Meant to be friends

It's Always Been You

Jennie's POV

"Goodluck" Irene said.

"Thanks."

She opened the door for me and I walked into my mom's office.

She looked disappointed and upset.

"You are an embarrassment. Do you know how you made me look today?! I had to take responsibility for your actions! Drinking?! Drinking with Hanbin?! I thought you were over him!"

How did she know I was with Hanbin?..

"You didn't come back to Korea to fall in love."

"I know. I'm sorry.." I apologized

"Worthless." She shooed me away with her hands.

I bowed at a 90 degree angle and walked out of the office.

"Worthless"

I swallowed the tears in the back of my throat and began fanning my eyes.

I always tend to mess things up.. huh? I really am just a burden.

"Jennie"

I snapped back into reality and smiled.

"Unnie"

"Your dad wants to meet with you." Irene said.

I nodded my head and followed her.

~~~
Irene ended up driving me to my dad's private golf course.
I felt a little relieved. I haven't seen my dad in 2 weeks. It's always nice talking to him.
"Princess!" He greeted with a wide smile and a hug.
I hugged him back and smiled.
"Hey dad."
"How have you been?!"
"Fine. How about you? How was the trip?"
"Fantastic! I ate a lot of seafood. Definitely not having any for a while." He chuckled. "How's the business? Mom?"
"I missed an important meeting today.. mom isn't too happy."
"You're an adult now Jen. You have to face the consequences and take responsibility for it." He said.
"Yeah it's just—"
It's just hard. I never wanted this. I don't want this. Everything is stressing me out. I wanted to have one day. ONE DAY. To have fun and enjoy myself... it seems like I could never catch a breath.
I stopped mid sentence.
"Woah! Good hit!" I said while watching my dad.
"Give it a try." He handed me the golf club.
"I'm a little rusty" I said nervously.
It's been a year since I last played golf. I use to go golfing with my dad a lot as a kid. It was something I enjoyed doing with him because my mom wasn't around. She hates golf. She thinks it's the most boring sport ever.
I spread my feet shoulder distance apart and got a good grip on the golf club. I measured the hole with my eyes and swung the club, hitting the ball very far into the field.
"Hey, that's pretty good"
I turned around and chuckled.
"Thanks—"
"Kai?!" I shouted.
"Jen!" He said and opened his arms.
I dropped the golf club and ran into his arms, wrapping my arms around him.
"What are you doing here?!" I asked.
"Your dad invited me to play golf." He smiled.
"I missed you! You knucklehead!" I said and playfully nudged him.
"You two enjoy yourselves I've got an important call to take" my dad excused himself.
"Alright." I said.
"How's Seoul been?"
"It's been fine" I replied.
"Did you make any friends? Or are people still intimidated by you?" He joked.
"I have friends" I chuckled.
"Good. I was worried that you'd be lonely."
"Worry about passing your classes" I joked making the both of us laugh.
"Ok ok. Good one" he rolled his eyes.
"How long are you going to be in Seoul?"
He rubbed his nape and let out a sigh.
"I..... moved back! And I'm also attending your university!" He shouted.
"Wait! Really?!"
"Mhm" he nodded his head.
"YAY! I'm so happy!" I cheered.
"Gosh, if I knew you'd miss me this much I would've moved earlier." He teased.
"I just miss picking on someone" I smiled innocently.
"Of course." He smiled.
"So why'd you move back?"
He looked at me and grinned.
"I miss my family."
"You've always been a mama's boy" I joked.
"And you"
I was taken aback by his statement.
"New Zealand was boring without you. Thought I'd come back and pester you."
I'm stupid for thinking weirdly of that. I shook my head.
"Let me show you around tomorrow!"
"Please do." He smiled.
End of POV
~~~~

"Sana.." Junhoe said.

The brunette turned around and ran to her car. She didn't want to believe it but who was she kidding? It's so obvious that her boyfriend has some kind of feelings for Chaeyoung.

Junhoe got up from the ground and chased after her.

"Sana I—"

*smack*

The brunette wiped her tears and rolled her eyes.

