Hope

The White Wolf

Yongguk ran, he ran as fast as he could towards the direction of the white wolf. He couldn’t believe that he would find it this soon. He couldn’t let this opportunity slip away just like that, no. Many lives were at stake. He needed to catch the white wolf as soon as possible, even if it meant he needed to use his strength against it. The white wolf must follow them back to Grai, by hook or by crook.

However, the other wolf was fast. So fast, in fact, that he had lost it just within seconds. A growl escaped his throat. But he wouldn’t give up, he couldn’t. Sensing that he might need some help, Yongguk howled, hoping that the others were awake and heard his message. And they did, very much to his relief.

“What happened?” it was Himchan who reached him first, followed by a groggy Daehyun and a half-asleep Youngjae; it looked like the former had dragged them straight out of bed.

“I saw it! I saw the white wolf!” the alpha announced, and that finally woke the two younger wolves completely, their eyes wide as they stared at their leader in surprise.

“Are you sure it’s the one we’re looking for?” Daehyun asked in genuine curiosity, only to receive a snarl from his alpha instead.

“I understand what the queen said now, it’s different. It isn’t like the other white wolves in Grai.”

“How is it different?” Yongguk almost snarl again when Youngjae asked the question but suppressed it.

“It just is. I can’t explain it but you’ll know once you see it yourself.”

“It doesn’t matter what it looks like, we need not waste any more time or we’ll lose it forever,” Himchan interrupted.

“You’re right. This is a golden chance,” Yongguk nodded in agreement, “Daehyun, Youngjae, you guys take the north. Himchan, you follow me to the south. It’s dangerous to go alone so we should go in pairs, just in case. If you find the white wolf, bring it straight to the cabin, understood?”

“Yes, sir!”

With that, the werewolves began their search with high hopes. Daehyun and Youngjae went up north as they were asked to. Their senses heightened so as to not miss anything that might lead them to their target. To be quite honest, they were rather doubtful about this. How could they possible find the wolf when they hadn’t even seen it before? They didn’t even know what to look for, especially now that Yongguk said it looked nothing like the white wolves back home. But then again, there weren’t really any other wolves in this forest, were there?

Himchan, on the other hand, was both relieved and confused, to say the least. He was just about to fall asleep when he heard Yongguk’s call for help. He didn’t know what to think at that moment other than his best friend might be in danger and needed his help. So, without thinking twice, he immediately went to wake the other two up and rushed towards the direction of the howl.

However, he wasn’t sure if Yongguk really did see the white wolf, or if he were just imagining things. This forest, indeed, had a lot of strange creatures lurking around after all. It was possible that something was just playing around with his mind, or Yongguk just mistaken something else for the white wolf. At this rate, anything was possible, really.

“I saw it Channie, I really did,” Yongguk said almost dejectedly, rather frustrated with their fruitless adventure, and Himchan couldn’t help but soften a bit upon hearing his nickname; it had been quite a while since his best friend called him that.

“I believe you, Gukkie,” he reassured the alpha, using his nickname, “Let’s just continue looking, okay? It wouldn’t have run that far.”

Unfortunately, the white wolf was nowhere to be found. Even after hours of searching, they couldn’t even see a tiny hint of white in the forest. The sky was getting brighter every passing second and in no time, the sun would rise. The werewolves didn’t have much choice but to retreat back to the cabin. They were tired and disappointed, but at least, they knew that they were in the right place.

“What now?” Himchan asked, looking at their alpha who was pacing back and forth restlessly.

The werewolves, transformed back into their human forms, were back in the house, having a group meeting in the living room. The sun was already up by now. Although they couldn’t find the white wolf, they were relieved to know that it really did exist. It was kind of hard to believe, but they trusted their alpha. Yongguk had never been wrong before.

The said man finally sat down, his brows furrowed as his mind replayed the scene at the stream. Now that he carefully thought about it, the wolf was indeed very different. The coat of its fur was pure white, unlike the ones he had seen back at home, which had some streaks of either brown or black. And its eyes were a lighter shade of red, almost like pink, as opposed to the bright red normal white wolves would have.

The look in its eyes when it stared at him, however, threw him off a little bit. It confused him. It wasn’t just anger that he noticed, somehow, he could see that the wolf was… lonely. And for some odd reason, it pained his heart to see that glint of sadness in its eyes, though almost unnoticeable. What could’ve happened that it ran away from Grai, its home. Deep down, he knew that the wolf was one of them, he could just feel it.

There was another thing that puzzled him – the reflection of the little girl that he saw when he was drinking. This would be the first time he saw her outside his dreams. Who was she? The timing of her appearance and the white wolf couldn’t just be a mere coincidence. He couldn’t help but think that the two incidents were related one way or the other. Maybe the girl might know something and just maybe, she could help them find the wolf.

Great, not only he needed to find the wolf, but also an unknown little girl, who may or may not even exist in real life. Because of this, he decided not to mention about it to the others yet. At least not until he was completely sure of her existence. Taking a deep breath, Yongguk looked up only to see his fellow pack, each and every one of them, staring at him with hopeful eyes.

“We’ll stay until we find the white wolf,” he said with determined voice.

“Who said you could stay?” a female voice suddenly interrupted and all eyes were now at the figure that just entered the front door.

Dal took off her favourite black cloak and hung it on the wall next to her. “I’ve got you your boat back,” she said nonchalantly, throwing a set of keys at Youngjae’s direction, “but I couldn’t say that it’s in a good shape. The bandits have pretty much wrecked everything, including your game console. I could get someone to fix the boat, though. But that would take days, or maybe even weeks. Oh and, good morning, Himchan! Did you get a good night’s sleep?”

“Oh, good morning, Dal. I didn’t get any sleep but I’m feeling alright!” the guy replied almost too cheerfully.

