There was only one person he needed

He doesn't need anyone else

"Hello?"

"Earth to Myungsoo."

"Why doesn't he talk?"

"This is boring, let's go somewhere else." The boy shrugged and signaled for his friends to follow him. For the entire first month of school since this boy entered High School they've been trying to make him talk—even if it was just one word. They assumed he was mute and couldn't talk, or maybe deaf, but he never paid attention to him long enough to notice or care.

L looked up once they were gone and muttered, "My name is L." This group kept bothering him and he really didn't know why. Was it because he stood out because of his muteness? It wasn't like he was actually mute, he just didn't need friends at school.

He had a friend, a best friend actually and that was all that he needed.

L could remember the first day his best friend came into his life and imprinted on him after only a minute of knowing him.

"Hi! My name is Lee Sungyeol and I'm unsure of if I'm dead or in a coma, will you help me?"

Most people would find it extremely scary when a boy flies through their windows and randomly introduces themselves and asks for help, but L just thought it was cute.

And agreed.

"My name is Myungsoo, but I want to be referred to as L, okay?"

The whole point of Sungyeol was he really didn't know if he was dead or not and from the looks of him he was only a year older than L so either time stopped for the ghost boy, or he recently got caught in an accident that could be the reason for his sudden appearance. L looked up a ton of different books about mysteries and even things about death to see if he could pick up any leads. However, as the days went by he started to care less and less about discovering the truth.

And more about discovering who Sungyeol was as a person.

"I really didn't have much friends, but I'm happy I got to meet you. Once I'm out of this coma, hopefully, I'll be able to talk to you."

It didn't take long for L to fall for this best friend of his.

"I don't have any friends so let's promise to be friends when you wake up."

L wanted to believe that Sungyeol was in a coma and not dead. He wanted to believe that he was going to be best friends with this boy once he woke up and maybe eventually be more. He couldn't imagine a better world without Sungyeol being right by his side. As either a friend or boyfriend.

*****

"Lately you've been not researching as much as you had when I first came here."

L was back in his room after school and just threw his stuff on the ground so that his attention could be completely on his best friend. Sungyeol was a strange one, only L could see him or talk to him while also being able to physically touch him. This gave him hope that Sungyeol really was in a coma and truly alive somewhere in the world—most likely South Korea given that he spoke and looked Korean.

The only thing about touching him was that he felt cold.

And lifeless.

"I've been busy recently, that's all."

L bluntly lied and looked away from the pouting Sungyeol. He didn't want to tell the ghost that he didn't want to discover if he was really alive or dead. He just wanted to stay like this forever. Sungyeol only pouted for a bit more before lightening up about the topic and switching to something else.

"Well how was school today?"

It was L's turn to pout towards Sungyeol and wish that he chose a better topic to talk about. He didn't want to tell his best friend about his boring life at school where he didn't talk and only focused on the school aspect of it.

"Sungjong and his friends tried to talk to me again."

He still didn't see why they were so persistent on making him talk. He only needed one best friend, and it was currently Lee Sungyeol.

"Are you going to talk to them?"

Sungyeol almost looked concerned until L shook his head violently; Sungyeol's face seemed relieved by the motion and decided to not deal with this certain topic anymore.

*****

"Hello?"

"Will you ever talk?"

"Please, we don't want to be mean to you." Sungjong shook L this time and waved his hand in front of him a few times before finally giving up and turning to his friends.

"You think he'll ever talk?" Another boy asked, his name being Woohyun. Sungjong shrugged once more and left with the group.

Once they were gone L just sighed out in relief and was glad that they were away from him. "Will they ever stop annoying me?"

He didn't need to repeat to anyone that he didn't need friends. He didn't need to tell people that he only had a small space for one person in his heart.

He only needed Lee Sungyeol.

No one else.

*****

"Have you found anything out recently?"

Sungyeol was casually sitting on L's bed and spoke as he swung his legs back and forth out of boredom.

"I checked some schools around here but no one knows about you."

Sungyeol frowned and crossed his arms, but continued to swing his legs.

"Search harder."

But all L could think was, "But then you would have to leave me."

He was afraid of finding out the truth so much that he would purposely not check around and just claim that he didn't know anything every time Sungyeol asked just so the older boy would be semi-happy with his responses.

"Okay."

L just wanted to be with Sungyeol forever. He didn't want his best friend to leave. He loved him and didn't want to let him go.

