As you may know, going to a foreign country is quite complicated if you don't know more than basic greetings or how to ask for a few things. One thing you'll encounter in Korea is getting lost or not knowing how to get to a location. This is very important to learn if you plan on browsing for places like a salon or a restaurant and other sorts. 

Como puedes saber, yendo a un pais extranjero puede ser complicado si no te sabes mas que los saludos basicos o como preguntar por algunas cosas. Una cosa que te encontraras en Corea es estar perdido o no saber como llegar a una ubicacion. Esto es muy importante para aprender si planeas navegar lugares como un salon o restaurante y otros lugares.

This is the formal way to ask for a direction / Esta es la forma formal para preguntar una direccion : 

_______ 어디 있어요? - (place / lugar) uh-di isseoyo? - Where is _____ ? / Donde queda _____ ?

For example / Por Ejemplo: 

강남역 어디 있어요? - gangnamyug uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is Gangnam Station? / Donde queda Gangnam Station?

홍대 어디 있어요? - hongdae uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is Hongdae? / Donde queda Hongdae?

You can use the previous phrase for other nouns. For example / Puedes usar las frases anteriores para otros sustantivos, Por Ejemplo:

화장실 어디 있어요? - hwajangseel uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is the bathroom? / Donde queda el baño?

제 친구 어디 있어요? - je cheen-goo uh-di  i-seoyo? - Where is my friend? / Donde esta mi amigo/a?

If you're looking for the nearest place / Si estas buscando el lugar mas cercano: 

제일 가까운 _______ 어디 있어요? - je-eel ga-gga-on (place / lugar) uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is the nearest ______? / Donde esta el/la ______ mas cercano/a?

For Example / Por Ejemplo:

제일 가까운 시장 어디 있어요? - je-eel ga-gga-on shijang uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is the nearest market? / Donde esta el mercado mas cercano?

제일 가까운 지하철역 어디 있어요? - je-eel ga-gga-on jiha-cheol-yog uh-di i-seoyo? - Where is the nearest subway station? / Donde queda la estacion del metro mas cercana?

In the worst case, the kind stranger may also not be familiar with the area. They may say something like / En el peor caso, el extraño tambien puede no estar familiarizado con el area. Pueden decir algo como :

죄송하지만, 저도 몰라요. - Jwesonghajiman, juh-do mollayo. - I’m sorry, but I don’t know either. / Lo siento, No se tampoco.

In the best case, the kind stranger will give you directions. It can be as simple as:

쭉 가시면 홍대역이 나올거에요. - Jjook gashimyun hongdaeyukee naolguhaeyo. - If you go straight, Hongdae Station will appear. / Si sigues derecho, aparecera Hongdae Station.

Or it can be more complex / O puede ser mas complejo:

저 음식점  보이지요? - Jeo oom-sig-jom bo-i-jiyo? - Do you see that restaurant? / Ves ese restaurante?

거기에서 우회전 하세요. Goh-gi-ae-soh oo-hwae-jeon haseyo. Turn right there. / Dobla a la derecha.

직진하시면 우체국이 고등학교 건너편에 있어요. - Jikjinhashimyun oo-chae-gook-ee go-deung-hakgyo geon-no-pyeon-ae i-seoyo. - Walk straight and you’ll see the post office across from the high school. / Sigue derecho y veras la oficina de correo delante la escuela secundaria.

서울시장 지날거예요. - Seoul-shijang jinal-geo-yeyo. -You’ll pass by Seoul Market. / Pasaras por Seoul Market.

은행옆 이층에 있어요. - Oon-haeng-ip i-jung-ae i-seoyo. - It’ll be on the second floor next to the bank. / Estara en el segundo piso del banco.

Don’t understand every single word the kind stranger says? Listen for the following keywords to get a clearer idea / No entiendes lo que dice el extraño? Escucha a las palabras clave para tener una idea mas clara:

좌회전. - jwa-hwae-jeon - turn left / dobla a la izquierda
우회전. - ooh-hwae-jeon - turn right / dobla a la derecha
직진.- jikjin - go straight / sigue derecho
쭉. - jjook - straight / derecho
근처에. -  geunchuhae - nearby / cerca
에서.- aesuh - at / donde
옆에. - yupae - next to / al lado de
다음. - da-eum- next / siguiente
지나서.  - jina-seo - pass by / pasar a

길. - gil - road or street /  carretera o calle
사거리. -  sa-geo-ri - intersection
신호등. - shinhodeung - traffic light / semaforo
방향. - banghyang - direction / direccion
반대쪽. -  bandaejjok - opposite / lo opuesto
층. - cheung - floor / piso

1층.  - il cheung - first floor / primer piso
2층. - ee cheung - second floor / segundo piso
3층. - sam cheung - third floor / tercer piso

Is what you’re looking for near or far? / Estas buscando algo cercano o lejano?

가까워요? - Ga-gga-woyo? - Is it close? / Esta cerca?

This question may be turned into a statement / Esta pregunta se puede convertir en una declaracion:

가까워요. - Ga-gga-woyo. -It is close / Esta cerca.

For questions, raise the YO up. For statements, pronounce the YO down / Para preguntas, sube el tono de YO. Para declaracion, pronuncia en YO en tono bajo:

멀어요? -  Meor-eo-yo? - Is it far? / Esta lejos?

멀어요. - Meor-eo-yo. - It is far. / Esta lejos.

They might say yes or no to your question. 네 (ne) means yes and 아니요 (aniyo) means no. Let’s get a little more specific / Quizas te pueden decir si o on a tu pregunta. 네 (ne) significa si y 아니요 (aniyo) signinifica que no. Vamos a ser mas especificos:

몇 분 걸릴까요? - Myeot boon gul-lilggayo? - How many minutes will it take? / Como cuantos minutos me cogera?

걸어서 오분 걸려요.. - Geol-eo-seo o-boon gool-yeo-yo. - It’ll take five minutes to walk.  / 5 minutos a pie.

걸어서 이십분 걸려요. - Geol-eo-seo i-ship-boon gool-yeo-yo. - It’ll take twenty minutes to walk. / 20 minutos a pie.

Wanna ask the kind stranger to sketch you a map? / Queres preguntarle al extraño que te dibuje un mapa? :

지도 그려 주실 수 있어요? - Jido geu-lyo ju-shil su i-seoyo? - Can you draw me a map? / Me puedes dibujar un mapa?

You’re on your way to your destination. Did you get lost? Pull out a map and ask someone:

여기 어디예요? - Yeogi uhdiyeyo? - Where am I? / Donde estoy ahora?