"Don't follow me." She got into her car and drove off.

Junhoe slammed his fist into the wall. He was confused. One minute Chaeyoung is all he could think about and the next minute is Sana.

What's going on with him? He thought. He's never felt so conflicted before. He knew he loved Sana but he wasn't sure anymore.

~~~~
Chaeyoung's POV
"I'm sorry if I scared you" Jungkook said.
I hid my trembling hands behind my back and smiled.
"You're fine. I was just surprised." I reassured.
He reached out to my arms and grabbed my hands. He held onto them tightly and softly brushed them with his thumb.
I looked up at him. Feeling shy.
I could feel my whole body burning up as if I had a fever.
"My grandma use to do this to me. When I was a kid, I was very afraid of the dark." He admitted. Making me giggle.
"What's funny?"
"Nothing!." I smiled. "It's cute.."
He smiled back at me.
I quickly got up confusing him.
"Sorry! I totally forgot that I had church!" I said in a hurry.
"Leave the stuff in my car, I'll drop it off to you later" he said.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Positive." He smiled.
"Thank you" I smiled.
"Have fun!" He shouted.
I waved bye and entered my car.
~~~

I walked out of the cafe and sat at one of the tables outside.

How am I gonna do this? Where am I gonna do this??

Think! Think!

Today is Jen's birthday. I wanted to do a surprise party for her but I wanted it to be very special. Jen's always been there for me. I want to let her know that I appreciate her and everything she does.

“Oh.. hi Chae!”

I looked up to see Hanbin.

Perfect. Just the person I wanted to see.

“Hey! Could you help me out with something?”

He walked towards me and sat down.

“What’s up?”

“So I want to do a surprise party for Jen but I need some ideas.” I said.

“If you need a place, we could do it at my apartment?” He offered.

“That’s perfect!” I smiled and began writing it down.

“I bought some decorations but I’m currently waiting for Jungkook to bring them. Oh! We also need to come up with an idea on how to reel her in.”

Hanbin placed his arms on top of the table and smiled.

“Well, since we’re using my apartment I’ll come up with something. So don’t worry about that. I could ask Junhoe to get the food?”

“That works! Um... let’s also invite Joy and Seulgi! I’ll have them help with the set up.” I explained.

“Alright so when does it start?”

I looked at my phone and back at Hanbin.

“It’s 12 right now... so 7 or 8. Somewhere around there. Depends on when we finish decorating.” I said.

“Great. Here’s the keys to my house. I should probably keep Jennie busy for the day and check on you guys.” He got up and handed me the house keys.

“Hey Hanbin.”

“Yeah?”

“Whatever you and Jennie are going through. I hope things work out. She cares a lot about you.” I said.

He smiled at me.

“Thanks.”

End of POV

~~~
Hanbin’s POV
I paced back and forth waiting for Jennie’s class to be over.
Will she think it’s weird that I suddenly want to spend time with her?? Of course not! We’re friends. But what if she—
“Hanbin?”
I looked up and saw a confused look on Jennie’s face.
“Oh.. hey..” I said.
“What are you doing?” She raised a brow.
Think! Think!
“You owe me!” I blurted.
Really Hanbin?
“Owe you?”
“For taking care of you last night.” I rubbed my nape.
“Um? Okay..? What do you want?” She said taking a step closer to me.
“L-lets spend the day together.”
She looked shocked. I saw that her face was turning red but it was kind of cute.
“O...okay.” She nodded her head.
~~~

I the radio to kill the awkward silence between us.

“Where are we going?” She asked.

“To an arcade” I answered

“I haven’t been to one in forever!” She said excitedly.

I looked at her and smiled.

