S1-E01

To The Greatest Harmony

Season 1 – Episode 1 – Pilot

Baro Private Academy, Seoul, South Korea

It was no rare view to see bustling students in the corridor before the start of every period. After all, the students in Baro Academy were mostly studious, therefore it was daily occurrence seeing them competitively rushing to classes competing for the front seats. But not for Nayeon. At least not today.

A tacky colorful piece of paper stacked carelessly among equally tacky papers on the bulletin board managed to catch Nayeon’s attention. Don’t get her wrong, Nayeon was very studious, she topped her Math and Chemistry classes. She was your typical boring-straight-A-student, so studying was definitely one of her only two hobbies. But this tacky paper right here... it might be the perfect start of what she always dreamt of. Which then brought us to her second hobby.

Singing.

Singing was her love. Her number one hobby. Her only talent. The only thing that Nayeon always sure she excelled in and would do better than anybody. Well, maybe except for studying. But studying was getting boring anyway. Singing wasn’t.

So of course, this announcement thrilled her more than anything.

Fixing her glasses, she read the words printed on the sheet carefully, ignoring the ugly choice of fonts and colors.

-Vocal Vibrants-

This is it. Her moment to shine. Brightening the world with her golden voice. About time people stop looking down at the nerdy-book-worm that she was and start to appreciate the future pop-star she was going to be. With a satisfied smile, she took out her phone and took a picture of the ugly-looking announcement on the board. She had four days to prepare a jaw-dropping performance. She had to make sure the judges – whoever they might be – would shower her with praise at the end of the performance. Yes, her time has come.

Soccer field, Baro Academy

“Kim Jongin! Stop flirting and get back to practice!” a low-tone voice of a man broke through the noisy atmosphere of evening soccer practice. The man, Park Chanyeol, captain of Baro Knights, Baro Academy soccer club aka the current best high school soccer club in the country, kicked a soccer ball towards Jongin and successfully hit the poor boy’s shoulder.

“Hey!” Jongin snapped his head, looking for the perpetrator of his previous injury, only to divert his eyes when it met with the said culprit. Uh oh. Nobody dared to mess around during practice when Chanyeol was around.

Chanyeol was ready to kick another set of balls when a manly voice interrupting.

“Let him be, Capt. He’s been courting Soojung for almost two months now, but somehow still got rejected of possible dates.” A tall black-haired boy with a practice jersey came approaching with a ball in hand. The boy was handsome, with a charming lopsided grin adorning his perfectly sculpted face.

“Well, not everybody can take a hot cheerleader out in one try. Not everybody is you, Park Jinyoung.” A brown-haired boy with piercing on his left-ear came after Jinyoung and joined the conversation.

“Taehyung is right. Not everybody is you. Not everybody has the courage to approach the hottest and somehow the coldest girl in Baro a.k.a The Kim Freaking Jisoo. Let alone asked her out and got accepted. Damn, you’re one lucky brat!” Chanyeol playfully kicked the ball towards Jinyoung.

“Well, I am a good guy. Every girl loves a good guy.”

“I am a good guy, too. And she didn’t even read my texts!”

“Shut up, Chan. Or I’m going to tell your girlfriend you still moping over your failed attempts at courting my girlfriend.”

“No, you won’t! I swear Jinyoung if you tell Lisa about this.....”

“He won’t, Chan. Dont’t worry. Jisoo will kill him first before he ever manages a simple talk with another girl.” That earned Taehyung a glare from Jinyoung and a mocking laugh from Chanyeol.

“She is scary.” Yeah, Jinyoung admitted. “Anyway, enough chatting guys. I hit Jongin with a ball to chase him back to practice. We shouldn’t be chatting leisurely like this. Nationals is approaching.”

Trust Park Chanyeol to always bring up Nationals in every possible situation. Baro Knights, five times Nationals winner and current reigning champion is the pride of Baro Academy. The soccer club is definitely one of the best high school soccer club in South Korea. And of course, to be the part of the team wasn’t easy. You had to pass a ruthless training camp to be considered as team A, which was the main team that played in competitive matches. Park Chanyeol, the captain of the pack and dependable defender, Kim Taehyung, star-midfielder of the team, and Park Jinyoung, the main striker as well as vice-captain of the club, were some of the team’s key figures.

