Mr. Suit and Tie

Mr. Suit and Tie

Jessica stifled a yawn, her eyelids threatening to close as she shook her head, willing herself to stay awake and fight the drowsiness wanting to take over. It was too early in the morning for her liking but Taeyeon had asked her to help with the baking. The bakery, Soshi’s Bakery, was becoming more and more popular, something that none of the girls had seen coming. While Soshi’s Bakery’s soaring popularity was a pleasing surprise it was also a nuisance…at least to Jessica who was required to wake up five every morning to help Taeyeon and Hyoyeon with the baking before the bakery actually opened.

They had made hundreds of muffins, bread, bagels and the works, not stopping until they had run out of trays to bake anymore. The baking was over but there had been more work to be done. The three girls arranged and decorated the pastries and bread, neatly and appetizingly on the displays for the customers to see. By the time they had placed the last muffin, it was time for the bakery to open much to Jessica’s chagrin. A line had already been form before the bakery had even opened and as soon as the doors were unlocked and opened, floods of people entered the store in waves.

Never in her life did she ever work so hard. Customer after customer, Jessica served with no break until it was nearly two and the line was thinning. “Great job girls.” She dimly heard Taeyeon from the kitchen. “Lunch rush is nearly over. You guys can take a break.”

Jessica let out a sigh of relief, her stomach growling from lack of food and attention. “Finally.” She exclaimed but just as Jessica was about to undo her apron, the door opened, the little bell above the door ringing to announce another customer. Jessica glanced back, the other girls were already out of their aprons and were heading to kitchen to steal some freshly baked goods, courtesy of Taeyeon, dubbed master baker. “Hey wait!” She called out to them, slightly annoyed that she was being left behind…as usual.

Yoona turned back, a grin growing across her face. “You can do it!” She encouraged, holding up a fist for emphasis. “Hwaiting!”

Jessica’s eye twitched as she watched the younger girl disappear into the kitchen with a bounce in her step. Knowing that Taeyeon would kill her if she left her post, Jessica was forced to deal with the last customer before she could start her long needing break. “Welcome to Soshi’s Bakery, what can I get you today?” She greeted, forcing herself to sound cheerful despite her tiredness and hunger.

The man before her didn’t even look at her and instead his eyes were trained on the pastries behind the glass, a serious expression upon his face. His arms were crossed in front of him with one hand on his chin, his finger tapping patiently as he considered his options. Jessica on the other hand, who wanted nothing but to sit down and scoff down a giant chocolate muffin, was growing rather impatient. She cleared to get the man’s attention but if he heard her, he didn’t acknowledge it. Jessica rolled her eyes and leaned against the table, muttering quietly to herself. While the man was still at odds on what to get, Jessica eyed him frustratingly. “He must be gay.” She thought to herself, her finger drumming against the counter as she waited, eyeing the man to past the time. “No guy dresses that nicely.”

The man was tall and slim, his brown blondish hair was neatly done and his clothes were sharp and clean. His suit was crisp and unwrinkled, his shirt buttons were done all the way up and a tie was fitted snugly around his neck and tucked in underneath his suit jacket. His black shoes were shiny and clean, as if they came right out of the box, in fact, it looked like he stepped right out of a fashion magazine but at the moment that was the least of Jessica’s concerns. “Can I help you?” She repeated, her voice thick with annoyance, her patience finally running out.

Finally the man turned to her, a bright smile stretching across his face causing Jessica to falter. Finally face-to-face, Jessica could see that the man was not only well dressed like a model but he also had the face of one. His eyes were bright and his smile was warm. And he had perfect teeth. Seriously! Where did this guy come from? He had a slightly feminine look but he was handsome nonetheless.

Jessica squirmed in her spot. Her hair was done up in a messy bun, which was done half-unconsciously as she rushed out of her apartment to make it on time for work and she didn’t even want to think about her clothes. Her jeans had flour all over them as she usually wiped her hands against the sides of her legs and the apron was caked with pieces of raw dough and smeared icing.

The huge difference in appearance only made her angrier. “Who the hell shows up at a bakery in a suit and a tie?” She seethed silently. Maybe it was the lack of sleep, or lack of food that made her easily irritated and unfortunately she was taking it out on the well-dressed man. “Are you going to stand there all day or are you going to actually purchase something?” She sneered, brushing her hair from out of her eyes to properly glare at the customer.

