Surprises

Overcoming Everything

Hyukjae was walking to school like usual, listening to his music on his old, worn out mp3 player. As he reached the school he saw Ryeowook, who waved at him when he saw him. He waved back and Ryeowook walked over. "Zaoshang hao Hyukjae-ge." Hyukjae bowed to him. "Zaoshang hao Ryeowook-ge." Ryeowook smiled. "Please don't bow to me Hyukjae-ge." Hyukjae just looked at him. "You just spoke to me in Korean." Ryeowook giggled. "Yes, I am Korean, it's just that I usally speak Chinese because of the Chinese members in the group who don't understand Korean very well." Hyukjae nodded. "I understand." Ryeowook smiled. "You should come and hang out with us sometime." Hyukjae was just about to reply when the bell went. Ryeowook smiled at him before turning round to walk to his class. "Huitou jian Hyukjae-ge." Hyukjae ran to his class so he wasn't late.

"Good morning Hyukjae-ssi." Hyukjae turned to see Sungmin smiling at him. "Oh good morning Sungmin-hyung." Hyukjae smiled back and they sat talking to each other until the teacher came in and started the lesson. They both turned to each other and smiled when the teacher announced they were to do a project in pairs.

They sat and discussed their project at luch, they had to do a presentation on a topic they found interesting. Sungmin looked at Hyukjae. "Hyukjae-ssi, we could do our presentation on poverty, and explain that it doesn't mean someone who is poor can't have a good education like rich people." Hyukjae looked at Sungmin and whispered quietly. "Okay" Sungmin hugged Hyukjae. "You are so cute Hyukjae-ssi. It'll be fine, I promise." Hyukjae smiled and nodded. "Sungmin-hyung, is it okay if we do the project at your house? I don't have a computer." He looked down, feeling embarrassed." Sungmin smiled. "Yeah, we can do it at my house. Please don't be embarrassed Hyukjae-ssi." Hyukjae smiled. "We can start tomorrow, I have to let my umma know that I'll be going to yours after school." Sungmin nodded. "That's fine, oooh Hyukjae-ssi we can have a sleepover." Hyukjae could only nod when he saw the big smile on Sungmin's face.

When they went back to class after lunch they had a surprise lesson. There was a young woman standing at the front of the class. "Hello everyone, I'm Miss Lau and I'm here this afternoon to give you a quick lesson in Chinese. Now before we start, does anyone here already know any Chinese?" Hyukjae looked around, no-one was putting their hands up so he decided not to put his up. Unfortunately Sungmin had other plans when he seen Hyukjae wasn't putting his hand up. He stood up and pointed to Hyukjae. "Miss Lau, Hyukjae-ssi knows Chinese." He sat back down again as Miss Lau walked over to Hyukjae. "Ni shuohua zhongwen?" Hyukjae nodded. "Shi." Miss Lau walked back to the front of the class. "Hyukjae-ssi would you come up here please, you can assiste me." Hyukjae slowly stood up and walked to the front of the class. He didn't want to do it but he had no choice since he couldn't disobey a teacher.

Hyukjae spent the lesson writing Chinese letters on the board and answering questions in Chinese that Miss Lau asked him. By the end of the lesson Hyukjae was feeling tired and was happy to be able to sit back down. Miss Lau gave everyone information on where they could take Chinese classes before she left. Sungmin watched Hyukjae. "Hyukjae-ssi, mianhae. Do you hate me?" Hyukjae looked at Sungmin and gently shook his head. "I don't hate you Sungmin-hyung. I should have put my hand up." When they were standing up to leave, Sungmin hugged Hyukjae, who shyly hugged back. Sungmin giggled. "Why so shy Hyukjae-ssi?" Hyukjae blushed. "It's the first time that anyone's hugged me that isn't my parents." Sungmin smiled and lead him out the classroom.

Sungmin started walking Hyukjae to the music room for after school activities. While they were walking they met Ryeowook, who was also walking to the music room. Ryeowook smiled when he saw them. "Hyukjae-ge. Ni zai ganma?" Hyukjae smiled back. "Ryeowook-ge. I'm walking to class." He replied in Korean. Ryeowook smiled and took Hyukjae's hand. "I'll take you." Sungmin giggled. "Well I think I'll head to my class then, see you tomorrow Hyukjae-ssi." Sungmin turned around and walked to his class while Ryeowook happily skipped to the music room with Hyukjae. When the reached the room Ryeowook pulled Hyukjae over to the others in the Chinese group. The others smiled at him. They all sat on the floor and started talking about songs. Hyukjae was sitting next to a small cute looking boy who smiled at him with a tiny blush on his face. "Wo jiao Henry." He introduced himself. Hyukjae smiled. "Wo jiao Hyukjae." Henry smiled.

