Run

That was his only thought, replaying in Kyungsoo’s head over and over like a broken record. The young omega didn’t allow himself to think of anything else. First of all, he didn’t want to be distracted. There were no words that would describe how badly Kyungsoo wanted to get away from that place, his home or better, his prison... With that thought, he left everything behind; his past, his pain and his life.

Secondly, with his mind set on that one simple goal, it helped him to stay focused. Nothing could wreck him anymore, nothing could hurt him or wound him as deeply as what he had just left behind. With every shuddering breath he took, with fall and raise of his blistered feet, he became a new person, new Kyungsoo. Someone who deserved to be free and live his life the way he pleases.

The omega had no knowledge of how far he had gotten away from his pack at this point. He might be running for hours and he might be running for days. The only thing he knew was that it still wasn’t enough. He promised himself he would run until his body breaks and he would crawl until his hands bleed. He won’t give up until his last breath.

Kyungsoo’s determination was bulletproof. He was not going to waver until he’s sure that man who he had left will never lay his filthy hands on him nor the secret Kyungsoo took away with him.

Jongin watched the burning fire with unwavering gaze, an opened book hanging loosely in his calloused hands, the fragrant scent of lilies filling the room. He had been trying to read one page for at least twenty minutes now before he finally realized he wasn’t getting anywhere. He stared at the crackling flames that casted shadows over his sullen face.

The alpha was worried. It was the third time this week he had found footprints of another wolf roaming this area. First time this incident had occurred was on Monday early morning. Jongin had been on his way to the mountains as usual, walking up the steep hill with vigor that he rarely felt in his body. It was because this time, he was on a hunt, and he had always taken that duty very seriously. Living alone came with a price and if Jongin was not careful enough it could cost him life. Having a large amount of supplies stacked up in his cabin was one of the signs of his carefulness.

Hope for the best.

Prepare for the worst.

Jongin’s father always told him.

Wise man, he was, for sure.

Food was the key to surviving in the wilderness, especially if you choose to live through the gloomy days of your life alone, like Jongin had chosen long time ago. The alpha, still fairly young, had learned that the hard way. You shall never know when the weather will turn against you, when the mother nature will force you to leave your own settlement. The only thing that was sure was that there’s never going to be someone around.

No one will give you a roof over your head. There is not going to be a kind stranger to lend you a helping hand on the days you are starving to death. No, you were in all of this by yourself and while for many, that was unimaginable, for Jongin, it was his life and he wouldn’t trade it for anything else. But as he said, he had to be carefull. He had to be wise and able to predict things humans weren’t able to. Moreover, Jongin had to be aware.

Aware of changes that could potentially harm him.

One of these changes might be those small footprints of wolf paws, aiming deeper into the mountains. As said earlier, the first time he noticed them was on Monday morning. They had been engraved deep in the thick layer of snow, tiny but still visible to Jongin’s sharp eyes. It was not for the sole fact that another animal dared to cross his territory. It was the knowledge of another wolf shamelessly wandering around that made Jongin’s forehead crease in worry. Wolves were proud and rule-abiding creatures. They rarely moved in groups, preferring permanent settlements and living in large packs, and they even more rarely moved alone.

This wolf, right here, was either in too much hurry to notice Jongin’s musky scent marking the large trees or he didn’t give a at all. Neither of that was a good sign.

His assumptions were confirmed when two days after that incident, he had spotted those footprints again. This time, they were leading down the hills, backing away from the shadow of the dangerous mountains. The alpha was sure the wolf was injured. The steps were uneven and here and there he found specks of blood. The wolf must have passed here the night before because the blood was already dried and dark, carrying no scent to it. An alpha, maybe a beta by Jongin’s blind guess. No omega could stay alive for so long, alone.

Third time it had happened, was last night. Jongin had been sitting on the deck of his cabin, skinning the deer he had caught a few days ago. The deer skin was soft, light to wear and thus one of the best for making clothes. The alpha did not obtain any kind of spectacular skills in this field but on the other hand, there was no one here to judge his terrible sewing or holes in his clothes.

As he had sat there, the strong winter wind blew through the open wind, bringing in a whiff of something familiar. The alpha had tensed, halting his work to sniff the air for confirmation.

Blood.

The though crossed his mind naturally and before he knew what he was doing, Jonign had bolted out of his seat, letting his long legs rush after the disturbing scent. It was not just the smell of blood, it was the scent that certainly belonged to another wolf that got him running like a mad man towards the source.

When he had reached the place, he found nothing but red splotches of the ruby liquid in the snow, marring the clean beauty of the nature of his surroundings. Jongin had sighed, kneeling down as he had gently ran his finger tips over the red marks and brought them to his nose. The alpha leaned back in surprise upon noticing the sweet scent it carried. It was unmistakably an omega’s blood and by the sheer amount that was spilled around this place, the wolf was critically injured.

