Time Machine

Sibling Rivalry

Yoona was looking through Seohyun’s music sheets, looking for a song that wouldn’t be too hard to play. Too bad that Seohyun, being her perfectionist self, was also a talented musician. All her songs were extremely hard. She was about to give up when she found one that didn’t have so many scales and that actually looked fairly easy to play. The words Time Machine in Seohyun’s clear handwriting entitled the stave. She took the sheet of paper out of the folder and decided that was the song she was going to use for her master plan. She was about to start playing it on her keyboard when her phone vibrated. She groaned in protest but scolded herself afterwards when she saw it was Tiffany who was calling.

“Hey, Fany-ah” She said, acting casual, but there was still some shakiness in her voice. Keeping secrets from Tiffany was exhausting.

“Hi, Yoongie!” Yoona flinched at how excited Tiffany seemed to be. “Are you busy right now?” The doe-eyed girl felt like climbing up the walls in exasperation. It was the first time she had gotten to be home alone and she knew her time was limited and that she needed to make the most out of it. Chansung, as expected, was with Seohyun. This time, though, Yoona was thankful for it. She needed to work on the song as soon as possible.

“I am, actually. I’m studying for my World History test, and after that, I have two essays to write.” She lied, and she was as sure as she could be that Tiffany pouted at her response. It just made her feel worse. She knew how much Tiffany wanted to spend time with her, but she couldn’t help but put Seohyun first.

“Aw, jinjja? I went to the contest’s webpage and I wanted to tell you all about it.” Yoona lowered her head, ashamed of what she was doing to the American girl. She thought only people like Chansung could lie and disappoint others this way, and reality truly hit her when she realized she was acting just like her older brother would.

“I’m sorry, Fany… I want to hear it all, I really do…” Yoona bit the inside of her cheek, thinking of a way to make it up to Tiffany. She couldn’t lie to her again, telling her she’d call her at night, because if things went as planned, she’d execute her master plan later that night, but if she kept wasting time like this, she’d never be able to do it.

All contestants have to go tomorrow night to Seoul’s Institute of Arts. I’d love it if you could go with me.” Tiffany said, though Yoona could perceive she was almost begging. Yoona felt guilty because, after all, she had promised to stay by Tiffany all through it.

“Of course I’ll go, Fany. Can we talk tomorrow?” She hurried, though talked sweetly at first, reassuring Tiffany.

Sure, Yoong. I love you…” Tiffany trailed off, waiting to see if she could get the much awaited response from her beloved one.

“I know you do, Fany.” Yoona whispered and then hung up. She had been close to saying it back a couple of times now, but she would bite her tongue to keep herself from doing so. She brought her mind to the task at hand; playing Time Machine. Though she didn’t own a big piano like the one Seohyun played, her keyboard was just fine. The song turned out to be a little harder than she had thought, especially since she didn’t exactly know how it went; she just prayed that she was doing a good job. She tried to keep her cool even though continuously making mistakes was taking a toll on her. This is all for you, Seohyun.

After almost two hours of working nonstop on the song, Yoona learned the notes and the song started to come out naturally, not forced. Yoona was both surprised and relieved with the outcome. She was about to play the song one more time until she heard the door being opened. Yoona cursed silently, knowing who it was. She checked the time; 4:45 p.m., which meant she had around three hours to get Chansung out of the house for enough time. She had to act wisely. She went downstairs quickly to find her brother. There was still some awkwardness between the two ever since their fight.

“Was that you playing, Yoona?” He asked, with a light smile. When they were little, Yoona had taught him to play the guitar, even though Chansung wasn’t exactly interested in music. Yoona nodded tightly, without saying a word.

“Yeah, it was me. How did I sound?” She asked, running a hand through her hair.

“It was really good, actually. It could be heard all the way from the corner.” He said. Although she felt a jolt of confidence, Yoona flinched, thinking that Seohyun might have heard and that her surprise would be spoiled.

“Thanks. Is Seohyun going to be home? I need to ask her for our Pre-cal homework.” She acted as cool as she could, but her nervousness was betraying her. Chansung nodded absentmindedly.

“I think she is. She’s been acting weird since our sleepover… Yoona, did you say something to her?” Chansung’s eyes seemed to become darker as anger started to build up inside him. He was planning on being with Seohyun that night, and Yoona had spoiled it all for him, like she had pretty much spoiled everything else in his life (that’s what he believed).