Being part of the popular club, the members were mostly guaranteed popularity around campus. The student dubbed them as The Knights. Well, mainly because it was the club’s official name, but the team sometimes conceitedly believed they were indeed the Knights of the school, protecting and nurturing the name of Baro Academy. Cringe? Yeah.

“About that... Can I get home earlier today? I have something to take care of.” Taehyung asked unsurely.

“Why? You have a date?” Jinyoung wiggled his eyebrows.

“As if. My older sister is coming back to Seoul. She is still settling down in her new place. I kinda need to help her unpacking.”

“You have a sister?!” Surprised, Jinyoung and Chanyeol chorused together. They’ve known each other for almost two years and not even once Taehyung mentioned about having a sister.

“Yes. She lived abroad since I was a kid. We have a good relationship if that’s what you’re wondering about.” Taehyung rolled his eyes and continued, “I just have no reason to bring her up.”

“Is she pretty? Single? Ready to mingle?”

“That’s it. I’m telling Lisa, you player!”

“Noooo, I’m just kidding!!!”

Kim Jisoo hated it when people interfering with what belonged to her. It was annoying. And she hated it even more when said people didn’t even realize that they, in fact, were being annoying. Just like that girl over there who kept shamelessly flirting with a guy who happened to be her boyfriend in front of cheerleaders’ locker room. Which was also her territory.

Jinyoung. Sweet Jinyoung.

Jisoo knew Jinyoung was amiable even before she started dating the soccer player. But could he be anymore oblivious? That hoe over there was clearly flirting with him. Not with how the blondie kept playfully brushing her fragile locks with a face as red as ripen tomatoes.

And that shy smile. The satan smile in disguise. Damn it, Jisoo couldn’t take it anymore. Call her possessive or territorial. But no one dared messing with her. She was, after all, The Great Kim Jisoo.

And The Great Kim Jisoo was a graceful soul, so she ought to announce her presence with grace.

She walked a pretentious walk towards the unsuspecting duo.

“Babe, I didn’t know you finished earlier?” A sweet intoxicating smile, an arm loop, and a side-eye to the flustered blondie. Back off, you hoe. Jisoo smirk when the blonde’s face becoming a deeper shade of red due to embarrassment. She looked like she about to cry.

The oblivious Jinyoung turned to her direction and gave his famous lopsided grin. One that Jisoo adored so much.

“Yeah, Chanyeol ended the practice earlier. Everybody seemed to be doing something else. So, he just decided to send us home.”

“I’m guessing Coach Ok hasn’t been back yet?”

“Hm. He seemed to really enjoy Venice.”

“Venice is beautiful. We should go there together.” Jisoo smiled that sweet intoxicating smile again, pretending to be oblivious of other’s presence before the girl coughed loudly and gaining Jinyoung’s attention again. .

“Oh! And who is this beautiful girl babe? Do you know her?” So she played her role as sweet queenka Kim Jisoo.

“Uh, didn’t you guys share a class together?”

“We did?”

“Yeah. I attended Art class with you, Jisoo.”

“You did?” Jisoo swore she saw the girl’s face was burning with anger. “Oh I’m sorry! You are Jihyun, right?”

“No, my name is Yebin.” The girl sighed.

“Sorry, Yerin.” Not an ounce of guilt, of course.

“It’s Yebin.”

“Sorry, my bad.” There she went again.

Jinyoung must sense the tense atmosphere between the girls and decided to in, “Jisoo, go change. I’ll take you home.”

Feeling victorious, Jisoo spared the blondie another cynical glance before went back to the cheerleaders’ locker room. Of course not forgetting to mark her territory with a small peck to Jinyoung’s cheek. And out of politeness, she greeted the girl goodbye.

“Okay, babe. Wait for me here. And take care on your way home, Hyemi.” With a toss of a hair, Jisoo strutted and disappeared behind the door.

