To Be Helped by You

To Be By Your Side

The black car speeded down the empty street with the street light guiding the way. The driver was quiet while the passenger, who sat beside him, was a bit jittery on the inside. As the car merged onto the highway, the silence continued and the pair experiences the awkward atmosphere together.

"What you wanna eat?" Mark cut the awkward atmosphere with his voice.

"Seriously? Why do you suddenly..." Donghyuck looked at the driver skeptically.

"It's no big deal. Just thank you for preventing me from getting wet last night."

"Oh..."

"So what exactly would you like to eat?"

"Why do I have to decide? Aren't you the one driving?"

"You're younger so I have to treat my freshman."

"I'm fine with whatever."

"There's a restaurant that's pretty good nearby. I'll take you there."

Donghyuck observed Mark's face to find any ulterior motive but couldn't see anything. If he stares anymore, there's probably hole burned into Mark's flawless face. In the end, Donghyuck chooses to look around the car. The music system is pretty modern with the light illuminating the buttons. His little exploration didn't go unnoticed by Mark.

"That's a science student for you," He commented verbally. "So curious about everything."

"Why you're so serious?" Donghyuck asked out of curiosity.

"Because you're gonna say I'm not serious enough," The driver smiled a bit. Suddenly, Mark's phone rang and classical tone filled the whole car. The owner of the phone just turns the sound off after checking the caller id.

"You're not answering?" Donghyuck stared at the female name on the screen.

"No..."

The phone stopped vibrating for a second before the person called back again. "Answer it! Maybe it's urgent."

"Then, you answer it for me," Mark mentally smirked. "I'm driving."

"I don't want to."

"Then shut up," The driver flashed a smile Donghyuck's way.

The freshman just pouted and picked up the ringing phone. When he clicked on the green button and held it up to his ear, a girl's voice rang through the phone. "Hello?"

"Hello, is it Mark? What are you doing now?" The girl sounded very flirty and high pitched.

"That..."

"Why didn't you answer the phone? Were you in the middle of something? I was told you helped freshmen practiced. Tired?"

"Actually..."

"If you're exhausted, can I go to your apartment? You still live in the same place. I can help you with-"

"With what?" Donghyuck cut her off mid-sentence. He sounded a little angry and Mark slightly smile because he knows who the girl is.

"Just help you to... feel that way..."

"No need for that! Mark doesn't like free stuff!" The angry tone just got angrier.

"Who the hell are you? I want to talk to Mark," The flirty tone of the girl is gone. It changed to scared and surprised.

"Don't try to call again!" Donghyuck hanged up the phone as the girl yelled through the phone. It's loud enough for Mark to hear even though the speaker isn't on. "What the hell was that? Who's the woman? When did she get your number? It's dangerous. What if you agreed to meet her? What would you do? Wouldn't you feel awful? Your image would be ruin. Is your number that easy to get?"

"Shortie..." Mark said fondly.

"What?" Donghyuck spatted out.

"Why are you worrying so much?" The driver smiled.

"I don't. This problem is you but if it doesn't resolve soon, it'll grow. You should get rid of it soon!" Donghyuck didn't watch his tone at all so it sounds like he's scolding his senior.

"I did reject her but she still called me," Mark ignored the tone Donghyuck is using because he honestly thought the freshman looked cute angry.

"Block her!"

"I did but she still called me somehow."

"Just change your number!"

"Shortie..."

"What?"

"Calm down..."

Donghyuck finally came off of the adrenaline and calm down. He sunk back into his seat as he remembers how he sounded for the last couple of minutes. It's like he worried about this stupid guy and it made him sounded like an overly protective boyfriend. "If a call like that happened again, just tell me."

"Why?" Mark decided to push the button a little further.

"Let me answer it," Donghyuck answered.

Mark smiled to himself as he turned the car into a plaza. The restaurant he was talking about sat between two smaller places so it was easy to find. When he parked the car, Mark ran over to open the door before Donghyuck could open it. The two of them walked into the restaurant and take a seat opposite of each other on a table in the middle of the restaurant.

