Epilogue: The Better Days

Since That Very Day

“Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be. As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from childhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.” –  The Bhagavad Gita (2:12–13)

Jungkook POV

Saturday, February 27th 2016; 09.25 PM

‘U dont need to open it now if u r not ready.’

It was a text from Seungcheol that Jungkook got a few minutes ago after Jungkook told him that he would open the box. Seungcheol was surprisingly fast to get closer with his group of friends, especially with Jungkook, after their encounter in Daegu.

Jungkook was in his room all alone now. He, Yoongi, and Jimin had gotten back to Seoul a couple of months ago. And Jimin spent more time with Yoongi since then. Jungkook didn’t mind though. But suddenly the apartment felt more spacious without his best friend. And did the night always feel this quiet?

Jimin was worried about Jungkook so much, and he didn’t want to leave him alone at first. But Jungkook had insisted Jimin to be happy, and don’t worry too much about Jungkook, because Jungkook was happy now, he had convinced the elder.

Jungkook looked at the box on his lap. It was the box from Kim Taehyung, his soulmate whom he didn’t have a chance to meet. And now Jungkook had a box from his soul mate, and he was scared to open it.

It’s not that he didn’t know what was inside it. He knew already what those were. He just hadn’t really looked at them. And well, he hadn’t read the journal yet. Jimin said that Jungkook may open it whenever he was ready, and he wasn’t ready yet, but he was curious.

Jungkook took a deep breath and opened the wooden box slowly.

There were a photo album, a picture in frame, a bracelet, and a journal. They were placed neatly inside the box.

Jungkook took the silver bracelet and put it on his left wrist. He raised his left hand to check how beautiful the bracelet looked on his wrist. He smiled when he saw the bracelet was glowing reflecting the light in his room.

Jungkook then took the picture frame and looked at it. There was a handsome boy in the picture. It must be Kim Taehyung. Taehyung looked so happy in the picture. He was holding a cake that looked like a birthday cake. Jungkook assumed that the picture was taken in his birthday. Taehyung was indeed handsome. He had a bright boxy smile that surely would capture Jungkook’s heart. There was a mole on the tip of Taehyung’s pointed nose. It was beautiful.

Jungkook brushed the picture with his index finger slowly, then placed the picture frame on the bedside table beside him. Jungkook then took the photo album and opened it. He looked at every page slowly to make sure he didn’t miss a thing.

The photo album was quite thick and there were many pictures in it. There were pictures of Taehyung with his family, pictures of Taehyung with Yoongi and Seungcheol, pictures of Taehyung with his dog, and pictures of Taehyung alone.

Taehyung looked happy in all the pictures, and did he look handsome all the time? Because, Jesus Christ, Jungkook wouldn’t mind staring at Taehyung’s face all day and night.

It looked like Taehyung liked to dye his hair too, because in some pictures his hair was black, in other pictures it was brown, and in other pictures it was purple, and it looked like the newest one was orange.

Taehyung looked extremely good in all hair colours, especially orange, Jungkook decided. Jungkook smiled at how some pictures were blurred and Taehyung still printed them. Maybe because in those blurred pictures Taehyung looked handsome nonetheless.

Jungkook closed the photo album and placed in front of the picture frame carefully. He then took the journal from the box. The journal’s cover was black and it was made from leather. Jungkook brushed the cover slowly before he opened it.

Oh—it was not a journal. It was more like a scrapbook. A scrapbook with a hard cover. It would be durable. Long-lasting. How thoughtful.

The book was filled with other pictures of Taehyung himself, and there were also some movie tickets and concert tickets glued on some pages. He left notes for each picture to let Jungkook know what he was doing in the picture. Jungkook read all of them with smile glued on his face.

Jungkook was opening the last few pages when he saw that in fact the last pages were filled with a letter. For him.

Jungkook closed his eyes and took a deep breath, he then opened his eyes slowly and looked at the book in his hands. And then he started to read.

March 30th 2013

Hi, Soul mate~

Uhm- Hi.

