Episode Seven

Twenty-One :: A JYP Survival Show
Divided we...

The dorms are active despite the six AM time stamp in the corner of the video. Byunjae, Na Sanghyun, Koda, and TJ are all sitting in front of the TV playing Super Smash Bros. Koda seems to be winning judging by the manic grin on his face compared to the intense and frustrated focus the other three are giving the screen.

Jude is sitting on the couch with Hongsol, chatting with his friend as they watch the four play. Xaris can be seen at the very edge of the video, sitting at the kitchen table and talking with someone - or possibly arguing by his hand gestures, though the party he's conversing with is hidden.

The video is muted, with a faint murmur sounding instead of actual voices and the time stamps speeds through two hours as the boys continue playing.

Around seven Danny comes in, grabs cereal from the kitchen and then sits down beside to Jude to join in observing the group of Smash players. He's a much more active observer, shouting excitedly every few moments as something happens onscreen.

The video's sound cuts in when the front door opens at eight and Jihyo steps inside. At first no one notices her as the chaos, but after a moment Jude glances over.

"Hey guys, better pause it for a minute."

His voice isn't very loud, but it carries authority and the game is paused, though with some complaining.

Jihyo clears . "Is everyone here?"

"Seongjun and Ant are still asleep I think. I can go get them!" TJ bounces up from his spot on the floor and vanishes down the hall before anyone can say anything else.

Jihyo bounces impatiently on the balls of her feet as they wait for TJ to return, which he does a minute later, towing a mostly asleep Ant behind him.

"Seongjun is getting dressed he'll be out in a minute." He announces loudly as he pushes Ant onto the couch and plops back down on the floor next to Koda.

Ant curls up sleepily against one of the cushions, but his eyes remain half-open as he watches Jihyo continue to bounce.

Finally Seongjun joins them and Jihyo again clears , although all eyes have been focused on her the entire time. "So, we reviewed the footage and discussed at length who we felt won the last challenge, and it was a very difficult decision but Byunjae?"

There's a slight pause in her words and the singer starts to look excited before her next sentence has him slumping back down.

"You're still elminated. Sorry. But at least you get to participate in the rescue round!"

This catches the attention of someone offscreen. Do Sanghyun's voice can be heard coming from the kitchen area. "Wait, but I thought there were eliminations for this round as well? Don't those people get a chance in the rescue rounds?"

Jihyo hums and shrugs. "Well, no. The rescue round starts filming tomorrow but this challenge will still have twenty four hours left at that point so whoever gets elminated can't be in the last rescue round. So if you're elminated after this you're out for good."

There's a long silence as every processes the new information. Jihyo takes a long breath and then quickly speaks again before anyone can say anything.

"Also, for the people who are immune this voting round it's Danny, Xaris, and the Sanghyuns, since you guys were in the winning group for the acting challenge. But, if you come in last you're still out, whether you're immune or not. With the show almost over if you're not loved by the audience by now you don't really have a place in the group at this point." She says it bluntly and ends with a shrug. "Anyway you guys need to get to the main practice room to get your last group challenge. JYP wanted you there at eight but obiously that isn't happening. So just get there ASAP and he probably won't be too annoyed. Anyway, good luck, have fun, don't get eliminated!" And with that she was back out the door, leaving the still mostly stunned contestants in her wake.

Jude recovers quickest and begins the task of getting Ant to his feet. "Alright guys you heard the lady. Let's get to the main building."

"Sh*t I'm not dressed!" Xaris bolts up and hurries towards the hallway, closely followed by Danny who drags Ant along with him.

Danny turns to Jude just before vanishing into the hallway. "We'll catch up, you guys should get going."

Jude nods and with assistance from Hongsol herds everyone out the door, leaving Byunjae alone in the living room, staring at the paused game.

Xaris reenters the room first and looks at the singer awkwardly, clearing his throat and shuffling towards the door. Danny comes in not long after. He glances at Xaris and then walks over to Byunjae, squatting down next to him.

"Hey there's one more round, and you did really well last time. There's a good chance you'll be able to do even better in tommorrow's round, right?" His voice is soft and comforting.

Byunjae stands up absruptly, pushing him away. "I'm fine hyung, don't patronize me. We both know if I couldn't do it this time I may as well just give up on debuting now." He shoves his hands into his pockets.

Danny starts to speak but Byunjae shakes his head angrily. "If I dare to hope again - I couldn't take it hyung. I can't take failing again. So I'm done trying. Whatever happens happens." He grabs the remote from the couch, turns off the TV, and walks towards the hallway, passing a slightly more alert Ant on his way.

Danny watches him with a mixture of surprise and worry. Xaris coughs loudly after a moment.

"Hey hyung, I know your friend's got it tough at all but we have to get to the main building, remember?"

Danny sighs and stands up. "Yep. Alright crew, let's move!"

"Don't call us that."

The scene shifts to the main practice room. It's been a few minutes since the last shot since moments after the change Danny, Xaris, and Ant walk in. Na Sanghyun waves Danny over as soon as he sees his friend.

"Hey, how's Byunjae doing?"