"What do you want to eat?" Mark asked as the freshman scanned the menu. "Hurry!"

"Don't rush me," Donghyuck has on the cute angry look again. Food is important to Donghyuck so he took his sweet time to decide on what to eat. The waitress didn't seem to mind as she kept on staring at Mark with a goofy look on her face. "An omelet with minced meat, fried vegetables, and Sour and sweet meat, please."

Donghyuck looked up and see the waitress didn't write anything down. She only sighed and continued to stare at Mark, who is oblivious of this. Donghyuck rolled his eyes. "Miss? Miss? MISS!"

He repeated his order when the waitress snapped out of it. Mark made some snarky comment about Donghyuck's order when the waitress writes it down. "What kind of food you ordering?"

"Then, what do you wanna eat?" Donghyuck leaned forward a bit.

"A tofu with minced meat soup," Mark told the waitress.

"No better than mine."

"What was that?"

"Nothing... I was just saying it sounds good."

Mark didn't believe him but he just tried to jest the freshman for his amusement. The freshman looked over to see the waitress staring at Mark again. He got annoyed so he waved the menu in front of her face and repeated Mark's order with two cups of water. The waitress hurried away.

"So what are you gonna do for the talent show?" Mark asked.

Donghyuck about it for a while and shrugged. "I don't know yet. There isn't anything I'm good at."

"I can see that but give it more thought," The sophomore replied. "Everyone is good at something, even you."

As Donghyuck think harder, their drinks came. "I learned how to play the piano."

"There you go," Mark smiled triumphantly.

"But where can I practice?"

"Want me to help?"

"You... wanna help?"

"If I don't help you, you'll lose before it'll start. I just want an equal playing field."

The two of them turned their head to see the waitress standing there with the foods but she's too busy drooling over Mark. Donghyuck grabbed the dish and pulled it to get her attention. She snapped out of it and laughed nervously. Mark was entertained throughout this whole exchange.

"You're lucky because they're using a piano during the opening show," Mark told the freshman. "It'll be easy to get the prop."

"That's awesome!"

"Yeah, but you still need to practice."

"Didn't you say you gonna help me?"

"I will but like you say earlier, I don't like free things, especially when I'm giving it away," Mark smirked.

"Then what do you want?" Donghyuck physically shrunk away from Mark. Naughty thoughts entered his mind.

"Don't flatter yourself," The sophomore scoffed. "Mmmmhm, what do I want? How about this. You have to be my servant until the day of the competition."

"Sure," The naive freshman shrugged.

"You're quite funny."

"What you gonna do?"

"Nothing..."

"I know you like to bad-mouth me."

"You sound like you didn't do the same thing to me. You gotta say please though."

Donghyuck hesitant for a bit before he leaned forward. "Please master."

Mark silently enjoys his foods with a smile on his face. They ate their foods and Mark drove the freshman home, which is the apartment dorm that both of them lived at. When they stopped at Donghyuck's dorm, Mark bids the younger boy good night with a surprise.

"Come to my room at 7 tomorrow morning," He said as he walked away.

"Why?" Donghyuck yelled in surprise. "I have practice at 9."

"I have class at 8," Mark replied.

"Wait, you still have class? Didn't you just finish the test?"

"New class..."

"Then, why did you want me to come to your room so early?"

"Organized my room since I don't have time to do it."

"Does it have to be tomorrow?" Donghyuck loves his sleep so having to wake up earlier than necessary is a real chore. He also hates chore.

"Why do you ask so many questions?" Mark asked back. "You're my servant remember?"

"Understood master," Donghyuck replied sarcastically.

After Mark left, Donghyuck sluggishly walked into his room. The schedule today up all his energy so he slumped down onto his bed after throwing his backpack on the small loveseat in one corner of the room. His head hung upside down from the edge of the bed. When he opened his eyes, Donghyuck looked at the little Mark's shrine he has near his bed. It's a bit late so Donghyck decided to clean up himself and go to sleep.