I wish she was always this way. Carefree and smiley. She’s always so reserved and worried. I can’t blame her for being that way though.. it’s her mom’s fault. It hurts to see Jennie blame herself. I really wish she’d open up to me about it.

~~~
Like a kid Jennie ran into the arcade. In complete awe at every game. Her eyes sparkled at every one of them.
I felt myself smiling as well, at how cute she can be.
“Come on! Let’s play this one!” She said and dragged me to Dance Dance Revolution.
“Alright. Alright” I replied.
“I haven’t played this since Highschool” she chuckled and inserted the coins.
I got onto my side and waited for the arrows.
I was a little stiff but I was somehow getting most of the points.
Jennie on the other hand was dancing and singing her way through it.
“Oh come on Hanbin! You can do better than that!”
I watched as she got a perfect score on every step she took.
Feeling a little devious I stepped my foot onto her platform.
“Hey! Cheater!” She argued.
“I’m sorry.. my foot slipped!” I defended.
She jumped onto mine and began stepping everywhere.
“What are you doing?!”
She looked up at me and smiled.
“My foot slipped” she said sarcastically.
We began pushing and shoving each other while laughing.
“Oh yeah!” I said and shoved her out of my way.
She rammed into me and lifted up her head. Hitting me in the eye.
“Ouch!” I groaned.
“Oh my god! Are you okay?!” She looked up at me and gently rubbed my eye.
There she goes. Making my heart beat once again.
“I’m sorry!” She apologized.
I was staring at her without any shame. I couldn’t help it. She looked so gorgeous in this given moment.
I quickly straightened up my back and cleared my throat.
“I’m fine” I chuckled.
“Are you sure?” She sounded worried.
“Yes.” I smiled.
“I have to go to the bathroom. Will you wait for me?” She asked.
“Take your time” I answered.
She smiled and walked away.
The claw machine from across the room caught my eye. Well actually, the cute little bear did. I know how much she likes stuffed animals. It’d be a perfect gift for her since today’s her birthday.
I inserted a dollar and placed my hand on the handle. Steadily moving the claw. I measured the bear and the claw with my eyes. Hoping to get it right.
I clicked the red button, dropping the claw down.
“Come on... come on..!” I said.
The claw fell directly on top of the bear and picked it up.
“YES!” I threw a fist in the air and grabbed the bear.
I saw Jennie waiting and looking around for me. So I approached her with the bear behind me.
“Where’d you go?” She asked.
“Surprise!” I handed her the bear and her eyes lit up.
“It’s so cute!” She said while snuggling it.
“I’m glad you like it.” I said.
“Thank you so much!” She smiled.
“Something to match your bear socks” I teased.
“How’d you know—“
“I took care of you when you were drunk” I chuckled. “There’s a festival near by if you want to check that out?” I asked.
“Let’s go!” She said.
~~~

“I’m sorry you had to take care of me..” she apologized.

“It’s fine.”

Her face was turning red from embarrassment.

“You know, I’m glad you have great friends”

“You like them?” I asked.

“Yeah. They’re very welcoming.” She smiled.

“Well, now they’re your friends too” I smiled back.

“It feels good to be friends again.”

“How much?” I asked the ice cream man.

“3 dollars” he said.

“Can I get two strawberry ice cream?” I asked.

“Of course!”

I pulled out my wallet and paid the man.

“Thank you” I said and handed one to Jennie.

“Sorry. And yeah, I’m glad we’re friends. It’s refreshing.”

“Thanks. So do you like Seulgi?”

I began choking on my ice cream at the sudden question.

“You okay?!” She asked while patting my back.

“I-I’m fine. But no. Why?”

“Nothing. Just wondering.” She smiled widely.

“What’d you do in New Zealand?” I asked.

“If I’m being honest. I went out a lot. My mom wasn’t physically there to control me so I took advantage of it.” She chuckled.

“Do you miss it?”

“The freedom?”

“That. And New Zealand.”

She her ice cream and let out a sigh.

“Yes and no. I think my heart belongs in Korea. How about you? What’d you do here?”

Remembering what I did was kind of embarrassing. Especially since I didn’t do much while she was gone.

“I studied a lot. Focused on basketball and tried getting over you. I admitted.

“Well now you’re over me so you must be happy” she chuckled.

“Yeah. I mean my life doesn’t totally . I feel okay I guess.” I said.

Her expression changed.

My phone began buzzing and I saw that it was a call from Chae.

“One sec.” I said and answered the phone.

