To Be Holding Your Heart

To Be By Your Side

Donghyuck bit his lips and curled his toes The weight of Mark against his back and the position they are currently in are not helping Donghyuck's imagination. His thoughts are going a thousand miles per hour and they are not kid-friendly. He grips onto the bedsheet like his sanity is depending on it as he tries to stop a certain body part from growing. It didn't help that Mark continues to lean closer and closer.

Donghyuck squeezes his eyes shut and squeaks. "I'm sorry!"

Satisfied, Mark got up and looked over at the shrine that Donghyuck dedicated to him. The pictures are mostly from his high school time but not much has changed between then and now. Mark still has the same wavy hairstyle, the same light honey skin, and the same sense of fashion.

"When were these taken?" Mark asked. "I don't remember ever doing photoshoots in high school."

"I didn't take them myself," Donghyuck answered truthfully. "I got most of them from your fan club."

"I had a fan club?"

"Mmm..."

"If I knew someone would buy these, I would have sold them myself. I could have been rich," Mark put down the frame he was holding. Donghyuck was about to make a smartass comeback but Mark continued on. "By the way, are you this crazy about me?"

The younger boy didn't answer. One one hand, he is totally crazy about Mark. There are times where he wished he could hide the sophomore away so that only he can look at him but that would be illegal. On another hand, the freshman wants to parade around the world to show them the perfect person that is Mark. His dilemma often causes him to dwell in confusion as he doesn't know what he wants to do. Mark took Donghyuck's silent as a yes.

"What is this?" The sophomore picked up a gray velvet box that laid in front of the pictures.

Donghyuck hesitated to answer. "Well... I wanted to give it to you back in high school."

"Why not?"

"I overheard that you like girls, exclusively, so I didn't in order to save myself the embarrassment."

"Then, I'll take it now. Since I don't like girls, exclusively, now," Mark couldn't help but grin at the cuteness that Donghyuck is oozing out. He took out the black leather bracelet that's inside. From the way it is manufactured, the bracelet doesn't seem like a cheap knockoff but rather a high-end piece of accessory. "Thank you... but I don't have anything to give you."

"It's ok."

"You have good eyes," The older male commented as he looked at how compatible the bracelet is with his current outfit. "Go shower now..."

"No..." Donghyuck sunk back onto his comfy bed.

"You would rather sleep than go eat breakfast with me? How hurtful! Just come with me!"

Donghyuck thoughts about it for a second before agreeing. He sluggishly got out of his bed and walked to the bathroom. After finishing his business in the bathroom, he grabs some casual cloth from outside and changes in there. Mark took the freshman to the porridge shop right across the street from their dormitory. As usual, the sophomore gained the attention of almost everyone in the restaurant. However, his attention was only on the person sitting in front of him.

"Here," Mark put one of his soft-boiled egg into Donghyuck porridge bowl. "I've never given it to anyone. It's my favorite."

"Thank you," Seungkwna teased the older male for his cheesiness.

"You're growing boy so you need all your energy," The older male teased back. "You'll need to grow taller if you going to beat Chenle in the competition."

"Me? Beating Chenle?"

"Mark, Donghyuck, hi!" Donghyuck didn't finish his thought before Wendy, the most popular girl in the sophomore year and Mark's friend, interrupted them. The two of them are rumored to be dating, which Donghyuck hate to deny it but they do look good together. "I didn't know you are gonna eat here today. How've you been? You guys went to the beach, right? You don't seem any darker."

"We didn't get to go outside much," Donghyuck answered politely. He tried to hate her but Wendy is too polite and nice.

"I would've gone too to take care of you freshmen but at least, I got ahead in my study, unlike a certain someone."

"Hey now," The certain someone replied. "You need to take it easy. Don't raise the mean score of the class."

"Well, same goes to you."

"Tutor me then."

"Fine, I will."

Donghyuck felt out of place and awkward. It's like he is thrid-wheeling on a couple during their date but the only difference is that he couldn't get up and leave without it being obvious why. All he could do is eat his porridge in silent and hope the duo in front of him would make out.

"When should we meet up?" Mark asked.

"I don't know. Whenever is fine..."

"Just pick a time. I would just probably listen to you talk."

While Wendy pondered on a study time, Mark noticed Donghyuck. The thought of the freshman didn't cross his mind but he could see that the boy is feeling awkward because of the way he looked down at his bowl. The sophomore bravely wiped away a little smudge from the corner of Donghyuck's lip without hesitation. Wendy noticed this and Donghyuck definitely is shocked by the older male's action.

