Reminiscing
Second time is a charm
Yongsun was having breakfast while watching her best friend talk to their son about future choices regarding studies and other things, and that made her smile.
Moonbyul had always been a trustworthy mother since day one and the black-haired woman felt nostalgic.
Thinking back, that was one of the reasons why she had fallen in love with the other girl. Because of Moonbyul’s tenderness and way of taking care of others.
Yongsun got lost in her thoughts, and things started coming back to her mind. Things that happened almost sixteen years before.
__ x __
Seoul, 2009.
The 18-year-old student was standing on a corner of the school patio, looking at the vast group of people who had been rescued after a violent typhoon, and some volunteers from the neighborhood were helping.
Moonbyul, one year younger than the other student, caressed the shorter girl’s back and asked:
__ What’s up, unnie? Why are you frozen?
Yongsun breathed heavily and responded with sadness:
__ Ah, Byul-yi... It’s so sad... Look at them. So many elders without their sons and daughters. And there are at least 3 babies who lost their parents. I got some clothes and food for them but it isn’t enough... What else can we do?
The younger girl looked around and thought for a while. Then she declared:
__ Let’s ask our colleagues to join us to beg for help from the community. We can all knock on every door to collect whatever people can donate. Maybe the mayor will find a comfortable place for older adults. And some family will adopt the babies. Don’t feel bad, Ddunnie. Everything will be alright.
__ You think so, Byul-yi?
The younger girl smiled brightly:
__ I know so. I am by your side.
Yongsun felt her heart beating fast. Moonbyul would always make her feel happy and excited about things.
One week later, the entire group of students and teachers had worked hard, and all the people who were homeless after the natural disaster got a place to live. Except a baby.
The five-month-old boy was at a local orphanage, but Yongsun couldn’t accept that situation. The girl was even getting depressed.
When Moonbyul dropped by the older girl’s house during the weekend, the black-haired one was crying in bed.
__ Ddun, why are you crying?__ The younger one held the other against her chest.
__ Byul-ah... Nobody picked Jun-su? He is so tiny and fragile... What if he never gets a family?
Moonbyul kissed Yongsun’s head and replied :
__ Let’s be his family then.
__ What do you mean?__ The older one asked with a puzzled expression.
Moonbyul smiled:
__ Well... we can be his mamas.
__ How? Byul-ah... You’re just 17 years old and I am 18. We haven’t finished school yet and we don’t have our own money.__ Yongsun started walking around the room.