Wow only by thinking about you making me smile like a crazy man, you know?

Jungkook smiled.

Well, I don’t know if Yoongi hyung would find you or not. But let’s just assume you’re reading this right now.

Yoongi hyung is a genius man though, I know he would find you.

Yes he found me. And yes I am reading this right now.

Anyway,

Ugh- I feel bad for not being able to say this myself. But I hope it’s enough.

I just want to talk to you. That’s why I write this.

I hope you want to talk to me too.

I want to. I want to so bad.

So, my dear soul mate.

How was your day? I hope it’s great.

Jungkook nodded slowly. He could feel tears filling his eyes already.

Hmm- let me introduce myself first, okay?

My name is Taehyung. Kim Taehyung.

You can call me Tae, or Taetae.

Everyone calls me by those names because it’s simpler.

Hi Taetae. I’m Jungkook, you can call me whatever you like.

The one that I assumed giving this book to you is Min Yoongi. I call him Yoongi hyung. He’s my cousin, and we’re really close. Practically I’m his brother. Do you have someone who was close to you like your very own sibling? It’s really nice to have one. Someone to mess up with, and someone to look up to.

Jimin hyung. Mine named Park Jimin. It’s nice to have him indeed.

And I spent my childhood with Yoongi hyung mostly. At least until Yoongi hyung decided to spend more of his time with his own cooler friends, and then I also had an awesome best friend whom I met in middle school. His name is Choi Seungcheol. After that, I spent more time with him. I’m still close with Yoongi hyung though. He’s my brother after all.

I spent all my life with Jimin hyung. I cannot imagine not having him around me.

Oh yea, I love foods so much! Especially beef! Ah even writing it makes my stomach grumbles.

You’re really interesting, Tae. Jungkook couldn’t help but smiled.

I love my parents, so much! I love my little brother and my little sister.

I also love my dog!! Her name is Soonshim~

Oh, and I love acting. I have been thinking that acting would be my major if I could ever enter university.

Jungkook’s heart flipped at that.

Everyone says I’m weird. I don’t know if you would also think that about me. I always wonder, but I wouldn’t know.

Yoongi hyung sometimes even joked that there was something wrong with my brain. But he cried hard when his words came out to be true, literally. There was something wrong with my brain. (I’m so sorry, Yoongi hyung.)

Brain cancer. Jungkook could feel tears starting to flow on his cheeks.

I always think about you, you have no idea of how bad I wanted to meet you. You have no idea of how happy I’m when the tattoo appeared. It was like, you have come into my life since then.

Yes, I have no idea. You’re not here to tell me that.

My love~

I’ve dreamt about you, three times. I’ve never seen you, yet I just know that it was always you. It happened since I knew I’m very very sick. I’ve never been able to see your face clearly, but I could feel you were very very sad.

Jungkook frowned.

In all the dreams, you always said something that I could barely catch the meaning behind them.

The first dream was kind of vague, yet I could remember it nonetheless. You and I met in a large field with some flowers and butterflies around us. You were sitting next to me and it felt nice. We looked at the beautiful scenery before us, and you suddenly whispered, “Do they happy? The butterflies I mean. Do those butterflies happy? Do you happy?”

I didn’t get it. But butterfly in a dream always means good thing. They said If you see several butterflies in your dream, then it symbolizes acceptance, growth, inspiration, and freedom. They also said that butterfly represents romance, long and happy romance. See? Our romance will last long and happy. So, don’t worry, OK?

Jungkook wiped his suddenly overflowing tears with the back of his right hand.

The second dream was not as vague as the first one, it was kinda creepy though. We kinda met in a middle of a quiet town. You were just standing before me and looked at me for a long while before you said to me, “Our paths wouldn’t cross here.”

Well, It’s kinda clear for me, what you meant was we wouldn’t be able to meet...

Jungkook looked up to prevent the tears from falling again before he continued.

