Lucky Jacket

Eunhae: The Trainee

“Eunhyuk, hurry it up will you!? We have to leave soon and you still haven’t even finished packing!” A rather impatient Leeteuk yelled at his dongsaeng, stomping his feet and swinging his arms about like a spoiled child.

“I frickin know that, dude! I’ll be quick!” Eunhyuk glared at his elder. “You won’t die in five minutes, gosh!!!” He swiftly added before darting through the corridors towards their dance studio.

Lee Hyukjae, known as Eunhyuk by most people was a successful dance instructor who became well known for taking countless eager young children under his wing and turning them into rising starts, alongside his close friend Leeteuk.

Due to their sudden break through and recognition, he and his comrade were offered irresistible jobs in becoming choreographers for famous bands in South Korea’s lovely capital Seoul.

Though at first the two were sceptical in accepting the job as it would mean that they were going to have to sell their mini studio that holds many precious memories, but in the end they decided to take the chance and see where life takes them.

It was their final night working with their loyal students as the following day they will be leaving for their new and hopefully exciting lives. After all of the trainees have said their final goodbyes through heart-melting tears, they isolated the building, leaving only Eunhyuk and Leeteuk to say their own last words to the studio that was like home to them. But once they too were about to make their leave, the younger male realized he had forgotten his jacket back in their studio and because he didn’t want to abandon  his treasured piece of clothing that he considered to be lucky, Eunhyuk viciously hurried back.

The juvenile male speedily ran, coming across faint sounds of booming music parading from ahead and as he drew closer he noticed that it was one of his mixtapes being played from their studio. Once Eunhyuk approached the door he was hesitant to go inside for he was pretty sure that besides him and Leeteuk, no one should be in the building apart from the janitor maybe.

But being curious as to who was most likely dancing at that late hour, he cautiously nudged open the door -although the music was playing so loudly that even if he had kicked it open the unknown individual inside wouldn’t have heard him- and nosily poked his head inside.

To Eunhyuk’s delight his eyes rested upon one of his young trainees dancing away to the last routine that he had taught, the gifted boy’s swift and sharp movements sprinkling his skin with goosebumps and making his eyes sparkle in adoration. It was actually the first time Eunhyuk could observe him properly without having other annoying kids all in the way.

Though it was considered wrong for teachers to have their favourite student, Eunhyuk couldn’t help but fall in love with that boy who overflows with energy and confidence every time he enters the studio. The way he smiles when he understands perfectly how to portray certain movements, the way he chuckles when he is praised for doing a good job and the way he simply twirls around with far more enthusiasm and skill than any of the other kids, it all makes Hyuk unbelievably happy to know such a boy. There was just something about him that nips Eunhyuk’s interest.

He knows that one day that kid was going to become a star for not only was he a talented dancer but also an amazing singer with looks that virtually no one could ever resist and is a wonderful down-to-earth person altogether. Sometimes Eunhyuk can’t help but wonder how things would be if that boy wasn’t 15… After all… he is absolutely adorable.

Although of course it isn’t actually love that Eunhyuk feels towards the other, but more like admiration or something along those lines… he wants things to remain legal as let’s not forget the kid is still underage.

“Yah, Donghae, what are you doing here?” He inquired once the music came to an end, entering the large echoing room flooded with enormous mirrors.

Alarmed by the unforeseen guest, the trainee spun round after jolting and releasing a surprised gasp.

“H-Hyung…?” Donghae’s cute little stutter provoked the older one to smile. “I-I’m just… uh… nothing.” He answered the question with an obvious lie, his nervous gaze shooting downwards to peer at his restless feet that pretended to kick an imaginary stone.

Eunhyuk sensed that something was out of the ordinary once their eye contact was practically dodged by other. True, Donghae was on the more emotional side however it wasn’t in his character to be uneasy around people he knows well, friend or teacher.

The elder noticed that fastened securely around the boy’s slim waist was his lucky jacket, its long sleeves dangling past his crotch and almost reaching his knees. At least the clothing would’ve been in good hands if Hyuk had actually left it behind for Hae does take care of his possessions.

“The others have left hours ago. Shouldn’t be you too be at home? Don’t tell me you’re still training.” Hyuk chuckled as he ruffled the boy’s messy hair.

That friendly gesture made Donghae look up although once their eyes met Eunhyuk’s smile was suddenly stolen from him as he noticed the young boy’s expressive eyes started to glisten like crystals from the tears that began to suddenly dwell within them. Hyuk retrieved his hand to grip the young one’s shoulder in concern.

“Donghae, what’s wrong?” He asked as softly as he could to hide his worry.

“Why are you leaving…?” Hae released his own question in a shaky voice that almost penetrated the other’s heart.

“W-Well… I-I told you that I’ve… been offered a new j-”

“I know that but… why can’t you just say no and stay? Don’t you care about us, your team anymore?” That inquiry made the elder blink in surprise, pausing momentarily to ponder over his reply to make sure he wouldn’t say something wrong to hurt the young one in any way.

“Of course I care about you guys. You all mean so much to me and you know that. Besides I’m not going to let my team split up that easily. My buddy Shindong will be taking over, remember?” Eunhyuk tried reasoning with him yet it was obvious that his words weren’t doing enough to calm him down.

“But I don’t want Shindong. I want you.” The young boy gripped his elder’s shirt and buried his face into the cushiony material that got instantly soaked by the liquids on his cheeks.

“I want you stay and continue teaching us, I want to learn everything from you so that you can see me improve and I want to make you proud. I can’t stand it when you can’t make it to one session and we get a replacement, never mind actually leaving us for good. No one could ever replace you so please don’t go… please.” The boy’s cheerless tone and desperate pleas worried Eunhyuk. It certainly wasn’t like Donghae to be so upset… at least not in front of other people.