Danny shrugs uncertainly, but the conversation is cut short when the CEO clears his throat loudly.

The camera angle changes to show that JYP is standing at the front of the room, holding the same box that had decided the partners from the previous episode. He waits a moment longer than he needs to to make sure all eyes are on him before he begins with his usual flair.

"Now you'll be wondering what the final elimination challenge will be. We'll get to that, but first I'd like to announce our three lowest-ranked contestants."

Everyone shuffles nervously at the declaration.

Jude is the one to speak up. "Sir? I thought there were no eliminations last round?"

JYP waves him off. "Oh there weren't. But if there were these three would have been, what's that American phrase? Off the island. So for this challenge they'll be trying to earn enough votes to knock someone else out in their stead. Any questions?"

"So many." Collin mumbles, but he rolls his eyes and clamps his mouth shut when JYP shoots him and exasperated look.

"Well then, let's get straight to the point. Our tenth, eleventh, and twelfth place contestants, respectively, were Do Sanghyun, Na Sanghyun, and Collin. You three will be the leaders of this challenge."

Collin grins at the news, while Do Sanghyun and Na Sanghyun look thoughtful and nervous respectively.

JYP moves on quickly. "Now for the challenge itself, this will be a full group performance. Most of you should be familiar with our JYP Nation concert?"

Everyone nods except Koda, who raises his hand and shakes his head emphetically.

"No idea sir!" He says, a bit too loudly.

JYP sighs. "It's a concert we hold twice a year with all our artists. As some of you will, within the next few weeks, debut as a JYP group I thought it fitting that you be a part of the concert. And so the performance you create for this challenge will be performed live on the JYPNation stage in two days. Now if the three leaders will draw a slip of paper and I'll finish explaining what you need to do."

No one looks happy that the explanation is being given in several slow parts, but the three do as instructed.

Collin promptly unfolds his. "After School?"

JYP ignores his confusion. "Each slip will have the name of a top KPop artist from the last generation of idols. You each will choose a song from the named artist and be in charge of teaching and arranging the song and formation to the other contestants, including the two other leaders. As I said, this is a full-group challenge."

Do Sanghyun awkwardly raises his hand. JYP nods to him and he takes in a quick breath before speaking.

"If this is a full group challenge how come we're divided into three parts? Won't it be difficult to learn three songs in... two days?" He pauses to briefly calculate how long it is until the concert.

JYP waves his hand as if shooing the question away. "I never said you had to do the entire song, that would be a bit much. You're each in charge of your own portion is all. Now then, you have your groups, get started! Oh, and it should be noted that you can't help each other with your parts. Dismissed!"

Collin is talking before JYP has even left the room. "Okay I already know which song we're doing, and I call my section being first, it'll fit best."

"You don't know that-" Na Sanghyun starts to protest but Do Sanghyun drowns him out.

"That's fine. I got Super Junior so anything I choose will probably work best as a middle or ending section, we'll want a strong start."

"DBSK has strong stuff." Na Sanghyun raises his voice to be heard, and soon he and Collin are arguing while Do Sanghyun looks helplessly between them.

Jude leans over to Hongsol, who's standing beside him. "How much trouble would I be in if I stepped in and took over?"

Hongsol looks thoughtful. "I mean nothing is going to get done any time soon from the looks of this, we all know how long Collin and Na Sanghyun's arguments can take. Maybe just say something to get everyone focused again? JYP can't get mad over that!"

Jude thinks for a moment before making his way towards the three challenge leaders. He taps Do Sanghyun on the shoulder, and the immediate look of relief that washes over the younger contestant's face makes Jude laugh.

"Guys? Hey guys, don't forget we only have two days to do this. Why don't you all choose your songs and then figure out the order?" He doesn't raise his voice, but it easily overpowers the argument nonetheless, and silence returns to the room for a moment before Na Sanghyun relucatantly shrugs.

"Yeah fine, that makes sense."

Collin doesn't wait for an invitation before announcing his song. "I'm going with Bang. It's iconic and the beat is solid. It would be a really good lead in."

Na Sanghyun opens his mouth to retort, but then thinks the better of it and just rolls his eyes. "With DBSK it would either be Mirotic or Balloons since those are easily their two most known singles."

Do Sanghyun chews on his lip for a moment before adding in his own thoughts. "Well I guess I'll probably go ahead and choose Sorry Sorry. I know it's pretty cliché but I think everyone here probably already knows most of the choreography so we could spend more time on the formations and stuff instead of learning the moves."

Na Sanghyun looks thoughtful at his words. "You know, maybe I'll go with Balloons. I think a lot of us don't have the dancing skills for Mirotic now that I'm thinking about that." He claps his hands together with finality. "Okay then, we open with Bang, go into Sorry Sorry, and end with Balloons. Collin, I guess you're going first."

Collin grins. "Naturally. Alright troops, let's do this."

The time stamp in the corner indicates about six hours have passed. All twelve remaining contestants are standing in formation, with Collin standing in the front and calling out counts as they slowly shift through several movements. After a minute Collin sighs and calls for a water break.

He grabs TJ and Na Sanghyun and pulls them aside.