The third dream happened not so long ago. It was in fact getting clearer. We were lying together in this hospital bed. It felt content even though I still couldn’t see your face clearly. You hugged me close and caressed my cheeks tenderly. Then you said to me, “I have loved you all my lives. So don’t worry too much about us. We would always meet again.”

And I trust you...

All the dreams were different, yet they were the same. You always looked so sad.

I don’t like to see you sad. Please don’t be sad. Smile for me, OK?

Jungkook bit his lower lip and try to manage a small smile.

Everything will be better eventually. Trust me.

I only want you to be happy. I will be happy whenever you’re happy.

So, look. I’ve dreamt many dreams beside the ones with you in it.

Like, once I dreamt of being a famous poet in some kingdom. And other night I dreamt of joining the army and joining a war. I even dreamt of being a part of famous band as a drummer! It was awesome!

In all those dreams, I had a red soulmate tattoo and I couldn’t be happier. All of them were so clear and so real, I even had a hard time to  know which one the reality was when I woke up.

Jungkook frowned again, and then glanced at his still grey tattoo.

I know that I’m so selfish for leaving this letter for you.

I’m sorry for that.

But I don’t know— I’m leaving this letter not to darken your days, it’s to lighten up your days in fact.

Well I’m still so selfish that I want you to remember me. I’m sorry for being selfish.

I remember one day Yoongi hyung said that I’m not selfish, I’m just persistent. Whatever it is, I’m sorry, OK?

It’s okay, really. I also wanna have a memory about you.

My soulmate,

I really, really hope that our paths would cross. And I still believe they will.

I promise you, we will meet. I promise you, I will hug you, and kiss you.

I promise I will hold you tight and never let you go.

Trust me, Ok?

I trust you.

But for now, I can’t. I’m sorry.

Please be happy.

Find something fun and do it.

Pursue your passion and live your life happily.

I will.

Find someone to love you, and to be loved.

I’ll see you in another life. I promise you.

I love you, my dear.

See you.

Yours sincerely,

KIM TAEHYUNG

Jungkook hugged the book on his chest tightly. He had never really thought about his soulmate this deep before, because he simply didn’t know who they was. Jungkook was sure he wanted to meet his soulmate so bad back then. But then the mark turned to grey and it was the most hurtful feeling for him physically and mentally. His grief was terrible, but life went on. And he decided that it was better for him to not to think about it too much. So, he got better.

But now he knew. He knew who his soulmate was. He’s in fact a handsome adorable wonderful boy named Kim Taehyung. Jungkook suddenly wondered what if he met the boy. He knew he would be the happiest man on earth. And Jungkook wondered how awesome the world would be with Kim Taehyung in it.

Tears still flowing on Jungkook’s cheeks and he could barely breathe now. He then lay down and curled on his bed with the book was still in his embrace. I love you too. Please keep your promise.

Jungkook didn’t know how long he had been crying but he was sure it wasn’t that long before he suddenly heard a scream.

“Oh my God!” The voice was coming from his bedroom door. “Oh my God!” The voice was getting closer and clearer now. “Oh- I’m sorry, Kookie- I’m so sorry.” Jungkook was now sure that it was Jimin’s voice.

“Hyung?” Jungkook spoke softly. He tried to look at the direction of the voice and a worried Jimin came in sight.

Jungkook didn’t really remember what had happened next, but suddenly he felt a small hand was embracing him tightly from the back. Jimin. Yea, at least he had Jimin.

“Jungkook- we’re sorry.” Another raspy voice could be heard before him. And Yoongi. He had Yoongi too now.

Yoongi was sitting on the floor in front of him. his voice sounded worried. And he was caressing Jungkook’s arm gently.

It was Saturday, and Jimin usually spent his Saturday night in Yoongi’s apartment. That was why Jungkook opened the box in the first place. So that, his hyung wouldn’t see him breaking down like this. Jungkook really really didn’t want to make them worry.

But, Jungkook felt so much warmer now, both his body and his heart. Jungkook knew that he would always have Jimin. Jungkook knew he could always count on him. Jimin was more than a best friend for him, he was a brother.

