Chapter Seven

Smile

Daehyun sat on the couch in the living room, his arms crossed with one leg crossed over the other. He stared at his phone, which laid across the coffee table in front of him. Young Jae floated around, unsure of what to do.

"Euijin still hasn't texted me their location. probably forgot, again," Daehyun said.

"Should we scout out the facility in the meantime?" Young Jae asked.

Daehyun thought for a moment before he nodded. He went over to Euijin's computer and searched for the address before he made his way out of the room.

"This'll give me time to follow up on my resume," Daehyun said.

"So you'll get hired right away?" Young Jae asked.

"No. Usually we wait a month and if they haven't responded by then, you're pretty much rejected. But I can easily pull a few strings since my former colleague works for this guy," Daehyun said.

He stepped out of Euijin's apartment and made his way down the hallway. The second he pressed the button to call the elevator, the elevator doors opened and as he stepped inside, he made eye contact with a woman already within. Luckily, the first floor button had already been pressed.

"So if you ask your former colleagues, they can get you in for sure?" Young Jae asked.

Instead of an answer, Young Jae was met with silence. He moved in front of Daehyun and waved his hand in front of Daehyun's face. No response.

"Are you ignoring me?" Young Jae asked.

Daehyun pulled out his cellphone and briefly glanced over at the woman, whom was currently on her phone. He simply raised the phone up to his ear and cleared his throat.

"Hello? Yeah, what do you need?" Daehyun asked.

"What? Who're you calling?" Young Jae asked.

"Yeah. If I ask them, they can get me in. It shouldn't be a problem since they owe me anyway," Daehyun said.

It took him a moment, but he was able to understand what Daehyun was doing when silence ensued. Of course, before he could ask anything else, the elevator stopped on the first floor. When the doors opened, Daehyun motioned for the woman to leave first before he left after her. When there was enough space between him and the woman, Daehyun put his phone away.

"Let's hurry. The sooner we see what kind of place this is, the better," Daehyun said.

"Oh shi-" Euijin managed to say as he jumped out of the way of the furniture's flight path.

He crashed into the nearby cabinet as the table shattered into pieces the second it collided with the wall. He stared at the spot he had been at for a brief moment before he looked back at the ghost. He gasped as he scrambled to push himself back to his previous spot, just narrowly in time as a chair collided against the floor he had been sprawled out along.

"Hey hey hey! There's no need for this!" Euijin said as he rushed up to his feet and said, "Mina! What did your great-grandfather do?"

"He uh-" Mina was cut off as another piece of furniture flew passed her.

"Mina!" Euijin yelled as he jumped to the side yet again.

The power of his voice sent both Mina and the ghost out of the room. The atmosphere immediately lightened and the piece of furniture that had been lifted fell back down. Euijin examined the area carefully as he made his way to the door. With a quick turn of the doorknob and a push, the door opened easily. He let out a relieved sigh and stepped out of the room.

Out in the hallway, Euijin immediately noticed a lack of spirits in the immediate area. He silently cursed as he ran down the hallway, the folder safe in his arms.

"Oh, this isn't good. This isn't good at all," Euijin mumbled.

"Euijin!" Mina exclaimed as she caught up to Euijin and continued, "What was that? What did you do?"

"Mediums have abilities that help them combat aggressive spirits, but you were there, so I was trying really hard not to use it and now, I'm pretty sure the entire hospitals knows I'm here, so we need to get out of here, now," Euijin said as quickly as he could.

"So the- wait!" Mina said as she came to a sudden stop.

Euijin had already made it halfway down the steps before he turned back to Mina, who remained at the top. Her eyes were on the ground, a look of concern on her face.

"What is it? We gotta go!" Euijin said.

"There's something on the stairs, can't you see it?" Mina asked.

"What are you talking about?" Euijin said as he quickly examined the stairs.

"I don't think I can get through here," Mina said.

"You can just float down, right?" Euijin said.

Mina nodded, but instead of passing through the floor, she remained in place. Panic spread through her being as she ran over to the window and tried to phase through the wall. Nothing.

"It's not working, Euijin! What's going on?" Mina cried.

Euijin made his way back up to Mina. He had glanced to either side, but he took a second look to the right. Not only did the spirits of the hospital make their way towards them, the spirit from earlier led them and based off the glass that shattered as they passed, they weren't happy. He turned back to Mina, who now faced him.

"Mina, we have to go. Do you know the layout of the hospital?" Euijin asked.

"Um, y-yes. I know it," Mina said.

"Since I can't see what you see, you'll have to lead the way. There has to be a way out for you too," Euijin said.

Mina nodded as she started down the opposite end of the hallway. Euijin followed closely as he glanced over his shoulder every now and then, his eyes constantly locking with the lead spirit. They turned the corner and hurried down the hallway. Cracks formed along the walls, floors, and ceilings, but that didn't stop them from moving faster.

