FIVE. arcane power
The Little Blue Bird (an epic high fantasy saga)“See, the Angels used very simple and organized marks, and tried to be minimal, so the intent of the mage using rune is important as marks mean multiple things. Take a look at this one.” Kyungsoo pulls out a sheet with a relatively sparse rune. A modern rune with a similar amount of marks would likely be quite powerless – it would only be able to accomplish turning on a stove.
“This rune means flight. You can use it to fly yourself, make something else fly, or to guide something that is already flying. Do you want to try?”
“Sure.” I scan the page, trying to draw the magic out of the rune. Make the pen fly. I begin to draw the power form the rune, or try to. Nothing happens.
“. I mean I’m not surprised, but I really don’t know how to use the rune.”
“Perhaps you should write it yourself.” I nod, and he hands me a sheet of parchment and a pen. As I copy the rune, it seems to make itself more understandable. Just a few lines.
I close my eyes. Breathe. Fly. A blinding white light fills the room and suddenly, I am afloat. Flying.
“Damn,” he whispers as the light fades. I remain in the air, the rune still alight in front of me.
I wave through it, and I come back down to the ground. Exhilarating.
“I have two more I’d like for you to try, if you would care to learn what they are.”
“Of course.”
He pulls out two sheets and hands them