And Yoongi. Yoongi was apparently his soulmate’s closest person. And for as long as Jungkook had known Yoongi, the older was actually a nice person. He was never being a jerk even when Jungkook acted like a jerk to him back then. Jungkook was sure that he could count on Yoongi too now.

Oh- and he even had Namjoon, Seokjin, and Hoseok too. Even Seungcheol, he had Seungcheol too now. The most awesome people were surrounding him. He could live his life happily with those amazing people as his family, he just knew it. He would be okay. He would live his life happily and he would tell his soulmate all about it when he meets him someday.

“Thank you, hyung.” Jungkook sighed in relief. “I love both of you.”

“Yes, Kookie. I love you.” Jimin chuckled and tightened his embrace.

“I love you too, brat.” Yoongi smiled.

Jungkook felt warm.

Don’t worry, Tae. I will be happy. So long and good night.

Jungkook POV

August 13th 2091; 11.11 AM

Jungkook looked around from the place he was standing. He could barely remember anything happened the night before. And the sun was shining too bright so suddenly. Oh yea, he still got a hangover (from drinking too much soda for heaven’s sake!) after his friends challenged him in some ridiculous drink game last night.

Well, actually they were not Jungkook’s friends. Jungkook had no friend, and he liked it that way. And thank God he wouldn’t need to meet those so-called-friends ever again after this. You know, entering different schools and all.

He looked at his surrounding and everyone was in the same uniform as him. The same shirt, the same jacket, the same trousers and skirt for the girls. It was not a good thing to come to school in that state, especially because it was the first day of school, the first day of him entering his high shool life. Yet he was not in a good mood to make new friends or to be there in general. So, that’s not a problem.

Jungkook was a very smart person, that’s why he managed to enter that prestigious high school, absolutely not because of his parents’ wealth like the common belief. Jungkook was actually a kind-hearted person. He just didn’t like to get close to anybody. Since experiences clearly told him that everyone only wanted to get close to him for his parents’ wealth.

Jungkook was indeed too late for his first day because he could see that the school had been dismissed. It’s the first day after all, the 11.00 AM dismissal for the day. “Oh .” Jungkook really hoped he wouldn’t get a problem by that. He could almost hear his mother’s nagging in his mind.

Jungkook felt his wrist was itched. He folded his sleeve; August 13th 2091. He then tried hard to remember what the date was today.

“.” He widened his eyes when he realized it was the day.

No.

Way.

Jungkook wanted to throw up because he wasn’t ready. Hell. He would never be ready for this thing. Jungkook was scared when he thought that it meant his soul mate could be one of the students around him.

.

Jungkook walked through all people in the school yard. He processed himself to get the hell out of that place. Well, not really out, because he was now entering the school building instead.

Jungkook didn’t dare to look up. He walked along the quiet corridor and sometimes glanced at the people he passed.

Jungkook was not really put his attention to the place he was walking when he suddenly bumped into someone. And the said someone fell on his bottom. Right. Of course he would bump into someone. How else the way he would meet his soul mate anyway?

The two were locking eyes now, but Jungkook didn’t feel his left wrist burning as everyone said it would. So this cute student was not his soul mate, it seemed. But  Jungkook did feel warm when he saw the boy’s brown eyes and he felt that he knew this boy from somewhere.

The boy was small and his hair was jet black. He looked somehow soft and warm. His eyes were dark-brown.

Jungkook was sure that he never met him before, yet something in the back of his head told him that he had missed the boy so much.

The boy looked at Jungkook and frowned.

Jungkook couldn’t help but glanced at the boy’s left wrist. He wasn’t wearing his jacket, only his white uniform shirt. And Jungkook could see a glimpse of the boy’s tattoo under his long sleeve, and it was blue. So, he surely wasn’t his soulmate.

“Jiminnie? What are you doing?” A bored-looking boy came into a view and help the Jiminnie boy to stand. The boy didn’t wear a jacket uniform either, and his sleeves were folded. And Jungkook could see the blue tattoo on his left wrist.

