Dead

Lost & Found

*Lengthy/slow chapter*

Pitch black.

You tried looking around but you couldn’t see anything, it was as if you had your eyes closed. Lifting your hands, you looked down to check if you were able to see them. Nothing. Frantically, you clasp your hand together and began to touch your body, checking to see if you were physically there or not. It felt cold. Hands trembling, you lifted your hands once more and gently touched your eyelids.

“Am I blind…?” You asked yourself, hands trembling.

As you were examining your eyes with your hands, you heard a soft weeping behind you. Slowly turning your body, you saw a glimpse of light flashing before your eyes. Unconditionally, your legs began to slowly carry you towards the light. The weeping continued, getting louder and louder each step you took but why?

Why are you strongly drawn to the sobbing?

As you approached the dim light, you noticed a child with long black hair, sitting on the floor with her hands hugging her knees, head tucked in.

“Hey, Wha-” You quickly covered your mouth before touching your throat, eyes wide open.

Your voice was gone.

Her sobbing continued, snapping your attention back to her.  Although you couldn’t speak, you had hands. Closing in on her, you reached out your hands and grabbed her shoulders. Barely touching her shoulders, the girl swiftly slapped your hands away, making you pull your hands back on impulse.

Looking down at your hands, the sobbing continued. She was still crying, holding onto her knees. You couldn’t just leave her in a place like this. There was nothing, but her. She was the only thing that existed, sitting in the middle of the white empty space.

Reaching out your hands, you rested it lightly on her shoulders. Come on, let’s get outta here.

You thought to yourself as you looked down at her.

Suddenly, you felt her shaking. “I told you ...”, the voice was trembling and low, making you turn back to lean closer to her. What did you say?

“I told you to leave me alone!!!,” the little girl harshly yelled as she pushed you back forcing you to fall backward and land on your bottom. The last thing you saw was her running into the dark. Her figure slowly disappeared, as if she has been engulfed by the darkness.  slowly fell down the white space that gradually became black again.

Jumping out of your sleep, you began to pant heavily as you clenched your shirt. Surveilling the area, you noticed the street lights turning on. You looked around the empty and dark park before getting up from the bench.

“How long was I asleep?” You thought to yourself as you reached your arms up towards the sky, stretching your body.

“What was I doing here anyways?” You mumbled to yourself, furrowing your brows as you tried to remember.

But for some strange reason, you do not know why you couldn’t remember. No matter how hard you thought about it, nothing came to mind. The last thing you remember was that you went to school and you were heading home… and nothing more than that. Everything else was a blur. …But the question is,  did you even go to school today?

Touching your shoulders, you tried to look for your backpack.

“Where’s my backpack?” You questioned, twirling around in a circle in search of your bag that might’ve been on the floor.

“It’s probably at home then.” You concluded, tossing the fact that you didn’t even remember what you did today.

“Time to head home.”

Walking along the sidewalk, you couldn't help but think about the vivid dream you had earlier. Although you were not able to see the girl’s face, you had a feeling that she might’ve been you. Her voice was similar to yours when you were a child but then again, it was just a dream. As you were thinking about the dream, suddenly, a dog began to bark at you as you were trying to turn into your house, snapping you back into reality.

“One day I am going to do something about that dog…” You growled at the abnormally large white husky as you climbed up the small flight of stairs that lead towards the front door of your house.

“Strange,” You tilted your head a little in confusion, “why is the front door wide open?”

“Mom! You shouldn’t leave the front door open like that! What if someone come into the house?! ” You shouted, closing the door behind you and locking it.

As you walked through the hallways, you began to hear light weeping coming from the living room.  It sounded like your mother.

“Mom? Are you okay? What’s wrong?” You quickly scurried into the living room, finding your mother on the floor crying as your father hovered over her, pulling her hand upwards.

“Mom!” You screamed, rushing over beside her.

“Honey, please get up…” Your father began to pull your mother’s hand up, voice cracking a little.

“Don’t touch me!” She shoved your father, making him stumble over his foot and fall to the floor.

“What are you doing mom!?” You questioned as your eyes shifted towards your father who was groaning in pain as he tried to push himself upwards.

You rushed over to your father’s side and lifted your hands and tried to place your hands over his shoulder. As you placed your hands on top of your father’s shoulder, you felt a strong electrical static shock,  making you flinch in pain, forcing you to pull your hands away from him. Before you could question what had happened, you heard your father bang his hand on the wooden floor.

“Please!” He pleaded, voice trembling, “I know it’s hard right now but can you please come back to your senses!”

“I am in my senses!” She screamed in reply, turning her head to face your father.

“No! You’re not! You’ve barely eaten ever since she passed away!”