Jongin had stood up and left the place without looking back.

Omegas meant troubles.

Troubles were nothing for Jongin.

A day had passed, and Jongin was sitting on his couch, his gaze hard and unfocused as he stared into the burning flames of the grate. He was wondering if the omega was still alive. The alpha hoped that was not the case.

Omegas never, never, wandered alone. The omega’s mate must have been close and it let Jongin briefly wonder over how incapable this alpha was for letting his own omega get hurt. That was one of the reasons why Jongin had never found himself a mate. First of all, he wasn’t a family oriented man and secondly, he couldn’t bear the burden of the fact that there was someone, a mate, that depended with his life on whether Jongin was or wasn’t able to protect him.

He was so deeply immersed in his thoughts that his ears almost missed the low thud coming from outside. The alpha stood up, slipping out of his handmade slippers to lessen the loud cracking noises of the wooden floor. He walked towards the door as quietly as a wolf can do and popped them open just enough to see outside.

The night was dark, only the dull shining of the moon over the star-strewn sky lighting the usually pitch black forest. He heard another thud and this time he was sure it came from behind his cabin. Still, barefoot, he walked outside, his eyes flicking bright yellow and then back to normal as he smelled the source of the persistent thudding. Jongin’s eyes narrowed.

After so long, that wolf is still out there?

He marched around his cabin, ready to finally teach a lesson to the intruder but his resolution left him as soon as he saw him.

It was a boy, and by Jongin’s humble guess, he was much younger than the alpha. He laid in the snow, curled into a ball with his back facing the wooden wall of Jongin’s cabin. Pool of blood surrounded his slim body and it surprised the alpha that he was still breathing, judging from the shallow raising and falling of his shoulders.

The alpha scanned his surroundings but oddly enough he wasn’t able to pick up on any unfamiliar scent. Jongin pressed his lips into a thin line and kneeled beside him. He reached out to touch his shoulder, tapping it gently. The boy shuddered.

Indeed an omega, Jongin thought and sighed deeply. He turned to look around one last time before he scooped the trembling body up, feeling the muscles in his arms strain as he carried to boy inside. Kicking the door closed, he settled the omega down on his bed and covered his lover body with an old pelt, trying his best not to stare, thinking the boy might feel uncomfortable if he woke up stark on a stranger's bed.

Jongin couldn’t help but notice how pale the younger was. From his cheeks and chapped lips down to his narrow shoulders and small chest, his body was void of color, skin ghastly pallid, stretched over his ribs so tightly it looked like it might tear any moment. His neck was bleeding, as he dared to judge from the tightly clumped piece of cloth that was wrapped around his neck.

Jongin unwrapped it and frowned at the amount of blood that gushed out of the wound. The injury was not quite as serious as he orginallly thought but it was bleeding a lot  and Jongin had a few ideas from what it might be, one worse than the other. He swiftly walked over to his cabinet and pulled out an old, dusty box with a red cross on top of it.

Sitting back next to the omega, he cleaned and disinfected the wound, listening the the boy’s soft whimpers every time he touched his neck. He put a sterile gauze over the wound and secured it in place. When he was done he warmed a bucket of cold water and put a baby blue towel inside, letting it drench thoroughly. He then proceeded to clean the omega’s upper body. He focused on the frail arms and his chest that was still stained with trails of blood. The alpha didn’t dare to go lower than the curve of his waist, the rest was covered under thick, furry pelt.

He watched the boy breathe, his eyes following the rising and falling of his chest and he heard himself sighing again. Once again, he walked over to a different cabinet and opened it. Dust flew over the room and Jongin caughed. There in front of him, were couple of old blankets, abandoned by the previous - human - owners of the cabin. Jongin thought he might never use them but today might be the day. He pulled out a particularly thick one in a disgustingly neon green color and carried it over to the sleeping boy. He switched the scratchy pelt for the smooth blanket and pulled it all the way up to the omega’s shoulders, making sure he’s going to stay warm overnight. Then he took just as brightly colored pillow and carefully lifted his head up to place it under..

The boy scooted closer to him, trying to nuzzle his cheek against Jongins’ hand, subsconciously searching for warmth and sense of protection that only an alpha could give him. Jongin quickly retracted his hand.

Satisfied, he watched as the omega snuggled into the warmth.

With heavy heart, he himself settled in his old rocking chair, watching the boy from afar until his almond eyes closed and he drifted to dreamland as well.

Warmth.

