Birthday Wishes01 || fourteen
˝Are you asleep?˝ Chanwoo whispered.
Bin felt too tired to open his eyes so he kept them closed. ˝No. Is it midnight?˝
˝It is.˝ Bin could feel Chanwoo’s breath on his cheek. Personal space was something his best friend had trouble understanding sometimes. ˝Happy birthday Bin.˝
˝Happy birthday to you too.˝
˝Are you that sleepy?˝ He felt Chanwoo’s fingers on his temple but he didn’t open his eyes.
˝Aren’t you?˝
˝Not really.˝
˝Shame. Good night.˝ Chanwoo poked his shoulder but Bin refused to move. Chanwoo let out an annoyed huff and Bin hoped that his room was dark enough to hide his smile.
˝Let’s talk,˝ Chanwoo was whispering directly into Bin’s ear. Sadly for him after years of knowing each other Bin was no longer affected by these things anymore.
˝Let’s sleep.˝
˝No,˝ Chanwoo whined a little too loudly considering Bin’s family was probably already asleep. ˝Talk to me.˝
˝About what?˝
˝Anything.˝
Bin thought about it. ˝I don’t know what to say.˝
Chanwoo sighed like Bin was the unreasonable one. When he didn’t speak immediately Bin thought that he was finally going to be able to go to sleep but after a minute Chanwoo said, ˝Tell me what you want to do with your life.˝
Bin was grateful that Chanwoo at least wanted to know something that was easy to answer. ˝Finish high school with good grades, get into a good university, get a good job. The normal stuff.˝
˝Oh.˝
And that one sound achieved what all of the whispers, touches and breathing on Bin’s face couldn’t. It made him open his eyes. The lamp they left so they wouldn’t fall asleep allowed him to see Chanwoo’s face. Bin couldn’t tell if it was sadness or disappointment but something in his best friend’s expression made him want to change the answer he was so sure about a second ago. ˝What’s wrong?˝
˝Nothing’s wrong. I just-˝ he paused for a second. Maybe to gather his thoughts, maybe to come up with a convincing lie. Sometimes Bin couldn’t read him at all. ˝I think I was hoping for a different answer.˝
˝What answer were you hoping for?˝
˝I don’t know.˝ Before Bin could question it any further he added, ˝We should sleep.˝
Bin could have insisted on an explanation, perhaps he should have but instead he hummed in agreement and turned away from Chanwoo. Sometimes his best friend confused him.
Chanwoo woke up first. That wasn’t surprising considering Bin was as far away from being a morning person as one could get. What surprised Chanwoo was the guilt he felt. Going to a good university, getting a job finishing high school with good grades all of those were normal and realistic goals which Chanwoo himself should have been striving for. Yet something about Bin listing them off made him feel nervous.
Chanwoo told Bin he was hoping for a different answer. The problem was that he himself had no idea what that answer was.