*****

"Honey I'm going to be late tonight so can you make something yourself for dinner?"

L looked up at his mother while sitting down on the couch and nodded. He had to leave for school soon and he didn't mind being home alone with Sungyeol one bit. His mother worked as a nurse in the town close to their own, and his dad—well his dad wasn't there.

"Be safe, okay?"

She closed the door after that and L knew he had to get ready for school and stood up. Sungyeol was still asleep on his bed and L had to wonder how a ghost could sleep as much as Sungyeol, but he liked to think of Sungyeol not as a ghost but just a person no one else could see.

He quickly packed up his things and left the house walking the short distance to get to his small High School. He already knew Sungjong was going to bother him at lunch today like he normally did so he just braced himself for it and knew not talking was the best option.

And he guessed right when Sungjong showed up right at L's empty lunch table and waved a hand in front of him.

"You okay?"

He waved his hand some more as Woohyun and the other friends showed up after they finished their meals. L wondered vaguely if they found it fun to make fun of him, or if they'd get bored soon enough.

"Hello?"

This time it was Sunggyu looking at him with concerned eyes and bending to look into L's emotionless eyes.

L just blinked and lowered his eyes.

Sunggyu took this as a small sign and waved the rest of the group away so that he was the only one near L.

"Dude, I know High School is tough, but we want to help you."

"How can you help me?" L glanced up to look in Sunggyu's concerned eyes and winced. Bad idea. "I don't need your help."

Sunggyu took a step back after finally hearing L's voice and looked ecstatic at the improvement that L just considered funny on his part. Sunggyu was in a whole different grade from L and Sungjong and yet he acted like he belonged in their grade.

"We just want to be your friend."

Sunggyu tried from a different angle and tried to reason with the boy they all thought was mute.

"I only have one friend."

L didn't want to talk to him, but maybe telling him that he didn't want friends would help him in making them leave him alone.

"Which is?"

"Lee Sungyeol."

Pain crossed Sunggyu's face and he looked away from L and just walked away. He didn't say anything else and soon after that lunch ended.

Curiosity started to form in L's mind from Sunggyu's reaction and he didn't know if he wanted to ask Sunggyu about it or leave it alone.

And that bugged him even more.

*****

"Do you remember anything from when you weren't well, a ghost."

All L could see was Sunggyu's pained face when mentioning Sungyeol's name, but he didn't know why the boy would do that.

Unless he knew about him.

"Nope, not that much besides some likes and dislikes as well as my name. Why do you ask?"

L shrugged the question off and went back to his homework. He really didn't want to bring up the topic of Sungyeol's past life if he didn't remember it. Sungyeol pouted at him for doing that but gave up once L showed that he was not going to speak any more about this topic.

In the back of L's mind he knew he would have to talk to Sunggyu about this whole thing, but he really didn't want to know the truth.

The truth could make or break him.

*****

"Hello?"

Sungjong and his group were here again, but things were going to be different this time.

"Sunggyu come here I need to talk to you."

Sunggyu took a step back out of surprise but even he knew why L wanted to talk to him. He knew he would have to ask L about Sungyeol; both needed answers.

Sunggyu finally nodded and signaled for L to follow him away from the group; the only one who looked completely surprised was Sungjong himself. The look in his eyes showed a different kind of emotion that the rest of the group didn't understand—it was one of sadness.

It didn't take long for Sunggyu to find an empty spot for him and L and sat down waiting for L to do the same. When L finally did Sunggyu turned to him and gave him his full attention.

"I want to know more about Lee Sungyeol. Do you know him? Do you just know the name?"

L didn't waste any time in getting straight to what he wanted to talk about. He wanted to know now that he was in this situation and Sunggyu was the only person who seemed to know about this.

"I want to know how you know his name first."

Sunggyu casted his eyes downward and waited for L to speak again.

"I-I can't explain that until you tell me about him first."

He knew L was going to respond like that but he still hoped to get something out of the younger boy. How could this first year high schooler know about Lee Sungyeol?

"He was in the grade below mine last year; he used to hang around with Dongwoo, Woohyun, Hoya and I. I don't know how you know his name, but he got into a coma during the summer. He would be in his second year of high school since I'm in my third, but he is still fast asleep in the hospital just a town away from here. They said the equipment wasn't good here and they wanted to send him to a better hospital."

