“do I look like rain sunbae-nim?...do i?” …..minhwan asked jaejin.

“aigoo…!!! This little boy….i told you…only a bit…..stop asking me that…!!” . jaejin responded to minhwan.  

This is not first time minhwan asking the same question…..not only to jaejin, but also the rest of their gang.

Yup….they are all five members in the gang called “the ultimate five”. The leader is…jonghun. Choi jonghun. He’s the most good looking among the five members. But each member in the group has their specialty.

Hongki- powerful voice

Jaejin- his smile melts girl easily

Seunghyun- he can act aeygoo perfectly and his cool behaviors made people loves him

Minhwan- genius plus…a bit immature

This five was friends since kindergarten. They were like family, living together.

everything looks normal only in the eyes of others. but for them, it is very important.The promises that binds their friendship.

“hongki aa……I have something to tell you….” Jonghun said. “this is the time…” he whispered to himself.

Hongki gives a strange looking towards jonghun. “ what is it jonghun aa…? Sounds  like it is important …” hongki reply.

Jonghun look down to the floor. Looks like he’s gather up his strength to tell hongki about something.

He takes a very deep breath before he start to talk. This made hongki a bit nervous.

“ hongki….anything I’ll tell you….please keep it as a secret between the two of us. Please, I’m begging you” jonghun start the words.

Hongki again, gives another super strange looking to his friend. “I promise you. what is it chingu yaaa…..? barae…”

“the truth is……”he stop there. Can no longer continue his words. His eyes began to teary….

Hongki that feel very uncomfortable with the situation look deeply into his friend eyes. He can’t stand looking at his friend in such condition. “what is it chingu ya…..? barae….you know you can tell me everything….so,barae…..” hongki try to give a few words to his friend. Try to stop this awkward atmosphere.

Again, jonghun takes a deep breath. “I’m dying….” Again, the words stop. Silence for a moment. No words come out from both of them. “ahahahaha….don’t try to be funny here jonghun aaaa…..not this kind of joke please…..” hongki said as his eyes went to tears.

He try to slip from the word jonghun just said. The tears flowed faster on jonghun cheek. Slowly he shooking his head ..”anie, I’m not joking….cincayo….”. hongki become speechless.

“what….wwhe…aahhhh!!!!...what is this all about?”. Hongki lost on his words.

“hongki aa……. I’ve brain tumors and in worsen from day to day. I have not much time left” jonghun try to put a smile on his face. He added “sorry for not telling you earlier as i don’t want to bother you guys. Hajiman, leaving you guys with not even a single clue, I don’t thinks I can. Anyway, I need your help”. Hongki looking at jonghun.  “jonghun aaa…….” “please…” jonghun said to hongki as hongki can’t even finish his word. “araso, araso….what is it?”

Feb 2010, sungkyunkwan high school

“seunghyun, jaejin aaa…palli….” Minhwan shouted to seunghyun and jaejin.

“he doesn’t look like he’s sick right…always put a bright smile on his face. I wonder where the spirit come from?” seunghyun said to jaejin.

There is a warm smile on jaejin face. To him, looking at minhwan with his spirit and never shows the world what is he going through, that put him in a very painful condition. He can’t bear looking at minhwan like that cause he knows how hard it was. “ya, he’s a strong man now…..he never want us to worry about him….”.

“palli…palli!!!!” minhwan shouted as jaejin and seunghyun get nearer him. “araso …araso…..” both of them answered. They stop the conversation there while walking faster to get minhwan.

They are heading home after school today.

“minhwan fighting! Minhwan fighting! Minhwan fighting!!!” everyone in the gymnasium cheering for him.

Minhwan is the captain basketball team in his school. He is pro in the game. The hero and also the spirit. Jaejin also part of the basketball team. He’s the center of the game. On the other corner, hongki, jonghun and seunghyun enjoy watching over the game.

“okay…you know how long we didn’t get a chance to win over this game right?” taecyon said to team. This is actually the fourth times sungkyunkwan high school  met jangdongguk high school. The previous three time won by sungkyunkwan high school. Taecyon is the leader for dongguk high school basketball team. “yes!”. Said the rest of the team. “ok! This time we must win…or else we will shame…give attention to minhwan and jaejin step….araso..?” taecyon said. “yes captain!!!”. “ok…let show them who we really are!!”

The game started. The first half won by sungkyunkwan 32 left behind dongguk by 23.

“proceed with the plan we made last night!!! Araso….!!!” Taecyon said to junsu and chansung. “nae!!!” both of them reply.