"Hey, do you two want to work on this part privately for a few minutes? Everyone else is pretty much ready to keep going but you two still seem to be struggling."

TJ look embarrassed but he nods. Na Sanghyun nods as well.

"Yeah, I keep nearly elbowing Danny in the head. I'm not sure he appreciates that much."

Collin shrugs. "It's a tough choreo, the kind you need near perfect synchronizations for. After School may not have the best singers or rappers but their choreographers know what they're doing, and the ladies know how to execute what they're given. Come on we'll start from the top."

While Collin, TJ, and Na Sanghyun go to a different practice room to keep rehearsing, the other nine contestants settle themselves around the room.

Danny is sitting alone against one of the mirrors and draining what looks to be his third water bottle when Hongsol sits down next to him and offers a warm smile.

"I heard you talked to Doyeon yesterday."

Danny takes a moment to process the sentence. "Oh, TJ. Yeah, we talked."

Hongsol leans back against the mirror, still smiling. "I'm glad. You two would be good friends I've always thought. But anyway I haven't talked to you in forever, how have you been lately?"

Danny again needs a moment to follow the non sequitor, but he eventually replies. Whatever he says isn't caught, though, as the camera changes view to show Seongjun and Do Sanghyun chatting in another part of the room.

"I'm just saying we should to the cool hand-dancy part! I know, like, Doyeon or Danny-hyung couldn't handle it but they could do an easy version in the back while the dancers do the more complicated version. I mean look around, most of the people left are dancers after all!"

Do Sanghyun does look around thoughtfully at the other's observation. "I'll think about it. Collin-hyung still has about half of his agreed-on time left. But now that you point it out, a weirdly disproportional number of these guys are dancers, aren't they?"

"Right? How am I supposed to stand out as awesome if half the group are great dancers?" Seongjun complains, with little real bite in his words. "I mean, I'm not saying I wish they'd been eliminated or anything, but I wish no one had been eliminated. Also we're dangerously low on good singers, did you notice? You and Jude are the best singers left, and no offense but you aren't the best vocalist in the world. I would have put money on Soul or Doc still being here, but I guess JYP is actually going to hope that he ends up with a balanced group at the end."

Do Sanghyun remains quiet through Seongjun's musings, but he looks contemplative. A moment after Seongjun finishes talking he replies. "Well you and Ant aren't terrible, you'd just need some more training. Personally I was surprised when Noheul was eliminated, he's quite charismatic off screen. I guess he got the short straw having to work with Doc so early in the show though, those two have been at each other's throats from day one."

The camera again jumps to a different conversation.

Jude offers the lens half a glance just after it starts recording before going back to chatting with Xaris.

"I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that Collin does have a point. Survival shows are about making the audience love you, and talent unfortunately rarely factors in."

Xaris rolls his eyes. "Still it was out of line saying that Soul never had a chance challenging you. He's a great singer and one of our closest friends." He emphasizes 'our' pointedly and looks over at Jude. "Aren't you at least a little upset by Collin saying that?"

Jude is starting to look a tad uncomfortable, and he again glances at the camera before taking a breath. "I'm not thrilled but Collin is Collin. You know he means well, he can just be  bit abrasive at times, it's who he is. Not unlike Gosaeng honestly, and you get along with him just fine."

"I generally ignore Koda unless he's being stupid and then I either laugh or try to correct him." Xaris's response is immediate. "He's easy to ignore if you try. Collin seems to go out of his way to be too annoying to ignore."

"I think he just knows how to push your buttons is all." Jude is clearly getting very uncomfortable with the topic but is doing his best to disguise that. "All I can say is to keep trying to ignore him, he'll get bored eventually."

"That's terrible advice." There's no malice in Xaris's voice, just exhaustion. "Hey you think I'd be able to sneak a nap before break is over? I just realized we haven't slept in days."

Jude shrugs thankfully and Xaris leans back and closes his eyes.

The time stamp jumps forward, the screen flashing between shots of the group continuing to practice. Eventually it settles at eight PM, when the tired contestants get another break.

Do Sanghyun and Collin chat quietly together near the door along with Ant who's mosty just listening and nodding every so often. The rest of the contestants are all sitting or lying down on the floor, grabbing quick naps or draining the last of the water bottles.

Koda whines pitifully when he finishes his bottle. "Why were we only given three packs? That's not nearly enough water for two days and twelve people, when my old crew practiced we'd have a bottle per person per every three hours. That was the rule of thumb."

TJ shrugs helplessly. "What do you want to do? Sneak out and try to steal more water from the staff room or something?"

Seongjun, who'd been listening quietly up to this point, lights up with an impish grin. "Why not? We have a full twenty minute break while the 'leaders'" He makes air quotes around the title pointedly, "Talk with Ant about how to put their songs together so Yeou knows where to start for his section. Why don't we go get more water?" He sits up, growing more excited with the idea by the second. "We can be like James Bond, sneaking around and fighting the good fight!"

"The fight for more water." TJ points out, laughing a bit but clearly tired.

Koda seems gungho though. "Alright, let's do it! You and me Junnie!"