“Okay we’re ready! Bring her!”

“Alright. Bye.”

I hung up and slipped my phone into my pocket.

“Who was that?”

“My mom” I lied.

“Oh.. is everything okay?”

“Yeah she just told me to come home and eat dinner. Do you want to join us?” I asked.

She looked a little flustered. I know I was coming off too strong but I couldn’t think of anything better than that.

“Sure. I haven’t seen her in a while.” She said.

“Perfect” I smiled.

~~~~
We arrived at my apartment. I opened the door for her and closed it.
“Your apartment is really nice” she complimented.
“Thanks. It’s very expensive though” I said.
I stuck my key into the lock and unlocked the door.
I closed the door and locked it.
“SURPRISE!!!” Everyone said in sync.
She screamed and jumped into my arms.
“Gosh! You guys scared the crap out of me!” She sighed.
“Happy birthday!” Chae said while giving Jennie a big hug.
“Wow! You guys did an awesome job! I love it!” She said.
“Thanks for letting us use your apartment.” Chae said.
“Of course” I smiled.
“Let’s sing happy birthday!” Bobby said.
“Get the cake in the refrigerator!” Joy shouted.
I hurried towards the refrigerator and took the cake out.
I lit up the candles and dimmed the lights.
“Ready?” I asked.
“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Jennieeeee, Happy Birthday to you!!!” Everyone sang and clapped their hands.
“Make a wish.” I said
I watched as she closed her eyes and blew out the candles.
“Woo hoo!”
“Yay!”
“Happy birthday!”
Everyone cheered.
“Let’s eat!” Chae said while cutting everyone a slice of cake.
~~~

A couple of hours passed and everyone was drunk off their .

Except for Jennie and I. She wanted to stay sober for some reason. But I think I knew exactly why.

“I haven’t seen Chae drink this much.”

We both watched as the blonde was singing karaoke and dancing.

We began laughing at how silly Chae was being.

“She’s funny”

“Oh my god I need to record this! Jennie took out her phone and began recording the blonde.

“We are the lovesick girls!” Chaeyoung blurted.

“Yeah! She’s so good!” Bobby shouted.

“I love you!” Joy shouted.

Jungkook and Seulgi were busy laughing and cheering her on.

“She’s... so different” I chuckled

Jennie stopped recording sat her phone down.

“Thank you for today. I needed it.” She said.

“You’re welcome” I smiled.

“I should probably go. I have a meeting tomorrow morning.”

“Oh yeah, I’ll let them know that I’m dropping you off.”

She nodded her head.

I got up from the table and walked towards the living room.

“Hey! I’m going to drop Jennie off! She has a meeting tomorrow morning!” I said.

“Are you two going to—“

“Okay! Have fun!” Junhoe shouted

“Thanks!” I said and signaled Jennie to follow me.

~~~~
I parked a couple of blocks away from her house. I looked over at the back seat and reached down to grab her present.
“Happy Birthday.” I smiled.
She opened the gift and looked back up at me.
“Thank you.” She smiled.
“The weather is getting cold so I thought a beanie and a scarf would be useful..” I said shyly.
“Thank you Hanbin and thank you for the bear. I love it.”
I felt relieved and happy. I’m so glad she likes the gifts.
“From now on, I’m going to be a better friend” she said confidently.
“Why?”
“I thought about it and maybe we didn’t work out because we were meant to be friends” she smiled.
Just like that I felt my heart stop beating. Was I hearing this right? I mean friends is better than nothing but a part of me was hurt.
“Yeah. We probably weren’t meant to be” I chuckled. “It’s late I should drop you off.”
I pulled up to her driveway and parked the car.
“Who’s that?..” I asked.
There was a man standing in front of her house with balloons, flowers, and gifts.
“Oh that’s Kai”
Kai?
Is she dating?
Who’s Kai?
Before I could ask her anything she had already closed my door.
“Goodnight. Drive safe” she said.
I could only nod my head.
I drove off but kept my eyes on them through the rear view.
He gave her the flowers and I watched as they were laughing.
Maybe she’s right. We were only meant to be friends..