The man looked taken aback for a second before he shook his head, his smile still present, if not brighter. Apparently her anger had no effect on the man. “I guess I’ll take an Americano and a plain scone.”

Jessica wanted to tear out her hair. “After all that…and this is what he orders?” She wasn’t saying that Soshi’s Bakery didn’t make good coffee or scones, in fact they were rather delicious but the thing that appeased the customers were the extravagant pastries that seemed to be made in and taste like heaven, or so that was what the reviews and critics had claimed. “Is that all?” She hissed, punching in the total, just wanting to deal with the customer and get it over with.

The man nodded and handed her a bill. She had all but shoved his order and his change into his hands, wanting to oh so badly go on her break. “Unnie! I’m here to cover your shift.” “Finally!” Jessica heaved out, quickly untying her apron and passing it to Seohyun.

As she did, she heard the sound of coins hitting the tip jar and she turned around in time to see the man flash her a smile before heading out the door with a coffee in one hand and a scone in the other, seemingly undeterred by her rude behavior. “I bet this is the last time he’s coming here. I hope Taengoo wouldn’t be too mad that I lost her a customer.”

But the next day, around the same time after the lunch rush, the man in the suit and tie returned with a smile on his face. “Americano and a plain scone.” He ordered again.

Once again Jessica took his order and he left but not before dropping a few change into the tip jar.

He showed up again the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that. Despite Jessica’s initial hostility the man in the suit and tie continued to return. He had become a regular and soon Jessica was used to his presence, something that she had looked forward to everyday. “He must work nearby since he shows up everyday and at the same time.” Jessica thought to herself as she prepared his Americano drink. “I wonder what he does. He’s always wearing a suit.” But she never dared ask him, only keeping to the script of “How can I help you?” and “Please come again”. She hadn’t gotten that used to him to try and start a conversation and thankfully he had kept by his lines too.

There was a few times after that did they actually steer from the script, but only slightly mind you. One day it had been pouring with rain and the man was leaving a puddle on the floor as he ran a hand through his messy hair in an attempt to comb it down. “Some weather we got.” He commented.

“Yeah, it’s pretty crazy out there.” She added before handing him his order. “Please come again.”

And they both knew that he would.

The man so far had shown up alone so when he returned the next day with another person, it had thrown her slightly off. “What can I get you two?” She asked, fulfilling their orders rather quickly.

“I told you Mr. Suit and Tie was gay.” Sunny stated as soon as the two left. Mr. Suit and Tie, the title of the unknown but well-dressed man that the girls at the bakery had coined him.

Before Jessica could say anything, Taeyeon passed by and lightly slapped Sunny’s leg. “Off the counter.” She ordered before disappearing behind the kitchen down.

Sunny’s face scrunched up before she leaped down from the counter. Sometimes she was such a kid. “I knew something was off about him. Besides his girly looks, he dresses sophisticatedly and he’s actually nice. Only gay people are good-looking and nice.”

While Jessica had thought the same thing she couldn’t help but want to defend Mr. Suit and Tie. “That could be his co-worker or something.”

Sunny shoved the half-eaten sandwich into Jessica’s face. “Or something.” Sunny repeated with her eyebrows raised. Jessica rolled her eyes, while turning away from Sunny, a part of her hoping that it wasn’t true.

The tradition of Mr. Suit and Tie continued across summer and into fall, sometimes bringing his friend but often coming alone. Winter was fast approaching and snow was coming down hard in Seoul but that didn’t stop Mr. Suit and Tie from coming to Soshi’s Bakery. Jessica was amused and pleased at his loyalty. What kept him from coming back? Surely the coffee and scone couldn’t be that amazing for him to risk the weather and walk all the way to the bakery in the freezing cold.

The bakery wasn’t as busy as before due to the weather but when the bell ringed at precisely two o’clock, Jessica glanced up to find Mr. Suit and Tie brushing off snow from his jacket. Even with the weather he still wore his signature outfit, as Jessica could see his black tie peeking from underneath his wool jacket and scarf. “Christmas is just around the corner.” He stated happily, shivering slightly as he reveled in the warmth of the bakery.

“Yup it is.” Jessica replied, her hands content on making his coffee just a bit slower than usual. “Any plans for the holiday?”

“Might go back home to visit my family. I haven’t visited them since I’ve moved to Seoul.”

