-FALL-

College sophomore Kang Gary was just making sure that he had his dorm key on him before he left to meet his friends in their favorite campus coffee shop when he heard what could really only be describe as a woman getting murdered in the dorm next to his.

It was move in day so the door to the next dorm was wide open and he ran in without thinking. Inside was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen (“Oh my god what kind of sick joke is the world playing on me,” he thought) but there was no one else in the room so he stopped and asked, “What happened?”

She looked beyond relieved to see him and he couldn’t help but feel a little pleased with himself when she grabbed his arm, though it was only to put him in between herself and the window ledge, “There’s a spider!”

He went closer to inspect and took off his show to smash it with. She apparently couldn’t even stand to watch that much as she went and paced in the hall way, trying to get rid of the nerves.

“Got it,” he told her a second later.

“Thank you so much,” she sighed in relief, hand over her heart, “What’s your name?”

“Kang Gary,” he bowed his head a bit politely.

“I’m Ji Hyo. Song Ji Hyo.”

“Well if you see any more bugs, I live in the next room, don’t be afraid to come get me,” he smiled. He left her room figuring that this would be a fun story to tell his friends.

“Ji Hyo why are you panting so much?” her friend Kwang Soo asked as she sat down next to him in the lecture hall for their psychology class.

“Because, I met the guy that has a dorm room next to mine, Gary, in the stairway and somehow we ended up racing all the way here,” She plopped her head down on the desk clearly exhausted.

Kwang Soo looked like he wanted her to be joking, “This is the eighth floor.”

“Yeah, I noticed,” She snapped, “It got really hard around the fifth floor.”

Gary and Ji Hyo walked together through the science building on their way to the library. By some of luck she asked him to tutor her for their philosophy class so they were cutting through the main outdoor courtyard when Ji Hyo suddenly stopped in her tracks and grabbed his arm, “Is that a bouncy castle?”

“Hm? Yeah, it’s probably like a sorority fundraiser or something,” Before he could say anything else she had him by the wrist and was practically dragging him over to the bouncy castle, “Is this just because you hate philosophy?”

“Ugh, look it’s a bouncy castle, you don’t get this kind of opportunity every day!” Gary always thought that Ji Hyo seemed a bit guarded when she talked to him, or even when he saw her interacting with other people, but the excitement of a bouncy castle seemed to melt that all away and he got to see her genuinely happy. He couldn’t bring himself to think of philosophy either, so he decided to just have fun with her while they could.

Gary was running through the pouring rain to meet up with a few of his friends for a study group when he noticed the girl looking worried under a tiny awning had to be Ji Hyo, so he changed his course quickly, “Mong Ji Hyo! Why are you hiding out here?”

She moved over a bit so he could stand next to her under the awning and she explained, “My final paper is in this backpack and there is no way I’m using the last of my free printing credits to reprint this thing. I’m just going to wait it out.”

“Oh really, I’ll wait with you.”

“Weren’t you going somewhere?”

He feigned offense, “Are you trying to push me back out into the rain?”

“Not if you don’t want to but-“

“Good,” He smiled down at her in his easy, peaceful way and she couldn’t help but smile back. Suddenly he looked out into the distance and asked, “Do you think they’d deliver pizza here?”

“Hyung, maybe we shouldn’t sit next to Ji Hyo today,” Haha giggled mischievously, looking toward the table in the cafeteria where they sat with her for lunch every Thursday since none of them had classes then. Ji Hyo was sitting next to a boy he didn’t recognize, but they were laughing and they seemed close, and the boy had obnoxiously good hair.

“What are you talking about? We always do.” Gary said, hiding any emotion from his face, determined to put a stop to whatever was going on there.

“Ah, hyung,” Haha whined, “What if they’re flirting?”

Gary just glared at him and led the way to the table, he sat himself directly across from her, and felt a little bit victorious when she stopped mid-sentence to greet them, “Dong Wook, this is Gary and Haha. They live in the room next to mine.”

Dong Wook nodded as though he recognized their names, and Gary’s mind went about 100 miles an hour at that. He knew about them and he had never heard about him. Did that mean Gary and the rest of them were more important to her, or that she shared things with Dong Wook more then with them?

“Oh, you guys are the ones she spending all her time with lately then?” Dong Wook laughed good-naturedly.

Haha nodded, “We can’t get rid of her, I didn’t know she had other friends,”

Ji Hyo laughed, offended, “Does that make sense? You thought I didn’t have any friends before you guys? We just met at the start of the semester!”

The three of them seemed to get along well throughout the meal, but Gary stayed silent for the most part. It was weird seeing her so obviously close to another guy, and he couldn’t seem to shake the instinct to just not like this guy. Ji Hyo checks her phone for the time when she’s finished eating and stands up abruptly, “Oppa, we have to go or we’ll be late for philosophy!”

“Oh, really,” Gary was relieved, but he prided himself on his ability to keep a straight face. Hopefully now wasn’t the time that decided to fail on him.

They walked to class together and once they were a good distance away from the cafeteria she turned to look at him, “Oppa, are you feeling okay?”

“Hm, why?”

“I don’t know. You seemed quiet at lunch.” She shrugged, “Are you upset about something?”

“No.”

She pouted a bit, seeming genuinely frustrated, “Well I mean, you don’t have to tell me anything. But you still shouldn’t lie. Let me know if you change your mind.”

They didn’t talk the rest of the way to class, but by the time class was over they were back to normal. He went to his dorm room when she left for her next class, where Haha was sitting working on an essay.

“Hey, Haha, did I seem upset at lunch to you?”

“No you seemed fine. Why, were you?”

                “No.”

“Okay…” Haha gave him a look and returned to his essay.

How was Ji Hyo the only one that could tell when he was lying? Even his mom wasn’t able to tell. He heaved a big sigh and fell backwards onto his bed.