“She is not dead!Just leave me alone!” She cried, hugging a picture frame in her arms.

Your father pushed himself off the floor and stomped his way towards your mother. Your mother tightened her grip as she shut her eyes closed while your father aggressively pulled your mother’s wrist.

“W-Wait! Dad stop!!” Your voice cracked, you stood in front of them, unable to do anything.

“Let go!” She screamed, trying to pull away from his grip.

“I told you to come back to your senses!”

Your father tugged your mother’s wrist once more, but with greater force, pulling her into an embrace. Surprised by the sudden pull, the picture that she was holding flew out of her hand and onto the floor. Kneeling down, you carefully grabbed the picture frame, that was faced down, and turned it around.

It was a picture of you.

“Mom, why are you holding onto this?” You asked, turning your head to face them.

Struggling to free herself, your mother turned her head and was petrified.

“Y/N !!” She burst in tears, shoving and pushing your father who was still hugging her.

“Let me go! Y/N is on the floor!! I have to pick her up right now!!”

“I-It’s okay, I can get up myself mom!” You stuttered, pulling yourself quickly off the floor as you stood in front of her, leaving the picture frame on the floor.

Giving her husband her hardest push, your mother freed herself and frantically ran over to the picture that was on the floor before grabbing it and hugging it close to her body.

“Are you okay? Mommy is here now.” She began to dust off the dirt off the picture, gently touching the frame with care.

“But I am right here,” You closed the gap between the two of you. As you reached over and touched your mother’s shoulder, you saw a flashing light, followed by the same strong electrical shock that you had felt earlier, making you flinch and pull your hand back.

“What the hell was that…?” You thought to yourself as you stared at your burning hand.

“Stop this right now!” Your father raised his voice, catching your attention.

“If Y/N was here and saw what you are doing, she would cry her eyes out!”

“But Y/N is right here! She’s smiling at me! Look honey!” Your mother smiled as tears rolled down her red eyes, showing your father the picture of you.

Without looking at the picture, your father slapped the picture out of your mother’s hand and yelled, “SHE IS DEAD! WHY CAN’T YOU ACCEPT THAT ALREADY!?”

“H-Honey what are you doing!” She yelled, crawling over to the picture that had been tossed across the living room.

“Dead?” You thought to yourself, “But dad, I am right he-”. Before you could finish your sentence, you looked turned your head to your left to where your father was standing and noticed a mirror beside him.

Your reflexion was not there.

It was the only the relfextion of your father, who had tears streaming down his cheek while you were nowhere in sight.

“W-W-What the hell is going on?!” You rushed over to the giant mirror that was hanging above your couch and grabbed it, pulling your face closer to the mirror.

“Where is my reflection!?” You screamed as you analyzed the mirror in awestruck.

“She’s not dead.” Your mother proclaimed, making both you and your father turn over to look at her.

“It’s been almost two weeks since she’s been missing,”

“You’re wrong...” Your mother argued as she the picture with her right hand gently.

Your father took a deep breath in before exhaling. Bringing both of his hands towards his face, he wiped his tears before walking to the couch to grab his jacket. He felt like there was nothing for him to say for your mother to snap back into reality and left the house, slamming the door behind him.

“Am I dead?” You looked down to your hands before turning to look back at the mirror.

“Y/N…” Your mom cried out, hugging the picture.

“Please come back home…”

“What am I supposed to do?” Placing your hands on yourself,  you wandered through the dark streets as you hugged yourself.

Turning the corner, you crossed the street and entered the main streets. You couldn’t help but stare into space as you walked down the street. You felt tiny shocks each time you bumped into people or when you walked through them. But compared to when you tried to touch your parents, the shocks did not hurt.

“Thank you!” A young woman, wearing a long black fur coat and long black pants, bowed her head to the store owner who walked her out and thanked him before exiting out of the store.

You watched as she smiled widely to herself, carrying large bags filled with expensive clothing. Turning to your left, you looked into the store that she came out of. Everything in the store was luxurious, the walls was a milky white color, marbled stone floors, and the workers were well dressed as if they were going to a wealthy party.

Placing your hands on the window, your eyes that were focused into the store slowly blurred as your focus turned to the window, which did not show your reflection.  Lifting your cold hands, you placed it over your heart.

Your heart wasn’t beating.

Well, you’re not too surprised. Ever since the incident from earlier and what your parents were saying, you figured that you are probably dead already.

Slowly sliding your fingers down the glass, you continued to walk down the busy street as you began to think about the situation and what you should do.

“I need to find my body…” You finally concluded, kicking the tiny stones that were on the sidewalk on the road.