If L wasn't listening intently to what Sunggyu was saying he would have surely missed out on some details because he spoke in barely above a whisper.

"So he is alive, but barely holding on…"

"How do you know him? He didn't know anyone from middle school, he didn't talk about a Kim Myungsoo, or L to any one of us."

Sunggyu looked frustrated now and spoke a bit louder. L could tell it was hard for him to talk about a dear friend who wasn't with them right now, but he didn't know how he was going to explain that Sungyeol was safely at his house and currently transparent to everyone but him.

"I-well, uh."

L twiddled his fingers a bit and bit his lip nervously. He didn't talk much in school so really this felt weird to him and way too new.

"He came to me one day with barely any memories, and well is transparent to everyone but me."

Now L's voice was barely a whisper and he bit his lip some more when all he was met with was silence.

"C-Can I talk to him?"

L didn't realize he was staring at the ground until Sunggyu said that and he looked up at the older boy's face. He could see that Sunggyu was really trying to believe him; L nodded.

"After school, come with me."

*****

"Oh you're home! I missed you so much!"

Once the front door was swung open Sungyeol was on the couch and turned to greet L as happily as he could since he could get pretty bored in an empty house during the day.

But today he was with someone else—someone who looked very familiar.

Sunggyu looked around the empty house, straight past Sungyeol and looked back at L.

"Is he in the room?"

L nodded.

"Hey, uh, you might not remember me, but I'm Lee Sunggyu, one of your old best friends."

Sungyeol looked completely shocked at this turn of events and ran to be beside L.

"What is he talking about?"

Sungyeol would have said more but L rose his finger and silenced the slightly older boy. He knew Sunggyu wanted to speak his mind, and he knew it was the right thing.

"You're in a coma in the next town, I know because I saw you the day you entered and I've checked up on you since then. You're doing just fine and here I found that your friend L said that you practically live here now. I just want you to know that your friends miss you and wish for you to get well every day."

Sunggyu finally stopped and looked at L and nodded to him.

"Sungyeol, I know you don't remember anything, but he is telling the truth. I finally found where you are and who you are. You belonged to this town all along."

L was in near tears by the time he finished speaking and turned to hug Sungyeol who in turn hugged him back. He just wanted to be with him for real. He wanted Sungyeol to be better so he could finally be with his best friend.

Sungyeol was at a loss of words after this and just nodded to L. He looked at Sunggyu and smiled sadly, only wishing that he knew who this person was and all the memories that came with him. He wanted to wake up from his coma fast so he could remember everyone again.

*****

After a little more researching L found out that the hospital Sungyeol was at was the same hospital that his mother worked at as a nurse and she often saw him in his bed fast asleep. She said he would usually have a smile on his face in the late afternoon but always frowning at night or in the early morning. L didn't know what to do with this information besides the initial idea of going to see him in the hospital for more clues; but he was scared.

He didn't want to see Sungyeol fast asleep when he could easily just see him in his room smiling like he normally did when he saw L walk through the room.

But he knew he would have to go see him. He knew it was the only way to really confirm that it was truly Sungyeol there and that he was truly alive.

He didn't tell Sungyeol he was going there and went after school, not even telling Sunggyu or his own mother.

He just needed to go. He needed to find out.

He arrived by bus at the hospital an hour and a half after school and walked up to the front desk asking where his room was and was escorted to the room while being asked if he was a friend from school. L just nodded and walked into the room where he saw the sleeping boy.

Lee Sungyeol.

Something changed in him right there. Something triggered and he just started crying, crying so hard that he ended up fainting in front of the peacefully sleeping body.

When he woke up he was back in his room. It felt empty, but soothing. He didn't know why but something felt missing.

He felt like it was too quiet, but he just shrugged and went right back to sleep with the only thought that school was the next day and he had to be ready for it.

*****

Several months passed after that. Something changed in him after going to the hospital. He didn't remember why he went but he just shrugged it off saying he must have went to see his mother at work and went right back to his normal day life. Through this he became friends with Sungjong and the rest of the members of the group—but the 'leader' of the group Lee Sunggyu always seemed distant from him like he knew something L didn't know.

But once more he would just shrug it off and go back to living normally. He didn't know why it took him this long to be friends with Sungjong because really he was a great guy to be around and L ended up with a small crush for him.