“I didn’t. It just pissed me off when you treated her like an object instead of a human being. You don’t care about her feelings, sometimes I think you don’t care about her at all!” Yoona couldn’t keep it inside any longer, even if she knew this wasn’t a good time to get into a fight with Chansung.

“And since when do you care!? If I didn’t know you two are supposed to be friends, I’d even believe that you two hate each other!” Chansung spat back and Yoona couldn’t help but think that the boy had a good point. After Yoona confessed and Seohyun rejected her, they would barely acknowledge each other, which didn’t go unnoticed by Chansung. Yoona bit her lip, thinking that she couldn’t say something back without telling Chansung everything, so she kept quiet. “See? I knew it. You don’t care about Seohyun either; all you care about is ruining my life.” Yoona’s nostrils flared at the accusation. If only she could tell Chansung how she cared for Seohyun, if only she could yell it out for the world to hear, but that seemed to be far from what could happen. He turned around to leave, but Yoona turned him around.

“Where do you think you’re going?” She asked, hoping that he was leaving for good, at least for the rest of the evening.

“Away from you, or are you going to chain me to the wall so I can’t go anywhere?” He asked sarcastically, taking his coat and giving Yoona one last glare before going out the front door. Yoona just stood there, dumbfounded. She didn’t know if Chansung leaving abruptly was a good or a bad thing; sure, she needed him out so she could finish up the last details for her plan, but what if he was going to Seohyun’s? And if he went somewhere else, what if he came back earlier than thought and caught her and Seohyun? It was all too confusing. All she was certain of, is that she needed to act quickly.

Yoona did the final touches to her house and room, practiced the song a couple more times to make sure it was perfect and when it was all finally done, she knew it was now or never. She took her cellphone and started writing a text message.

Is Chansung with you right now? If he isn’t, would you mind coming over?

- Yoona

She didn’t have to wait long until her cellphone vibrated.

I’ll be right over

- Seohyun

Once she received the text, she took a deep breath to calm herself down, before turning off the living room’s lights and going up to her room. She connected her keyboard to the amplifier and started playing Time Machine. Her heart did a summersault when she heard the front door being opened, but she didn’t stop playing. In fact, she pressed the keys even harder now that she knew Seohyun was listening to her.

The younger girl was caught off guard when she saw Yoona’s text, but she would take advantage of any opportunity she had to at least cross a few words with Yoona. When she entered the door, she was expecting to see Yoona there waiting for her. Instead, the living room was pretty much in the dark, if it wasn’t for a small lamp that gave the whole place a red-ish glow. There was familiar music playing, but when she recognized it as her latest written song; Time Machine. As she heard closely, she noticed it was being played with both chords and melody because no one was singing. She decided she couldn’t wait any longer to see what was truly going on, but as she went towards the stairs, she found piece of paper taped to the wall on her way up. It was impossible not to notice it from how colorful it was.

Today I woke up with the firm desire of moving on. I had never felt so certain about where my life was heading. But then I realized that if I truly want to move forward… I can’t do it without you. I’m sorry if I stole your songs, but I wanted to show you that I care about what you do. Your love is the biggest blessing I’d been given, and even if we can’t be together, I treasure it with all my life. Now, come upstairs so I can see you.

Seohyun didn’t need to be told twice. She pretty much ran upstairs and towards Yoona’s room. By the time she had reached the room, the music had stopped. She opened the half closed door completely, revealing Yoona, who was standing in the middle of the ample room with a stoic expression on her face. The room was slightly dimed, which gave it a romantic feeling. She didn’t know how to act, she didn’t know if her plan had worked or if Seohyun’s doubts about good or bad had subsided. All she knew was that they were finally face to face, in more ways than one.

Seohyun couldn’t help but take the first step. She went to Yoona and hugged her tight. The doe-eyed girl, unable to contain herself any longer, wrapped her arms around Seohyun tightly. In her relief, she kissed Seohyun’s shoulder numerous times, pulling away slightly so she could kiss her cheek. It was only then that she realized Seohyun was crying. She tried to pull back just a little so that she could wipe Seohyun’s tears, but the younger girl’s hold on her was too tight.

