New Found Friendship

My Nerd Prince [BACK FROM LONG HIATUS]

"Sungyeol-ah, I like you. Will you please go out with me."

Ok, what? I am thoroughly confused right now. It wasn't that much long ago when Mi Jin would cuss me out during our tutoring sessions and now she's saying she likes me? This must be a big joke.

"Haha Mi Jin you are so funny. You're not fooling anyone. And since when did you start calling me Sungyeol-ah? You've always called my name followed by an inappropriate word." Mi Jin stared at me, dumbfounded. She peered hard at the invisible air trying to recollect her thoughts.

Seeing that she doesn't have a slight clue of what I'm talking about (or pretending to), I continued my dialogue. "I know today's April Fools Days, Mi Jin. This is all just a big joke." Mi Jin's eyes widened. "WHAT?!" She quickly whipped out her phone to check the date. She sighed. "Look, this is all just a big misunderstanding. I actually like-" I cut her off.

"I know this is a big joke. You don't like me. And besides, why would a queenka like you would want something to do with a nerd like me?" I pointed to myself, "and come to think of it, I've heard of something like this happen like this with you over the past few years too. There's seriously something wrong with you. What if the previous guys actually mistook your joke as your real feelings? That must've been disastrous." I shook my head in disappointment and annoyance. "We should go back to the volleyball court right now. The game's starting in a few minutes."

I was about to open the door when I heard Mi Jin burst into laughter. She was laughing so much that she actually started bending over to hold in her stomach. "Wow, you caught on fast. Out of all the guys I've 'confessed' to, you're the only one that actually knew my plan beforehand. I commend you for that," she said in between laughs.

"Well, It's my honour. I feel touched," I joked. Mi Jin followed me to the door. As we got out of the music room, I couldn't help but glance at Mi Jin. I saw a tinge of sadness in her eyes but I simply ignored it. "You were pretty good with your emotions back there. You should consider acting."

Mi Jin chuckled. "Should I?" I nodded. "I'll be waiting for your first drama on TV. Or better yet, your first movie. I'd be the first in line," I said cheerfully. Mi Jin nudged me lightly on the arm. "You better be. I'm going to be the best actress you'll ever see." She laughed. I suddenly stopped in my tracks and faced her. "Oh, and another thing. I know we started on the wrong foot but nowadays, I don't think you're that bad. Maybe a few attitude problems but overall, I think you're great to talk to and your friends are probably lucky to have a friendship with you. If it's not much to ask of you, I'd like to build a friendship with you as well."

Mi Jin smiled. "Sure. And to be quite honest, I don't think you're that bad either. Maybe a few sudden bursts of anger but overall, I think you're funny and your friends are probably lucky to have such a friendly relationship with you," she mimicked. I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, bestie.

"Oh look at that, we already have nicknames for each other." Mi Jin laughed and tried to pat my head but wasn't able to since she was way shorter than me. "Ugh damn, why do I have to be so freaking short." I heard her mutter as she slumped back down in defeat. I chuckled. You're actually really not that bad, Mi Jin. You're good, you're just not capable of realizing that and neither is everyone else.

We were nearing the volleyball court when I noticed the empty pitcher in my hands. "Oh my god, I forgot the water!," I started panicking. "What's wrong?," Mi Jin asked. "I was on my way to get water for the volleyball team when I heard you playing the piano and you know what happened next after that. I better go, the game's starting any second now. They're gonna be pissed if they don't have water before they start the game." I started running towards the school entrance.

"Wait," Mi Jin called out. "What?," I screamed as I continued to run towards the school. "Get me a bottle of water too. I'll pay you back later." Aish, this girl.

When I came back, the match was already in full swing. The other team won the first game and Cho Hee's team won the second. The match was tied. Mi Jin was screaming frantically at Cho Hee as she spiked the volleyball.

"You're the best Cho Hee!! Woooo! The other team to be honest. They're just a bunch a shi-" I reacted quickly and covered Mi Jin's mouth before she could continue her inappropriate dialogue. People around the court stared at us as if we were lunatics but everyone's attention was quickly diverted to the game when the other team returned Cho Hee's deadly spike.

"Let's win this game, Cho Hee's team. The other team are just a bunch of e-" I pinched Mi Jin's cheeks and communicated to her with my eyes. "Stop swearing, Mi Jin," my eyes said. Mi Jin rolled her eyes. "Whatever," her eyes replied.

Suddenly, random bursts of loud applause and disapproving boo's from the other side were heard around the volleyball court. People on on our side of the side were chanting "Cho Hee! Cho Hee! Cho Hee!" Mi Jin immediately knew what happened even though her eyes had never witnessed the last minutes of the match. She ran away from her spot and quickly went to Cho Hee to give her her congratulatory high-five.

Time passed by quickly. Before long, it was already noon and everyone was scurrying off to the cafeteria to feed their hunger. Everyone was exhausted and it was only the first half of the day. I quickly scanned the cafeteria and saw Mi Jin sitting with her friends. I was about to turn the other way around when Mi Jin called out my name. "Sungyeol! Why don't you sit with us? Call your friends over too."

Murmurs were quickly heard the room. I simply dismissed and continued looking for Myungsoo and Sungjong. After having not much luck of finiding them, I decided to sit with Mi Jin and her friends.

Mi Jin's friend, Min Hee, gave her strange looks as I sat down. She whispered inaudible words into her ear and Mi Jin quickly shook her head, her face a little red. I looked down at my lunch and broke my chopsticks in half. All was in peace when one girl in our table suddenly squealed. Lina, I think her name is.

"Sungjong! Call your friend and sit with us," she said, her hands waving frantically in the air. Sungjong saw her and nodded. He skipped happily to our table, along with Myungsoo at his side.

"So guys," Lina started, "this is Sungjong and Myungsoo. I met them at the tennis court earlier. Sungyeol, you're friends with them right?" I nodded and continued eating the noodles the school (and our class) had happily provided for the event. Sungjong and Myungsoo sat down, filling the space the table had left.

There was small chatter here and there but overall, our table was quiet. I don't know if everyone's just too hungry to talk or it's awkwardness around each other. I'm betting it's the latter. After all, we're sitting with people we've never talked to before.

Mi Jin, sensing the awkward atmosphere, decided to make things livelier by starting a discussion everyone could engage in. "How was everyone's morning?," she said casually. Everyone almost immediately opened their mouths to contribute to the discussion.

I stood up and threw out the the cardboard box the food had once been in. I warily walked back to the table and sat down. The once quiet table was now filled with heavy chatter. I was never much a fan of loud noises and the situation at our table wasn't helping. I couldn't do anything but listen to everyone talk. Everyone was talking as if they've known each other and even though I was among them, I couldn't help but feel left out.

"Who wants ice cream? Let's all go to the ice cream shop across after school," Mi Jin suggested amidst the discussion. That got my attention quick. I do love ice cream. I love it more than I'm willing to admit. "Me!" I quickly raised my hand, my eyes shining. Everyone else did the same. Mi Jin laughed. "That's settled then. Let's all meet at the school gates after school ends."

Chocolate ice cream, here I come!
