That Day

Admit It, I'm Useless

The day started off the same way it did every day.

I was enjoying sweet dreams about Pororo and Crong when I felt two hands shake me by the shoulders.

"Chan ah~ Wake up~" I heard Baro hyung's voice.

Reluctantly, I dragged myself out of bed and headed to the toilet to wash up.

"Morning, Channie!" my hyungs chorused. I have always been the last to wake up.

"Good morning, hyungs~" I replied sleepily.

It was a free day, so after breakfast we settled down to our own things. I headed over to the computer and logged on to Twitter. It was about time I got in touch with the BANAs.

I checked my messages.

Oppa! You're SOOOO cute!!! When are you coming to perform in Malaysia?? @Chan_rin

Channie oppa is so cute~ ^^♥ @ You

Gongchannie! Where are you?? We miss the aegyo maknae~ :P @BANA

I replied the messages half-heartedly. It's not that I didn't appreciate them, it's just that I was tired of hearing this. Cute, cute, cute, aegyo maknae. That seemed to be the only adjective that could fit me.

I felt a slight sadness come over me. There was nothing wrong with being cute - and I liked being cute - but I could do more than just be cute, you know. I could sing too. I could dance. I could make jokes. But no one ever noticed that about me.

At that moment, I heard Sandeul hyung belt out a high note from another room. It sounded really good. And it was probably why no one took notice of my singing. Sandeul was the best singer. My vocals could never compare to his.

I then became curious and decided to spy on my other hyungs.

I found Shinwoo hyung dancing in the practice room. He seemed completely determined to perfect the new move he was learning. He was definitely a dedicated dancer, and the best in our group. I could dance too, but compared to him, I was more stiff and found it difficult to perform complexed moves.

I sighed and moved on.

In the studio, I saw Jinyoung hyung working on a new song. His eyes were glued to the computer screen, fiddling around with different filters, playing and replaying different parts over and over again. He reached for a pencil and scribbled some lyrics on a notepad and then proceeded to sing them, tapping his pencil along with the rhythm. Jinyoung hyung was always working hard and had a lot of talent when it came to these things. I had none.

I walked past the living room and caught a glimpse of Baro hyung. He was fanboy-ing over the Girls' Generation poster again. I couldn't help but smile. Baro hyung always knew how to make us laugh.

Way more than I ever could. My face dropped again.

I went to the bedroom again, sat myself down at a desk and burried my face in my hands.

Sometimes, I couldn't help but feel useless around the others.

I mean, Jinyoung hyung produces and composes songs.
Shinwoo hyung dances, sings AND raps.
Sandeul hyung is the most amazing singer.
And Baro hyung always makes us laugh.

What was left for me?

Being cute? No, the others were cute too.

I questioned being a member of B1A4 in the first place.

Why was I even recruited?

What did the manager see in me?

Does B1A4 actually need me to succeed?

Tears began to form in my eyes.

It was at that moment I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Channie, what's wrong?" Jinyoung hyung asked.

"Hyung... Just admit it, I'm useless, aren't I?" I started sobbing.

Jinyoung hyung seemed taken aback by my question.

"Who ever told you that?"

"Answer me, hyung! It's true, isn't it?"

"Of course not! You are the aegyo maknae!" Shinwoo hyung came into the room.

I felt my eyes burn at those words. Aegyo maknae. Cute. That was all I was.

"And that's all I'll ever be, isn't it?!" I screamed before I bursted into tears.

Jinyoung hyung patted my back soothingly.

"Nonsense. You are the one that gives all of us strength."

"You make us feel confident each time we get up on stage," Shinwoo hyung added.

"And you're the one that really takes care of us, even though you're younger," Baro hyung continued, leaning against the door post.

"Not to mention you're very popular with the ladies," Sandeul hyung popped in, wiggling his eyebrows.

"You give us energy when we're tired and always support us in what we do..." said Jinyoung hyung.

"... And you always brighten up the stage when we perform," Shinwoo hyung finished.

I looked up at my hyungs hopefully.

"Y - you really mean it?"

"Of course we do, babo!" Baro hyung knocked my head playfully.

"It wouldn't be B1A4 without you," Sandeul hyung smiled.

I laughed happily as the others glomped me.

I guess I wasn't so useless after all.