The freshman managed to get a good six hour of sleep before waking up at 6 in the morning. Donghyuck slowly did his morning routine as quickly as possible. His lazy brain is still sleeping as he brushed his teeth and washed his face. By the time he's done, the clock showed a 6:20 am.

"I can get another 30 minutes sleep," Donghyuck said out loud and jump back to bed.

The next time Donghyuck woke up, he expected the time to be 6:50 but it's 7:15. He quickly ran out of his room to go to Mark's dorm. Before he knocked, Donghyuck checked his breath and tapped his face a bit to wake himself up. The first knock got the door opened already but Donghyuck wasn't ready for the other person on the other side of the door.

Mark opened the door with his wet hair and cleaned face. Luckily, or unluckily, Mark was already dressed. If the sophomore wasn't dressed, Donghyuck would have drool like an idiot already. As he followed the sophomore inside, Donghyuck couldn't help but let his imagination go wild. The dripping wet hair did not help at all.

"The documents are over there," Mark told him. Donghyuck didn't answer because his mind is in the gutter but that wasn't what Mark thought. "I know it's a lot but just do as much as you can."

"Uh? Oh, ok," Donghyuck dazedly answered.

The freshman took a seat next to Mark's desk. All the documents were scattered under the desk. They just need to be sorted and categorized. Donghyuck tried to focus on the task but the sound of hair dryer got him curious. Mark was drying his hair right by the bathroom door where a mirror was hung. Unsurprisingly, Mark caught the freshman staring at him.

"What? Fallen for my handsome face?" He asked. Donghyuck mentally rolled his eyes and got back to work but that didn't stop Mark from talking. "Can I tell you something? I've been this gorgeous since I was born."

This time, Donghyuck couldn't stop the eyes roll. The sophomore is a bit full of himself but Mark only acts like this to tease Donghyuck. The older boy walked over to his desk to see how Donghyuck is doing. "You good?"

Donghyuck couldn't answer. He's too occupied with staring at the aesthetically pleasing view of Mark's face. The guy might be cocky but he has every right to be with that beautiful face.

"These are about the small intestine and those are about the large intestine," Mark reorganized the third to last stack of papers. "Have you ever studied biology? ... Can you do this?"

"Of course," Donghyuck grudgingly after a pause.

"Can I trust you?" Mark half mocks half seriously asks. "If the freshmen got the wrong documents, it will cause serious damage to them."

"By the time these documents are necessary, the freshmen would have been sophomore," The freshman retorted.

"Just do it right so you don't have to do it later."

"Got it..."

Mark got up from his position next to Donghyuck and walked over to his one person seat. The room was quiet for a moment, except the occasional flipping of papers from Donghyuck organization. Mark quietly scrolls through his online textbooks. "Don't forget to separate the freshmen documents and the sophomore documents."

Donghyuck didn't answer. He just rolls his eyes and presses his lips together. After a while, Mark decided it's time to go and he offers to drop Donghyuck near his class. Although it doesn't start until a little bit later, Donghyuck agrees to let Mark drop him off.

"Meet me downstairs in 5 minutes, don't be late."

Donghyuck replied with a whatever look before exiting Mark's room. On the inside, he's hella excited. The freshman ran to his dorm room and changed the quickest he had ever changed. After that, he sped out of his dorm and toward the stairs only to go back because he forgot to lock the door. His excitement continued to build on and on until he got to the lobby and got disappointed.

It really to write these parts when I already know the good stuff that's gonna happen. Sorry for the late update, I wasn't feeling good about writing. I don't want to write when I didn't want to because it'll end up to be subpar and the readers deserve better. Anyway, Sotus S recently aired. Who's watching it? Hands up.

FIGHTING!!!

Chapter 23: I just finished this and OMG what a ride it has been. The content, storyline and character development are all relatable in a scary way, but unlike them reality is not as kind to me. Nonetheless, being able to lose myself in such idealistic world that I have no doubt other readers experienced too when they read this story serves as the highest compliment, the most adoring praise and the brightest testament to the ablity of the creator of such masterpiece. Thank you for sharing it with us.