Without even looking at the exact date of the two boys’ tattoos, Jungkook could easily see that they were lovers, or even soulmates.

“Sorry, he was too clumsy for his own good.” The bored-looking boy said while brushing some dust from the black head’s uniform gently. Their simple interaction caught Jungkook off guard. It looked so natural and sincere. Jungkook had almost believed that no more sincerity existed.

The black head nodded to Jungkook and smiled sheepishly. “Sorry.” He muttered.

Jungkook nodded to the boy. He then saw the boy interlocked his arm with the bored-looking boy, and they walked slowly passing Jungkook.

Jungkook turned and saw their backs which were getting further. He heard they were talking from afar.

“What the hell, hyung.”

“Watch your words, Jiminnie. Cursing doesn’t suit you.”

“Have I told you that I hate you so much?”

“All the time, baby.”

“Yoongi hyunggg... Don’t call me that. You know I’m weak.”

Jungkook was still looking at the two, amused. Yet they looked so happy, and content. God. He wished he had that kind of relationship. With his soulmate is better. If before he wasn’t sure that meeting his soulmate could do any better for his life, now he was more than sure that he wanted to meet his soulmate so badly.

Jungkook had never had any best friend, yet he could try now, right? His parents always convinced him that there were still sincere people out there, and Jungkook hadn’t trusted them until now.

Jungkook smiled. Maybe his high school life wouldn’t be so bad.

“Uhm- excuse me. Did you see a short bright looking boy with another short bored looking one?”

Jungkook heard a deep voice talking from behind him. He then turned to face the person behind him.

“Because they’re my best friend and my cousin, and they freaking ditched me!”

Jungkook looked at the boy before him. The boy was breathtakingly handsome Jungkook must said. His dark eyes, his pointed nose, and his pink lips were perfect on him.

The boy were still talking while Jungkook only looking at the endearing boy longingly.

“Dammit! I only went to the restroom for several minutes for dragon’s sake!”

The boy stopped talking and he finally locked his eyes with Jungkook’s.  And suddenly Jungkook felt his wrist was burning. The boy before him gasped and folded his sleeve a little bit and the colour of the tattoo was changing slowly.

“Oh.” The boy looked a little bit surprise.

Jungkook’s heart skipped two beats. His soul mate was the most handsome person that he had ever laid his eyes on.

“Hi.” His soulmate smiled handsomely at him.

Jungkook smiled back, because it was hard not to. “Hi.”

“I’m- Uhm- I’m Kim Taehyung.” His soulmate, Taehyung, looked at him expectantly and damn, he looked adorable.

“Jungkook- uhm- Jeon Jungkook.” Jungkook was still looking at Taehyung’s almond eyes because they were so so beautiful.

Taehyung looked hesitant before he suddenly, and unexpectedly, crushed Jungkook with a tight hug. Taehyung closed his eyes to treasure the embrace. There were tears flowing on his cheeks. He hugged Jungkook just like he had waited him since forever. And maybe he did.

Jungkook hugged him back just as tight because he could now, and because Taehyung was comfortable, and really really warm.

Jungkook closed his eyes and sighed in relief. He Taehyung’s soft hair gently and whispered, “It took so long, hm?”

“It did.” Taehyung answered softly.

It was surprisingly easy for them to fall in each other’s arms. It felt like they had loved each other all their lives. Maybe it’s true, maybe they were made for each other since the very beginning. Maybe they just needed to be patient and wait for the right incarnation to be together.

Jungkook kissed the top of Taehyung’s locks longingly. It smelled nice and somehow familiar. “Hey, I have many things to tell you.” he said.

“Don’t worry.” Taehyung smiled on his neck. “We have all the time in the world now.”

And now they’re here. They’re meeting each other, just like how they were supposed to be. Now everything was coming back to the right slot, and they could be together. Now, everything would be okay. They would be okay. Because they had each other, and they always had each other since the very beginning.

Finally.

Thanks for keeping your promise.

I love you.