“Don’t cry…” Yoona whispered, running her hands through Seohyun’s soft hair comfortingly. Seohyun finally pulled away just enough so they could look into each other’s eyes.

“I should have never pushed you away, Yoona. This is all my fault…” She muttered. Yoona rested her forehead against hers comfortingly, trying to let her know that she was wrong.

“You don’t know what you are saying, Hyunnie. This is nobody’s fault, and even if it were, we still have time to fix it.” Yoona whispered and Seohyun believed her. She took one of Yoona’s hand in hers, feeling giddy when Yoona’s thumb started drawing circles on the back of her hand.

“How did you know about the song?” She asked, taking a look at her sheet music resting on the keyboard’s action frame.

“It was the easiest song you had.” Yoona said honestly, making them both giggle.

“That’s not what I meant, Yoongie.” Yoona couldn’t help but blush at the nickname. “How did you know the song was about us?” Yoona furrowed her brows.

“Is it about us? Jinjja?” She asked. Seohyun nodded and bit her lip. She let go of Yoona’s hand to sit on the bench in front of the keyboard. She patted the small space next to her so that Yoona would sit, which she complied. The bench was small, so they were pressed up against each other, not that either of them minded. The coincidence was still too amazing.

“You understand Japanese, right?” Yoona nodded, looking as Seohyun gracefully put her hands in position. “I wrote this song in Japanese so that only you and I could understand it. Well, not only you and I, but you get what I mean.” She explained before Yoona had the time to ask. She started playing the intro, clearing her voice until she started to sing.

By the time she was finished, Yoona noticed tears were threatening to fall from her eyes. Before they had the chance to, Yoona took Seohyun’s face in her hands and turned her head so their eyes could meet.

“You don’t need a time machine, Hyunnie…” She trailed off lowly, shaking her head. Seohyun, once again, believed the honesty that could be seen in Yoona’s eyes. “We’re here right now.” She whispered comfortingly. Seohyun once again threw her arms around her, as if trying to prove Yoona was real, that she wasn’t an illusion or a dream. Yoona pulled away slowly and took Seohyun’s hand, guiding her to her bed. Seohyun sat on the edge of it, while Yoona climbed on the bed completely, sitting across behind Seohyun, hugging her knees to her chest. They were comfortingly close, and although Yoona wanted them to be closer, she knew she had to take things slower with the maknae, especially since Chansung seemed to be moving with giant steps.

“If I’d only knew you were happy and enjoying your life, I would just back off and let you be happy… That would be more than enough for me, but I know it’s not like that. I know you’re suffering next to Chansung, which is exactly what kills me the most.” Yoona whispered since her face was right next to Seohyun’s. The younger girl looked down.

“What about Tiffany?” She asked Yoona. Both their hearts felt heavy at the mention of Tiffany’s name. Yoona was distraught at having to break the American girl’s heart.

“She’s participating in Seoul’s annual singing contest because she wants to go to America and find her father. I promised I’d stay by her all through it. She needs me right now. It’s just unavoidable; I’ll have to break up with her. She doesn’t deserve to be living in a lie.” Yoona said. Seohyun felt sad for her best friend, because after all, Tiffany was her best friend. “And neither do you, Seohyun.” Yoona whispered, looking for Seohyun’s eyes even though they were looking in different directions. Seohyun decided to turn around so she was sitting cross-legged on the bed, facing Yoona this time. The older girl took the chance to take one of Seohyun’s hands in her own.

"What are you talking about, Yoona?" The younger girl asked when she saw the sadness that plagued Yoona's doe eyes.

"You don't deserve this, Seobaby. You don't deserve to be trapped between us." Seohyun blushed at the nickname. The brief joy was cut short by the emptiness on her chest.

"You don't deserve what I've done to you either, Yoona. I've been the worst." Seohyun said, her voice cracking.

"Don't say that. And don't cry, you're too beautiful to be crying..." The doe eyed girl muttered as she wiped Seohyun's tears with one hand, as her other one was caressing Seohyun's tiny little hand. "I just want you to tell me something. And be honest." Yoona said softly, caressing Seohyun's cheek. The maknae nodded.

"Do you love me? Or do you really love him?" Even though Yoona already knew the answer, she was desperate for some reassurance. Seohyun sighed deeply at the question. As afraid as she was of the answer to that question, she couldn't lie to Yoona.

