“sinb-yah!”

before sinb could turn around to see, a flash of shadow wrapped its hand around her arm, successfully trapping the body part in its own limb.

“ah! eunha-unnie, please stop jumping out from nowhere, i still wanna live!”

“despite your cool personality, you still get scared so easily,” said eunha pouted, clearly not amused.

“it’s called reversal charm!”

“right, you said that for a thousand times already!” eunha released sinb’s arm from her death grip and cutely hopped beside her. “are you free today? let’s go to karaoke together!”

“karaoke? why so suddenly?” as sinb begun to walk towards the campus with eunha following closely beside, they started to chat.

“well, this friend and i decided to catch up with each other a bit since we haven’t talked in a while and we chose karaoke as our hangout place! you gotta come, just the two of us aren’t fun!” eunha whined, trying to coax sinb into joining them with her cuteness.

“who is this friend? why karaoke specifically? you know i can’t sing, unlike you.”

(sinb remembered the last time she attempted to sing, her classmate looked truly traumatized from her marvelous vocal and the windows were shaking under the pressure of her volume.

she knew that she was horrible at singing, you couldn’t blame it on her. the preparatory school required every freshman to take choir class, so it’s wasn’t her fault.

from that moment on, she was banned from singing in the choir class because the vocal teacher deemed she was hopeless. “hwang eunbi-ssi, please refrain from singing for the sake of our ears from now on, thank you,” the schoolteacher had said.

that was probably why sinb is always hesitant to sing when asked to.)

“this friend is choi yuna, she’s from my vocal class. i don’t want you to know how to sing, i just wanna have fun!”

“alright, fine. you gotta be grateful that dance class is cancelled on wednesday!”

“yay! class is starting soon, see you at the main gate after school, bye!” hastily, eunha ran off, leaving sinb standing alone on the walkway.

the dancer could only sigh. there was still 20 minutes left ‘till class really does start, what was she rushing for?

******

the time was already one in the afternoon after school. as promised, sinb leaned against the brick walls of her college, swiping through her phone in an unamused manner as she waited for her friend.

to be honest, sinb hated waiting people, she was too impatient for that matter, but she had never told people about that, no one needed to know.

(it was because her reputation was on line here, she had made her name friendly around the campus, she didn’t want people to think badly of her.)

however it has been 10 minutes since sinb had been duly scrolling through the device in her hand without the short haired female anywhere in sight and the dancer has started to take guesses.

the building and its surrounding area were nearly empty, most of the students had either returned back to their dorm or left the school.

maybe she didn’t see sinb and went out ahead first, maybe she had emergency situation to be taken care of right now, maybe she had already forgotten about the promise.

or perhaps it was that professor of hers. that professor, who is probably the most hated human being in the college.

mr. park was known as the human risen from hell throughout the whole phrontistery, even the school faculty was (a tad bit) scared witless by him. not only his lessons make you feel like you’re in a soldier in military training, his ear-splitting volume can actually make you jump in terror during lectures, or moreover can get you stone deaf.

(sinb still remembered mr. park, the first impression of the male still branded hotly in her memory.

he had replaced her math teacher who unexpectedly cancelled out her class on the last minute. unfortunately, mr. park just had to teach the same subject and his main course is calculus. coincidentally, it was also calculus class that day.

you probably knew what would happen, so saving you the details, mr. park had become the number one person on her list of most hated teacher.)

needless to say, sinb hoped that mr. park won’t ever be her teacher for the next 2 years she still had to remain and stay here, one lecture from the old man was enough to petrify the poor girl.

(to know how terrifying mr. park is, classes who get mr. park as their math teacher fall into a special category.

aka ‘the chosen ones’.

what’s even scarier is that mr. park never call off any classes – except maybe he dies in a car crash or something of sort – so whoever get him to teach for the whole year is world’s most doomed students ever.)

“sinb-yah!! sorry i’m late, today’s last period is calculus and you know my math teacher is mr. park!”

oh yeah, she had totally forgotten about eunha’s timetable on wednesday.

“can you believe what he did today!! he said if everyone didn’t finish up copying the note no one is getting out from the class and he checked all of us one by one, turns out someone lied and we had to stay in class listen to him scream about why we shouldn’t lie!” eunha rambled on like she was rapping without taking in any breather.

“oh my god unnie, yes i know, you hate him very much, there’s no need to be this agitated…”

“i’m just mad, how can one has the patience to deal with him, even the world’s most patient person will falter under his thunderous mouth.”

“l-let’s just go, don’t want your friend to wait for too long.”

“ah yeah, let’s go! i talked too much about mr. park!”

******

eunha and sinb took a stride journey together to their destination, it was merely a 5 minutes stroll away from the college.

karaoke is something that sinb had never went to in her whole 19 years of living, the cause is partly seeing as her singing capability is horribly out of this world, sinb tried to save herself from ruining someone’s hearing.

(it was probably the best life decision she had ever made.)

pushing through the heavy transparent glass door, eunha skipped joyfully to the reception counter, sinb wordlessly tread on the heels of the short haired girl.

“appointment under the name choi yuna, which room is it?” questioned eunha, the skin of her elbows relaxed against the feeling of the cold marble surface.

the employee stilly thumbed down a few keys on the keyboard, before then she hoisted her head up. “room 3, turn right down the hallway.”

eunha simpered, “thank you!” she took sinb’s hand in hers and embarked on a short jog to said room. “come on, they must be waiting!”

walking on the carpeted floor leading to room 3, the running singer hurriedly grasped the handle of the fancy metal door and nudged it open.