Seongjun sticks his tongue out at the nickname. "Sure thing Gogo."

"Boo, no, bad nickname. Bad friend."

TJ just laughs at them as his eyes close. "You two go have fun, tell me how it goes."

Koda pokes him with his foot. "You're not gonna come adventuring with us?"

"Nah, I'm sleepy."

Seongjun shrugs to Koda before they sneak out of the room, leaving TJ to curl up and nap.

The image switches between several empty corridors before finding Seongjun and Koda walking down a long hall, speaking to each other in tones louder than perhaps they should have been considering their self-assigned mission.

"So I'm just saying that with you and me as the dancers that would mean KimQ and Collin won't debut. Which I guess they don't sing that well and if we want Doyeon debuting with us that would be good."

Koda bristles. "We do want him to debut! So that's three, who else? Hongsol-hyung right?"

"And Jude-hyung obviously. And then obviously Yeou. So that two really good singer, three good dancer, two good rappers, but I guess Jude is a main vocal so he wouldn't do any rapping so really it would just be you-"

"Yes! More parts!"

"I guess it's pretty good for a final lineup, we could pull it off!" Seongjun nods happily. "I can't imagine debuting with anyone else anyway. Maybe Xaris-hyung but everyone says it's going to be a six-member group."

"Where did you hear that anyway I never heard that a number was actually chosen." Koda tilts his head as they turn the corner. The camera angle switches to show them coming up a new hallway.

"Hongsol-hyung, where else? He always knows stuff ahead of time becaue the staff love him." Seongjun laughs. "Okay here it is." He tries to open the door, but it's locked and he frowns. "We didn't think this all the way through did we?"

"We can figure this out! We won't be bested by a door!" Koda proclaims and rattles the handle more.

Seongjun just laughs and leans back against the wall while Koda continues struggling with the lock.

"Do you have a hair thingy? Those little things that girls put in their hair for some reason?"

"It's to keep their hair out of their face, and no, I do not have any bobby-pins hyung." Seongjun laughs.

However before Koda can reply the door swings open and nearly hits the dancer in the face.

The two boys stare wide-eyed at the MC as he steps into the hall holding a mug full of a dark liquid and eyes them with mild annoyance.

"What are you two doing, exactly?" He sounds as tired as the contestants look.

Seongjun clears his throat awkwardly. "Well you see we ran out of water bottles and everyone is very thirsty so we though-"

"That you'd break into the staff room and steal ours?" The MC lightly rubs at his temple with his free hand, and then waves for them to go ahead into the room. "The full packs are in the closet at the back, try to leave us a few. Oh and there's leftover chicken from the staff meeting this morning so I guess you can take that as well."

Both boys look overjoyed as they bound past the MC, with Seongjun calling "Thanks so much sir, you're the best!" as he passes.

The MC just gives another long-suffereing sigh and heads down the hallway.

Back in the room, a few minutes later, the rest of the contestants are waking up from their naps as Do Sanghyun fusses with the sound system. He scans the room quickly, and then frowns somewhat nervously.

"Um guys? Where did Seongjun and Koda go?"

Jude, who had been taking his time stretching and getting up, is immediately on alert. "That's never a good combination." He mumbles to himself, though the camera hanging over his head catches it. Louder he adds, "TJ, any ideas?"

TJ is still lying on the floor in an attempt to claim a few more seconds of sleep, but he finally gives in to the waking world and sits up slowly, rubbing at his eyes blearily. "Sure, they went to get water during the break. They should be back soon."

And with oddly perfect timing the door swings open to reveal the two missing contestants. Seongjun is struggling under the weight of five cases of water while Koda is balancing three plates of chicken. The smell hits everyone at the same time and suddenly everyone is awake and on their feet, asking the two how they'd gotten the foor and helping take some of the weight off of them.

TJ laughs and sits next to Koda as they gather on the floor for their impromptu meal. "Don't tell me you actually broke into the staff room?" He jokes.

Koda shakes his head happily. "The interviewer guy let us in, and even told us about the chicken! He's really nice when he's not being mean."

TJ only hums in response as he tears into his food, along with every other contestant.

Do Sanghyun takes a moment longer to join the feast, worriedly looking up at the clock. Then he sighs, shrugs, and joins in.

The time stamp shows that there are ten hours until the performance starts. The contestants seem more alert as they work, scattered around the large practice room.

Collin is again working with TJ and Na Sanghyun on his section of the dance, and the two seem to be much more synchronized than in the early shot of the dance. Do Sanghyun is with KimQ, Seongjun, and Koda running a portion of Sorry Sorry. The rest of the contestants all seem to be working on different sections of the performance, except for Ant who isn't in the room at all.

The scene changes to show the quiet producer sitting alone in a sound room, tapping away at a computer. The room is dark except for the light from the screen illuminating Ant's face.

After a moment the lights suddenly flip on and Ant startles, squinting against the sudden glare and trying to see who was interrupting him.

Kangjoo looks slightly embarrassed standing by the door, hand still posed from hitting the lights. He waves awkwardly to Ant, who relaxes when he sees the other trainee.

"Oh hi. I'm almost done."

