“Moonbyul?” Yongsun asked. Her hand was stirring her shake with her straw while the other hand is propping her chin, “I haven’t heard that name before. So strange.”

“Byul just got here in Seoul, five years ago.” Wendy wiped her tears with a napkin, “Byul was so sweet. So cheesy. We we’re together for almost three years, unnie!”

“Were you fighting before he broke up with you?” Hwasa asked, she swallowed her food and continued cutting the meat on her plate.

“No!” Wendy shook her head, she was pouting again. “A few days ago, we were talking about our third anniversary. We were so happy. Then suddenly h-he broke up with me. It happened a few hours ago…”

Yongsun blinked, “Maybe…”

The two younger girls looked at her.

“Maybe there’s…someone else?” Yongsun asked.

“Ei,” Hwasa mumbled and kicked her shin under the table.

Wendy went silent all of a sudden.

“H-Hey, Seungwan-ah.” Yongsun patted Wendy’s hand on the table, “It’s just a guess. You know him better than us so…”

“Y-Yeah, I think so.”

“So what do you think?”

“S…He’s not the type who cheats.” Wendy groaned, “I don’t know. He’s such a mystery.”

“Why did he move here in Seoul anyway?” Hwasa asked, she took a sip from her tea, “Where did he came from?”

“Bucheon.” Wendy replied, “…He told me he moved here so he can open h-his own café and not go against his parent’s shop back home.”

“He has guts,” Yongsun smirked in amusement, “Competition in Seoul is worst.”

“Yeah, but he was able to get it straight. Had a few bumps for seven months before she finally got steady income…I meant he.”

Yongsun raised her eyebrows, “So he’s an independent man now?”

“Y-Yeah, even opened his own small school. It’s for kids. He teaches them how to bake.”

Yongsun furrowed her eyebrows, “Why did I not know of this?”

“Why, you want to learn how to bake? Don’t you think it’s too late for that unnie?” Hwasa teased.

Yongsun only rolled her eyes. “How old is he anyway?”

“Just a year younger than you.”

“Oh.” Yongsun blinked, “That’s a young business man.”

“Byul loves baking.” Wendy sighed, “He was so cute when he was teaching his niece how to properly make a dough.”

Yongsun ang Hwasa only exchanged glances. Silently sympathizing with Wendy.

“Moonbyul…” Yongsun mumbled, she locked her office door and continued walking down the path where the stairs are.

“So you’re the reason why my cousin’s been so happy these past few days, hm?” she continued mumbling to herself.

She was walking down the street, wanting to get the stress off since it’s an hour before six pm anyway. There’s so much time left at the moment.

Then her eyes caught sight of a café.

                                                                          Swirl and Twirl

“Swirl…And Twirl?” Yongsun mumbled, “What a weird name.”

Her eyes caught sight of the many patrons inside the café. “They’re quite packed.”

“I know right?” A woman says beside her.

Yongsun turned and caught sight of a woman whose hair is blonde, matching her white complexion. She was wearing a white blouse and black leggings paired with a pair of black Nikes. Over the clothing was an oversized brown coat.

The woman looked at her and smiled. And oh, Yongsun can feel her heart thumping loudly at the gaze.

“I found a table in there, though, mind if we share?” the woman kept on smiling.

Her eyes are twinkling though, what a sight.

“U-Uh…”

“Hurry!” The woman says, taking hold of her hand before scurrying inside with her, “We might lose some good food if you keep on hesitating like that.”

Yongsun was flustered when she felt the warm hold. Her thoughts are:

  1. What is she doing?
  2. She’s so pretty.
  3. Why the heck am I here with a mysterious blonde chick?!

“I’ll go save the table. You go order your food!” the woman grinned and immediately went to wherever the table was.

Yongsun was left standing dumfounded in front of the cashier.

The woman behind the cash register only offered her an amuse smile before she opened , “Welcome to Swirl and Twirl where we’ll make sure your tummy and money won’t go to waste. What would you like to have?”

“U-uh…” Yongsun scratched the back of her neck, still wondering why the heck is she inside the café, “I-I’ll have your…C-Cute caramel cats.” She blinked in confusion.

The woman smiled again, “They are small cakes with caramel filling. What would you like to drink? Sweet blue tornado?”

Yongsun’s eyes travelled to look for the said drink. She finally found where the drinks are and immediately thought that Vanilla yogurt looks great, “And one vanilla yogurt.”

“Alright, please wait for your food.” The woman cheekily smiled.

“…” Yongsun only kept quiet and stood aside after paying for her order. She took out her phone and scrolled through the contents. Then a thought suddenly strike her, “What if there’s no table at all?!” she quietly gasped.

The woman behind the counter heard her, “Do you have any problem, miss?”

Yongsun looked up, saw the cashier looking at her. She then figured out that the woman is not attending to anyone at the moment. “I-I just…The person I went with, I don’t really know her so…I’m afraid that your customers aren’t leaving anytime soon. And I am hungry, a-and I don’t even know if you charge people if they’re going to take out their food-…o-of course you do! And…”

“We do charge them,” the woman tilted her head, still with a small smile on her face. “If the stranger did leave you here alone with no table, I can open the floor upstairs for you so you won’t have to pay more than you intended to and you can feed your stomach immediately.”

