but I (don't) love you

{ Loosely inspired from a chinese novel. And Candy, I'm really sorry for the use of your format. I didn't realize until I re-read ._. }

If the only way to stay in your heart is to not be by your side, please let me go.

He found himself unable to forget about her. She was quite different from other girls, he mused. She wasn't a total , but she wasn't the best person around either. Her words were harsh, but logical. She is very beautiful, dangerously beautiful. Yet, he found himself more and more attracted to her, the more dangerous she was.

She smiled when a knife was held to , her eyes not even her fear, if she had any and she threatens with the sweetest smile. She wasn't afraid of death, she wasn't afraid of how people judge her. She was always able to turn their harsh words against themselves, finding them to be humiliated instead of her. She knows her strageties, and she uses it exceptionally well. She angers people without batting an eyelid, like the way she lies with her hauntingly beautiful smile.

He doesn't like her, he knows he doesn't. He's simply intrigued by her. Her every smile; the way she deals with things; the way she blantly ignores how the world judge her. Sometimes he couldn't help but think about what happened to her. Because she has such a beautiful and sweet smile, except that that's exactly the opposite of what she is. She has a tough wall around her heart, like the mask she wears on her face.

Everything about her is almost like a mystery, and he is determined to uncover it.

After the slap she gave him on the first day of school.

He is not the typical boy either. To all the girls in the school, he is the hearthrob of the school. Not only because of his beautiful perfect looks, but perhaps also because of his presence. There was something distinctly different about him that they couldn't point on, but couldn't help falling deeper in love with him everytime they see him.

Maybe it's his eyes. Those eyes that can convey emotions better than any sweet words or actions. And she hates him for that. She hates how his eyes are so beautifully perfect. Those eyes that could act and lie. He was a perfect actor. Just one look from his eyes, he is able to control the whole situation to his advantage. And his smile. Those smile that could pull a tug at anyone's heart (apart from her's).

She knows he is a mystery himself, and she wants to have nothing with him.

//

“What's your motive?”

“Do I need one?” he smiled.

She really hates his smile.

“There got to be a reason as to why you're wanting to help me,” her sharp clear eyes pierced into his.

And she realizes his eyes are deep. Too deep without an end.

“Why yes,” he chuckled, “I guess there is.”

She raised an unamused lone brow.

“But that's for me to know,” he smiled.

She glared at him, but he seems oblivious.

“Oh yes, welcome to the school, Yoona,” he smiled, “I'm Kris.”

“How do you—”

“Luhan did told me that a girl was transfering to our school, he told me to take care of her.”

And that's when she slapped him. Firm and hard. And then without a second glance she walked away. Instead of being angry, he was more amused. Ignoring the stinging pain, he smiled. Too beautiful, too dangerous. Everything will be so interesting. How easy it was, to make you show your true feelings, Im Yoona.

Yes, everything will be very interesting indeed.

//

She stormed off in anger, not sure if she was more angry at who. How dare he. How dare he. How dare he mention his name in front of her. She was surprised she only gave him a slap, because she wanted to do more than that. Her whole body trembled from anger, she held the sink in front of her, gripping it so tightly her knuckles were starting to turn white.

And then if felt like something shattered within her.

As much as she tried to hold it together, to hold it in, something still shattered. Breathing became a difficulty. She found herself suffocated from pain, like four years ago when he wasn't there. She tried to breath, but each tries hurt her lungs. And she wonders if she's about to die. Because dying sounds so alluring right now. And all she wants to die was to die. Like how she wanted to three years ago, when she was forcefully strapped down to the surgery bed, screaming in pure agony, wishing to die yet never allowed to.

And she hated him. She hated him so much it hurts. But she still hated him.

She hated that she couldn't forget about him (as much as she tries to).

//

“Is she doing fine?”

“She hates you so much,” he chuckled as he didn't answer his question.

He watch him sigh; his eyes betraying so much of his emotions. Kris felt amused at how easy it was to read Luhan. He was like an open book.

“How is she?” he stubbornly asked.

“Fine,” Kris smirked, “Without you around to bring her more pain.”

And that struck Luhan more painfully than anything else. He knows she hates him, he knows the reason why perfectly well. Sometimes Luhan wonders how different things would be if they never met. One thing for sure, she wouldn't have to suffer so much. He knew what happened to her that day, he tried to stop, but what more could he do? Forcefully imprisoned in his own room, by the time he managed to shake the others off, it was over.

He promised.

She needed him the most. Yet he wasn't there.

He broke his promise.

“Protect her,” he pleaded.

“That's your job,” Kris blantly refused and left.

Luhan slumped against the sofa. It's his job.

He already failed.

It hurts to know that she hates him more than anyone else in this world.

//

Kris learnt to see past Yoona's facade. It wasn't hard. She was a mystery, but she was also an open book. He was also one who knew his strageties well, and use it well. He know his smiles always infuriates her; he is like someone who could read minds, his gaze always penetrates her being, and made her feel uncomfortable. She didn't want him around; she didn't want him to know too much about her — those things that she tried so desperately to conceal and forget.