Gangnam-gu, Seoul

Seoul seemed different these days. Looking down from the 28th floor of her new flat, Taeyeon could vaguely picture her hometown eight years ago. But she was sure, lots were changing. Might be the plenty newly-built skyscrapers scattered across the city. Might be the bustling streets during rush hour which only indicated the growing number of residents. Or might be just her. Maybe, nothing much different about Seoul. It was just her, being too accustomed to the quiet ambiance of Edinburgh. She, after all, had been a semi-permanent resident there since four years ago.

Edinburgh was nice. It was beautiful, calming, and the people are sweet. Frankly speaking, she hated leaving her cozy life in the capital city of Scotland. She loved her posh apartment too much. And she basically married to her old job there. As a high-ranking PR staff in a multinational company, it was safe to say that she was paid very well. Being an English Literature major with almost perfect GPA kinda guaranteed her tons of job offer. And she was a Harvard graduate. Giant companies all over the world practically begged her to work with them. Basically, her life was set as soon as she got her degree.

So, now why was she here again? Why was she letting go of a comfortable walk of life and back to her hometown, which, by the way, she never visited since forever?

Suddenly, a loud voice interrupted her train of thoughts, abruptly breaking the silence of the room and jolted her out of reverie. “Welcome back, Taeng! I’m overjoyed that you accepted my proposal!”

“Damn it, oppa. Can you ring the bell or something? I know you basically my landlord right now, but still, this is my apartment?”

“I wanted to surprise you. You know, welcoming party or something.” Her landlord grinned widely and showed her two plastic bags that he brought along. “I know you missed Korean food. And soju, of course.”

Taeyeon sighed. This man didn’t change at all.

“You didn’t change at all, oppa.” She couldn’t help but smiled. “And yeah, I did miss Korean food.”

“You mean to say that I’m still as handsome after all this time? And you still couldn’t get over your crush on me?” The man said cheekily while swiftly maneuvered the dining room, taking out the content of plastic bags and laid them down on the dining table. Four serving of instant ramyun, two bowls of plastic-wrapped jjajangmyeon, a serving of tteokbokki, two cans of soft drink, and four bottles of soju. Definitely didn’t look like two people meals.

“Shut up. I didn’t have a crush on you.” Taeyeon rolled her eyes and sat down at the dining table, opening a can of soft drink from the plastic bag. The man let out a manly laughed.

“Anyway, I meant what I said earlier. I’m really happy you decided to take on my offer.” He gave Taeyeon a genuine smile and Taeyeon offered hers, too.

“I just hope I didn’t regret any of this.”

“I promise you won’t. We will do our best supporting you. I, personally, will be by your side through everything.”

“You better be. After all, I threw away my luxurious lifestyle in Scotland for what? Teaching hormonal kids how to write proper English sentences?”

“That, and reliving your old dreams.”

“I really hope I didn’t regret this.” She repeated her previous words. But this time with a melancholy look over her face.

“Hey, you have me, okay? You have your mother. And Taehyung, too. That brat grew up well. And you know how much he adores you, right?” Taeyeon chuckled, remembering her mushy baby brother who grew up marvelously to be a cool high-school junior. The last time Taeyeon directly saw her brother was during Christmas three years ago. When he and their mother came to visit Taeyeon who just recently settled down in Edinburgh then. He was barely thirteen and already outgrew her in terms of height. Taeyeon couldn’t help but wonder how much taller he grew since then. Ever since Taehyung attended high school, it was harder for him to follow their mother whenever she visited his sister in Edinburgh, so the best way of communication the siblings had was by FaceTiming each other whenever mutual leisure called.

“And speaking of him, didn’t you say he would come today?”

“Yeah, he said he will come after soccer practice.”

“Oh, it’s one hour from now on. We still have time to eat.”

“You’re not gonna wait for him, oppa?”

“Nah, can’t let my student seeing me being all cozy with his sister.” He gave a wink which Taeyeon responded with a playful gagging sound.

“Hey, I’m serious though! I’m well-respected in school.”

“Aye, Sir!” Taeyeon mock-saluted him. “Remind me to call you Principal Gong from now on.”

“So, there’s a party at Yoongi’s this weekend.” Jinyoung started unsurely, stealing a glance at the raven girl riding shotgun.