Yongsun was taken aback by the offer, “N-No, I meant…”

Before Yongsun could even finish what she was about to say, the woman already grabbed a key and pushed a tray towards Yongsun, “Here’s your order. Come back here if you don’t find the stranger.”

Yongsun only blinked and took the tray with her. She was walking around for a few minutes before she found the woman who was also straining her neck around, trying to look for her.

“E-Excuse me,” Yongsun says. The blonde finally stopped her stressful search and grinned up at her.

“There you are!” The blonde hopped off the stool and grabbed her purse, “I was worried you got lost for a second or something. Anyway, I’m off to buy myself food. See ya in a bit!” she hurried to the counter.

Yongsun placed her tray on the table and hopped on the stool across where the woman was seated a few seconds ago.

She opened the lid and smiled at the smell of the drink she ordered.

“Cute Caramel Cats, huh?” she expected the treat and grinned at the sight of the cute cat faces that are joined by the cheeks.

She bit half of the sweet cake and held her breath when it tasted so delicious.

“…” she the caramel on her lips and slowly devoured the first piece of cake.

“It’s yummy isn’t it?” Yongsun’s eyes went up to the blonde and nodded.

“Yes, didn’t expect it from them. Such a strange name too.”

The blonde raised her eyebrows at her while opening her own treat, “Yeah, I heard the owners are old weirdoes from their high school.”

Yongsun only smiled, “At least they can make good treats. What did you get?”

“I got honeybees.” The blonde showed her a chocolate round bread that is dipped in honey. “And some Lime green.” Then pointed at the glass filled with green juice.

“Are you a regular here?”

“Kinda? It’s my fifth visit here.” The blonde nodded and chewed on her food, “It’s been a stressful month and I was craving for some sweet that’s how my feet lead me here.”

Yongsun nodded, she took a sip from her drink. Her eyes widened when she tasted sweet but not that sweet that it’d make her dizzy.

One sip turned into many.

The blonde across her heard the slurping noise. She smiled in amusement at Yongsun’s cute admiration for the drink. “You might drink the glass at the rate you’re going.”

Yongsun abruptly stopped her sipping and grinned sheepishly, “It’s just so sweet.”

“I know,” the blonde laughed. “This shop is quite good, actually. Do you know why?”

Yongsun only shook her head.

“They serve drinks that prevents diabetes,” the blonde shook her head, “Rumor has it that one of the owners bought quite a lot for her ill mother—who thankfully recovered—and started to offer it to her customers. She started making more when it seemed to create a good response from the public. Income and popularity wise.”

“That’s great,” Yongsun mumbled, “So this café has two owners?”

The blonde nodded, “Only one of them can only visit not most of the time since she has family business. She’s just helping her friend, they said.”

Yongsun tilted her head, “I’m not really familiar with business so,” she chuckled in embarrassment, “But I get the gist of it.”

The blonde only grinned at her, “You have quite a smile. So pretty.”

That’s a shocker. Yongsun thought, she could feel her cheeks heating up but only mumbled a: ‘thank you’ as a reply. “Oh, right. It seems like you know quite a lot about this shop?”

The blonde giggled, “My friend and I were curious so we pestered the friendly cashier when they were starting to close the café.”

“Oh,” Yongsun mumbled, caught the straw when another question popped in her mind, “Wait. Sorry, um…” the blonde gestured her to continue, “…They are quite packed most of the time, right?”

The blonde nodded, “Well when I’m coming here, I can see the café always filled with people.”

“The cashier, the one with the black hair, mentioned a second floor to me earlier. Why don’t they use it?”

“Ah, the second floor.” Yongsun smiled at the blonde’s giggle. She sound so delighted. “It’s for the little kids. They open it every morning; 10 am up to 4 pm and let in kids who wants to learn how to bake. They have a kitchen filled with safety stuffs and another area where the kids can sit down to design their cakes or something.”

“Are the owners a married couple?”

The blonde immediately shook her head. Yongsun wondered why she seemed so flustered, “No! They’re both girls.”

“Oh.” Yongsun nodded, “They must have admired children then.”

“Maybe?” The blonde shrugged, “The owner, the one who’s always here. She teaches the kids every morning and come down here to aid her workers. But they never know who she really is.”

“Not even a picture?”

“They assign that to the other one, I’ve heard.”

“Why is that?”

The blonde chuckled, “Rumor has it that the one who assists the shop is insecure.”

“Oh really now?”

The blonde only shrugged again. She turned to the watch and suddenly, a frown formed on her face. “I got to go, I have somewhere I need to be at the moment.” She looked up at Yongsun with an apologetic smile, “It is nice to talk to you,” she jumped off the stool and grabbed her purse. “See you around, Miss Kim Yongsun.” She smirked at the surprised girl.

“W-What?” Yongsun blinked. She glanced down at her coat and then slapped her forehead. Her id was clipped on the pocket.

She spent another ten minutes, eating her treat and admiring the decoration of the place. The loud chatter of every single person in the café was accompanied by sweet melodies from the speaker.