Yoona hates to be reminded of things she wants to forget.

“I can help you get him back,” he offered.

“Why would I want him back?” she snapped.

He merely smiled at that question like it amused him. And Yoona has the urge to snap at him literally.

//

Kris frowned.

He watches the girl yell at Yoona, who does nothing but smiles ever so beautifully back at the girl, which infuriates her even more. The words were harsh to anyone's ears, and for some reason, he didn't like to hear them being targeted to her, who seems oblivious to the harshness of the words.

“You're a ! That's what you are!”

“Thank you,” Yoona smiled sweetly, as if it was a compliment.

Kris watches the girl storm off, Yoona still maintaining her sweetest smile.

“Why would you allow someone to degrade you like this?” he couldn't help but ask.

She merely smiled.

“Is being called a nothing to you?”

“If being a means getting what I want, why not?” and she smiled her sweetest smile at him.

And Kris wonders just what once happened to her, that it matters nothing to her being called a .

//

Kris understands her pain. Because he's been through the same. She was an orphan at the age of seven, adopted only because of the family's sickly daughter. Unfortunately or not, she had the same rare blood type as the rich princess and was simply a backup to be used whenever the princess needs her blood.

He was not very different from her.

One thing for sure, both of them had the same enemy.

His father was killed in a fire which he only managed to survive because he wanted to buy him a present. A present for his father who took great care of him, who always taught him how beautiful life was. But life was not beautiful. Life was ugly, yet fascinating like the orange flow of the flickering fire that grows stronger every second.

He has only one goal in life: revenge.

They both went through the same pain. He understands her. They're all just people living lives in masks, under facades to protect themselves. But she stubbornly refuses anyone's help. She wasn't weak, she didn't need anyone's pity.

It was then he realized that the more beautiful she smiled, the more pain she's hiding within.

//

“You can cry, you know. No one's going to laugh at you,” Kris frowned.

Yoona glared at him.

“I'm not weak—

“No one said you were!” Kris yelled, unable to contain his own anger that came without a reason.

Or maybe it's because Yoona reminds him too much of himself — of who he once were.

“Crying doesn't mean being weak.

//

“Stop acting like you understand me! What would someone like you know?” she screamed.

And something else shattered within her.

His gaze never left.

//

Yoona stares numbly as he walks ever so elegantly towards the stage. The principal behind him smiling like a fool just because he was from a wealthy background. Their eyes meet, and he drops his ring. Her eyes narrowed as she saw his purpose. The ring rolled towards her, as if wanting her to pick up, wanting her to return to his side.

Yoona kicks the ring far away from her, and walks away.

Luhan could only smile in sadness, while the crowds wonder if they knew each other, or was this another method she was using to attracts another guy's attention. Kris smirks as he picks up the silver ring instead. The crowds dispers, and Luhan walked towards Kris.

“I should have know,” Kris chuckled, throwing the ring towards Luhan and walked away.

Luhan smiles to himself as he holds the ring in his hand. What was he expecting? She would never forgive him so easily. But at least she didn't forget about him. He didn't mind if she hated him, it was fine as long as she remembered him. Nothing else mattered, as long as he still remains in her heart, even if that means having to be hated by her. He was the elegant prince, yet he sunk so low for her.

Everything was just for her.

//

Luhan is exceptionally beautiful. He is the definition of perfect. But despite that, the girls in the school always look at Kris. There was simply just something within him that attracted them more than Luhan would. Perhaps it was because Luhan was too angelic, a face that hides too many of his real emotions and thoughts; Kris was much more mature, and of course, his acting skills has always been much better.

“You could have saved her.”

“I tried.”

“Not enough, obviously.”

Maybe Kris was right. And Luhan knows it very well. Maybe that was why he hated himself so much, perhaps more than Yoona hates him. He should have tried harder. A broken leg was nothing compared to the pain Yoona had to go through.

Kris continued his drawing, as if they were never having a conversation. And Luhan envies him, sometime he wishes he could be like him too. Acting like he couldn't be bothered with the world, no matter how much it hurts. And he caught sight of one of the unfinished sketch Kris left by the side.

Yoona.

He had drew her. And Luhan suddenly found his breathing in raggs. Something was suffocating him, maybe it was the sketch, or maybe it was the meaning behind the sketch. Kris barely raised a brow at him. Luhan forced a smile even though it kills him inside.

“You'd treat her well.”

“And how are you sure?”

Luhan has no answer.

//

Kris smiles.

Luhan and Yoona, despite how hard they try to hide, it's always easy for Kris to find their weakness.

And Kris tears the unfinished sketch of Yoona as he watches Luhan walks away.

It is interestingly amusing.

//

Yoona glares at the uninvited figure in front of her. He was the last person she ever wants to see again. Resisting the temptation to slap him, she tried to blantly ignore everything about him and walk away. Luhan said nothing as he watches her avoid him. It hurts him, but he rather he was the one hurting.

