Growing up was tough.
But we had each other.
Byunghun grew up wonderfully, he had naturally pouty pink lips, sharp nose and that most beautiful pair of eyes that look like two glass beads, clear as sky. The pair of eyes that I fell in love with so deeply at first sight.
When Byunghun was five, he was often bullied by our neighbors when umma sent him out to run various errands for her. They called him mean names and pushed him to the ground on several occasions.
But I could only helplessly watch on from the huge glass window of my room, that was right in front of where my baby blue plastic study table was placed.
She would never allow me near my little brother since he was born. She explained sternly that we were different.
Why were we different?
He's my younger brother.
We share the same blood.
I could never understand umma's intentions. Byunghun was a mere child but she's always sending him out on errands alone and turning a blind eye to his bruises left by the bullies whenever he gets home.
The very first time I protected Byunghun, it was raining heavily outside. As usual, I watched on from my room's window as Byunghun opened his red umbrella after stepping out of the house. He slowly made his way down the steps of our porch and made a left turn onto the pathway.
He barely moved forward when a big burly boy around my age tripped him and he landed pitifully at the boy's feet.