"Such a messy eater," Mark commented gently.

"How cute is this?" Wendy lightly chuckled to hide her surprise. "Normally, you would ... but lately, the two of you been getting closer together."

"Well..." Mark tries to quickly come up with an answer that doesn't make the situation more awkward. "I've been close to all the freshman."

"Yeah right," The girl hit his shoulder lightly. "Our medicine department male rep, Chan, been complaining to me that you take care of a certain other department rep more than necessary."

Donghyuck could certainly sense the passive aggressive attitude now. There are heavy meanings behind Wendy's seemingly light words. Mark noticed this too of course but he chooses to not make a big deal out of it. "It's ok. I'll apologize to him but I don't think I treat anyone more special than other. Here, Donghyuck."

Mark is spoonfeeding the freshman another one half of his soft-boil egg right in from of Wendy. "Mark, don't you need to hurry? It's almost time for class."

"No worry, I can get there in 5 minutes. It's pretty close," Mark responded in a soft voice to ensure none of his annoyance can leak out.

"I'll come with you."

"Where's your car?"

"The guy at the mechanic place said the water pump of my car is faulty so it'll need to get fixed," Wendy answered. "I would get it back for a while."

"Can she?"

Donghyuck looked up from his bowl of porridge in surprise. Mark is actually asking him to make a decision on something that he shouldn't have a choice in. It's Mark's car so why did he ask Donghyuck to make the decision? "Huh?"

"Is it ok if Wendy comes with me?"

"Uh... yeah, sure..."

"I'll be waiting by the car," Wendy got up and walked out of the restaurant.

Mark followed her with sharp eyes but looking back at the boy in front of him. Once again, the freshman feels awkward and out of place. It's like he was the reason and power couple just broke up in a soap opera. Mark can see the awkwardness radiating from the younger male. "I know you're thinking too much about this. There's nothing between me and Wendy. The drive here to school would only take 5 minutes. So, nothing will happen. Ok?"

Donghyuck didn't answer. He didn't even nod to indicate he heard Mark.

"What can I do to earn your trust?" The sophomore sighed. He took out a sticky notepad and wrote something on it. Then, he grabbed Donghyuck's phone that was on the table and stuck the note onto it. By placing the phone face-down, Donghyuck couldn't see what Mark wrote on the note. "You're not allowed to look until I go to school and don't lose it either. Or I'll be mad."

Donghyuck and Mark walked back to the parking lot of the dorm after Mark paid for the food. Wendy waited patiently next to Mark's car. "Mark, we're gonna be late."

The sophomore male nodded to indicate that he heard her but he immediately turned around to Donghyuck. He ruffled the boy's hair "Stop pouting. Your face is gonna get bloated. I'll call you when I get out of my class."

Donghyuck couldn't hide his smile as Mark entered his car with Wendy. The older male waved through the window before driving away. The freshman walked back to his room in excitement. He wants to know what Mark wrote on the note.

You'll always have my heart... from Mark to Donghyuck.

"Hurry your up!" Donghyuck rolled his eyes as he walked to Lucas and his motorcycle.

Lucas is in the same major as Donghyuck, Biology. He's also the guy that volunteer Donghyuck to be the male representative for the biology department. Since he didn't want to walk to school, Donghyuck asked Lucas to give him a ride. The two of them got to the Biology building quicker than expected. Donghyuck's class won't start for another half an hour so he decided to hang out with the Lucas and his friends. It also helps that the female rep of the biology department and Donghyuck's partner, Yeri, is also there. The two of them awkward assimilate themselves into the conversation. Because they were thrown right into the competition from the beginning, Yeri and Donghyuck didn't have time to make close college friends. Most of them were just classmates. At least now, they have Lucas's little group to hang out with.

"And you didn't take any picture of the other reps while you guys were at the beach?" One of the girls scoffed. "What a waste of opportunity?"

"Sorry?" Donghyuck chuckled sheepishly.

"Hey now, Donghyuck is our rep," Lucas jumped in. "Looking at him should be enough to satisfy your thirst."

"Too bad he's taken," The girls teased.

Everyone looked at Donghyuck in shock as if they demand an explanation. However, the Biology male rep was saved by his phone ringing. He excused himself from the group to take the phone call. "Hello? Mark?"

"Miss me?" Mark's sweet voice escaped through the phone. "Cause I miss you."

"Aren't you in class?"

"Yeah but I want to hear your voice..."

"Now you have, so pay attention to your lesson."