“ok, we may start now”  second half will start.

Both team entered the court.

“pheweeettt” the game started.

While the ball is in jaejin hand, junsu and chansung both run towards jaejin tried to grab the ball. As junsu try to grab the ball from jaejin, minhwan see that chansung trying to push jaejin. Looking at the situation, minhwan runs toward jaejin and block jaejin body from being push.  This cause minhwan fell to the ground.  

Hongki, jonghun and seunghyun shocked due to the sudden incident. They all three ran toward minhwan. Jaejin that still on the court sat down to see minhwan condition. Minhwan was subconscious. Then it was blank.

At the Seoul general hospital

“are you all his family? Where is minhwan”s family?. The doctor asked  four of them. “he didn’t have any doctor. He lost his family since he was 6 years old. We are his family now”. Seunghyun answered.

“okay…guess I need to talk to four of you about his condition right now”. The doctor said. Jonghun expression change. “that sound weird” he whispered. “urmm…did minhwan ever fainted before? Or is he ever complain about chest pain or something regarding heart beat went fast?”. The doctor ask.

“I guess no. he never told me about being sick or having a chest pain” hongki said. “but he does fainted once before. You guys remember when he at the kitchen trying to cook something for us” jonghun added. “ya, that time. But it just for a moment. And minhwan said it is maybe because he is very tired” jaejin said. Four of them agree with one another statement.

“guess I get picture now. Okay, I want four of you listen for what I’m gonna say right now. And please remain calm okay.” The doctor said looking at four of them one by one. Hongki, jonghun, minhwan and seunghyun try to calm their self. They nodded.

“minhwan is suffering with heart dieses. his heart is getting weaker each day. And the worst of all, he needs to find a new heart. Cause if he didn’t find any, his heart can stop working anytime.” The doctor stops for a while. Taking a deep breath. He knew that, as a doctor to give such news to family members is such a hard works that they must do.  Trying hard to hold the tears, making them cries unbearable. Only jaejin still hold back his tears. It’s not that he’s not sad about the shocking news, but he believes, he should be stronger to give full support to minhwan.  It was just like yesterday seeing him in a good healthy young man. Enjoying every moments in his life. And suddenly….. everything has changes.

Minhwan still unconscious lying on his bed. Jonghun and hongki stand besides minhwan bed while seunghyun sit beside him holding minhwan’s hand.

“where is jaejin?” hongki asked. “Outside, he needs to clear his mind. You know him. He will not let his tears burst in front of us”. Jonghun reply to hongki. “it must be hard for him cause he promise to himself to protect minhwan at the first place plus, minhwan saved him that made minhwan lying right now. I think, he’s  blaming himself”. Seunghyun told hongki and jonghun. It’s not like they know each other for a year or two, it is more than ten years already. They know each other very well.

Outside seoul hospital, jaejin sat on bench facing the views of seoul city. Trying hard to clean his mind.

“wae..? why are you all alone here? Where is your parents?”. Jaejin asks the boys who is crying there.  “omma gone…appa too…..” said the little boy. Jaejin shocked and asks him where is his home. “I don’t know…someone drop me here…. I want omma…appa….”. the boy continue crying. “what is your name boy?” jaejin ask again. “minhwan”.  Short answer by the little boy. “let go home with hyung, I promise I’ll take care of you from this moment” jaejin told the boy. “who the hell that can leave this little boy anywhere without anything with him…are they human or what!!! Damn it!!!! I hate these kind of people!!!!” jaejin thought. On the way home, he kept cursing the person that left minhwan there.

“hyung, omma and appa said I’m a good boy!!! But why are they leaving me alone in this world? People that sent me here said appa and omma is up there…why hyung..?”. minhwan question made jaejin speechless. “They love you, that’s why you should be a strong boy from now on. Don’t worry, I promise, I’ll take care of you from this moment”. Jaejin said. Both of them are not really different in age. Jaejin is 7 years old on that time while minhwan was 6. Jaejin parents really nice that they let minhwan stayed there. Jaejin’s parents loves minhwan as their son.

“jaejin aaa…..what’s on your mind?” jonghun ask. jaejin back to reality. “nothing, I just thought about the first time I met minhwan…..i promise him I’ll take a good care of him. But now….i..i…” as jaejin can’t finish his word, the tears that he tried hardly to hold droped one by one.  “don’t hold your tears chingu yaa….cry as much as you want. Let it go dear” jonghun said as he put his arm around jaejin’s back. At that moment, jaejin cries hardly.

