Chapter 2: Wheein

Dimple Couple

[The story takes place in the outskirts of Daegu. Once you enter Jooheon’s grandmother’s front gate there is a small cottage with a large sign hanging over the front door saying ‘Lee’s Day Care Centre’. Following the rocky path, you are surrounded by tress and a field of flower that splits imperfectly by the pathway to the relatively large and poor-looking traditional house. However, contradicting to the exterior of the house, the interior is beautifully decorated with furniture that probably costs more than the home itself.

Wheein appears from one of the bedroom and sees Jooheon’s grandmother running about in the kitchen.]

Wheein: Halmeoni, what are you doing? It’s Saturday! The kids are not coming today

Grandmother: oh, Wheein-ah, good morning! This is not for the kids. Can you go to that room [points at the bedroom opposite Wheein’s] and check if everything is organized?

[Wheein does as she is told and enters the room. It is filled with musical equipment and boxes with nearly no space to move. The last time Wheein saw this room, it was completely empty except for a bed and a few framed photos. She starts unpacking the boxes of male clothes into the closet. Once she is done unpacking she rejoins Jooheon’s grandmother in the kitchen.]

Wheein: Halmeoni, who is coming to live with us?

Grandmother: [while preparing gimbap] my grandson. You know, the famous one?

Wheein: Of course, you never stop talking about him

Grandmother [chuckles]: Yes, that grandson. He will be living with us for a few months.

Wheein: Why? Did something happen?

Grandmother: Apparently he got into a fight with someone.

Wheein: ouch. How bad is it?

Grandmother: Oh, he is okay. It is the guy that he beat up that is not. His CEO wants him to lay low for now.

Wheein: Are you mad at him?

Grandmother: No, I am disappointed. He threw everything he loved away for what? [she suppresses her tears] When he was younger, he loved rapping so much that he practiced everyday. He would come home from school and instead of studying, he’d start practicing until it was bed time. [she chuckles] He came last at school all the time. He got in so much trouble with his parents, but I would always stand up for him because I could see it in his eyes how passionate his is about it. [a tear runs down her cheeks]

[Wheein gets up from the other side of the counter to where she is and places a hand on the back of Jooehon’s grandmother.]

Wheein: Don’t worry, halmeoni. You said he is coming here for a few months right? I’m sure he will be able to find that passion again. It’s okay. [She draw circles on her back with her palm]

[Jooheon’s grandmother wipes away her tears and continues to finish making gimbap. Wheein helps her set the table for 5.]