Jessica was intrigued. She was actually having a decent conversation and she was learning something about him. “Oh. Where did you come from?”

The man took off his mitts, shoving them into his jacket pockets as he leaned casually against the counter, watching her hands skillfully make his drink. “San Francisco.”

Jessica paused in surprise. “No way!” She shook her head to recompose herself. “Really?” So am I.” She stated, placing the coffee onto the counter.

The man grinned. “What are the chances?” He said amusedly, his hands immediately wrapping around the cup in an attempt to steal its warmth and hopefully bring back the feeling in his fingers. “So what are your plans for Christmas?” He asked back.

Jessica leaned against the counter too, happy at their little conversation. She didn’t really interact with customers much but something about Mr. Suit and Tie made him more than just a regular customer. “I’ll probably be working for a little bit. The bakery is open for a few hours on Christmas for special orders.”

Mr. Suit and Tie shot her a sympathetic smile. “Well I hope you have a Merry Christmas…Jessica.” He said before making his way to the doors.

Jessica stood frozen against the counter and for some reason her heart was pounding in her ears. “Everything…okay?” Taeyeon asked worriedly as she came back from wiping down some tables, sensing that Jessica wasn’t acting like her usual self.

“He knows my name.” She muttered dazedly, loving the way her name sounded like a melody off his tongue.

“You do realize you’re wearing a name tag don’t you?” Yoona pointed out teasingly, immediately breaking Jessica out of her daze.

“Shut up!” Jessica retorted, her cheeks pink with embarrassment causing Yoona and Yuri to snickered in amusement as they were huddled in the corner, secretly nibbling on some cupcakes.

“Out you two!” Taeyeon shooed as she noticed the death glares Jessica was shooting to the two giggling girls. “And did you pay for those?” She shouted after them as they scurried off with their free food in hand. Taeyeon shook her head at them before moving to stand beside Jessica, her eyes observing her closely before letting out a sigh and resting a comforting hand on Jessica’s shoulder. “You’re not actually…in love with Mr. Suit and Tie are you?” She questioned curiously, concluding that it could only be him that was causing Jessica to act strangely.

“Of course not!” Jessica exclaimed, shaking her head at the silly thought.

Taeyeon’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, not quite believing. “Because you know…you barely know the guy. He could be some government spy or something with the way he dresses. You never know.”

Jessica wanted to laugh at the idea but instead she shook her head. “I’m not in love with him. I don’t even know his name so how could I be in love with someone I don’t even know?” She assured, trying to convince Taeyeon though it seemed like she was trying to convince herself.

Taeyeon may have been a slave driver with her strict work ethics and high expectations but she was also a friend who cared about Jessica’s and the other girl’s wellbeing. “Alright.” She said, leaving the subject alone for the time being. “I hope you know what you are doing. I don’t want to see you hurt.”

Jessica nodded. “Don’t worry. I’m a strong girl.”

While most people couldn’t wait for Christmas and was usually excited for the holiday, Jessica couldn’t help but dread the day. Not only did she had to work on the holiday but she was forced to work alone. The other girls were home with their families and Taeyeon, who was supposed to be there with her, had to catch an earlier flight to Jeju, leaving Jessica alone to tend the bakery. If she wasn’t so close to Taeyeon, she would’ve turned off the “open” sign and crawl back into her warm and comfortable bed back at home but instead she braved the cold and dragged herself to the bakery with sheer will alone.

Time went by rather slowly and the bakery was quite empty with exceptions to a few people walking in to pick up their cake before making their merrily way back to their family and friends. Jessica slumped against the corner, picking at her fingernails as she waited for the hand on the clock to reach two. It felt weird knowing that Mr. Suit and Tie wasn’t going to come since he had shown up everyday since his first time. Jessica let out a deep sigh, untying the back of her apron as the hands on the clock neared the time of closing.

She grabbed a broom and started to sweep the floor, intent on getting the place clean so she could hurry and head home. Just as the small hand hit two on the clock, the door opened with a ding. “Sorry.” Jessica apologized without looking up nor actually apologetic. “We’re closed now.”

“Oh good. You’re still here.”

Jessica’s head shot up as she whirled around, taken aback at the man standing at the door. “Mr. Suit and Tie!” She exclaimed in surprise, not realizing the words coming out of until it was too late. She instantly clamped her hands against . “Sorry, I didn’t mean—“ Jessica stuttered, flustered and thrown off by Mr. Suit and Tie’s surprise appearance.