As you continued to wander the streets, you didn’t notice a  tall boy with silky black hair, wearing a school uniform walking towards your direction,  who was looking down at his phone in one hand and his school bag in the other.  Crashing into each other,  you couldn’t help but fall backward, landing on your buttocks. On the other hand, the boy dropped his phone and only took a step back because of the impact.

“What the hell is your problem! Are you blind or something!”  You hissed without looking at the person, you were too busy trying to push yourself upwards.

“Oh yeah…” You placed your hand over your mouth as you realized something important.

No one can see you. You’re dead.

As you were lifting yourself up, you began to feel sharp pain after the fall. Lifting your hands in front of you, you felt pain from not only your hands but also your .

“Am I supposed to feel pain?” You thought to yourself as you stared deeply at your hands.

“Are you serious right now?!” The boy swiftly bent over and picked up his cracked phone.

It was Chanyeol.

Chanyeol goes to your school and was in your class. Unlike you, Chanyeol is not popular but handsome, to you at least. After school, he would play card games with his best friends in the library. He is also the boy you’ve been having your eyes on.

You watched as Chanyeol flipped his phone around in his hand, observing the cracks on his screen and clicking the buttons to check if it was working.

“Whatever, it’s not like I can apologize anyways.”

As you were about to get up from the floor, you felt a hand grabbing your arm, pulling you upwards and making you land on your feet. You stood there as you stared at Chanyeol as he glared down at you, holding his phone up in front of your face.

“Pay for this.” He waved his phone in front of you in a sharp tone.

“Wait... what?”

“I said pay for this. Do you think you can just bump into me and drop my phone?”

“You can see me…?” You asked, voice cracking.

“Are you dumb? Why wouldn’t I see you?” He raised his brows, crossing his arms.

“But that’s not the point, pay attention when you’re walking, quit lookin’ at the ground as you are walking.”

“What the hell?” You grumbled, glaring at him. Ignoring the fact that he could see you, you began to quarrel with him in the middle of the streets.

“What do you mean I have to pay attention? Didn’t you also bump into me? You should also watch where you’re going!” You shouted, pointing your finger at him.

“I did pay attention! I moved over a little for you but instead, you still ran into me!”  He protested, poking the middle of your forehead, making you tilt your head back.

As the both of you continued to argue, the two of you did not notice the people who were circling around you the both of you, whispering to each other and taking pictures and videos.

“Who is that boy yelling at?” A child asked, pointing at Chanyeol who’s face was red and his ears were burning.

“Don’t look at him.” The mother of the child pulled her hand and walked away, catching Chanyeol’s attention.

The both of you looked around and notice people who had circled around the two of you, taking pictures.

“Why is everyone taking pictures?” Chanyeol swiftly scanned the area in confusion.

You couldn’t help but facepalm yourself as you realized that no one could see you except for Chanyeol. Now because of you, Chanyeol looks crazy.  For someone to scream at completely no one was absurd.

“Hey Chanyeol,” you pulled his sleeve, “ I  think we should leave.”

“Leave? Pay for my phone first!!” He continued, making you lower your head in second-hand embarrassment.

“What’s going on?” A middle-aged police officer pushed his way through the crowd and walked over towards Chanyeol.

“She broke my phone officer!” He grumbled, pointing at you.

“Who?” The police officer furrowed his brows as he looked at the place where Chanyeol pointed.

“There’s no one there.”

“Woah, are you serious? She’s standing right in front of you! She ran into me and dropped my phone. I told her to pay for it but she’s refusing to pay for my broken screen and is telling me to apologize to her.”

“HUH?” You shot a glare at him before yelling, “How are you going to ask a ghost to pay for your stupid phone! That’s your fault!”
“A ghost?” He huffed, “Are you 12 years old? Do you think no one can see you? Look around, everyone is staring at the both of us, not just me.”

“You’re the one that’s 12!”

As the two of you continued to argue, the police officer couldn’t help but stand there in confusion as he watched Chanyeol yell at no one while he waved his phone around. His voice continued to get louder and louder each time. Convinced that Chanyeol was drunk, the police office tapped Chanyeol’s shoulder.

“You’re drunk. Please step this way so I can smell you.” He pointed to the right side.

Ignoring the police officer, Chanyeol continued to yell and wave his arms around. Everyone around him couldn’t help but whisper and take videos.

“Is he mental?” A man asked, pointing at Chanyeol.

“He’s probably drunk, plus he has a high school uniform on.” Another whispered.

“Alright, alright,” The police officer said, grabbing Chanyeol’s shoulder and pulled him back.

“WHAT DO YOU WANT!?” Chanyeol screamed his lungs out at the officer.

