Chapter One

smile

A petite girl in her black sleeveless tank top underneath an oversized sweater with white skinny pants and a pair of ballet flats with chest length espresso colored tresses she tied into two fishtail braids pushes a door to a chic, modern-looking cafe and enters with a bright smile plastered on her face.

There was a boy in his teen years wiping the tables, another guy behind the counter arranging the displays on the counter, a woman, older than Sangmi exits from the kitchen bringing a vase of flowers she displays carefully on one of the display tables and two other persons in the kitchen, one standing in front of the oven, waiting for the cake to bake, the other, adding chocolate frosting to the newly-baked cake; they were all preparing for the cafe's opening that day.

"Annyeong, everyone! Good morning!" she greets the people inside. As calm and as stoic-looking as the cafe may seem when they open, no one really knows the riot they face every morning during prep. time; and Sangmi loved the riot.

The woman named Baehyun approaches Sangmi. "Oh, Sangmi-yah! Change to your uniform already! It's almost 9 A.M. Go, go, go!" she commanded with a panic-y tone.

"Neh, unnie," she uttered. She quickly bowed and headed to their locker area which was located in the back of the cafe and quickly changed into her uniform.

"SANGMI-AH, ARE YOU DONE YET?" the same voice which scolded her earlier called out.

After tying her hair into a messy bun, she heads back out to the counter which was where her Baehyun-unnie was standing, anxiously waiting for her with her left foot constantly tapping on the floor.

"What is it, unnie?" she asked, panting and gasping for air.

Before answering her, Baehyun swiveled side to side to search for a certain person and then looked back at Sangmi. "Yah, your friend is late. Call her immediately or she would get fired."

Sangmi widened her eyes, "MWO?! Are you serious?! Unnie, don't you think that's too much?"

"Yeah, I think so too. Don't fire her, Baehyun-noona," a voice coming from a person who just entered the cafe wearing a black button-down shirt and a pair of black pants with a black tie and black low sneakers and a messenger bang slinging across his chest. It was Kang Minhee, owner and manager of the cafe.

Baehyun furrowed her eyebrows. "But manager, it's the second time this week that girl has been late!" she reasoned.

"I know, but just give the girl another chance, arasso?" he coolly replied as he got nearer to the two.

"Yeah, yeah!" Sangmi nodded repeatedly, agreeing to her boss's decision.

"Besides—" Minhee starts, putting an arm around Sangmi and ruffling her hair. "—Sangmi over here won't have a friend to gossip with during work hours."

"Yah! What's that supposed to mean?! I do not gossip!" she quickly defended, jerking Minhee's arm off of her.

"Yeah, you do!" Minhee argued.

"No, I don't!"

"Yeah, you—"

"Aish, these kids. Stop bickering! We're about to open!" Baehyun scolded, heading back to the kitchen leaving both Sangmi and Minhee quietly snickering. "SANGMI-AH! COME HERE!" Baehyun called out from the kitchen.

"Back to work then, Minhee-oppa," Sangmi stated as she follows Baehyun to the kitchen.

Although Minhee owned the place, Baehyun was more of the boss. Maybe it was because she was the eldest of the employees, or the fact that she was just plain bossy. Minhee, on the other hand, was different. He was nice. He treated everyone like family, except for Sangmi. He treated her like his best friend but he never could see her as a sister.

He has noticed a change in her. She's been smiling more often and there are times when she would just space out with a goofy smile on before Baehyun would snap her out of it and scold her. It all began that day when he asked her to pick him up at the airport.

What happened that day? he asks himself.

All he knew was it was the same day that those famous boys from Super Junior came back from their concert somewhere. Maybe she saw them? he thought, then shrugged. He shook those thoughts off and went to one of the tables and sat down.

The clock had struck 9 P.M. and it was finally closing time for The Liquid Bistro. Strange name, huh? Only Kang Minhee would be crazy enough to could come up with such name.

"Sangmi-yah! Sangmi-yah!" a girl who was already changed out of her uniform, ran up to a busy Sangmi; wiping the tables and gathering empty coffee mugs and plates.

"What is it, Kyung-ah?" Sangmi asked, still focused on wiping the table.

"Aish. Look at me for a second!" the girl commanded.

Sangmi rolled her eyes then looked at her with an irritated face. "What is it?!"

"Aish, don't look at me like that!" the girl complained. "Anyways, the rest of us are going clubbing tonight! Wanna join?" she offered with an eager expression.

Sangmi quickly shook her head a 'no.'

"Why nooooot?!" the girl whined.

"Yookyung-ah, you know I don't go clubbing." Sangmi stoically stated before bringing her tray with used utensils and heading over to the kitchen with Yookyung in tow, still persisting for her to go.

"Yookyung-ah, no means no. Arasso?" Sangmi firmly stated. She was getting irritated of the girl whose job she and Minhee saved.

"But if you don't come, I'll be the only girl and I don't wanna feel left out!" Yookyung argued.

"Isn't Baehyun-unnie tagging along too?" Sangmi responds as they head towards the lockers for Sangmi to change into her casual attire.

"Aish! She is, but she's... an old hag. You know that! She tried firing me earlier!" Yookyung retorts in a form of a whisper to Sangmi, afraid that Baehyun would hear them.

Sangmi couldn't help but laugh. "Aigoo, Yookyung-ah. She's only 25! And I'm still not coming."

"Ugh, fine." Yookyung gave out and stomped her way out of the locker.

Aish, this girl can be a pain, sometimes.Sangmi thought to herself as she untied her hair.

"Last chance, Mimi-noona." another employee by the name of Heekyung quietly says, still convincing Sangmi to come, but Sangmi was determined not to.

She shook her head. "No thanks. Just go enjoy yourselves, arasso?" she replies and she heads over to the door. "Goodnight, everyone!" And after that, she bids them goodbye and exits the cafe.

Sangmi made it a habit to walk home every night since her house is just a few blocks away. It was a way for her to think about things that would just randomly enter her brain. Recently, her brain has been flocked with thoughts of Donghae and that smile.

She admits it, she's an ELF. The long-lost Kibum has always been her bias, but of course, she loves all 15 of the boys equally. She had seen them a few times at concerts and events, but she had never had a small, intimate interaction like the one she had with Donghae. It just made her so happy and giggly and before she knew it, she was smiling like an idiot as she advances on the busy streets of Seoul.

Suddenly, her phone vibrates from inside her pocket, interrupting her small trance. As she gets and answers her phone, she notices the person on the other end is panting furiously. She couldn't help but feel nervous as she answered the call.

"Mrs. Sung, you—"

The latter couldn’t let her finish. "Sangmi, you’re father… he-he-he collapsed… in the hospital now! Hurry!"

"What?! Okay. I’m off to the hospital!" Before saying another word, Sangmi hung up and since Asan Medical Center was the hospital nearest to their apartment, she knew her father, whatever happened to him, was there; she hails a taxi and she heads to Asan Medical Center.

'Appa, I hope you're alright.'