"There! Those steps aren't blocked!" Mina exclaimed.

They approached the stairs and quickly descended them. Mina screamed and jumped forward before she came to a stop at the bottom of the stairs. Euijin stopped next to her and quickly examined her.

"Are you okay? What happened?" Euijin asked.

"The thing I saw before started forming in front of me!" Mina said.

"You're okay though, right? We can think about it while we're running!" Euijin said as they ran once more.

"So, this is the main building," Daehyun mumbled to himself.

The lobby was tall with a dome-like ceiling. A painting that imitated Ancient Greek paintings filled the dome's surface. In between each painting, beams with intricate gold embellishments formed up to the center, which housed a grand chandelier with crystal-like gems hanging off of it.

Below the start of the ceiling, there was a ledge which housed the majority of the lights that illuminated the lobby. The lobby itself continued to hold the same beams with intricate golden embellishments along the walls with the walls themselves being a mahogany color. Greek themed furniture filled the lobby, which almost made it seem more like a hotel as opposed to a research facility.

"It's clear that their main objective is money," Daehyun mumbled to himself yet again.

"Sir, I believe you're in the wrong building," a voice from Daehyun's side said.

Daehyun turned to his right to see a man, probably in his forties, stare at him. The man wore a lab coat and round glasses that didn't seem to suit his facial structure much. Despite his attempt at being passive-aggressive, the man clearly looked down on him.

Maybe it was the hoodie.

"Is this not the M. Research Medical Corporation?" Daehyun asked.

"And why would someone of your," the man paused as he looked Daehyun up and down, "stature, wish to be looking for such a prestigious company?"

"I believe that my business with such a prestigious company is none of your concern," Daehyun said as he started for the receptionist's desk.

The man, however, quickly slid in front of Daehyun's way and said, "I suggest you leave before I call security."

"I suggest you get out of my way before I-" Daehyun managed to say before a woman's voice interrupted them.

"Daehyun? Is that you?"

Daehyun turned towards the source of the voice. A woman stood with her hands in her lab coat pockets. She wore no makeup and her hair was held up in a ponytail. Under her coat, she wore a white shirt over a pair of beige pants and white non-slip shoes.

"Ah, Seohyun. It's good to see you again," Daehyun said.

"How preposterous! You can't possibly know-" he was cut off when Seohyun approached them.

"What's going on?" Seohyun asked.

"This man is rude as hell. What's with him?" Daehyun asked.

"No, that's-" the man started, but he was cut off the second Seohyun glared at him.

"We'll speak about this later. Leave," Seohyun said sternly.

The man attempted to say something in defense, but all he could do was sigh and glare at Daehyun as he walked away. With him gone, Daehyun smiled at Seohyun, who also couldn't help but smile in turn.

"Daehyun! I can't believe it! How've you been?" Seohyun said as she pulled Daehyun into a hug.

"I've been better. How about you? Myungsoo still picking on you?" Daehyun asked.

As they pulled away, Seohyun smiled as she nodded and said, "He's the same as always. I've been good though. I managed to become a team lead here."

"Wow. You don't waste time, do you?" Daehyun said.

"Nope. Gotta make it to the top somehow. But what brings you here?" Seohyun asked.

Daehyun shrugged and stuffed his hands into his jeans pockets as he said, "I'm looking for a job. You hiring?"

Seohyun gasped and nodded as she said, "For you? Of course! We'd gladly take you in, but what made you wanna come back to doing research?"

Daehyun glanced downward as he forced himself to smile and said, "I guess it was time to start again."

"Great! So when can you start?" Seohyun asked.

"How about now?" Daehyun asked.

Seohyun laughed for a bit, but when Daehyun didn't laugh in turn, Seohyun's eyes widened as she said, "Wait. Really?"

"Yeah, really," Daehyun replied.

"Hm, well, I might be able to do something. Follow me," Seohyun said.

As Seohyun and Daehyun continued their conversation while they made their way to the elevators, Young Jae stared at the man from earlier as he emerged from the office. Young Jae's eyes emitted it's soft blue light and through his vision, he could see the dark aura that surrounded the man. In fact, several people here had that same dark aura.

"A demon's influence is strong here," Young Jae mumbled to himself.

Immediately, his gaze shot upwards and he made eye contact with a being whom stood along the ledge. The being smirked at him as he disappeared into the wall behind him.

"That confirms my suspicions," Young Jae said before he followed after Daehyun and Seohyun.

Chapter 9: Oooh, all the angel hierarchy stuff is really interesting! I just figured Youngjae saved Daehyun because of the “angels gotta help” idea. Given that youngjae doesn’t remember, does that mean he’ll end up remembering throughout the course of the story, or is it something that will always remain a mystery?