“hello, we’re here!”

2 heads turned around instinctively to peep at the intruders, one unfamiliar and the other was recognized.

as if turned to stone, sinb stood unmoving, her feet planted deeply into the rug.

oh my god.

it’s kim yewon.

she was so uninformed about this.

“yuna! sorry that we’re kind of late, mr. park detained me in his class!”

“it’s fine, we just arrived a few minutes ago too.”

“oh who’s this? aw you’re so cute, what’s your name? how old are you?” continuously, eunha shot questions at yewon, all the while pinching and pulling on her cheeks.

“i-i’m kim yewon, 19 years old, would you mind letting go please?” yewon spoke through the pinching torture.

the torturer let go of the flesh in her fingers, “ah yewonie! i’m jung eunbi, 20 years old, but call me eunha-unnie, okay?”

“y-yes eunha-unnie…”

“come on sinb, don’t be shy, introduce yourself too!”

“h-hello, i’m hwang eunbi, but call me sinb,” she shyly revealed herself from the back of eunha.

yuna gestured the standing couple to sit down, “alright, hurry up and sit down, i’m gonna set the song up.”

eunha occupied the seat near yuna, so sinb could only sit by yewon.

now this is super awkward, she didn’t know how to spark up a conversation since yewon was here unexpectedly.

sinb might look like she’s good at socializing, but it was completely false.

on the day she attempted to give yewon her phone number, it took her numerous hours to muster up the courage. even so, she was freaking out internally. granted, she was more likely to be comfortable in conversation through texting, but when it comes to non-virtual interacting, it’s undoubtedly a ‘hell nah’ from sinb.

(she confronted yewon because there was just something around her that is pulling her in. she had talked to eunha for this – with yewon being an anonymous – if it wasn’t for the older, sinb wouldn’t have hit up on yewon.)

while yuna and eunha had fun with the microphone, yewon and sinb could only sit behind (sinb guessed that yewon might also be tone deaf at singing), watching as the 2 singers sang in harmony.

silence dawned upon the 2 sophomores, both remained to be lost for words.

god, what did i do to deserve this?

******

there was still time left after the 4 hours session of entertainment back in the karaoke, yuna and eunha decided to go shopping in the nearby mall.

while eunha and yuna conversed on their pasts, sinb and yewon trailed behind at a leisure pace, cold ice creams being held in their hands. the dancer blandly the frozen treat. she loved ice cream, but she wasn’t feeling it right now.

she was pretty sure her life is done now, right at this moment.

she sang in front of yewon, with her heart out. she tried so hard to sing properly, but when she turned around, all she saw was the other 3 covered up their ears completely, their faces scrunched up.

sinb tried so hard that she didn’t realize how loud her volume was, she was on the verge to let out a sob on the spot. she was sure she somehow disappointed them.

noticing how down the other was, yewon couldn’t help but make an effort to comfort her. the pianist took a step nearer, yet the dancer was too into her world to notice.

“hey… you seem down, is there anything wrong?” questioned yewon, up another stripe of her own ice cream.

sinb gave a slight jump, cuing that she was unquestionably startled by the sudden comment. “it’s nothing, you don’t really have to know.”

“it’s about what happened in the karaoke, isn’t it? you’re only acting weird after you sang.”

the quietness from sinb was enough to prove that yewon was right.

“there’s nothing wrong in being bad at singing, everyone is talented in their own way! look, though you may not be good at being a vocalist, but you’re a great dancer.”

“i-i know that, it’s just…” sinb dragged off, the last word dwindled into a soft whisper.

“just what?”

“you looked like you were really expecting my singing, so…”

to be very honest, that was no lie. yewon actually was anticipating, she tried to hide it, but she supposed that she failed from what sinb just said.

“oh, well… yes i was actually looking forward to your singing, but honestly, it’s not really that bad! i’ve had heard worse!”

“if you think my singing is bad, then just say it, you don’t have to lie to comfort me.”

hearing this, yewon quickly explained herself, she doesn’t want sinb to get any wrong idea. “no, i’m really not lying!” she genuinely believed that her voice was not bad.

“if you insist.”

as if to break the atmosphere, sinb’s cellphone rang, a familiar tune chimed in their ears and yewon gulped shockingly.

isn’t that one of my piano piece?

she never thought that sinb would ever listen to her music.

“hello?” sinb answered.

“hwang eunbi!! where are the both of you? i thought you guys were following us closely, where the hell did you guys disappeared to?” eunha yelled into the phone with her booming voice. the dancer winced at the loudness, moving away from the phone to protect her precious ear.

it turned out that the duo was excessively in their own little world that they were separated from the other pair and they were a little too late to comprehend the occurred situation.

“sorry unnie, where are you? we’ll go right there now!”

“second floor, by the fast food restaurant we always go.”

“okay, just wait for us there. bye!” she removed the gadget from her ear and hung up.

“did you realize that we just lost them?”

“huh?” yewon looked around, only then it dawned onto her that their older friends weren’t in front of them. “oh! i didn’t realize that, where are they?”

“second floor, let’s go meet them.”

sinb looked at yewon, making eye contact in the process. they didn’t know what came to them, but when their eyes met, they let out a small laugh together.
