At Close
Look Up at the Stars
The corridor was silent except for the squeaks of the wheels on the gurney upon which he was laying. A thin sheet had been pulled over his
face much like the way a dead person’s body was covered, no doubt to conceal his identity. The scratchy fabric lay weightlessly over his nose,
flooding his olfactory system with the scent of antiseptic laundry detergent and the sweet metallic pungency of blood.
The gash on his wrist had long been stitched together again, left only to become yet another scar amongst the many others scattered on his arm.
His whole body felt stiff and heavy, almost as if his own limbs did not belong to him. After his latest attempt, the doctors had no doubt upped
the dosage of his medication again. He mentally cursed over and over again in the prospect being thrown back into the dark hellhole he’d been
subject to for the past three years.
His hip bones and back muscles screamed in protest as he was momentarily lifted up in the air and then placed on the starched sheets of his
bed. He could hear every spring in the mattress groaning as his legs landed on the ancient piece of furniture. There was a few seconds of
silence as the footsteps around him slowed.
Kyuhyun thought the doctors were just going to leave him in his room like every single other time, but when the footsteps started coming
towards him instead of away from him, he knew the doctors had finally gotten smart.
.
All three doctors and nurses left the room ten minutes later with a victorious grin on their faces. They had bound the boy’s arms and legs to the
railings of the bed. Now, there was absolutely no way for the boy to attempt suicide anymore.
Sungmins POV
Sungmin sank into the couch in the hospital lounge, his muscles aching from the excessive running he had done. In the eight hours of his
shift, this was the first time his touched a chair.
It was flu season and more people than ever flooded into the ER with complaints of high fever and diarrhea. Most of them had to be
hospitalized to minimize contamination and in less than two hours, every single bed in the Emergency department was filled with sick patients
and surrounded by family members. By the end of the day, it had turned into a warzone and Sungmin as a resident doctor, had to run around
and deal with all of them.
It was a miracle he even managed to take a glimpse at the door at the very end before being called to deal with yet another patient. It had
restored to its former glory, locked up with a passcode and fingerprint as if nothing had happened the previous night.
He buried his face into his hands as he contemplated what he had seen and smelled in the room the last time it had been left open.
It was a smell he’d recognize anywhere. It was definitely his smell.
But if he really was still alive then why hadn’t he contacted him all these years? And why was his room locked and restricted?
Had the doctors been keeping him at the hospital because he really was sick or was there an ulterior motive?
Sungmin sighed, already feeling the onset of a headache from all the questions whirling around in his brain. Inhaling deeply, he racked his
brain for a few more minutes before deciding to set it aside in favor of much needed nap.
It was a mere ten minutes later that he awoke to his phone ringing in his pocket. Groaning, he extracted his phone from his pocket and answered.
“Dr.Lee, a 19 year old boy with a fractured hipbone, several fractured ribs and pneumothorax was just sent in. We need-
“I’ll be there.”
Too tired to speak anymore words, he stood from his seat and began walking down the hall. He yawned as he turned the corner to wait for the
elevator. It seemed like several minutes before the elevator dinged and the doors slid open. Just as he was about to step in, a body slammed
and collapsed in him.
Luckily, the person was thin, much too thin for his height and age, so the hit didn’t faze Sungmin very much.
He carefully laid the now unconsious boy down on the ground as he took a closer. The boy had a doll face, a sharp jawline and pale milky white skin stretched
tightly over it. His eyes were sunken in but Sungmin could see the brightness that was once contained in it. The doctor wondered if he was
dreaming because there was only one person with such features. As the doctor moved in closer, he caught the boy’s scent.
Cherry Blossoms
Sorry for making you guys wait so long for a tiny update. I'm not going to make any promises but I will try my best to finish this story. It shouldn't last for that much longer. The grammar hasn't been edited, so apologies in advance for that. Happy Reading!