"It's ok. Auntie Tigress won't notice me at all."

"Who are you calling Auntie Tigress?" Donghyuck heard a scary female voice from the background.

"I'll call you..." Mark's line went dead.

Donghyuck couldn't help but laugh at Mark's antic. The older male could always bring a smile to his face, somehow. When he got back to the friend group, Donghyuck was interrupted again by another call. Everyone teases him for being so popular. Donghyuck only rolls his eyes and answers the call. Apparently, it was Chenle and the later want to take Donghyuck somewhere. Although Chenlekept the location vague, Donghyuck could tell that his best friend is up to no good. He agreed to come along only to keep an eye on the guy in case he got in trouble.

"Where are you taking me?" Donghyuck asked as the two of them walk down an unfamiliar part of the campus.

"It's a secret..." Chenle kept on being vague.

"At least tell me what we'll be doing. I don't want anything to do with drugs."

"You know me for a hella long time and you know I hate drugs. If you must know, we're in the Medicine department."

"What the hell are we doing here?"

"So I can see my Rennie..."

The two freshmen sneaked around for a bit before Chenle found the classroom he has been looking for. The door to the classroom has medium size circular window so the two freshmen could peek in. Inside, they could see Mark, Renjun, and Jaemin sitting in the third row from the front of the class. Donghyuck remembers the Auntie Tigress that got Mark in trouble and shivered in fear as he sees her in person. The elderly lady looked mean and serious about the lesson she's currently explaining.

"There he is..." Chenle grinned. He got out his phone and typed something.

Renjun suddenly feels a buzz in his pocket and check his phone. Apparently, the tall freshman sent Renjun a message saying something. The sophomore looked around but couldn't find his target. Chenle was so entranced in watching Renjun that he gave Donghyuck his phone unconsciously. The latter read the message that Chenle sent to Renjun.

To Rennie:

When you are concentrating, you're kinda cute. But don't frown, or else you'll get wrinkles faster.

Donghyuck mentally rolls his eyes for the thousandth time today. Just as Donghyuck looked up from the phone, Auntie Tigress wrapped up her lesson and dismissed the class. The two freshmen panicked a little and ran away, not wanting their crush to see them. Although Donghyuck is huffing and puffing, Chenle couldn't help but giggle and laugh out of sheer joy. The two of them stop at a bench just outside of the Medicine department.

"What kind of game are you playing at?" Donghyuck lightly punched his best friend's shoulder.

"I brought you along so you can see your precious Mark while I get to see my precious Renjun," Chenle calmed down from his laughing fit.

"Well, it was pretty obvious that you were watching Renjun hyung."

"Does he pass?"

"Pass what?"

"What? Are you serious?" Donghyuck almost yelled out loud when he came to the realization at what Chenle is insinuated.

"Yes I am," The taller freshman got a little serious. "Before I get serious with someone, you have to pass them first. Can't you remember? It's our own bro code."

"Since when?"

"I... don't know either... When I used to help you get together with Mark, Renjun was in the way and he just kept on showing up. Even though he is obviously not my type. Shorter than me, rough tsundere, and hot-headed. Before I realized it, I already like him, especially when he's mad. It's weird."

Donghyuck listened to his friend rant about his first male crush. He was happy that Chenle is serious about getting into a relationship with someone. The guy is growing up and growing out of his player phase. Donghyuck accidentally glances at his watch and sees the time. "Oh damn, Chenle, take me back to the dorm. HURRY!"

Ya boy is finally done with Organic chemistry. My whole second year in college was taken over by Organic chemistry. I hated that class but I have to pretend to love it in order to crawl through the midterms and finals. One of my friends love that damn class and she made it look so easy. Funny thing is that she and another one of my friend got sick during the last final for O chem and I was the only healthy one. It's funny because the week before, I was sick, which cause me to ache all over with dizziness and headache.

Comment below if you like the chapter or your struggles in college, especially if it's O Chem.

P.S if anyone follows Thai gay drama. How are you feeling about "Love By Chance" airing being pushed back? I am mad and impatient because I thought the delay would only be a day or week but it has been a whole month. I need someone to rant to.

FIGHTING!!!

Chapter 23: I just finished this and OMG what a ride it has been. The content, storyline and character development are all relatable in a scary way, but unlike them reality is not as kind to me. Nonetheless, being able to lose myself in such idealistic world that I have no doubt other readers experienced too when they read this story serves as the highest compliment, the most adoring praise and the brightest testament to the ablity of the creator of such masterpiece. Thank you for sharing it with us.