Now everyone’s attention has turned to Himchan, their eyes boring straight into his skull. There was a huge ‘the just happened’ expression plastered on their faces. The guy acted all innocent, as if nothing unusual just happened. The silly grin never left his face as he asked, “What?”

“Since when did you get all friendly with that scary vampire?” asked Daehyun with a frown.

“I heard that!” Dal shouted from the kitchen as she prepared something for breakfast.

Still smiling, Himchan replied, “Oh, we bonded last night.”

“No way!” Youngjae let out a dramatic gasp, “She’s your mate?!”

The poor guy only received a hard slap on the back of his head immediately after the question slipped out of his mouth, causing him to roll over in pain while the others laughed in amusement. “Did you think I’d act this normal if I’ve found my mate? I would’ve pounced on her straight away! Besides, Dal is not my type,” the older male retorted, without knowing the consequence he would face soon.

“I heard that too!” they heard the vampire yelled and out of nowhere, a spatula came flying in, missing Yongguk’s nose just slightly, and hit Himchan square in the face.

It was dead silent for a brief moment before the entire room erupted into laughter. Himchan, on the other hand, was on the verge of losing his insanity as he groaned out profanities, worried that his naturally handsome face would need a correction surgery. He could be quite a narcissistic diva if he wanted to be, a side of him that they found annoying yet charming at the same time.

There was just one person who didn’t seem to enjoy all the commotion, though. Instead, he was once again lost in his thoughts. The gears in his head started turning and it finally clicked to him that they might have not been alone in the forest last night after all. Ignoring the ruckus in front of him, Yongguk headed towards the kitchen with dozens of questions floating in his mind.

“Were you out in the forest the whole night?” was his first question, taken Dal slightly aback.

The woman turned around slightly, only to see great determination burning in the man’s eyes as he waited for her reply and all of a sudden, she felt nervous. She managed to recover herself quickly though. So she turned her attention back to the pot of beef stew she was making. “Yes,” came her short reply.

Her response, or lack thereof, irked him somehow. It also confused him how she could turn so cheerful and almost flirty just a minute ago to this quiet and cold person. Well, to her defense, he hadn’t exactly been that nice to her either. But still, why couldn’t she be friendlier with him like she was with the others?

Yongguk shook his head as he scolded himself mentally upon realising how sidetracked he was. Her behaviour towards him was the least of his concern, but he did hope that she could answer some of the questions that had been haunting him for the past couple of days. At the least, he hoped that the woman would know something or someone that would be of help to their mission.

Clearing his throat, he began to ask again, “Did you happen to see any white wolf roaming around the forest last night?”

Silence. He didn’t receive and form of response for almost five minutes. Other than the sounds of stew boiling and the distant chatter from the living room, it was completely silent. That’s how he knew that the woman knew something. She may not have uttered a single word, but the way her face contorted, or the way her hand trembled slightly at the mention of the mysterious creature, he was positive that she knew.

On the other hand, Dal was in a state of panic, although she might not seem like it. She kind of had a feeling why the werewolves were here but she told herself that she was just being paranoid. Nobody was supposed to know about the white wolf except for her and her brothers. This was all her fault. She should have reminded the wolf not to wander around now that they had some guests. The pack might seem like good people but they should still be careful. Who knew what kind of nasty tricks they had hidden up their sleeves.

A part of her was curious, though. It had been over fifteen years since the white wolf came. Kim Minseok, the eldest brother of the Kim siblings, was the one who found it all bruised and broken as it whimpered under a big oak tree not far from their house. It was only a child at that time, merely eight years of age. The Kims didn’t think twice and immediately took it in when their son brought it home. They bathed it and nursed it back to health. It wasn’t until a month or so that they found out that it wasn’t just a wolf, but a werewolf. It became a part of their family then, and nobody had even come to look for it since, not until now.

“What business do you have with the white wolf?” she found herself asking instead of denying, her curiousity has got the best of her.

Yongguk couldn’t help but smirk, “So you do know about the wolf, don’t you?”

Dal tried her best to maintain her calmness, so as to avoid disposing unnecessary information. She needed to be careful with her words and reactions. She still didn’t know for sure whether or not they were harmless. The woman turned off the stove and moved to start preparing the table. She wasn’t quite sure herself why she even bothered cooking breakfast for them. Well, albeit uninvited, they were still her guests after all.

“I wouldn’t say that I know the white wolf,” she started calmly while arranging the needed cutleries, “but I’ve heard about it a couple of times.”

“Tell me everything that you know.”

Chapter 7: You know my first theory when I read about Dal was that she "must" be the white wolf or her be being related to it, but then I was a bit confused so I said "oh she's a princess" but hey she's the wolf. Now this is getting interesting.

Chapter 6: Oh wow , Dal is a princess! Well I think Junhong and Dal will have more of a friendship bond connection with eachother while Dal and Yong Guk will have a real bond/mated connection :) that's what I think. This is a really good story btw.

Chapter 6: I'm really curious about the connection Dal & Junhong had, especially the spark they each felt &A the curiosity of knowing one another! I loved how Minseok & Yongguk were both protective yet respectful of each other's power, showing wisdom on each others behalf.,I was floored to see Junhong walk out, but even more shocked as to who the older gentleman is & the messenger who seems to know it all. Thank you for updating, look forward to more!!

Chapter 5: Ooooh, the intrigue!! She does know, that was smart of Yongguk to think about that. Hahaha, Himchan & Dalmmake me laugh, but I'm more interested to see how her convo w/Yongguk is going to go. Technically, they're on the same side, whether that's figured out or not, time will tell.... their convos are th hardest for sure. Glad Youngjae ship is back! Thanks for updating, look forward to more! And yes, LOVE LOVE LOVE Noir, there's not one song I don't love.