Kangjoo shrugs, closes the door, and sits in one of the other chairs to wait. "I can go somewhere else if you want, I didn't realize anyone was in here. Why do you always work with the lights off?" The question is apparently rhetorical as Kangjoo doesn't seem to mind the lack of an answer. "I guess your challenge is almost finished by now. We just started ours it feels like. Though ten hours isn't quite at the start. We only have fourteen left. One day to make a presentation and only one group can win. We just recorded some back track for our performance." Kangjoo seems content to keep rambling but Ant chooses that moment to interrupt.

"I'm finished."

Kangjoo startles, and then nods. "Okay yeah, sounds good. Um, it was good to talk to you?"

Ant shrugs and exits, leaving Kangjoo looking awkward and a bit downhearted in the room.

The young composer returns to the main practice room, and is at first ignored as the others are still practicing parts of the song.

Jude notices him first and waves him over before nudging Collin, who he was dancing with prior to Ant's arrival. Collin pauses in his dancing to glance over and quickly heads over to Ant the moment he sees the other in the room.

"Hey you finish cutting everything together?"

Ant nods his affirmative and Collin happily grabs the USB Ant holds out and hurries to the sound system, waving to get everyone's attention as he goes.

"Alright let's run this thing from the top, yeah? If we get it in one go we can go back to the dorms and get some proper food and sleep!"

Some of the contestants give sleepy cheers to this and the group get into formation as Collin starts the music.

However within ten seconds Danny stumbles and knocks into Seongjun who then misses his cue to cross the group, leaving everyone confused.

Collin sighs, a bit dramatically. "Or we'll stay here for the next nine hours and trip over our own feet. Also an option."

The scene fast forwards through the next five hours, slowing every so often to show a specific incident. At four AM TJ accidentally elbows Ant in the face, causing the entire practice to grind to a halt and the cameras to start recording at regular speed again.

"Sorry! Sorry sorry sorry!" TJ seems genuinely worried and upset as he fusses around Ant.

The composer seems unalarmed as he uses his sleeve to attempt and stem the steady stream of blood now soaking into his shirt.

Hongsol is panicking. "Oh my gosh what do we do? Are you okay? Is there a medical kit somewhere? What do we do?" He's a mess of nervous energy as he flits around Ant asking the same questions over and over again.

Collin also looks extremely worried as he watches the incident unfolding from a few feet away, though he makes no move to help.

KimQ is the one who ultimately calms everyone down by pulling a medical kit out of his bag and gently helping to patch up Ant's nose while the others hover awkwardly around him. He smiles warmly as he gives his prognosis.

"It does seem to be broken, but it snapped into place easily so it was a clean break. I'd say you'll be back in perfect shape within two weeks."

Do Sanghyun frowns. "If his nose is broken now, will he still be able to rap his section for the performance?"

For the first time since the accident Ant reacts. "I can." He sounds insistent, but he winces as he speaks and his voice comes out sounding stuffed up.

Collin shakes his head. "No way, not with your nose like that. If you tried rapping it would only make it worse. Alright, Jude? You can rap, can you take his parts?"

Xaris looks annoyed. "Why don't I take them? I'm a better rapper and my current part is pretty short."

Collin rolls his eyes. "Okay rephrasing that. Jude you're the only person who can not only rap but also probably relearn the entire dance in the next four hours."

Xaris opens his mouth, and then sighs. "Okay point."

"But if he does Ant's part who will sing the opening for Sorry Sorry?" Do Sanghyun objects quickly. Collin thinks for a moment, and then shrugs.

"You? I don't think you and Jude were ever that far apart anyway, so then Ant can take your part, you didn't have any lines right?"

Do Sanghyun contemplates his words and then hesitantly nods. "That... could work, yeah. Okay, everyone else go shower or something you smell terrible. We'll try to get you guys aquainted with your new parts."

Na Sanghyun raises his hand. "Since we didn't have enought time to finish mine I think we can probably leave them to do what they were already doing with that, just so not everything gets confused."

The other two leaders agree and the majority of the contestants head out after deciding to meet back in the practice room by six AM.

The time stamp speeds forward and several clips are shown of the group in the practice room working to perfect their new choreography interspersed with shots of the other contestants at the dorms, eating and napping. TJ and Koda look to be arguing at one point, but Soengjun's laughing at them and their return laughter reveals it to be something different.

Jude and Do Sanghyun both pick up their new dance rather quickly, but Ant struggles to remember and seems to be growng frustrated as six AM rolls around.

As the other contestants return, Do Sanghyun grabs Hongsol and pulls him aside.

"Hey hyung, do you think you can keep an eye on Ant during the performance later? He still moves at the wrong time, and you're pretty close to him for a lot of the performance, so could you just pull him back or something if he does the wrong move?" His eyes are wide and pleading, but it's unneeded as Hongsol doesn't hestitate in the slightest with his reply.

"Of course! I'll keep and eye out for him, and I'll ask Danny too, he's usually nearby in the formations."

Do Sanghyun nods in relief as Collin calls for them to get into position so they can practice with the new formation.

