Worries and Revelations
What Divides UsThe first meeting between Aron and Minhyun didn't go as JR had expected. The two of them had driven across town to the suburb of Ladue, and while staring at the incredibly nice homes, located the address Minhyun had texted JR earlier in the day. They'd been texting back and forth for the last two days, but now that it was the weekend, Aron was off of work and able to go with JR.
Aron pulled the beat up old car into the driveway of one of the most stunning houses JR had ever seen. They had to make a half circle around to the side of the house before they came to a stop beside the car JR remembered Kwangsoo driving. The two cousins looked at one another, then sat staring silently at the house for a long moment. The rest of the huge driveway made a circle around a massive green leafed tree, and though the reddish colored house was only one storey, it was long and wrapped around the majority of the driveway, with three doors on the front. One of which opened, and Minhyun waved at them from the doorway.
That was when Aron turned to JR and said, "You didn't say it was Hwang Minhyun!" Which of course left JR in confusion until his cousin explained. The Hwang family were partners to some of the biggest media and electronic giants in the world, owning shares in everything from cell phones and laptops to actual broadcast stations both in St Louis and back in Korea. It explained why JR hadn't known, given how little he cared about brand name things or staying on top of politics, but Aron's amazement wore off on him a little and he suddenly felt ashamed of the ripped jeans and plain t-shirt he'd worn.
But he couldn't go back now, and so he took a deep breath and stepped out of the car to make his way tot he ridiculously elaborate gold-colored front door. "Hey," he greeted Minhyun, who graciously invited them both in, introducing himself to Aron with a handshake and a small bow. Knowing who the Hwang's were now made Minhyun's accent make sense to JR, though he did wonder what had brought them to the American Midwest.
Following the other inside gave a whole new level of nervousness, the home a veritable mansion within the doors. JR tried not to stare and could feel Aron doing the same, but he saw Minhyun cringe a bit and knew that they were both failing miserably. The tall young man led them to the kitchen, in which most of their apartment could have fit into, and as they took seats at the large island he dug in the fridge for drinks.
"Cokes okay?" he asked, holding out a red can, and both cousins agreed readily. Once they had their refreshments, Minhyun took a seat across the island and smiled at them hesitantly. "Sorry I didn't uh... warn you, I guess," he said hesitantly, waving a hand to indicate the house.
"Don't be," JR said immediately, wanting to put him at ease. "It's not a big deal." Aron said nothing, only took a drink of his coke, but JR could see it in his eyes. Oh, it was a big deal alright.
Minhyun sighed and shook his head, but gave JR a smile nonetheless. "So I have to ask, now that we're not texting or in a place that could have survelience, what can you do?"
"Good question," JR admitted, setting his coke down on the counter to look at his own hands. "I'm strong, but not like, Superman or something. And I am fast, too. It's like everything about me has just been magnified, like I'm just..."
"Superhuman," Aron filled in when he drew a blank. Both of the other two looked at him and he shrugged. "What? What else would you call it? You're human, and you're not average, you're super. And so you're superhuman."
Minhyun let out his soft little laugh and shook his head minutely. "You wouldn't happen to be where JR got the quote from Spiderman from, would you?" At Aron's surprised nod, he laughed again and shook his head. "I should have known one of you would be a superhero fan. So who's idea was it for JR to run around with a ski mask?"
That's right. "How do you know about that? It wasn't on any of the media reports, I-" And he realized, as both Minhyun and Aron gave him flat-eyed stares, how he had known. Aron had just told him that the Hwang family owned shares in most of the local media outlets. "You bought the story off."
Minhyun shrugged, picking up his drink and motioning for them to follow. "It wasn't that difficult," he said as he wound through several hallways all lavishly decorated. "Only one helicopter caught a glimpse of you, the one that Bandit downed-"
"Bandit?" Aron snorted at the nickname in amusement, but Minhyun ignored him and continued on.
"-And that helicopter happened to belong to the station my family owns. I paid to bury the story, though if something happens, I can't promise it won't stay that way. Besides, the camera on board only saw a glimpse of you, masked up and looking like a hoodlum. It's a good thing you did wear that silly thing, I suppose."
Yeah, no kidding. The irritated look Aron sent in his direction