Everything Kyungsoo felt was warmth. Wherever he was, it was a cozy place that made him feel safe and sound. Kyungsoo liked it, he hadn’t felt that way for a very long time and not to mention the pleasant smell of flowers that surrounded him. He curled into a ball and nuzzled against the soft material under his cheek, small smile making its way to his lips as he brushed his fingers over his tummy.

Just as the tips ghosted over the small bump, his eyes fluttered open and Kyungsoo blinked rapidly, getting used to the bright light invading the unfamiliar room. Pulling the funny colored blankets up to his chin, he scanned the place with his big, round eyes.

He had no idea where he was. The room he was in was spacious, there were no doors except the entrance; the kitchen and living room connected to the bedroom. It looked more like one huge room that had everything. Table and chairs, old kitchen counter, fridge, rusty stove, fireplace, and many more. Right ahead of him was a long, floral curtain of floor length and Kyungsoo was sure that behind it was bathroom. The place looked disorganized and messy, yet home-like.

It must be a human settlement.

Just the thought made Kyungsoo's insides clench. Humans. He couldn't possibly had wandered that far away, right? If there was anything worse than what awaited him back in his pack, it was getting into hands of a human.

Kyungsoo propped himself up and groaned. His head was spinning. Reaching out, he blindly touched his neck to find a thick bandage.

"I see you’re up."

The omega’s eyes widened. He hadn’t even noticed a man entering the cabin, yet, there he stood right in front of him in his whole glory. He was tall with wide shoulders and muscular arms. His eyes were of the shape of an almond and his lips looked plush and soft. His hair was blonde, complimenting his golden skin tone that was quite rare to see in this kind of climate. Kyungsoo himself was literally a color of a sheet of paper.

An alpha.

Kyungsoo was sure of that. The typical earthy musky scent hiting him like a brick wall and cowered, scooting towards the headboard and eying the alpha warily. The omega his lips nervously, staring at the alpha without moving, a sense of naturally inherited respect for the man spreading through his body.

"I didn’t touch you." The alpha said curtly and Kyungsoo’s forehead creased in confusion.

The blonde haired man cleared his throat awkwardly. "I mean... When I found you you were injured, uhm, and . I brought you in and treated your wound but beside that I haven’t touched your body. I thought you should know that." He nodded more to himself than to Kyungsoo and put the basket full of small wooden logs on the floor.

It took Kyungsoo a moment to understood what the alpha had meant and he blushed when he finally did.

"Thank you," He blurted out, his voice hoarse. "Thank you for helping me and for not taking advantage of me."

"I found some old clothes from the previous owners. I think they might suit you better than mine. Dress yourself and then we’ll talk." The alpha said and pointed at the pile of clothes on the chair next to his bed.

Kyungsoo mumbled a shy thank you and pulled the clean shirt over his head. He noticed the alpha turned around to give him privacy. He quickly put on his pants and then stumbled towards the table. The tall wolf was quick to grab him by his forearm, guiding him into his seat.

"Maybe you should have stayed in bed, you lost a lot of blood." The alpha grumbled and again, Kyungsoo felt like he was speaking to himself. He couldn’t help but smile.

"I’m okay." He answered and the alpha looked at him startled, obviously not expecting him to answer. He turned back to the stove and few minutes later he handed Kyungsoo a bowl full of greenish liquid. The smell was mouthwatering.

"I thought you might welcome something warm. It’s an instant soup and it had been here for ages but I hope it’s still edible."

Kyungsoo smiled brightly at him after tasting the soup. "It’s good, thank you."

They ate in silence. The alpha gave him a look here and there but it was obvious he wanted Kyungsoo to regain a bit of his energy back before asking him about what had happened to the omega. Eventually, the time of the dreaded questions came.

"So... Are you going to tell me what happened to you?" The alpha fixed his almond eyes on Kyungsoo’s slightly fidgety form, intertwining his fingers as he rested his elbows on the table. Kyungsoo couldn’t help but notice his hands were large and calloused, probably an outcome of years of hard work.

"Uhm... I got lost..." Kyungsoo said simply, his words cutting through the air like a knife. The alpha said nothing and Kyungsoo felt beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "I was with my friend, an alpha, when we got attacked by human hunters. He told me to run and since then I’ve been wandering around, looking for a place where I could stay and wait for him."

"And that wound?" The alpha asked sternly.

"I got it while I was trying to escape." Kyungsoo said, his hands trembling under the table.

The alpha nodded understandingly, taking a few more slurps from his bowl. "What do you want to do?"

"I, I was wondering if I could stay here for a few days, I’m sure my friend will come and get me." Kyungsoo answered, trying to sound confident. The alpha said nothing, staring at the table before giving him another curt nod and stood up with a screeching of the chair against the wooden floor.