Instead of being angry, Mr. Suit and Tie laughed at his nickname, his laughter was enough to stop the burning of Jessica’s cheeks. “Mr. Suit and Tie?” He repeated, eyebrows rose up in amusement.

Jessica bit her lip, scowling slightly. She didn’t like it when people laughed at her. Her eyes narrowed accusingly at him. “Mr. Suit and Tie.” She said, her hand motioning up and down at him. “Because you’re always wearing a suit and a tie.” She explained, rolling her eyes at the obviousness. “My friends are actually betting to see if you’re like some government agent or something.”

His eyebrows rose even further at the confession, his smile widening, trying his best to suppress the urge to laugh out right but he knew that he would only upset her more. “Is that so? Well sorry to disappoint. I’m no spy.” He stated teasingly, his eyes gleaming with silent laughter. “But I do work in an office building a little ways from here.”

Jessica huffed, brushing her hair from out of her eyes before turning around in an attempt to hide her embarrassment. “What are you doing here anyways?” She asked scornfully. “Shouldn’t you be on a plane to San Francisco by now?”

She heard Mr. Suit and Tie shuffle to a table, helping himself into a booth, his eyes trained on her back. “Flight got cancelled.” He replied and Jessica fidgeted, practically feeling his eyes burn against the back of her head.

“I meant why are you here.” Jessica said. “Here as in the bakery. We’re closed by the way.” She added for good measure.

Mr. Suit and Tie chuckled. “Well I thought about going home…” He professed. “But spending Christmas alone at home didn’t sound too fun and it felt weird not coming to the bakery so I thought I’d try my luck. And look! You’re still here, which makes it all the better!” He explained cheerfully. “Seeing you everyday was…a routine I guess. Seeing you…makes coming here worth it.”

Jessica’s heart pounded so hard she felt as if her eardrums would burst. She turned to face him, her eyes landing on his childish face. “You came here…to see me?” Jessica said in astonishment and disbelief. Her head was spinning at the confession and she didn’t what to say or how to react. Was he telling her the truth? Had he really come to see her? “Why?” She couldn’t help but ask.

Mr. Suit and Tie slightly turned away, his cheeks pinkening. “Would you believe me if I told you that I fell for you at first glance?”

Not only her head spinning but also now she was actually having difficulties breathing. Dazedly she took the seat in front of Mr. Suit and Tie, her eyes staring intently at his face. “You’re kidding.”

Mr. Suit and Tie shook his head, smiling happily at Jessica. “To tell you the truth, my friend heard about how popular this place was. I wanted to check it out but my lunch break doesn’t start until a little after one-thirty. It takes about a half hour to get here by bus also I have to walk some ways. At least by the time I get here the crowds are gone.” He pointed out cheekily. “First time I came here, it was the first time I’ve been to a bakery like this. I didn’t know what to get.” He laughed. “And than you show up!” His eyes gleamed as he remembered his first time coming to Soshi’s Bakery. “You weren’t in the greatest of moods.”

Jessica blushed at the memory, hoping that he had somehow forgotten about that minor detail. “I was having a bad morning.” She said in self-defense. “And I was hungry.” She added, hoping it will help her case. Everyone knew that when people were hungry they were intolerable and grumpy.

“Truthfully I thought that you didn’t really fit the whole bakery image.” Mr. Suit and Tie admitted. “The place was so warm and inviting…you on the other hand…” He cocked his head to the side, his smile turning into a smirk.

Jessica held up a threatening fist. “Shut up!”

But Mr. Suit and Tie didn’t.

“But you were cute.” He said and Jessica’s fist dropped back down to her side at the bold comment. Mr. Suit and Tie didn’t seem to notice her shocked state and instead he tilted his head, placing a finger as he recalled the memory. “You had brushed your hair away but I guess you didn’t realize that your hands were dirty. You had flour on your hands and you left mark right above your forehead.” Jessica sank in her chair, her level of embarrassment was at an all time high.

“You were so mad. I thought you were going to leap across the counter and strangle me with or shove a donut down my throat or something.” He mused to Jessica’s mortification. “But with the flour in your hair all I could think about was how pretty and innocent you looked. I remember you asking me to order something but my mind was so scrambled the only thing I could think of was an American and a plain scone.” He stated, laughing at his own blunder.

