“Umma!” a little girl cried out as she ran to hide her face in her mother’s skirt. “This boy kept on stepping on my white shoes today!”

The little girl of five years was the flower girl of her older cousin’s wedding, wearing a white dress whose full skirt was made of ruffles with a purple ribbon as a belt. The matching white shoes that she mentioned now had black scuff marks at its toes, courtesy of a clumsy, sniffling little boy.

“I’m really s-s-sorry!” stuttered the boy, who had followed the girl in an attempt to apologize again. “Omoni, I’m really sorry! My umma said I have two left feet, but I wanted to dance anyway…”

The mother of the girl held onto her daughter as she bent down to eye level of the boy. He flinched when her hand approached his face, but he was surprised when he felt fingers patting the top of his head.

“There, there,” she said. “Don’t cry, too. My little Yoonji is just very protective of her shoes. Maybe it’s her who has two left feet!”

“I do not!” Yoonji said, and she walked away from her mother and the little boy.

Yoonji sat on one of the couches at the lounge of the venue where the reception was being held. She heard the dance music coming from the reception hall and wished she was in there moving around with the other children her age, but her mood was ruined when she thought of the little boy stepping on her precious shoes as they tried to dance earlier.

“Hey,” a voice said. “Why are you crying?”

She looked up and saw one of the little boys that was playing with her and the other children, but she couldn’t remember his name. This boy didn’t have chubby cheeks like the other one, though he had raven black hair that matched his eyes. She thought he looked a bit scary at first but saw how soft his eyes were as he held out a tissue to her.

Yoonji hesitantly took it from him and wiped her eyes, and before she knew it, she was being pulled back to the reception hall.

“H-h-hey!” she called out, when they reached the dance floor.

“It looks like you wanted to dance,” he said, twirling her around so that the skirt of her dress spun around with her.

The little boy did this a couple more times until she stopped protesting.

“Feel better?” he asked.

“I do,” she answered with a smile, and they continued to dance in the way that children did at weddings.

“Honey, it’s time to go home,” Yoonji’s mother said when she found her returning from the restroom.

“Umma!” she said loudly as she ran to her, this time, with a smile on her face. “I met such a nice boy who knew how to dance!”

Her mother looked at her fondly, surprised at how her daughter’s mood changed from earlier.

“Where is he?” she asked. “I’d like to meet him.”

“I asked him to wait for me here, but I don’t see him now,” she said with a pout, looking around the lounge. “I didn’t even get to ask what his name was…”

“Maybe we’ll see him at the next wedding, okay?” her mother suggested.

Yoonji nodded vigorously in reply. She and her mother then made their way to the car where her father was waiting for them. She was looking forward to the next time she’d meet the little boy.