"... I love you, Yoona." Said girl couldn't help but smile widely at the answer. The genuine smile on her features made the slightly crying girl smile, too.

"Then I'll ask you for one last thing." Yoona braced herself for what was coming. Seohyun furrowed her brows in confusion. "Kiss me." There were a few seconds of silence between the two girls.

"I thought you'd never ask."

With Seohyun’s approval, Yoona decided to go for the moment she had so longed for. The brief kiss they had shared before it all came crashing down had been just teasing. Yoona wrapped one of her arms around Seohyun’s waist as she leaned a little closer. She let Seohyun get used to the closeness as tucked a strand of hair behind Seohyun’s ear. She was about to lean all the way to Seohyun’s lips when she felt Seohyun’s hand on her shoulder. “Please go slow, Yoona…” She asked, and Yoona couldn’t say no to her.

Yoona closed the small gape between their lips as she sealed their lips in a gentle kiss. Seohyun kept her hand on Yoona’s shoulder as her other hand went to Yoona’s hair, making sure of pulling Yoona closer to her. Their lips moved in perfect synchrony. Yoona moved the hand that was holding Seohyun’s cheek to the maknae’s soft hair, knowing it would make her feel more comfortable. Her other hand, though, seemed to have a mind of its own as it drew invisible patterns all over Seohyun’s back. Yoona pulled back but kept her forehead against Seohyun’s, neither of them opened their eyes, still savoring the moment. Yoona kept pressing small pecks on Seohyun’s lips, already addicted to their taste. She pressed a kiss to Seohyun’s cheek and then to her forehead before pulling the maknae closer to her in a tight hug. Seohyun felt like she was on top of the world. Every recriminating thought on her mind seemed to disappear the moment Yoona’s lips touched hers.

“I wasn’t lying when I told you you are the most beautiful person I’ve ever met… And that will never change.” Seohyun couldn’t help but blush at Yoona’s sweet talking. “You’re so cute, Hyunnie” She said as she cupped Seohyun’s face in her hands. She was about to lean in and kiss her, but her phone vibrated, interrupting the moment. The ringing was so persistent that Yoona decided she couldn’t ignore it.

“What do you want, Dongwoon?” She said angrily through the phone. Seohyun bit her lip in jealousy when she heard the boy’s name.

“Nice talking to you too, Yoona. I’m not calling you because I felt like it.” He explained. Yoona rolled her eyes.

“Then what is it?” She asked exasperatedly.

Chansung just got into a fight at Jeondugg’s bar. The security guards kicked him out, but he’s lying on the sidewalk and I think he’s unconscious.” Dongwoon explained. Yoona widened her eyes, and by her expression, Seohyun knew it wasn’t going to be good.

“Chansung? In a bar? What is going on with the world? I’ll be right there…” Yoona said angrily before hanging up. “Chansung got into a fight. I have to bring him home… I’m sorry, Hyunnie.” She said sadly, knowing it was time for her and Seohyun to say their goodbyes. Their chances of being alone again like this would be almost nule.

“It’s okay… But how are we going to do this, Yoona? Tiffany and Chansung are…” Seohyun trailed off. Yoona nodded, understanding. Now that Seohyun had accepted her, even if it was secretly, she wanted to scream it out to the world. Chansung’s possessiveness would truly kill her this time.

“We’ll do our best… We’ll figure the rest out on the way.” She said, squeezing Seohyun’s hand in hers. Seohyun, once again, believed her.

Chapter 40: Nice end to the story. I can faint from the YoonHyun moments in this story, you know that? They're kissing in almost every chapter and their sweet words for each other, my YoonHyun feels haha. In the earlier chapters, I always felt like they were having an affair, sneaking around to see each other :p I'm happy Seohyun got better, and YoonHyun was accepted. It was also interesting to see how Chansung developed from shy to possessive to good guy.
Seriously though, this YoonHyun fic is one of the sweetest I've read in awhile. I'll be reading 'Just My Luck' soon :)

Chapter 9: I just read this story up to this chapter, and I'm loving it. What a complicated love story these characters have. YoonHyun love each other, but Yoona's with Fany and Seo with Chansung. Seo and fany are friends while Yoong and Chansung are half siblings. Woah.
Will comment again when I've gone further haha. Nice story!