The music starts, and then the screen briefly goes dark and silent.

When it lights up again the contestants are all crowded into a makeup room. The microphones are picking up nothing but chaos as coordinators and stylists shout orders and requests to the contestants who try to comply as quickly as possible in the cramped space.

Ant has carefully placed himself at the edge of the chaos as a makeup artist gently places the finishing touches around his nose.

"There, you can't see the bruising at all sweetie. Now why don't you come with me and you can watch from the sound area until it's time for you to perform. We don't want anything messing up that makeup, or worse your nose!"

Ant smiles awkwardly as she leads him from the room. Jude looks up and smiles at the younger contestant as he passes, but Ant doesn't notice as he keeps his head carefully tilted down to prevent any more unwanted incidents.

Hongsol is standing next to his friend, bent down awkwardly so one of the stylists can mess with his hair. He attempts to look up at Jude without the stylist getting upset, but she quickly gives him a light flick ont he forehead and he looks down again.

Jude notices the interaction and speaks first. "You nervous?"

Hongsol hums, trying not to move. "Of course. Performing at JYPNation has always been one of those things that means you made it, you know? You're part of the family now." He frowns at the floor. "But that's not really the case this time is it? Half of us are still being eliminated, plus three of the eliminated contestants are, as we speak, performing to get another chance to debut. It feels like a mean prank. Giving all of us this chance and then yanking it away."

Jude rubs his back lightly. "Try to just enjoy it Hong. It's once in a lifetime, and you've earned the right to be up on that stage."

Hongsol smiles a bit. "Yeah, you're probably right."

The lights in the room suddenly flicker, and Do Sanghyun startles a bit.

"What does that mean?"

The stylist sighs and gives up on Hongsol's hair, patting his shoulder lightly before she files out along with the rest of the staff.

As Hongsol stands up and braces himself against the wall, Jude replies. "That's the ten minute signal. We're the opening act guys, so let's go get our mics, and then let's go give those fans the best performance of their lives!"

The contestants cheer and file out past Jude, until only he and Hongsol are in the room.

Hongsol seems to have gotten his balance back as he stands straight and moves towards the door. "That was cheesy even for you hyung."

Jude shrugs. "Meant every word though. Ready?"

"I've been ready for six years now."

The camera cuts out to the audience, who are giggling and whispering to each other excitedly. Then the music blasts on and everyone starts screaming in excitement.

The contestants continue to wave to the fans for as long as they can before the next act is announced and they're forced to head backstage to get out of costume.

Koda is practically vibrating in excitement. "Did you see those posters? My fans were right up at the front! Naturally of course, my fans are the best."

TJ rolls his eyes at Seongjun over Koda's shoulder and both both laugh a bit while Koda continues rambling on about how great his fans are, and how great he is as well.

JYP greets the group in their change room, and everyone scrambles to bow, causing Ant to let out an uncomfortable whine when his nose is bumped by a stray arm.

JYP is smiling brightly, and Jude, KimQ, and Hongsol all start to look a bit wary, while the others are still too high from the successful performance to notice the CEO's strange expression.

"That was extremely well done, all of you! Leaders you did a great job putting together your performances."

The three beamed.

"It's too bad that at least six of you will not be debuting next month, you really are a wonderful team."

And just like that all the joy was out of the room as each contestant was reminded of the impending eliminations.

"However, those votes won't be tallied until after the rescue round is aired next week, so you all have ten days to relax and enjoy your successes. Congratulations again!"

The CEO leaves with a bright grin, leaving the contestants looking distincly terrified of what is to come.

( AUTHOR'S NOTE ) Haha JYP is kind of a jerk. But it's a reminder for you guys too: it's time to vote! Since the next episode has nothing to do with these guys and is instead the final rescue round, votes for these eliminations will close on Thursday, October 13, at 11:59 CST. That's right, almost two full weeks to vote! Of course there will still be an episode next weekend, but those votes will be poll-style so the two episode's voting shouldn't clash ^^

For parts in the performance, the only set ones are for the two rappers at the start (Xaris for the first one and Jude for the second who says 'Super Seventeen Mian Mian' later on) and Do Sanghyun for the guy who does the adlibs at the start of Sorry Sorry. You can go ahead and make your own headcannons about the others ^^

And some shameless self promotion: Vs. is still open and will have the same weekly updating schedule as this story! So if you're enjoying Twenty-One maybe stop on over there and give it a look! And there's no comment-voting in that show so you won't have to worry about that ;)
Like this story? Give it an Upvote!
Thank you!

Chapter 53: Oh boy here we go again. Everyone strap on your safety belts: feelings are coming.

Oooh Byunjae. Of course he's calculating his way into an easy, we knew he'd do that. And I suppose we'll see more of him in the next bts too. You know how I feel about him and it's not altogether positive, but I suppose that in and of itself is a win for you. As long as I feel something you did your job well, and I certainly feel something for this pipsquick. "There is one person who has escaped rightful elimination." I knew this was coming but also off Byungjae DO NOT TOUCH MY DOYEON. Thankfully I also know how this happens.