“Hm? Yeah, you told me yesterday.”

“I mean, the party is gonna be lit. It was Min Yoongi, you know? He threw the best party.”

“I don’t know, never went to one.”

“Exactly, babe. Fortunately, he will throw one very soon. You are coming, right? I promise you’ll love it.” He offered a weak smile, eyes being hopeful.

“I don’t think I can make it, Jinyoung. I have mock exam on Monday.”

“It’s Biology. You ace Biology. Besides, the party is on Friday night. You’ll still have Saturday and Sunday?”

“I’ll be wasted by the time the party ends. Then, I’m gonna spend the whole Saturday being hungover. Coach Jung demanded an extra practice on Sunday morning. Do you think I have enough time to party?”

Jinyoung sighed. He knew from the very start his attempt was fated to be futile. This was Kim Jisoo. Kim Jisoo didn’t do party. Kim Jisoo preferred the warmth of her blanket while looking at her favorite movies playing on the 98 inch LED TV over rowdy crowds. Kim Jisoo was a known homebody. How she got to be insanely popular with her introverted personality was a mystery. Even for Jinyoung, the boyfriend for five months.

Never mind. Jinyoung knew exactly why Jisoo was worshipped by boys and envied by girls in the school. Well, for starter, Jisoo was breathtaking. Her beauty was out of this world. A perfect mixture of beautiful light brown eyes, sharp nose, and distinctive heart-shaped lips, which created a beautiful harmony over smooth porcelain skin. When she stared at your eyes and smiled so brightly, boom everyone was a goner.

And she was actually smart. Like, real smart. Her grades were up there competing with the school’s resident nerds. And she did all that while captaining arguably the most popular cheerleading team in Seoul.

So, yeah. Even though it was hard to believe that the most popular student in Baro Academy was, in fact, an introvert. It was understandable why Kim Jisoo was treated like some kind of divine being. Jinyoung just felt lucky whenever he was reminded that this girl was actually her girlfriend.

But moment like this was when Jinyoung questioned how could he survived being with her for five months. Jisoo was determined, overtimes stubborn. She got jealous easily, borderline obsessive, and could be controlling at times. And she cared about her image way too much. To the point of faking her affection towards Jinyoung for the sake of looking like the perfect happy couple they supposed to be.

Okay, the last part was merely his hunch. But you couldn’t blame him for thinking like that when the only moment of Jisoo showing affection was when they were in front of other people. During their earlier month together, Jinyoung always respected whenever Jisoo pulled away before things get overly heated. But it was getting worse after that. Jisoo didn’t even grant him a second-base anymore. Only kissing was allowed, even then he could feel that Jisoo’s mind was drifting somewhere else. It was like he kissed a robot with how stiff and repeated her action was.

Call him needy or whatever. But Jinyoung was a man. And a man did have needs.

And now he couldn’t even get a simple date from her girlfriend. When was the last time they hung out together? Probably a month or two ago. Besides spending lunch break in the same table two times a week and going home together whenever their practice ended around the same time, nothing much was going on. They were like close friends who happened to text each other and occasionally made calls.

“Okay, sorry.” So he just gave up.

“Go with that Hyemi girl.” The sarcastic reply got Jinyoung turned his head.

“Hyemi? Who?”

“The girl you talked to earlier.” Here came the unnecessary jealousy again. And the girl’s name was Yebin. God, Jisoo was being annoying.

“Her name is Yebin, not Hyemi. And I talked to her out of courtesy.”

“Out of courtesy when you clearly enjoyed exchanging flirtatious words with her! And her name could be Dalgommie for all I care, it made no difference.”

“I didn’t flirt with her, Jisoo! I am friendly by nature. I thought you, of all people, should’ve known? And there you go again, dismissing people as you wish!” By now Jinyoung had stopped the car and turned his full attention towards Jisoo, unconciously raising his voice. A fight seemed unavoidable.

“For real Jinyoung? You chose her over your own girlfriend?!”

“Goddamn it! I didn’t choose anyone over anyone. You were being unreasonable and I hate it here!”