He just didn’t know how to break it to the young boy that it was already too late. There was no possible way that he could remain with his trainees any longer. Even if he actually wanted to stay… it was virtually impossible at that point.

Hyuk sighed aloud to mask his own tears that were gradually building up; the uncomfortable position he was in launched various emotions -ones that he tries to avoid taunting with- to start piling up at the pit of his stomach.

“Kid… you know I can’t do that.” Hyuk refused to embrace the boy as he was sure that once he does so, he too will instantly start crying. This boy surely knows how to mix up his feelings and bring them to the surface.

Donghae slightly pulled away so that his voice will no longer get muffled into his hyung’s clothing, panting softly due to his runny nose and instinctively rubbing his watery eyes to improve his vision.

“Well… what if I told you that I… I loved you?” Eunhyuk’s eyes instantaneously widened in shock at the unexpected confession, mouth falling open, body freezing yet mind gushing with words that don’t make any sense in the slightest.

Absorbing his hyung’s bewildered state, Donghae abused his bottom lip with his sharp teeth whilst his eyebrows rose in distress. He started having second thoughts of his declaration, but he knew that that was the very last chance he was ever going to be able to tell Eunhyuk how he felt about him. It was now or never to spill it all out.

Yet even if he chickens out at the last minute and decides not to tell anymore, he had already said far too much for his own liking, it was too late to run and hide now. Because Hae had already started he was more than obligated to finish. He just wished that Eunhyuk would at least show some sort of emotion or at least looked at him.

“I remember when I heard about your dance class for the first time. At first I didn’t really want to go because I thought it was going to be a lot of work but… when I saw you were going to be our instructor I decided to join. You are a lot of fun and an amazing person to have around. You are funny, energetic, handsome and I just adore your gummy smile.” Donghae chuckled lightly to himself.

However just as he was about to part his lips to continue, a rather displeased Eunhyuk forced himself to speak up before the other got the chance to.

“Don’t say things like that!” Hyuk spat out sharply, gripping the boy by his slender arms and pulling him away. Despite his angered tone, his eyes seemed to show no signs of fury although they weren’t all too pleased either.

“Donghae, do you even understand what you’re saying? You’re 15 and I’m 20. How do think things will turn out if I actually returned your feelings? You’re still just a kid. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you so don’t tie yourself down for me, okay? There will be others… ones who are far better for you than me.” The elder laughed at the last part.

“But do you like me?” The boy didn’t want to give up just yet, praying that there still might be hope that Hyuk loves him back.

“Will it make any difference if I did? After today we won’t be seeing each other anymore.” Eunhyuk’s reply that was certainly full of truth made the young one frown in disappointment, sniffling and hugging himself in such a precious manner that Hyuk couldn’t help but smile.

“To me it will…” Donghae whispered meekly, clenching his eyes shut.

Love hurts. It really does. Especially when you fall for someone who is clearly out of your league or the age difference is too much to ignore. In their case, the two options suit them perfectly as both Eunhyuk and Donghae feel that the other honestly deserves far better than what they could possibly offer, not to mention if Hyuk does anything to the kid he could go to jail even though 5 years isn’t considered to be a massive difference. It was only because Donghae isn’t an adult.

To Hyuk, Donghae was more mature than most kids he’s met. And apart from being an extremely adorable person who appears fairly childish to most, Hae knows when playing time has stopped and when he should toughen up and be serious. That was one of the few things that he honours about the boy in his arms.

It was hard for Eunhyuk to grasp the fact that he will no longer be able to see that usual joyful smile. Final goodbyes are horrible, especially when you know that your paths won’t cross ever again. This was defiantly going to sting Hyuk.

Reclaiming his hands from Donghae’s trembling arms, Eunhyuk took hold of his clothing that was still latched around the boy’s body, fiddling with the minor knot to take it off. Realizing what Hyuk was doing, the younger male lunged to capture his hyung’s busy hands to refrain them from taking away the only memory he will have of Eunhyuk; however, he held his composure the last second and unwillingly allowed Hyuk to recover his jacket.

To his surprise, instead of sliding back into it, Eunhyuk threw his beloved jacket around Donghae’s tense shoulders and bent forward until he was about the same height as his dongsaeng. Hyuk cupped the boy’s face to his wet cheeks whilst thoughtfully brushing away the remains of those previous tears, a tender smile curling his lips as he stared into the young one’s flooded eyes.

Eunhyuk’s lids closed shut as he gently kissed the corner of Donghae’s delicate lips, pulling away shortly after.

“Hyung…” The younger male was confused about what had jsut took place.

“Keep the jacket. But take good care of it okay? I’ve had it for a very long time and it’s something very precious to me… like you.” Eunhyuk stood at full height, turning around to begin his leave as he was running late after all and Leeteuk will shower him with stupid complaints if he makes him wait longer than necessary.

“But will you ever came back!?” Donghae shouted once he came to terms with the fact that Hyuk was preparing to abandon him.

As Eunhyuk reached the door, he glanced over his shoulder at the young boy he cherished beyond words, fighting back his own persistent tears.

“When you turn 18… come and find me.” And with that, Hyuk deserted the now gloomy room leaving behind a young male who felt as if his chest hand mercilessly punched in.

“Bye, Donghae.” He whispered whilst finally unleashing those dreaded droplets. He tightly embraced himself for comfort as he slowly made his way back to his friend, feeling absolutely horrible for leaving such an amazing person behind.

“Bye… Eunhyuk,” Hae muttered under his breath as he snuggled into the clothing that smelled exactly like the male whose company he enjoys more than anything else in the world.

Donghae in a deep breath to fully absorb Eunhyuk unique scent, seating himself down and bringing his knees to his chest.

“See you soon,”