Jessica broke out into a grin at his story. “Really? That’s why you ordered something so simple? But why didn’t you change it the next time?”

Mr. Suit and Tie shrugged his shoulders sheepishly. “I guess I thought it was our thing and I didn’t wanted to change anything.”

This time Jessica laughed out loud. He was too cute and innocent. Even though she was embarrassed through most of the story she somehow felt happy and light, her heart fluttering inside her chest. “And why are you always tipping me? Not that I don’t appreciate it.”

Mr. Suit and Tie his lips, a habit of his that he did when nervous or embarrassed. “It was for you to like me more. I didn’t know what I did to make you mad to be honest but I knew that I didn’t want you hating me.”

“So you’re not…gay?”

Mr. Suit and Tie nearly choked on her question. “Gay? What made you think that?”

Jessica narrowed her eyes. “You sometimes came here with another guy. A well-dressed guy like you plus another man…what else was I supposed to think?”

Immediately he shook his head. “No, no. I’m not gay. That other man is my best friend. The one who actually recommended me this bakery. He’s more like a brother. We’re close but not that close.”

Jessica breathed out a sigh of relief. Wait til she told Sunny this…

“I’m Kevin by the way.”

Jessica stared dumbfounded. “What?”

He chuckled as he held out his hand. “My name is Kevin…but if you still want to call me Mr. Suit and Tie that’s fine too.” He said mockingly.

“No!” Jessica exclaimed rather loudly and she reddened at her outburst. She coughed into her hand to recompose herself. “I mean no…Kevin’s good. Kevin.” She repeated, testing out his name with a smile. “Kevin…I like that.” She reached out her hand to grasp his, not that surprised to know that his hands were soft and gentle.

They stared at each other before Jessica broke eye contact, her heart beating crazily against her chest, retreating her hand back down her side. “Well I’m not in the mood to spend Christmas alone. If you’re up to it, I can go get us some coffee and scones and we can stay here and just talk.”

Kevin smiled brightly, nodding his head. “I’d like that.”

Jessica stood up to go fetch some snacks. When she had returned she noticed that Kevin had shrugged off his jacket and had hung it on the back of his chair. She laughed, realizing that Mr. Suit and Tie was not wearing a suit and a tie but a warm sweater over a plain grey shirt. “Well I guess I won’t be calling him Mr. Suit and Tie any longer.” She thought humorously to herself. She approached the table, loving the way his eyes lit up at her appearance. She placed the tray of goods on the table with a grin. “I’m sorry to have to inform you that we have officially ran out of scones but I got us a cheesecake instead. I hope you don’t mind the change Kevin.” She joked.

Kevin returned her grin. “Nope not at all.” He said as he took a fork and plunged it into the cake before shoving the fork into his mouth. He chewed on it for a while, making strange faces, trying his best to imitate the look of a critic. Finally he swallowed, a serious face replacing his smile. “Not bad.” He said but unable to hold the stern look his face broke out into a smile once again.

“Funny.” Jessica said, rolling her eyes at him before capturing a piece of cake with her fork, content on how things ended up.

Working at the bakery didn’t seem too bad now. Instead she was actually glad that she took the chance. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have been able to meet Kevin and life without Kevin seemed weird.

“What are you thinking about?” Kevin asked, his eyebrows slightly furrowed with worry at the quietness.

Jessica smiled softly. “Nothing in particular.” She answered. “Just you.”

I hope you guys enjoyed my super long one-shot. I was inspired after hearing Kevin sing Suit and Tie and couldn't help but write about it. It's different than my other stories if you have read them, it's more fluff versus the usual arguing and fighting lol.

Also please give a round of applause to Woorikevsica09 who sacrificed some time to create the cute and amazing poster for me and had also supported me in uploading this one-shot. To Woorikevsica09- thank you so much!

I would love to hear what you guys have to say so please drop a comment! It would definitely make me happy to know that my efforts aren't wasted. Also I would like to know if you guys like it enough for me to write a sequel. I have a plot in mind that will offer a more concrete take on their relationship so I hope you guys will wait patiently.

Anyways, thank you for reading and supporting me like always!

(P.S. I love U-KISS' new album, CollageIf you haven't already check out their new song Standing StillI guarantee you that it's daebak! Please support and love the boys!)