“Good, I hate you too. Good day.” Those were Jisoo’s last words before she pushed open the door and out of the white sports car. To be honest, Jisoo didn’t want to walk the rest of her way, but she got no choice. She had pride to protect and Jinyoung just trampled over it. So, she walked away from Jinyoung. They were almost there anyway, at least before the arguments started.

A small part of her was hoping that Jinyoung would stop her, apologize, and drive her home as if the fight was a mere illusion. But of course, it didn’t happen.

So with her remaining pride, she strode her way home.

*

“Good morning, Miss. Can I help you?” As soon as she stepped in the lavish Principal’s room, a bespectacled man welcoming her brightly. The man was probably around her age. Taeyeon offered him a small smile.

“Good morning. I’m here to see Principal Gong.”

“Ah, Miss Kim, isn’t it? Mr. Gong was expecting you.”

“Yes, I am.” Taeyeon coudn’t help but gawk at the sumptuous office. The room was designed in modern style, mostly in monochrome. The bright red leather office chair, despite contrasting the color palette, was strangely fitting with the general theme. Looked like Baro Academy was owning up to its reputation as school of privileges. There was no way this furnished room cost less than her annual paycheck multiple by three back in Edinburgh. That’s how luxurious this office was. Extravagant as always, I see.

“Please have a seat, Miss. My name is Lee Hyukjae. I’m Mr. Gong’s secretary.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Lee. My name is Taeyeon. Kim Taeyeon.”

“Likewise, Miss Kim. Mr. Gong is currently in a meeting, but he is finishing up. He will be back in 15 minutes or so. Do you like some coffee with you?”

“Oh? It’s okay, I can come back later.”

“No worry, Miss. You may wait here. So, coffee?”

“Water is okay.”

“Alright, please wait a second.”

Taeyeon thanked him with a smile.

“By the way, Miss.”

“Yeah?”

“You are really pretty. Hehehe.”

*

Dining hall during lunch period was equal to fish pond during harvest season. Busy and crowded. Nonetheless, people still cleared the way for when the popular trio sauntered to grab their lunch.

Kim Jisoo. Jung Soojung. Kang Seulgi.

The three most popular members of The Queens. National-winning cheerleading club of Baro Academy. Kim Jisoo, the unofficial leader of the trio, as well as the official captain of The Queens. The girl was very pretty but her attitude was something else. Soojung was worse than her. Well, Soojung actually the worst. Nayeon thought Soojung couldn’t talk without throwing profanities here and there. And Seulgi was the better one, from what she heard Seulgi was quiet friendly. But she was all buddy with Jisoo and Soojung, so she couldn’t be that good either.

Nevertheless, Nayeon didn’t like them. Well, she didn’t like the popular crew in general. They were no more than spoiled brats who happened to be exceptionally attractive. They were annoying because they knew they were popular. And like the spoiled brats they were, those ignorant people loved to bully individuals they thought lesser of. Especially people like Nayeon. A loner and nerdy student like Nayeon.

But Nayeon thought Jinyoung was different. The soccer star was sweet and kind to everyone. He befriended and treated every student just the same. To top it off, Jinyoung was definitely a looker. He was too good that Nayeon couldn’t help but harboring a massive crush on him.

It was a pity though, that a perfect person like Jinyoung actually dated the spoiled brat Kim Jisoo. If Jinyoung had a flaw, it was surely his questionable taste in woman. But Kim Jisoo was still Kim Jisoo. She was too popular and actually influential. Nayeon didn’t need another trouble with the crew.

So, the only way for her to satisfy her blooming crush was by admiring him from afar. Just like today. Jinyoung was supposed to sit on the jocks’ table by now. Well, with Jisoo. But we should ignore that.

By now, Nayeon has almost memorized Jinyoung’s timetable. She knew that out of five weekdays, Jinyoung and Jisoo would share two lunch period together in a week. Thanks to their apparently clashing schedule. And today was one of those cursed days.

But she saw no pieces of Jinyoung in sight. Instead, it just Jisoo and her two sidekicks, plus some other cheerleaders and jocks. Maybe Jinyoung was still finishing up his class? Jinyoung seemed like a studious person, after all.

