him by his name.

"Ah, so that's his name,"  Jinki thought and didn't know that Taemin was also thinking of the same thing.

They met again at a house party where there was some underage drinking, smoking, drugs, and going on.  Taemin had something to drink, so he was a bit drunk and wasn't aware that he was dancing ily.  Some guys and girls started feeling up Taemin who became rather uncomfortable about it but couldn't speak out because most of them were older students.

Luckily, Jinki grabbed Taemin by the arm, telling the others that he's going to borrow Taemin for a while.  Taemin couldn't hear Jinki's voice very well over the loud music, but he figured that Jinki said something like that as he was later on being dragged outside the house.

Taemin was embarrassed at the fact that he couldn't stop his hiccups and that he couldn't walk straight.  Jinki wrapped an arm around Taemin's shoulder to help Taemin walk straight.  They went to a convenience store where Jinki bought a cup of ramen and a bottle of water which they both shared.

After eating, a man on a motorcycle came.  Jinki had no idea how the guy looked as there was a helmet, but Taemin seems to know the guy as he took the extra helmet from the guy.  Taemin placed on the helmet.  He wrote something on the receipt and gave it to Jinki before he went for a ride on the guy's motorcycle.

Jinki saw that there was a cellphone number on the receipt, no doubt that it was Taemin's.

Did you get home safely?  Jinki texted when he arrived at his own house.

Yes. The one who fetched me earlier was my cousin, Minho.  Taemin texted back.

Jinki smiled because of Taemin's explanation even though he didn't ask who that guy on the motorcycle was.

I see.  Goodnight.

Goodnight, hyung.

Jinki and Taemin never spoke at school or whenever they happen to see each other outside school, but they've always exchanged smiles and texted each other.

"Did you get yourself a girlfriend? You've been texting a lot these days and you don't ever reply to my messages unless they're important school stuff."  Key pouted.

"It's just Taemin." Jinki replied though his eyes were still glued to his cellphone's monitor and his fingers were busy pressing the cellphone buttons.

"Taemin? As in that cute freshman kid who is prettier than most girls?! Since when did you two become close?"  Key wondered because he and Jinki were always hanging out together, so he never saw Jinki and Taemin together at all.

"Since that last house party we went to.  He gave me his number.  We've been texting each other since then."

Key's jaw dropped.  "How come you never told me about this before?!  Don't you know how many guys and girls in this school are dying to have his cellphone number? We could sell his number and make lots of money!!!"  Key was known as a reliable informant, but you have to pay him money first.

Jinki frowned.  "I'm sure there are other information you could sell." He sent his message and then locked his cellphone.  Since Jinki was Key's bestfriend, Key never went through Jinki's stuff without permission unlike what he does to other people.

Key pouted. "Fine, but coud you ask Taemin for Minho's number instead?"

Jinki blinked.  "How did you know about Taemin's cousin?"

"He's a popular guy in SM Highschool. You're so lucky to have me as your bestfriend to keep you updated." Key rolled his eyes.

"You're so lucky to have me to keep you updated with school stuff." Jinki replied, emphasizing the last two words. "I'll text Taemin about that later.  We have to get to class now."

Minho says he wants to meet Key personally first.  Taemin texted the details when and where and that Key should dress up nicely.

Jinki raised an eyebrow as he read Taemin's message. It looks like Key and Minho will be going out on a date.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Jinki noticed that there seems to be a game going on between him and Taemin which is something called "No Talking" game.  Maybe Jinki's mind was making it up, but he was pretty sure that despite the smiles and the text messages, Taemin hadn't ever spoken a word to him.  He was pretty sure he hadn't spoken a word to Taemin either.

There were times when Taemin would suddenly show up beside him.  When Jinki would notice Taemin's presence, Taemin would simply smile at him.  Jinki would smile back before continuing to do what he was doing or  to where he was going.  After a while, Taemin would pat or poke Jinki just to let the other know that he was leaving. Those moments have been happening a lot lately.

Jinki wondered what would happen when one of them breaks the silence.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"You guys are freaking me out."

Taemin and Jinki looked at Key bewilderedly.  They were pretty sure that Key was being the freaky one right now.