SPEAK OF THE ANGEL. Oh honey. "This is fine" is the thing we tell ourselves when we desperately need that to be true.

"It almost worries him how familiar the feeling of drowning has become just in the past week."

.

"Nineteen years of coasting and then this show hits and suddenly it's a constant barrage of everything he's ignored his entire life."

NOPE.

"Maybe the world is telling him something."

TOO REAL. NOPE. NOPE. LET'S NOT.

Oh man Doyeon. You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself son. Take care of yourself before you take care of others. Don't use the reliance of others to avoid your problems PLEASE I'M DYING HERE. . Dani I do not appreciate being on the other end of this stick goddamnit. I much prefer writing the timebombs not reading them ;A; This is SO STRESSFUL.

"maybe this was karma, coming back to put him in the eliminated group where he was supposed to be."

Doyeon I will reach through this ing screen and give you the overwhelming amount of hugs that you need and deserve SO HELP ME.

Chapter 52: Omg that picture of jyp as I scrolled down xD Poor guy what did he do to you Dani??

Wow not pulling your punches going into this huh? I feel for Kangjoo and his defeated attitude. Honey! "Almost, but not quite. Because he's Choi Kangjoo and nothing scares him, especially not moody teenagers. " Honey you should be very afraid there's nothing more terrifying than teenagers! Oh man Byunjae, so much pettiness. Jude continues to intrigue me. So much depth packed in such a pleasant little exterior. Hmmm.

Aaah honestly this section warms my heart. The friend group has always been the most wholesome part of the competition, even with the troubles Doyeon faced. Even with the time bomb that's Doyeon they're still somewhat of an oasis of uncomplicated calm. "Seongjun honestly loves the idiots he calls friends. He says as much to Doyeon when they're piling back into the van to head to the second shooting location and gets a grin and a hug from both Doyeon and Hongsol, who overheard the comment. Gosaeng gags at them, and Doyeon retaliates by attacking him with a hug as well." I'm not crying you're crying! It's so sweet and we needed that after the defeated acceptance with a fringe of salt from Kangjoo. As much as I love all the drama, there is nothing quite like a break with friendship and happiness.

Aaah and then there's the edge of drama. Seongjun the one who switched. And of course you can say whatever dumb you want in this group, Doyeon, Sanghyun, and god forbid GOSAENG are all idiots honestly. Whatever dumb thing you'd say Seongjun, I can guarantee you Gosaeng has said dumber things <3 Aaah. Fair weather friends huh? There's so much history packed in those few paragraphs. "They're fun, and they're kind, and they make Seongjun feel safe and happy. He can't ask for more than that." I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING. So wholesome ;A;

Chapter 51: Holy this is the best gift I just finished a messy birth of a literature review chapter and I can use this treat. LET'S DO THIS.

So of course my son can be counted on to be dumb and break tension <3 Oh an I forgot how much I love Gosaeng and his stupidity. Come here one of my shameless favourite sons! And Ash. He never really caught my eye during the broadcast but of course a POV would change that. Man the power of POVs. LOOK AT THIS FRIENDSHIP FORMING MY HEART. But alas, elimination ever loom. Uuuugh bittersweet.

Ah. Of course. Jihwan. Aaaah yep that hurt knowing the inplication. When one is joint to the hip, separation does not come gentle. It explains why G was so unhappy for the beginning of the show, but he always did grow on me when he came back with a new outlook. G was one of the biggest comebacks for me honestly. He's fascinating.

Doyeon. Oh Doyeon. I've been dreading this. But also not because we all know how I love having my heart ripped out and crushed to dust, it's my favourite thing! Okay. So. I couldn't even really livecommen for that, I was too busy gripping my heart and reading. That whole section was masterfully written Dani. You really nailed his spiral and his confusion and his denial- . That was good. That was art. That was amazing. It hurts but in a good way.

"She didn't think they'd actually try to argue with her" oh honey. Oh babe. They're heads. "Once the dance is complete she reveals their costumes for the performance and all hell breaks loose all over again." PFFT of course. I feel bad for her she shouldn't have to deal with these s but alas she chose them.

Chapter 50: This isn't a SoC but I'm gonna toss my thoughts at you anyway!

I've always found Doc an interesting character. The way he was forced to do this even though he didn't want to because of his family connections is a very interesting way to go about nepotism. Thus this little look into his history is so fascinating, the way does and doesn't accept what's given to him at the same time. And of course the salty duo of him and Jihyun was always a pleasure!

Next up is the man itself. I love this contrast between bossy control freak Jihyun and most passive man alive Ant, and Jihyun's subsequent confusion that anyone would not /want/ something.

Ah. Of course JYP had seen, just as we did, that Jude is really the only viable candidate for a leader. I'm not surprised by this obvious favouritism (I do write Do or Die after all) and manipulation, and it's not what I see as the biggest revelation for me in this snipped. No, what I found even more interesting was the little look into his friendship with Hongsol (though, let's be real, I'm not exactly an unbiased party there). Just the fact that Jude decides to manage Hongsol instead of being straight with him speaks volumes about their friendship, and not something I'd gathered from the actual show. It speaks of something of an inequality there. An unbalance. And then even that could be dismissed as wanted what's best for your friend, even if that's not a way of going about it that I would personally find acceptable, if it weren't what followed: the almost calculated decision to not have time for Hong's insecurities right now but, as he puts it, handle them later. There's this emphasis on handling, he's handling his friend. One shouldn't be handling their friends. I doubt he has any malicious intent at all, but this does suggest this inequality. If it's an inequality in positions and/or an inequality in how much the friendship means to each of them remains to be seen but I'll be keeping my eye on them.

