This is an AU set during Baigais Gads, somewhere between Vidzeme and Latgale, north of the Daugava River in Latvia.  Originally based on the song "The Hazards of Love" by The Decemberists, it morphed itself into Latvian imagery.  Anyway, no names are mentioned, just... yeah.  I'm vague like that.  Sorry.  Oh, and I drew the picture first, then wrote the story.  The foreward is part of a poem I wrote in 2009 called "pīpene pavasarī."  Forgive my abuse of the Latvian language; I'm really not good at it.