Right after shouting at the man, Chanyeol quickly placed both of his hands over his mouth and looked at the police officer, eyes widen.Showing a kind smile, the police officer looked at Chanyeol and asked in a sweet voice, “What the hell did you just say to me?"

“I-I’m so sorry officer!” Chanyeol stuttered, flusteredly waving his hands around as he took a few steps back.

Lifting his arms up, the police officer smacked Chanyeol’s head and began to yell at him.

“Not only you’re causing a huge commotion but you’re yelling at a police officer?!”

“But I am arguing with someone right now~” He whined, rubbing the top of his head.

“Are you drunk? There’s no one there!”
“She’s right there” Chanyeol pointed at you. You couldn’t help but hold in your laugh.

Smacking Chanyeol’s head once again, the police officer yelled, “I may be old but do I look stupid to you?!”

“Enough,” He scratched his head, “come here and let me smell your breath.”

“I am only a high schooler, why would I be drunk?!” Chanyeol argued, pushing the man off of him gently.

“It all starts when they are young and dumb. High schoolers are already doing drugs, why wouldn’t they drink. Now, let me check.”

Before the police officer could grab him, Chanyeol turned over to you and as he was about to look at you, he paused and stared at the window of the store.

You had no reflection.

“Y-Y-You…?!” He stuttered, pointing at the window and at you, back and forth. You could see the fear in his eyes.

“I told you! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.” You nagged, placing your hands on your hips, stepping closer to him.

“Please look over here and open your mouth!” The officer commanded, grabbing his face and turning it to face him.

Before Chanyeol could open his mouth for the officer to smell his breath, he aggressively pushed the man away from him and shoved his way through the crowd, running towards the neighborhood.

“Hey! Wait!” The officer yelled after Chanyeol, but he had already disappeared into the crowd.

***

Chanyeol turned his head once more to check before coming to a complete stop. Placing his hands on his knees, Chanyeol tried to catch his breath as he tried to wipe his sweat.

“What the hell was she…?” He huffed, as he looked around once again.

Although he didn’t believe in ghosts, he couldn’t think of another explanation to explain what he had seen in the window.

“I should just hurry home.” Pulling himself up, he quickly walked through the dark neighborhood.

Faint footsteps slowly followed Chanyeol as he continued to walk. As the footsteps got louder, he could feel his palms begin to feel sweaty.

“Chanyeol, ignore it and walk. Ignore it Chanyeol.” He repeated to himself, closing his eyes.

As he opened his eyes, you appeared in front of him, smiling and waving your hands. Surprised by your sudden appearance, Chanyeol jumped a little as he cursed out loud.

“Oh my gosh.” Chanyeol placed his hand over his heart before quickly going around you as he fastens his pace.

“Hey! Chanyeol wait!”

Compared to a few minutes, he was afraid. But for some reason, although he was afraid of you, he had a feeling that you weren’t going to do anything horrible to him. It was just the fact that this is not something a normal person can see or hear.

“Please! You’re the only who can see me! Hey! Park Chanyeol!!” You screamed for the last time, making him stop and turn his head.

“How do you know my name?” He questioned, eyes shaking.

“Why wouldn’t I know your name? We are in the same class!”

Chanyeol quickly rushed over and bent down as he scanned you from head to toe, brushing off the fact that he was afraid of you.

“Are you sure? I don’t think I know anyone in my class that had passed away and became a ghost though…”

You let out a heavy sigh before lifting your long hair upwards as if you were about to tie your hair into a ponytail.

“It’s me, Y/N!”  You rolled your eyes as you released your hair.

“I know that I never let my hair down at school before but can you please at least remember my face.”

“Y/N….?” Chanyeol repeated, pointing at you and you nodded your head with a smile.

“W-What? How can this be? I thought you went missing…?” He question, in a very low and mournful tone.

“I didn’t even know that I went missing.” You shrugged.
“How do you not know that? You’ve been missing for some time already.”

“I can’t remember anything…”

“Then how do you remember me?” Chanyeol questioned furrowing his brows.

“I mean I don’t have any memories of me going missing or anything but I remember people.”

Chanyeol couldn’t help but stand there and think about the situation for a minute.

“Wait so… are you dead?”

“I could be.” You bluntly stated, giving him a smile.

“So to confirm if I am dead or what not, you are going to help me.” You placed your cold hand on his shoulder and gave him a pat.

“HUH!?” Chanyeol slapped your hand away from his shoulder as he glared down at you.

“Who said I am going to help you? Just hurry up and go to heaven already!!”  Chanyeol stomped around you and began to walk away.

Just as Chanyeol was about to turn a corner, he felt a strong grip on his school’s jacket, pulling him back. You looked up and into his eyes as he also looked down into yours.

“You’re the only one that can help me.”