After a little longer he found out Sungjong had a crush on him too and they ended up going out and going on dates every other weekend. To this Sunggyu was even more distant but he still didn't say much and kept to himself, L would just continue to shrug off his weird behavior and wonder why Sunggyu would go to the hospital as much as he did.

Regardless he was happy with Sungjong and his whole first year of high school went perfectly. Sunggyu and Dongwoo graduated without much troubles leaving the group to decrease in size, but Hoya and Woohyun still stuck around even though they weren't too hard about being left behind by the others.

The summer didn't last as long as they wanted and soon enough they were second year students and still hung around with the entire group after school when Sunggyu and Dongwoo didn't have college work to complete.

Then someone new joined the group or at least new to Sungjong and L. Woohyun and Hoya seemed ecstatic to see this person again and after L saw him he looked familiar but nothing rang a bell about him. His name was Lee Sungyeol and he was a second year student who was supposed to be a third year student. Hoya and Woohyun said he had gotten in a pretty bad crash with Sunggyu and Dongwoo back when they were younger and he was in a coma since then.

"A coma?" Sungjong looked completely interested in knowing more about this mysterious guy, but L could not care less. He just wanted to get through high school happily with Sungjong and be happy with him in college as well.

But the looks he would get from Sungyeol in class would kill him almost every time. It looked like he held something in his heart that L either didn't have or couldn't remember having.

Regardless he still kept his distance from Sungyeol and spent most of his time with Sungjong trying to make the best out of his high school experience.

He didn't want someone to get in the way of his happiness, but by the third year when Woohyun and Hoya left L couldn't help but continue to stare at Sungyeol in class.

Sungjong took different classes and ended up in different areas of the school which gave Sungyeol more time with L and tried his hardest to get closer to L.

He knew something that L did not know, and it was starting to bother him.

A bit too much.

"What is your problem?" L finally asked after an hour of studying. Sungyeol was currently over at L's house claiming he needed help with a project that was due the next week of classes. L said he would help him but slowly as the hour went by Sungyeol just stared blankly at the walls and smiled sadly at L.

"I just missed this place that's all." Sungyeol looked around some more and noticed some changes to them room that must have happened while he was away. He kept all of his memories from when he was in the coma and even got back his old ones as well, but L obviously didn't remember a single moment they held together.

"You've been here before?" L questioned him and stared at the boy in front of him. He did look way too familiar for his likings and tried not to think about it since he's met him but it was hard to push the thought away.

"I used to live here not too long ago." Sungyeol chuckled and leaned back and looked up at the ceiling. "All of those fond memories here and I couldn't even tell you the one thing that I've felt for so long."

L was starting to get worried from his behavior now and laughed nervously. "What do you mean?"

"I love you."

"Wait, what?!" L lost his composure and looked directly at the older boy. How could he not only know L from before but spent enough time in this room for him to fall in love?

"You helped me through so much and I know you loved me too, but you just didn't want to ruin anything." Sungyeol went back to smiling sadly and glanced around the room, recalling all of his favorite memories in his head.

"I just wanted to tell you that before I have to step out of your life."

L was at a loss of words. He didn't know what to say or what to do, but memories started to flash through his head. Memories in this room with this same boy in front of him; he didn't know if they were real or just something his mind wanted to make up, but they felt real.

"I loved you?"

Sungyeol just nodded.

"And we knew each other before we were introduced last year?"

Sungyeol nodded again.

The memories couldn't stop now as they continued to flood his mind. Through all of this L just stood up and walked to sit beside Sungyeol. The boy who was currently invading all of his thoughts. Not his boyfriend, not his friends, just Sungyeol.

"I love you." Sungyeol said once more and turned to face L. He knew it was a longshot to make L remember in this way but he leaned forward whiling slowly closing his eyes. This was his last chance, if this didn't work he would give up, but he was going to give it his all.

L let him lean closer and closer and closed his eyes as well. He knew he had a boyfriend and he knew this was wrong, but he had to know. He had to know the taste of the lips that were about to be placed over his own.

And when they did the memories finally set in and he knew who Lee Sungyeol was.

He was all he ever needed.

And he will continue to be all he will ever need.

*****

It was the next day that L had to tell Sungjong the horrible news. I didn't want to cheat on his boyfriend but it was like Sungjong knew this was bound to happen and was okay with it. He was just glad that L told him instead of keeping it a secret. L could finally be with Sungyeol, even if it took him this long before they got together.

It just gave him a chance to fall in love with Lee Sungyeol all over again.
