There is little that Myungsoo remembers about the short time he had his mother. And even less memories with both his mother and Hoya, the two people he loves most in the world. The memory that happened to stick with him always and never seemed to fade from his mind was one of his mother sniffing away her tears and hoisting Myungsoo into her lap, holding him close and warm with Hoya tucked beside her. She gingerly wiped around the bruise under her eye and told them, "Sometimes you cry for no reason and laughing makes you sad. Sometimes your soulmate is mean to you. Sometimes life isn't fair."

He remembered vividly Hoya's quiet, sunny rebuff, "Life will be fair to us. Because me and Myungsoo are a team."

His mother laughed at that, and cried no more.

Myungsoo remembers less of the afterwards, about tugging Hoya’s sleeve as they walked to the corner store with the change for ice cream his mother had given them. He can barely recall asking Hoya "What's a soulmate?"

He can't remember Hoya hmm'ing and finally deciding, "That’s what you call the person you were made to marry. I think."

"I don't think I want to marry anybody."

"Well they probably don't want to marry you either."

"Does that mean I don't have a soulmate?"

"Of course you do. I don't think you get a choice." he doesn't remember Hoya’s pause, "I think god ties red string around your ankles to make sure."

"Nuh-uh!" Myungsoo doesn't recall saying. He doesn't remember the way he'd pulled up his pants leg and checked his ankle thoroughly.

Myungsoo doesn't remember any talk about soulmates. But he knows they mean everything to Hoya.