Chapter 47: Holy crap, these BTS chappies are such nostalgia trips ahhhhh~

I'll be catching up on \/s first before I get drawn into rereading all of this just to prepare for BTS, but holy crap, the fact that we are literally taking quotes of the chapters and unpacking them for cool tidbits is such a squee-worthy concept!!!!! (It's so good to see these boys again too!)

Chapter 44: I ACTUALLY HAVE SOME TIME TODAY SO IMMA STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS THIS LIKE I DID THE FIRST EP okay let’s go

The beginning screen flashes always remind me of the Marvel opening for some reason haha, but then I mentally pictured the “Two Days Later” as one of those spongebob transition screens???

You can’t just pair people up and put them into separate rooms full of tension, Dani~ You make it too easy to ship things!!

Aaaaaaaand by ship I don’t mean OTP but rather the package of my heart labelled “Fragile: Handle with Care” then punted off a cliff into the cold seas of “nooo my children don’t be sad!!”

Chapter 44: Oh man that was- I think a crazy ride is definitely the good descriptor here. I can't believe it's over either. 21 has been such a staple in my week, waiting around for the weekend for chapters while the rest of the week was taken up by various forms of adulting or despairing over no wifi. I'll miss it, even though I know that it's going to get replaced with Vs real soon. It's still not exactly the same you know? I love all these s so much now. They're MY heads and I love them. Well, okay, OUR heads.

Oh man for a moment I was scared Jude was going to get eliminated, in which case everything would have definitely fallen apart I mean who else is going to lead this merry band of misfits? Especially since Kyu isn't there either, oh no that hurt me. That one hurt me real bad. He was the big one besides TJ/Koda/Jude that I really wanted to see debut, also knowing his backstory and how much he deserved it. He came so far only to just not achieve his goal. I'm sad for the Sanghyun's too, but I didn't have near the attachment to them that I have for Kyu. Kim Kyuhyun please join Doyeon and Gosaeng in the you-deserve-so-much-more pile. Seongjun and Hongsol are the only ones of the friend group who made it and damned if that doesn't sting.

Chapter 44: That was very, very familiar to that of a real survival show. You captured emotions really well, so thank you for that. Both of my favorites, the Sanghyuns, sadly didn't make it to debut, but they made it very far, and I'm proud of the both of them. Using MADTOWN for their debut is really nice! Underrated groups need much more love than they're given. I was a bit worried when the final members were chosen, not because of talent but because of everything that took place during the show. However, towards the end, those worries calmed down A LOT. I found myself wishing these were real people and a real group I could support. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of No Mercy (that being my favorite survival show, honestly). I loved the JYP feel you gave to it, and I love the personalities of the MC and the interviewer. I also love the group's name being Gold in the end. Overall, I obviously very much enjoyed this as I finished it in mere hours. And now, I'm even more excited for Vs to begin. I'm sure the females will be just as interesting, if not more, than the males of the this story. Expect to see me commenting frequently over there even if my girls meet their downfall. :) - Jelly

Chapter 42: Allllll the way back to Simon Says

girl

This was cruelty in the most beautiful way like… man. I never get used to these eliminations, and even though I know who makes it to episode 9, it’s still rough seeing some of the kids go. (That little bit of foreshadowing with Na Sanghyun looking particularly worried though… I didn’t catch that until the reread, but dang…)

I feel like Soul is just kind of cursed, haha. Not his own fault, per se, but everything bad that’s happened to him so far seems mostly due to circumstance rather than his own qualities. Like Xaris said, this kid is a solid that any group would be lucky to have, but first there’s the fighting team and then there’s going up against St. Jude… kid can’t catch a break, even though he (and Sam Kim) sing like daaaaang boy why are you not everywhere.

These repeat match-ups are hurting me inside, man. I know when I first read that G and Xaris were going against each other I immediately was like oh god oh no please let this happen only once, but hello episode 9. I honestly love both of them so much. G is fantastically mature, and Xaris has shown so much growth. Since I can’t tell a good rap from a saran wrap, I’ll have to base my choice on personality… which is impossible, Dani, waiiii u do this?! Do I want the one who is already frighteningly mature or the one who is slowly maturing? Do I want the one who takes everything in stride and never stopped powering forward or the one who never backs down without a fair amount of fight and learned to keep powering forward after briefly stopping? DO I WANT WELL-DEVELOPED CHILD OR CHILD DEVELOPING WELL? CAN’T I JUST BUILD MY SHRINES IN PEACE?!

oh, also… *moves Xaris’ and Soul’s shrine closer together* At least you will be together in this way, regardless of what happens…