A low voice broke Nayeon out of her reverie.

“I’m sorry, it looked like there are no more empty seats around the hall. Do you mind if I and my friend sit here?”

For God’s sake.

Nayeon wanted to faint. She couldn’t believe her eyes.

Was that really Park Jinyoung talking to her? The Soccer Star Park Jinyoung? The Mr. Perfect Park Jinyoug? Her crush Park Jinyoung? Well, not necessarily Jinyoung. It was more Kim Taehyung, her crush’ best buddy, with Jinyoung beside him looking sad but hopeful at the same time. But it meant the same, right?

She was at loss for words. So she tried to nod. It didn’t came out well apparently, as Taehyung rose a brow in confusion.

“YES OH GOD YES. No, I’m sorry... I mean, yes. You and your friend could definitely sit here. I was alone after all.” Good Nayeon, now your crush and his buddy would think you were crazy. What if they feel weirded out and drop the plan to eat with you?

“Oh. Cool, then. Thank you.” Thankfully they didn’t as Taehyung answered and proceeded to sit across her with Jinyoung on his right side.

“Why aren’t you sitting with your crew?” Damn it, just decided to run itself without thinking again. They might feel uncomfortable, you fool.

“Ah... you know, couple fight.” Taehyung answered with a smirk and sending a subtle glance towards Jinyoung’s direction.

“Dude, I thought we agreed not to talk about this.”

“Oh, I’m sorry I asked. I was just curious.” Nayeon tried to make up for her sloppy tongue. Jinyoung seemed down and she didn’t like it.

“It’s fine.” Jinyoung gave a sad smile.

Wow. The Park Jinyoung was smiling at her. What did Nayeon do to deserve this? And, did Jinyoung and Jisoo fight? Double wow. Maybe Jinyoung finally realized what a of a woman Jisoo actually was.

Nayeon wanted to dig more. But again, this was her and Jinyoung first ever words exchange. Nayeon didn’t want to spoil it. So she decided to keep mum and finish her lunch quietly. She was already content sharing the same table as her crush.

There would surely be another time to ask.

Nayeon hoped so.

*

“So, you graduated from Harvard?”

“I did.”

“Wow you were brilliant!”

“Thanks, Miss Hwang.”

“What’s with the formality? Just call me Tiffany, okay? We are friends now.”

Well, Taeyeon didn’t think they could be considered friends yet since it was only 20 minutes or so since she made aware of Tiffany’s existence. This red-head thought otherwise though. From the moment Principal Gong introduced her to fellow teachers, she was basically glued to Taeyeon’s side, asking and pestering her with multiple questions. Which by the way, Principal Gong had mostly briefed the answers of during her short introductory moment.

“Okay, Tiffany.” But she thought it might be good to make quick friends on your first day of work. Besides, Tiffany looked genuinely interested about her. She was a bit noisy, but she seemed nice.

“This is the music room. The old glee club used to practice here.” They stopped in front of closed double doors. The doors made from black oak, looked sturdy and lavish at the same time. Principal Gong opened the door and led the small crowd inside.

Yes, they were doing some kind of tour right now. Yoo oppa—Principal Gong was adamant about taking her around the school by himself. So here she was, together with Principal Gong, his weird secretary, and Miss Tiffany Hwang who volunteered to tag along (because she wanted to get closer to her new friend, Tiffany said), entering the magnificent space called music room.

Elegant. The music room was elegant. It was not too large, just big enough. Decorated mostly in red and gold, giving it an expensive touch. As expected of Baro Academy.

Suddenly, a soft melody reverberated through the space, taking her full attention away. Pachelbel’s Canon in D. The very first piece she played with the cheap keyboard piano she bought with her own money. Listening to it always brought her to tears. Weird, because people rarely associated this composition with a sad vibe, since it was played at weddings often.

Maybe it was the memories. The sad reminiscence of her past. The unpleasant thing she unconsciously associated with this piece.

Taeyeon let herself lost in the alluring sound of piano. Shutting out her surroundings, it was only her and pieces of her past. For a moment, she forgot where she was. Her vision started to blur. And she let them down. Her tears.

And Taeyeon cried.
