Once again Soo Yun found herself sitting in the same Chinese restaurant that she has been going to since she was little. She had been a quiet girl when she was young and still she hasn’t quite blossomed yet. She blew her fringe out of her vision as she mulled over her life so far.

When thinking over it all she really felt sad. She couldn’t help, but think, “I wish I had done so much more in my life.” She let out a deep sigh, letting out the pressure in her chest.

Soo Yun was unaware of it at the moment, but from across the restaurant the same daughter and wife who had been watching over her since she was little were now studying her actions.

Eunkyung shook her head in dismay at the pitiful picture that was displayed in front of her. “Umma, I feel really bad for my dongsaeng. It seems as though over the years she hasn’t developed at all.” Eunkyung’s umma Sulmi frowned as well.

It was undeniable how lonely Soo Yun looked. She wished deep in her heart there was something she could do for her, just to give her a little push in the right direction. Sulmi thought of Soo Yun as another one of her daughters and she wanted to help her just as any other mother would want to help their child.

“But what can I do?” She thought silently to herself.

Suddenly one of the waitresses walked by with a check and a couple of fortune cookies. An imaginary light bulb flashed on above her head at that moment. Sulmi turned to her frustrated looking daughter. “Eunkyung-ah let’s give her a fortune cookie!” Eunkyung stared oddly at her mother.

“What are you talking about umma? We give all our customers fortune cookies.” Just as those words left it suddenly occurred to her what her mother meant. Her eyes turned into saucers. “You are not thinking what I think you’re thinking.” Sulmi only smiled then went to the back of the kitchen, just to come back seconds later with a fortune cookie in her palm.

Eunkyung tried to stop her crazy umma, but there was no stopping her. This woman was on a mission.

Sulmi stepped over to the thoughtful looking Soo Yun. In reaction to Sulmi’s footsteps Soo Yun looked up to smile at Sulmi. She politely bowed. “Annyeonghaseyo Eunkyung’s umma.” Sulmi pouted. “How many times do I have to tell you to just call me Sulmi.” Sulmi lightly jabbed Soo Yun’s shoulder.

Soo Yun smiled, feeling grateful for Sulmi’s presence. “Mianhae, I mean Sulmi. I guess I’ll get going right after I pay the check.” Sulmi slapped her hand away from grabbing the check. “Oh don’t worry about that just take your fortune cookie.” She shoved the fortune cookie into Soo Yun’s hands then joyfully walked away.

A very doubtful Eunkyung only watched from afar. “What has umma done this time?” She thought.

Soo Yun smiled and bowed once again to Sulmi. “Kamsahmnida Sulmi, I’ll be on my way then.” She stood up from the table gathering her school books and backpack then stepped out.

Once outside the restaurant she opened the fortune cookie and ate it while reading her fortune.

“Love is right around the corner.” It read.

Soo Yun only chuckled, shoving the small paper in her pocket. She thought to herself, “Man I have to tell Sulmi to stop making these fortunes so cheesy.” She completely blew it off.

If only she had known just how literal that fortune would turn out to be.
