Foreword
Two hours more to go. She thought as she looked at her watch after opening her eyes in the laziest way possible.
She looked at the window and noticed that it was eight in the evening—they were still on air.
Though a native of Seoul, Lee Chaerin couldn’t help but be nervous. It has been four years since she last step the lands of her hometown. A lot of things had change with her. Her hair for example is no longer in its chestnut beauty; it now shone a brilliant blonde. She was smarter too—no longer the young fresh 20-year old College graduate that she was.
She was no longer single too.
Her body was quite numb due to the long travel but she did her best to slow her stretch as the child who was leaning to her was still deep with sleep.
She smiled at the kid as she pulled him closer to her and fixed the comforter around his body.
“Omo—Chaerin-ah?” She looked at their left and saw a familiar face. The woman had grown quite older for Chaerin, yet she recognized her right away. Almost four years in LA won’t make her forget the ten years of close almost-mother-and-child-friendship they had before.
“Mrs. Kwon,” Chaerin smiled, “how have you been?”
“Small pains here and there but I am in good health.” The older one smiled. “Symptoms of aging, I guess—the small pains, I mean.” Chaerin just grinned and remembered how the lady took care of her before. “Then you shouldn’t be travelling the long trips, Mrs. Kwon. You should just relax back at home.” She advised.
“Aigoo,” the woman complained, “I rarely do Chae-ah, but a friend of mine celebrated their golden anniversary—I just couldn’t resist the invitation.”
Chaerin just nodded and asked, “Why is Mr. Kwon not with you?” And though she didn’t ask openly she thought, Why is he not with you?
“Mr. Kwon is too busy to be with me,” She laughed and noticed that the twinkle that she had witnessed before when the woman in front of her smiled and laughed with her husband was still there. Chaerin couldn’t help but wish that her life would be like that too; the twinkle of love never leaving her eyes forever.
Chaerin just looked down and then she felt movement, her young one was cuddling to her—looking for her warmth.
“Mama~” she hear him call out in a slight whisper. She smiled and wrapped an arm around him, “I’m here, baby, go back to sleep.”
The boys’ eyes were still closed when he answered, “Nyongie will be cold…”
“Nyongel is well with the stewardess’, honey.” She whispered sweetly, unaware of the look that Mrs. Kwon is giving her. “I love you, Mama.” The boy whispered and hugged Chaerin with his small arm.
“I love you too, baby.” She patted her sons’ extended arm on her tummy. “So much.”
She patted her son to sleep, only then did she remember her companion. “When did you marry Chae-ah?” Mrs. Kwon asked. Chaerin just gave an awkward laugh and that was enough for the older female to keep her other thoughts to herself.
“He’s a lovely child.” Chaerin smiled at the compliment. “Though I wonder why he looks so much like Jiyong.”
