Neighbors
BlindlyFrom downstairs, Jongup faintly heard the doorbell ring.
"Get that, son. I'm unpacking." Mr. Moon yelled from the other room.
Jongup rushed downstairs to the front door and peered out of the peep hole. Two blonde boys were outside, holding something in their hands. Jongup smoothed his clothes then opened the door.
"Hey neighbor! We heard you moved in today, so we wanted to give you a moving-in present!" The one with curly hair said excitedly, pushing a plate of cookies into Jongup's hands.
"I'm Bang Yongguk and this is Choi Junhong." The other one said. His voice was deep and Jongup figured he was in his early twenties.
"Call me Zelo! We live just up the street. You should come over sometime. Gets lonely up here sometimes. How old are you?"
"...This kid talks fast. He could be a rapper." Jongup thought, just staring blankly at him.
"Yah, calm down." Yongguk hit Zelo on his head, "I hope you and Zelo can get along. Feel free to come over any time."
"T-Thank you for the cookies, Yongguk-ssi." Jongup wasn't used to interacting with people, especially people this friendly to him.
"Call me hyung," Yongguk gave Jongup a gummy smile.
"Let's talk informally, okay?" Zelo said happily. Something about this kid made Jongup smile too. His excitement was contagious.
"Sure." Jongup smiled.
"Come over for dinner tomorrow, okay? We're just up there!" Zelo bounced up and down, pointing to his left. Jongup looked out where he was pointing, but only saw trees.
"It's less than a quarter mile up the road. Hope to see you there," Yongguk said, pulling Zelo back.
"Thanks again." Jongup waved as the boys walked away. Still smiling, he closed the door and went to go put the cookies in the kitchen. Suddenly he bumped into something. Unluckily for Jongup, it was his father. His smile immediately disappeared.
"Who was that?" His father asked, taking the cookies away from Jongup.
"O-Our neighbors." Jongup said quickly. He fidgeted and wanted nothing more than to bolt upstairs into his room.
"Ah. What did they want?" Mr. Moon walked over to the kitchen and placed the plate of cookies on the counter. Jongup frowned. He knew his father wouldn't let him even think about touching those.
"They invited us to dinner tomorrow. Their house is up the street." Jongup immediately regretted telling his father. He feared that Yongguk and Zelo wouldn't want to be his friend if they found out what his father was like.
"I guess you'll have to go for us." Mr. Moon said, taking a cookie and eating it.
After seeing Jongup's questioning look, Mr. Moon continued, "I'm going out to the city to get a job. We need to get more money."
Jongup felt relieved. Suddenly he was looking forward to tomorrow.
His father opened the refrigerator and grabbed a couple beers. Jongup's eyes widened. He didn't expect that his father would get drunk the day they moved into their new house.
"Is there a problem?" Mr. Moon said slowly, walking past Jongup into the living room. He the television and placed the beer on the table next to him.
After excusing himself, he quickly jogged up the stairs to his room.