"Gosh! Even the expression on your faces are the same!!! It's either you guys are actually twins despite the stupid 4-year gap or you two have some sort of telepathy.  Which one is it?!" Key gave them weird accusations.

"Hyung, what the heck are you talking about?" Taemin spoke which actually surprised Jinki because Jinki never heard Taemin speak this clearly before.  He could hear Taemin speaking with his group of friends in parties, in the cafeteria, in the hallways and wherever else but the background and atmophere were always surrounded by noise.  But right now, the room was mostly silent save for a few bicker here and there with the decorations, nothing loud though.

Just so you know, they were currently decoration the school for the upcoming school festival.  "You guys aren't speaking a single word to each other and yet you two get along so well while here I am busy arguing at our fellow schoolmates who can't even cut paper flowers properly!!!" Key sighed as he saw another classmate failing at paper flowers.

Taemin just suddenly showed up in their classroom and helped silently.  The others didn't even notice Taemin's presence until Key finally spoke up.  Then there were whispers spreading... something about Jinki and Taemin being in a relationship.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The school festival was finally over.  It was late at night, so the students decided they would clean tomorrow morning instead.  Jinki's friends had left first while Jinki stayed behind in the classroom, telling them that he'll be leaving a little later and not telling them the reason why he stayed behind.  It was because Taemin had sent him a text message earlier to not leave the classroom yet.

The lights of the classroom suddenly went off, but the classroom wasn't completely dark as the moonlight shone through the classroom's windows.  A familiar pair of arms wrapped around him.  It was loose enough for Jinki to move and turn around.  He didn't need for his eyes to adjust to the dark as the moonlight shone over Taemin's face.

Jinki smiled and caressed Taemin's face.  The younger one looked so beautiful.  He wanted to tell it to Taemin but that would mean breaking their silence. Taemin solved Jinki's dilemma by moving closer and placing his soft lips on Jinki's.  That way, they would be kissing and not talking.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Jinki finally decided to tell Key about his unique relationship with Taemin. Key instantly believed Jinki despite it being weird because he really hadn't seen Taemin and Jinki talking at all.  The few times Jinki talked to him about Taemin before, Jinki would always mention something about a text message.

"It may seem like special, romatic, magical, and whatever, but you both can't be silent forever if you really want a real relationship." Key said, definitely not into that kind of romance or relationship.  It was just plain weird for him.

"But I don't even know if he wants a real relationship."

"That's why you need to talk."

"But I don't want to break what we have right now."

"Jinki, it's all up to you. We're graduating in 2 months and leaving this school."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Taemin had noticed how Jinki no longer smiled at him, how the older flinched when he touched him, and how the older stayed away and  avoiding him.

Was I wrong, hyung? I thought you liked me or do you just not like me that way?

Taemin felt even more frustrated when Jinki didn't reply to his text message.  They went on like that until graduation.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Taemin attended the graduation as he wanted to see Jinki standing in the school's auditorium for one last time.   Who knew when he'll be seeing Jinki again after this? It's more like Jinki wouldn't want to see him again considering how the other have been avoiding him for the past 2 months.

As expected, Jinki was the valedictorian.  He was delivering his speech when he found Taemin among the crowd.  For the first time in 2 months, they made eye contact. Then Jinki shifted his eyes as he talked about experiences with his classmates, about how teachers guided them, about parents who supported them, and other sentimental stuff.  Taemin started crying as if he was one of the students graduating.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Four years passed, Jinki was walking in the university school grounds when he sensed someone purposely walking beside him.  He turned to see a tall student.  He stopped walking when he realized that the tall student was Taemin.

Taemin walked a few steps forward before turning around to look at Jinki.  "Good morning, hyung."  Those were the first words Taemin spoke to Jinki from the day they first met.

Jinki had thought of different scenarios.  He imagined what Taemin's first words would be and he imagined what his own first words to Taemin would be.  He wanted to laugh at how his imagination was exagerrated and that in reality, Taemin's first few words were just a simple morning greeting.  How does he reply to that?  "Good morning, dongsaeng."

It was like highschool all over again except they were finally speaking to each other.