He had been quite a mess. Never before had Luhan allowed him to be so drunk, his uniform untucked and his hair in a beautiful mess.

Yoona found herself unable to look away from him as much as she wants to. Part of her was worried, Luhan had always been strong, he always had the air of a great ruler, someone meant to rule and accomplish great things. Yet the him now was not the Luhan she once knew — or thought she knew anyway.

Luhan falls right in front of her eyes.

“Xi Luhan, just what exactly is wrong with you?

“I thought you didn't care anymore.

“I don't.

Luhan smiles.

Yoona hates his smile.

Because it's so beautiful that it causes her heart to skip a beat.

His smile that once only belonged to her.

“I hate you so much.

It break both of their hearts.

//

They met again. Yoona tries to walk away from him, determined to avoid him even if that's the last thing she does. She barely felt the gentle yet firm grip around his wrist as he pulled her towards her. Struggling, she refused his touch, not even for a second. She yelled, she cursed, she threatened, but still he hugged her tightly in his embrace.

Yoona continues to struggle. Because she knows that if she doesn't, she would fall deeper into his trap. She couldn't afford to lose herself in his sweetness again. Those were delusions. And delusions, stay delusions. They would never change. She didn't want to fall back into his life, those happiness that didn't belong to her. And so she struggled.

She didn't want to hear anything that he has to say; she didn't want to be involved with anything that has him in it. She tried not to cry. Years ago she learnt not to cry because she knows there would be no one to dry her tears. Years ago on the day when he wasn't there for her. Years later she still refuses to cry because there still won't be anyone around to dry her tears. She didn't want him around, those illusions he created. Years ago she foolishly believed that he had really loved her; that his promises wouldn't be broken. Years ago she learnt from her mistake, yet years later she seems to still fall for them.

“I love you.” Luhan whispered, his tears flows.

And she falls. Hard.

//

They kissed. Luhan missed her kisses and her soft lips. Yoona misses the way she melts into his skilled and passionate kisses. So they kissed. Hard, unexpected and full of pain and lost love. Something shattered within both of them. And they kissed harder, as their tears flowed freely.

You weren't there,” she cried, “You weren't. How could you?”

“I'm sorry Yoona,” he cried, “I'm sorry. I should have been there, I should have stopped them. I shouldn't have let them done such things to you. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry.”

He should have never made promises that he couldn't keep.

Their tears never stop flowing.

They got lost each other's world. It's like they found light again, and they hang onto it desperately because that's all they have left. They need each other, and they have each other now. Nothing else mattered.

“I hate you, I really do.

“I love you,” he whispered into her ear.

And they kissed again.

//

Kris knew. He always knows.

He is happy for her, for him, for them.

And his heart breaks a little more.

He always knew it was going to be one-sided. He warned and reminded himself time and again not to fall for her, no matter how special she might be. He shouldn't have fell for someone who would never love him back. But he did anyway. And he falls for her hard. She was all that mattered, she was the only person who let him felt what love was, what happiness was once again. But she didn't belonged to him.

She belonged to someone else.

He knew that from the start.

And he smiles. So beautiful, so breath-taking, and so painful.

//

“I love you,” Kris smiled.

That was his first time saying those three words to her.

“I'm sorry,” Yoona tried not to cry.

And that was also her first time apologizing to him.

//

Kris watches as Yoona smiles with Luhan. And he smiles, even if it hurts. Because they are beautiful together. And Kris understands that Yoona wouldn't be able to love another one else when all this time, her heart only had Luhan.

Luhan smiles because Yoona is beside him. He knew he was being selfish. He knows Kris loves Yoona as much as he does, but he couldn't let her go. He needs her in his life because she is his life. He hates himself for it, but he couldn't let Yoona go. She meant to much to him. Luhan had always been gentle and caring. He cares a lot about his family and friends. He never wanted to be the heir of his father's company, but he took up the job anyway, determined to make it better than his father and grandfather ever would.

He was gentle and caring, but deep within he was ruthless, cunning and artful. He would always be able to turn situations into his advantage with a simple speech because he has the talent. And so he did, he brought the company to it's greatest height, and continues climbing. He would do nothing to destroy someone or something in his path, and to protect Yoona.

He really was not much different from both of them.

They were all just people living behind their masks.

//

And Luhan kisses Yoona again.

~~~
A/N: I wonder if it's a little confusing? I'm sorry if it is. But I think I got lazy explaining within the story of the three of their different lives. Maybe I'll explain sometimes later. I know this isn't very good because I had a lost of inspiration writing halfway and the ending is always so hard to write. I added Kris in last minute, because well, he's climbing up my bias list. LOL. Anyway, it's like a triangle except that Kris never had a chance. Yoona never loved him. Anyway, I hope I didn't disappoint. As I say, I guess oneshots are the best for me. I should just stick to it. Writing chaptered stories are so not my forte. Kekes. Maybe I'll continue writing more oneshots, maybe not. Who knows? And as for the format, credits to Candy! I'm sorry Candy! Anyway, enjoy ^^