"Does that mean, I can stay?" Kyungsoo blurted out, shooting up from his chair, his head dizzy at the abrupt movement. The alpha was by his side in a blink, pressing his body against Kyungsoo’s in a try to keep him upright and right then, as Kyungsoo naturally wrapped his arms around his neck and pressed his upper body against the alpha’s for the much seeked protection, he realized his mistake.

It was too late, however. The alpha's face lit up in surprise and then quickly flipped to disappointment and then finally, to rage. His hand traveled down to Kyungsoo’s stomach to feel the slight bulge. He laughed bitterly.

"You’re carrying a child." He said lowly, almost growling at the omega as he grabbed him by shoulders and pushed him away. Kyungsoo's body was trembling in fear under the hard gaze the alpha gave him.

"Get out!" The alpha barked and Kyungsoo’s mouth opened in an attempt to protest but before he could say something, the alpha was already pushing him out of the door. Kyungsoo could only stare at the way the alpha’s face screwed up in anger as he slammed the door right in front of Kyungsoo’s face.

"Wait, please! Let me explain!" Kyungsoo cried out desperately, one hand hovering protectively over his belly while he pressed the other against the smooth surface of the door.

The omega knew it was his fault. He should have said the truth. Now the alpha was left with impression that he was liar and potentially dangerous. But how could he? How could he tell the man his story without worrying he would get kicked out or worst, dragged back to his pack?

The omega bit his lower lip harshly, drawing blood. His mind reeling in concentration as he thought of what to say to make things better.

"There’s nothing to explain. No alpha leaves a pregnant omega running around the woods for a week." Jongin snarled, his voice muted by the thick wooden door.

Kyungsoo leaned his forehead against the door, feeling the pent up frustration. He banged on the door, calling for the alpha to let him in and give him a chance to explain but the man was stubborn as hell. On the other hand, Kyungsoo couldn’t blame him. He slid down on the floor and sobbed quietly.

He was so screwed.

He just landed a chance for him and his baby to be safe for a few days and he managed to up in less than five minutes.

"My mate claimed me w-when I was very young." He started off very hesitantly, not even sure if the alpha could hear him. "It was b-before my first heat started. He was a g-good man, though." Kyungsoo gritted through his teeth, the image of his mate vivid inside his head. "He cared for me and cherished me. An alpha that is rarely seen these days. H-he always put my needs o-over his. Four months ago, he went on a hunt."

Kyungsoo took in a shuddering breath and continued, wiping his tears with the back of his trembling hand. "He didn’t come back. His body was found two weeks later. I was heartbroken. I lost my m-mate but I didn’t know the w-worst was only coming. W-when I found out I was pregnant with his child I lost it. I n-never had anyone else to stood up for me except for him. When his m-mother found out she p-pointed out it would not be wise to keep the baby. So I ran away, I w-was too scared that one day I would wake up in a stranger’s car on the way to the city to abort my baby."

"I’ve been on my own for a few weeks now. But a week ago I crossed the way of hunters. I barely managed to escape. I was delirious, wandering around aimlessly, loosing blood and hoping to die but then you appeared. When I woke up this morning I thought I might be able to convince you to let me stay here."

"I’m really sorry for lying... I should have told you the truth from the beginning but I was scared, you’re a stranger too, after all." Kyungsoo said wearily, feeling disgusted by how easily he came up with such a elaborate lie.

But there was still no response and Kyungsoo cried harder, trying to keep his sobs and hiccups as quiet as possible. He didn’t want appear more pathetic than he already did.

"I... I just need a place to stay until I give birth to this little one. Then I will leave, I promise. I won’t bother you anymore." Kyungsoo wailed silently, his back resting against the door.

Still no sound from inside, Kyungsoo sighed dejectedly, deciding it was his time to go. Maybe he could go to one of those human cities and try his luck there? It was a scary idea but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he didn’t really have any other option.  It was then, when he heard a light click and the door opened. He stood up, his cheeks blotchy and wet, lips quivering as he stared back into that stern face of the young alpha.

"How far along are you?" He asked, rubbing his forehead in frustration.

"I think I’m around fifth month." Kyungsoo said honestly.

"You’re small for a fifth month. Last night I haven’t noticed at all. If I did I would have left you outside." The alpha sta

Chapter 4: Just wanted to leave a comment and say how nice this story is :).
I've been on AFF a long (loooog) time (almost 10 yrs) and I stopped commenting much after a while so this is literally my first comment in probably 3, 4 years.
I really liked both of their characters and the progress of the relationship and how they were each other's savior :)
I just realized you also wrote Clash of the worlds; both are good fics and nicely written ^^