“hyungs, don’t worry about me….i’m a strong boy…aigoo…what’s with that sad faces huh…! Where your smile? How can I eat if your faces keep to be like that…..really ugly…I lost my appetite already….. !! “ minhwan said as he want to calms his hyungs. Minhwan has already known about his sickness. He accepted it calmly. It’s not himself that his worried about, but the rest of the members. They must be really down now.

“okay….see…I’m smiling…keke…” seunghyun put a sweet smile on his face.” Palli, eat!!! Or else I’ll never treat you chicken…I thought of treating you guys chicken….hurmmm” seunghyun added. The rest understand seunghyun effort, and they also knew what to do. “ya…palli….!!!” Hongki shouted….”yaaa…!!!! you promise huh….”minhwan said to seunghyun…..”araso…araso…!!! palli!!!” seunghyun reply. This made them burst into laughter .

From that moment, they tried to never talk about minhwan sickness or else. They tried to pretend like nothing happens. But they always pray that there will be a heart-donator soon for minhwan.

Today,May 2010

“jonghun aa…hongki aaa….we are home!!!” minhwan shouted. Hongki come out from jonghun’s room and look at them. “wae hongki aa…?” seunghyun ask hongki as he saw hongki’s face expression. Jaejin and minhwan give a look to hongki. “ya….wae..?” now, jaejin ask the same question as hongki didn’t answer senghyun’s question.

Hongki lift up her face, looking at jaejin, seunghyun and minhwan face one by one. His eyes went teary. “sorry guys….i’m really really sorry…..” songki said as he started to cry. The rest of the members really shocked with hongki’s sudden acts. “what is it hyung…? Barae…” minhwan said. “where is jonghun..? hongki…?” seunghyun ask as he doesn’t see jonghun. Jaejin walk toward hongki and hold hongki’s back. “what is it..? tell us one by one…..” jaejin try to calm hongki.

They are all now sat on the sofa. Waiting for hongki to say something. “I’m sorry that I only can tell you about this now. I’m really sorry. But this, I’ve promise to jonghun.” Hongki stops for a moment. “jonghun is in the hospital” hongki said and he look at each members expression. Everyone become speechless. “why? When?” seunghyun ask. hongki then took out something from his pocket and hand it over to the members.

Dear my life members….seunghyun, minhwan, jaejin and hongki….

I’m sorry for not telling you that I’m dying. But I’ve spent my last moments with you guys which was the happiest moment in my live. I’ll never forget the four of you. Thank you very much for always being with me…..i hope we can still meet in the next life. I believe we will.

To hongki, I’m sorry for making you worry about my sickness and thank you very much for keeping your promise. i didn’t wish to leave you guys without any clue what is happening to me. That’s why I decided to tell you. Thank you again. I hope you meet your life partner and have a happy family.

To jaejin, I know you as a warm person. But sometimes we need to warm ourselves too. So, don’t hold back. Espress your feeling dear. Looking at you bearing everything by your own, it made me feel the pain. You know we always be by your side. It’s time for you to think about yourself too. I’ll always paying for you success and happiness.

Seunghyun, among the group you have the bright character that makes us alive. Thanks for cheering up my days. Thank you very much. I know, sometimes I’m being a bit harsh to you. Sometimes I release my anger toward you, but you remain calm. Cause you understand us better. I’m sorry for that. I love you.

And to my little strong dongsaeng, please stay alive. I’ve decided to give my heart to you. Please accept it. I know you wouldn’t, that’s why I’ve asked hongki for help. He will manage everything after I’m gone. Please. Live in this beautiful world with my heart. So I can always be near to you guys.  Let me live in your body, so every beat of your heart, we’ll always together.

Thanks to all of you. Please proceeds with your life. Stick together until the very end of your life.  I love all of you. Thank you for this wonderful friendship. Annyeong…….

“palli…palli….!!!” Seunghyun said to jaejin. “waeyo?” jaejin give a weird looks to seunghyun. “surprise!!!!” suddenly hongki and minhwan appea fom the kitchen.

 “happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to jaejin….happy birthday to you!!!!”

it was a surprised party for jaejin.

“wow!!! You made me shocked!!!! Kamsahamnida…..kamsahamnida….! “jaejin said.

 “blow the candle..and make your wish too…keke” minhwan said.

“I wish jonghun is looking at us now, celebrating it together. And I wish  we will never be separated. Ya…I wish we all could be together forever” jejin whispered to himself and he blow the candle.

It almost four months jonghun has left them. But, as jonghun’s heart still beating in minhwan’s body, they are all together.
