In The Arms of A Stranger

A Stranger's Secret

A girl wearing a black hooded jumper with her head bent down sat on an old wooden bench as a tear fell, staining her rosy cheeks. She sniffed and before you know it, the tears she tried so hard to hide, fell uncontrollably. Trying to stop her cries, she placed her right hand on as her left hand rubbed her eyes. There were so many things going on in her head.

"Stopping yourself from crying will only make it worse."

A deep voice pulled her out of her thoughts. She hadn't realized there was someone next to her. She lifted her head slightly, giving the person a side glance but quickly averted her gaze back down on the ground.

She let out a bitter chuckle and looked him straight in the eyes. His brown orbs staring into her puffy eyes and he felt a small tug on his chest, where his heart is.

"And what exactly are you trying to suggest?"

She was still looking at him and he couldn't help but notice the strange feeling he felt when she spoke. Her voice was raspy and strained. Any person with a brain could tell there was something bothering her.

"Let it out, as you lean on a shoulder." He wanted to hit himself right on the spot. He bit his lip as his eyes grazed on the horizon as if looking for something but really he couldn't take the intense gaze she was giving him.

"And are you proposing to be that shoulder?" She asked a small smile tugged on her pink lips. He shrugged. He somehow managed to make her feel more comfortable.

"But you're a stranger." The statement didn't surprise him but what he said definitely surprised her.

"Exactly," Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion but she agreed nonetheless.

He shuffled closer to her and placed his arm around her small frame as he pushed her head gently on his broad shoulders. He felt her stiffen with his touch but almost immediately relaxed. Seconds later her body started to shake and her cries became louder. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't think of any words that could comfort her. He couldn't exactly say everything was going to be okay when he didn't even know the reason she was crying – A fact that irked him. He wanted to make the pain go away so he did the only thing he could do. He held her tighter as he drew small circles on her back using his thumb.

Her cries had subsided hours ago and her breathing was even – A hint that she had fallen asleep. She must be tired, he thought as a small smile spread across his lips. He felt so comfortable with her in his arms that it was strange, so strange that he couldn't help but notice the fast beating of his heart.

He let his eyes rest on her peaceful face. She looked so innocent with her lips slightly parted as she breathes steadily in and out. It was inviting but he shook of the unnecessary thoughts for he hadn't forgotten that the woman sleeping on his shoulder is nothing but a stranger to him.

Ring. Ring.

His phone rang and at that moment he wanted nothing but to just throw it on the ground when he felt the fragile girl shift. He didn't want to wake her up but it was too late. She was already rubbing her eyes trying to get the sleepiness out of her system. She squint her eyes and looked around, familiarizing herself with the surrounding. Then it hit her. She looked to her right only to see the stranger speaking on the phone in hushed tones.

She leaned back on the bench as she felt the burden she carried was a lot lighter than it was before. A smile was painted on her lips as she looked around the place. She hadn't realized she had come to a park. She watched as a handful of children played tag. She observed the way they laughed so innocently and without having a care in the world. She wished she could go back to those days… when life wasn't complicated and scary.

She felt the man beside her stuff something in his pocket, probably his phone. She looked at him again and he met her eyes. She smiled, silently thanking him and he gave a small nod and a timid smile back. How was it possible to have two strangers feel so comfortable in each other's company?

"Thank you," She shifted her eyes towards the children again, feeling slightly embarrassed about the whole predicament.

"My pleasure,"

They sat quietly. Their heart beats contrasting their steady breathing. Minutes had passed and no one dared break the silence. They hadn't realized it was starting to get darker and colder too. She broke the silence.

"Can you keep a secret for me?" She didn't look at him. She was scared to. She knew she shouldn't be saying this to anyone. This was a secret that was meant to be forgotten. But there was something about him that told her it was okay to trust him. That he wouldn't hurt her.

"O-okay," he stammered. His voice was full of concern as he watched the girl shaking. She started to cry again. He tried to comfort her by lending her his shoulders again but she just pushed him away. She stood up and he followed suit. She stared in his orbs as tears trickled down her cheeks. He could see the pain, the regret and the sorrow in her eyes. And his heart ached for her. What could he do to make her feel better? He was almost panicking but her cries stopped.

She took a step closer to him and he just watched her, waiting for something she's about to do. But what he hadn't expected was for her to throw her arms around his neck and burry her face on his shoulder. He found himself hugging back the girl as she tried her hardest to make her breathing even.

She stepped back, releasing her hold on him and him doing the same. She placed her hands on his shoulder and made him look at her.

"I killed someone."

Her voice was weak and the words that came out were forced. He gasped, shocked at her confession. There was no way she could. He couldn't believe it. This girl can't have killed anyone. She's too innocent. But he couldn't deny the truth he saw in her eyes as she spoke those words. Before he could tell her what he thought, she was already gone. He could only see her figure running away, leaving him with questions – A lot of questions.