When Yongsun finally figured to call it a day, she jumped off the stool and walked to the door.

“Oh miss!” Yongsun was a few steps away from the café. She turned around to find the waiter jogging up to her.

Cute.

“Here’s the t-tea.” The cashier panted as she handed her the drink, “It’s for free. Don’t worry.”

Yongsun blinked, so that blonde wasn’t joking, huh?

The cashier straightened up and scratched the back of her neck. She continued to explain when Yongsun seemed hesitant with the drink, “O-Our café gives this drink to lessen the chance of diabetes. The owner feels bad since she offers too much sweets so…” The cashier gestured the brown cup forward, “I-It’s for your own good.”

Yongsun finally let out a smile, she held the drink and felt warm. “Thank you.” She responded sweetly.

The cashier only blinked, she bowed and ran back to the café.

Yongsun noticed the reddening ears.

The brunette sat back down on her bed, hand fumbling with her pyjama buttons while the other is holding her phone against her ear, “Yeah. Swirl and Twirl. They serve sweet treats and an old tea before you leave. The tea is for free though, surprising right?”

That’s a really caring café,” Hwasa replied from the other line, “Hm, but they’re not that popular yet?”

“Unfortunately so,” Yongsun remembered what she searched about the café a few minutes ago when she got home, “That creepy restaurant you liked beat them last year, it lessened their chance of publicity when Halloween came.”

Hwasa’s laughed only pissed Yongsun off, “Sorry if my sunbae’s restaurant decided to go ahead with my plan.

“Honestly, your creepy restaurant was great. But I like how the cute café cares for the welfare of their customers.” And not giving them heart attacks as soon as you enter the shop.

And how great is this so called Swirl and Twirl?”

“Really great,” Yongsun replied, she laid down on her bed and sighed, “Aside from the fact that they give free healthy tea. They also open the second floor to teach the kids who want to learn how to bake.”

“What did you say?

“Second floor; teaching center for kids?” Yongsun repeated.

Hwasa gasped at the other line, “Unnie, did you forget?

“What?”

Wendy! Son Seungwan!”

“What about Wendy?” Yongsun groaned when she turned to lie on her stomach.

Flashback! Nine hours ago! What happened in that Chinese restaurant?”

Yongsun was still thinking when it finally hit her, but it can’t be. “B-But…Oh come on,” Yongsun laughed, “It’s not the only café who does that. I meant the teaching center…And Wendy didn’t say that it’s located right upstairs!” She tried to believe what she just said.

Maybe, but it’s the only one around our area. You mean to say that Wendy travels just to get to her ex’s shop or something? And don’t tell me that you haven’t heard her little slip earlier about her ex being a she because I clearly heard her using a female pronoun than a man’s.”

“Possible,” Yongsun scratched her head in silent frustration, “Look the owners; they’re both girls. It’s impossible that my cousin is…” like me.

Is it bad if she’s like you?” Hwasa asked in the other line, “It isn’t, okay?”

“I know, but…” Yongsun pondered for a bit, “That’s too far-fetched.”

I thought so too when you came out to me a few years ago, yet where are we now at the moment?”

“…” Yongsun only frowned. Finding it impossible that her younger cousin is also gay.

Look unnie,” Hwasa replied when Yongsun didn’t seem to get her head together, “I love you but you should stop thinking that other people close to you cannot become gay. They know the consequences too. In this world, it’s just not you. And Seungwan’s also a grown up now. She can think for herself. Just like you.

“I know…”

“All I’m saying is, don’t get too work up on this…Maybe you’re right? Maybe that café you went in doesn’t belong to Seungwan’s ex! Yeah, let’s just think like that, okay?

“…Mm.” Honestly, Yongsun didn’t want to see her cousin so hurt so she finds it hard to wrap her mind in the idea with Wendy being gay.

Alright…You know, you should treat me there tomorrow, what about that?”

“Not a chance, you have classes tomorrow.”

And you don’t?

”Just a meeting with the other professors.”

I’m mad. I wish I’m not a student anymore!”

“Quit the whining, it won’t help you. Besides, you’re graduating in a few months.”

Oh well, then the real life starts from there, huh?

“Yeah, it does.” Yongsun’s eyes diverted to the picture frame where she’s standing in the middle of Wheein and Hwasa. She was wearing her toga while her other two friends are grinning beside her. All of them had an icing smeared on their noses.

“You can still stay here if you’re finding for a place to stay after graduation.”

Wheein and I are going to trash your home, unnie.

“At least I won’t be cleaning alone this time.” Yongsun smiled to herself, fingers grazing the picture.

Okay then, if that’s what our sun wants.” Hwasa yawned from the other line, “Gotta go, unnie. Still have to practice my voice tomorrow. Wheein’s snoring, if you can hear it, then good.” Hwasa laughed, “Goodnight, unnie.”

Yongsun chuckled, slipping in the covers with a contented smile, “Goodnight, Hwasa.”

I don't know if it's a coincidence/planned/your style of writing, but right at the moment when I was thinking about how nameless their relationship is, you wrote the part about Byul telling Yongsun about them being strangers and all.
And like a comment made, I didn't think the cashier would be Byul!
