Twelve Noon

Sideways Glance

You sat on the couch frozen unsure of what to do. In your mind you silently weighed your options. Bobby was sleeping over again. That didn't really mean anything. He had before. You had survived. Why would this time be any different? You counted down the seconds as he was changing and eventually your gasped for breath. Unconsciously you had been holding your breath and you panted from lack of oxygen. You took a deep breath and let it out slowly. It would be fine. It would be fine. You chanted in your head over and over until you finally started to believe yourself. But suddenly you heard your bathroom door open and your heart caught and began to hammer in your chest and all your calming exercises were wasted. You quickly let out your breath as you heard footsteps approaching. You glanced up as Bobby came into view from the hallway and he smiled at you as he folded his clothes and set them next to his backpack. He jumped onto the couch next to you and smiled.

"So much better," he sighed.

You glanced down his body at his new comfy clothes. He was in a pair of baggy sweats with elastic in the ankles and a tank top...one of those big ones that looks like it was a t-shirt that had is sleeve cut off. The holes for his arms were large and went all the way down to the middle of his rib cage... therefore exposiing his sides. You swallowed hard and turned away before your glance turned into a stare. "I'm tired," you murmured as you stretched and tried to distract yourself from the new skin Bobby was showing off.

"Let's go to bed," Bobby encouraged. He grabbed the remote and flipped off the TV before grabbing you by the wrists and dragging you off the couch. You flopped back against his pull in mock fatigue. Bobby groaned as he pulled and pulled at you until you slowly slid off the couch.... onto the floor.

You laughed as your hit the floor and Bobby flopped down next to you.

"Are we just sleeping here then?" he asked as his leg grazed yours.

You lauged again and shook your head. "I have to brush my teeth," you muttered as you heaved yourself off the floor. Bobby held up his hands in a silent request for you to help him up. You took his hands in yours and ignored the electricity that shook your body. You were getting good at that. You used your weight to heave him to his feet and the two of you started towards the bathroom. Bobby slung his arm naturally over your shoulder and chuckled to himself. You couldn't help but giggle with him.

Once you got to the bathroom, you expected Bobby to wait for you in your room, but to your surprise Bobby followed you into the bathroom and reached for his toothbrush. He met your slighly shocked gaze and looked back like it was the most ordinary thing. "What?" he asked. "I have to brush my teeth too."

You shook your head in response and plucked your toothbrush from the cup on the counter. You continued to squeeze toothpaste onto your toothbrush. Again to your surprise, Bobby held up his toothbrush close to yours in a silent request for toothpaste. You laughed as you squeezed some onto his toothbrush too. "Are you just not going to talk anymore?" you asked jokingly. "You're just going to talk to me with your body?"

Bobby laughed. "JJan!!" he said tapping the neck of his toothbrush to yours before sticking it in his mouth. The two of you brushed your teeth side by side. You looked at the two of you in the mirror and you couldn't help but revel in the fact that you were brushing your teeth with this person. The two of you couldn't have looked more different. You; a young, average girl, with an average internship, an average apartment, a normal routine, and a simple life, and Bobby; a fire storm of a boy, with the most public and eye-catching job, an apartment full of fame and popularity, a whirlwind schedule, and a drea, brushing your teeth together like it happened everyday. You smiled to yourself and cherished that small normal moment. With Bobby normal moments like brushing your teeth seemed exciting and new.

The two of you spit and rinsed your mouths one after another and then almost without missing a beat, the two of you smiled into the mirror at the exact same time. You knew you were checking your teeth but you couldln't help but burst out laughing when you and Bobby did the exact same action  at the exact same time. Bobby looked down at you and joined in on your laughter. "You do that too?" he asked incredulously. "All my members think I'm weird for doing that. We're perfect for each other," he laughed.

Again, you ignored the small hiccup in your heart beat at his words. You brushed past him into the bedroom and realized you hadn't gotten his futon out. "Oh," you murmured. "I'll go get your futon," you said. As your turned around you bumped straight into Bobby's chest. He placed his hands on your shoulders to steady you as you backed up in surprise. You looked up in him in surprise.

He looked down at you with a serious look on his face and you swallowed in nervousness. The two of you were so close, closer than you had ever been before. "Jee," Bobby said seriously, "can't I just sleep with you?"

Your heart beat spiked and this time you couldn't ignore it. It pounded in your chest and in your ears. Your mind raced at a million miles a minute and you could feel your palms get clammy and your face burn in a blush.

"I mean we've already slept in the same bed together last time," Bobby continued oblivious to the storm raging inside of you. "Plus you bed is more comfortable than the futon. Not that I don't like the futon but your bed is definitely preferrable." He looked down at you and suddenly his puppy dog eyes were out. It wasn't fair, you thought to yourself. There was no winning against that look.

"Um..." you stuttered. "I guess?" you said much more nervously than you had intended.

Bobby clenched a fist in victory before quickly switching off the lights and bounding over to your bed. He settled in under the covers and slid to one side to make room for you. You slid into bed next to him and tried to control your heart. It was definitely not ready for this much emotional onslaught. Bobby turned to face you and smiled as he pulled the covers closer to his face. You smiled back shyly and laid facing him. "Wanna play a game?" he asked quietly.

You slowly nodded. "What game?" you asked.

"How about 'Would you Rather'?" he murmured.

"Okay," you replied dubiously. "You go first."

"Would you rather find true love or have an unlimited amout of money?" Bobby asked.

"Love," you stated without even thinking about it.

Bobby nodded. "Your turn," he prompted.

"Hm... Would you rather be able to fly or read minds?" you asked after some thought.

"Fly," Bobby replied.

It went on like that for what seemed like hours until both of you were out of questions. Suddenly both of you yawned and mutually decided it was time to actually sleep. "Okay last one," Bobby conceded. "Would you rather keep being my friend even though it means you'll probably be disappointed and hurt a lot of the time or would you rather I walk out of your life tomorrow and never contact you again?" It was silent for a moment as you processed his words. "Give me an honest answer, Jee, please." His eyes seemed to plead with you sending you silent pleas for you to riid him of his inner struggle about his friendship.

You reached out slowly under the covers searching. Finally you found his hand and your clasped it in yours tightly. "What would you rather Bobby? Would you rather stay my friend and deal with the feelings that will come with it like guilt and loneliness or would you rather I just disappear?"

He sighed and his breath caressed your face lightly. You could tell he was really torn and it made your heart squeeze painfully as you watched him struggle with his feelins and his morals of what was right. He was trying to separate his head and his heart but it wasn't that simple, you could tell. Time moved slowly  as you waited for his answer. After what felt like an eternity he answered.

"I want you close," he whispered.

Your eyes flew open and you were surprised to see bright afternoon light flooding into your room. Your mind told you it was Monday. You were supposed to be at work. You hurriedly checked your phone. It was almost twelve noon. You went to sit up but a weight kept you anchored to the bed. You looked down and there was an arm wrapped securely around your waist. It was coming from behind you and you slowly turned around to look at its owner. Bobby slept soundly behind you  and as you turned to face him he only used his arm to pull you closer to his chest. Oh. That's right. It was Monday but you had the day off and Bobby had slept over last night. Again.