They sat talking for a while, not noticing Youngwoon watching them from across the room. Henry tugged on Hyukjae's arm and when Hyukjae looked at him he asked in cute broken Korean. "You sing?" Hyukjae smiled at him and shook his head before explaining to him in Chinese that he wrote music and sometimes danced. Henry smiled again, while Hangeng shook his head watching Henry, knowing his adorable little brother was having a little crush on Hyukjae. Another member of the Chinese group smiled and asked of he could see some music that Hyukjae wrote. Hyukjae blushed a little and pulled his folder out his bag. He looked through his folder and picked out one of the pieces he'd finished. He shyly handed it to the boy who asked. The boy smiled and introduced himself as Kyuhyun. He then sat and looked at the composition in his hands. Hyukjae pulled out his old mp3 player and searched for a song on it before handing it to Kyuhyun. He blushed whe Kyuhyun took it. "Thats the music from the composition." He said quietly. Kyuhyun put the earphones in and was lost to the world for a few minutes. When the song had finished he took the earphones out and smiled. Hyukjae looked at him. "Ni juede zenme yang?" Kyuhyun smiled again. "Wo juede haomei." Hyukjae blushed again.

The other members sat and listened to the song and read the composition. They all complemented Hyukjae. Youngwoon came over and asked if he could listen to it and after he heard it he smiled. "Hyukjae-ssi, this is amazing, if it's okay with you I would like to use this in the school concert which is coming up soon." Hyukjae smiled and nodded. Youngwoon looked to Kyuhyun. "Kyuhyun-ssi, I would like you to learn the lyrics so you can perform it at the concert," He turned back to Hyukjae, "Would you help him Hyukjae-ssi?" Hyukjae nodded. "Yes Youngwoon-hyung." After Youngwoon had spoke to them, Kyuhyun spoke to Hyukjae again, in Korean. "Hyukjae-ssi, if it's okay with you, we can practice during this class tomorrow." Hyukjae smiled. "That's fine with me Kyuhyun-ssi."

The bell rang and they all stood up. Hyukjae looked out the window and sighed a little when he saw that it was raining quite heavily. Hangeng noticed and put his hand on Hyukjae's shoulder. "Hyukjae-ge?" Hyukjae looked at him. "Duibuqi Hangeng-ge." Hangeng asked him what was wrong and Hyukjae eventually told him, he had to walk home in the rain and was going to get soaked. Hangeng smiled and told him he would drive him home. Henry overhead and got excited. They walked out to the school carpark and Hangeng unlocked his car. Hyukjae stood and stared at it before Henry pulled him towards it and into the back seat. Hangeng checked their seatbelts before getting in the front, putting his on and driving out the school. Hyukjae gave Hangeng directions to his house and while Hangeng was driving them there Henry was happily chatting to Hyukjae in the back.

Henry pouted when they arrived at Hyukjae's house. Hyukjae noticed and gave a small giggle before telling Henry he would see him tomorrow. Henry hugged him before he got out the car. Hyukjae bowed at Hangeng who waved back with Henry before driving off. Hyukjae smiled and walked to his house. He opened the door. "Umma." He called out, but frowned when he got no answer. He looked around the house until he found a note on the fridge, he went to turn the kitchen light on to read it but the light didn't turn on. He walked to another room and tried the light there but still got nothing. We must have run out of power again. He walked over to the nearest window and held the note up to read it. Hyukkie I've had to go to my parents to get money for electricity as it had run out again. I shouldn't be long. Love umma x. Hyukjae sighed a little and decided to go upstairs. He sat and thought about everything that happened that day, well he couldn't do his homework in the dark. He couldn't believe that Youngwoon wanted Kyuhyun to sing his song at the school concert.

His mother came in an hour later and after putting in the electricity went to find Hyukjae. She knocked his on his door and quietly went in. She smiled when she saw Hyukjae asleep at his small desk. He gently woke him up and while he took a shower, she made some dinner for the both of them. After eating dinner and washing the dishes Hyukjae went back to his room to do his homework. His mother came up later and sat on his bed. Hyukjae smiled and sat next to her. "Umma, Youngwoon-hyung wants to use one of my compositions in the school concert. I've to teach Kyuhyun-ssi the lyrics to it." Hyukjae's mother hugged him. "Oh Hyukkie that's wonderful, I'm so proud of you." Hyukjae hugged her back. "Umma, is it okay if I go to Sungmin-hyung's house tomorrow after school? We have to do a project and he wants me to sleep over." His mother smiled. "Of course it's alright Hyukkie, I'm so glad your making friends." His mother stood up, kissed his forehead and wished him a good night. Hyukjae wished her the same before going to bed, dreaming of the Chinese group and staying at Sungmin's house.
